Projections And Perceptions-Editoral Comments. The Changing Human Impact, Andrew Goudie
The Geographical Bulletin
In recent decades the power of humans to modify the landscape has been transformed by the achievements of humans in increasing their numbers, the increase in individual affluence and consumption in western societies, and the application of new technologies. During the twentieth century the human population of the planet has exploded. It was not until the time of George Perkins Marsh, author of that great landmark work on conservation Man and Nature (1864), that the world's population reached 1000 million-a process that had taken about 3 million years. However, by 1930 it had doubled yet again to 2000 million, by …

Deformation Characteristics And Influential Factors Of The Surface Uplift Of Closed Mines, Luo Jin, Li Yingming, Guo Qingbiao, Zhao Guangming
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective The residual surface deformations of closed mines exhibit prolonged duration and complex evolutionary processes, potentially leading to unconventional phenomena like surface uplift, which affects the re-exploitation and reutilization of closed mines. Methods This investigated a mining area in Huainan, Anhui Province as an example to explore the deformation mechanisms, characteristics, and influential factors of the surface uplift of closed mines. Through numerical simulations, this study analyzed the propagation process of surface uplift with an increase in the groundwater level. Accordingly, this study investigated the quantitative impacts of the mining height, groundwater level, and rock strength of the caving zone …

Monitoring And Modeling Legacy Tree Response To Restoration Treatments In The Klamath Mountains, Oregon, Usa, Isaac Joseph Ball
Monitoring And Modeling Legacy Tree Response To Restoration Treatments In The Klamath Mountains, Oregon, Usa, Isaac Joseph Ball
Dissertations and Theses
Climate change and its disruption of historical drought and wildfire patterns pose a substantial threat to forest health in the western United States. This threat is compounded by past management practices like fire suppression. The largest, oldest, and most ecologically valuable trees are particularly vulnerable, making their conservation a key objective of climate-adaptive forest management. Restoration treatments such as mechanical thinning have been shown to enhance tree growth and drought resilience in dry conifer forests, but long-term monitoring is necessary to understand their sustained effects. This study used dendroecological tree-ring analysis to investigate the effects of thinning on the growth, …

Geographic Information Systems Data Projects
Maine experienced its highest water level ever recorded on January 13, 2024, just two days after another winter storm with an even higher storm surge on a smaller tide. In this study, we aimed to quantify the impact of these storms along five shorelines in York County, Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport, Fortunes Rocks, Middle, Biddeford Pool, and Hills, in Biddeford, and Camp Ellis, Ferry, and Bayview beaches in Saco. We used aerial and unoccupied aerial vehicle (UAV/drone) imagery to analyze the changes in area and volume of dunes and sand along the beaches before, after, and during recovery due …

Platform work has gained significant recognition due to the rapid growth of the digital economy, which offers new opportunities for workers. However, inadequate regulatory frameworks in Malaysia have led to various human rights concerns, particularly regarding the protection of workers' rights, such as social security, fair remuneration and safe working conditions. Furthermore, the challenge of providing worker protections must be balanced with the flexible nature of the gig economy. Thus, this study explored the evolving legal landscape surrounding the protection of platform workers’ rights in Malaysia from both legal and human rights perspectives. It examines the role of business and …

Public participation is a crucial aspect of spatial planning, serving to achieve sustainable development objectives. The Indonesian government has recognized this fact andincorporated public participation in its spatial planning lawsand regulations. However, procedures for involving the public have been criticized for lacking genuine participation, highlighting opportunities for public input only being offeredformally. Meanwhile, public participation is considered a significant component of spatial planning regulation in Australia, particularly in Victoria. The government has involved the public in various stages of the planning process, including creating a planning scheme, issuing planning permits, and completing planning agreements. Based on the established procedures under …

Padjadjaran Jurnal Ilmu Hukum (Journal of Law)

Proper Conceptualization Of Naval Operational Doctrine—A Case Study Of The Israeli Navy, Shaul Chorev
Proper Conceptualization Of Naval Operational Doctrine—A Case Study Of The Israeli Navy, Shaul Chorev
Naval War College Review
The character of naval warfare is changing profoundly, and traditional conceptions of victory may no longer apply. Naval warfare requires systematic reconceptualization to ensure that operational doctrine is applicable to the future environment and that navies are tasked with, train to, and are structured for missions they actually are able to accomplish. The Israeli navy’s early successes, more-recent challenges, and current contribution to the ongoing response to the 7 October Hamas attacks are illustrative.

A Disparities Analysis Of Cancer Patients’ Access To Depression Treatment By Health Insurance Status And Type, Stephanie Minbiole-Snider
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research has demonstrated that comorbid conditions like depression in cancer patients reduce quality of life, prolong recovery, and reduce survival time of the cancer patient. Although other studies have investigated the issue of depression among cancer patients, there is a dearth of studies looking at differences in taking depression medication with health insurance as a source of disparity. Using survey data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), and the health belief model as the theoretical framework, this study had two purposes. The first was to determine if there were differences in the likelihood of taking medication for depression based …

Political Economy Of Takeover Regulation In India: How Good Is India’S Mandatory Bid Rule?, Nemika Jha Prof. Dr.
National Law School Business Law Review
The political economy/interest group theory has emerged as a powerful framework for understanding the differences between takeover regulation in advanced economies like the United States (U.S.) and United Kingdom (U.K.). However, what is largely missing is whether the theory can be extended outside of the U.S. and the U.K., particularly to explain the motivations behind (and the impact of) transplanting takeover law principles from the U.S. and/or the U.K. to other jurisdictions. This article contributes to the ongoing discourse by testing the applicability of the interest group theory offered by Armour and Skeel to explain India’s transplant of U.K.’s mandatory …
