Effectiveness Of A Southern California School District’S Wellness Center Evidenced-Based Practices On Push Factors In Latinx Students, Leslie Abarea, Yeraldin Ismerio
Effectiveness Of A Southern California School District’S Wellness Center Evidenced-Based Practices On Push Factors In Latinx Students, Leslie Abarea, Yeraldin Ismerio
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This scoping literature review proposal explores the effectiveness of a Southern California School District’s wellness center evidenced-based practices on push factors that impact Latinx students. Push factors such as low grades, low test scores, poor behavior, absenteeism, and suspensions/expulsions expose Latinx youth to mental health issues that influence academic success. By analyzing existing research on wellness center approaches, evidenced-based practices, culturally responsive practices, and academic support, this scoping literature review proposal would aim to assess the impact these practices have on student academic success. This proposed study would have the intent of assisting this school district to create an evaluation …

The Role Of Medical-Legal Partnerships On Social Determinants Of Health For Vulnerable Populations In The Inland Empire, Sabrina C. Kinnally
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
San Bernardino and Riverside counties face significant challenges in addressing the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) for vulnerable populations, including housing instability, healthcare access, and food insecurity. This project examined the role of Medical-Legal Partnerships (MLPs) in providing services to vulnerable populations. Through a systematic review, the study explored the current state of MLPs and their effectiveness in addressing SDOH to reduce health disparities. The other purpose is to assist Agape Legal Service, Inc. (AGAPE), a non-profit organization, in completing their strategic plan, which aims to address the legal needs of vulnerable populations within the Inland Empire. The systematic review …

Exploring The Factors That Influence Telehealth Usage Among Immigrants In The United States: A Mixed Methods Study, Jose M. Garcia-Castañeda
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Background: Immigrants in the United States continue to face barriers in accessing healthcare services which are rooted in systemic inequities, cultural disconnects, and language-related challenges. The growing presence of telehealth services has offered new opportunities to expand access, but it has also highlighted new barriers which are language proficiency and digital literacy which could increase the gap in services for already marginalized populations. These barriers are factors that influence outcomes such as delayed care, reduced preventative care, and overall poorer health outcomes. The Andersen Behavioral Model of Health Service Use (Andersen, 1995) provides a useful framework in understanding how predisposing, …

Trade, Commerce, Ceremony In Association With The Kizh Village Of Lukuupagna Ca-Ora-162, Aurelia R. Torres Ms.
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
The Kizh of Southern California were an influential part of the trade, commerce, and ceremonial networks in the region before the invasion of the Spanish colonists into their ancestral territory. Their ancestral territory consisted of what is today known as Santa Catalina, Santa Nicholas, Santa Clemente, Santa Barbara Island, Los Angeles County, northern Orange County, western San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. At time of Spanish contact, the Kizh people identified themselves as “Kizh”, the people of the willow houses”. After the Kizh were forced into the Spanish mission system, the Spanish renamed them the “Gabrieleño” connecting them to the …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Aim: The role of ecological specialisation in shaping biogeographic and evolutionary patterns remains unresolved. To date, few studies have quantitatively examined consumer niche breadth at a global scale. We describe global biogeographic and diversification patterns of specialisation, measured using trophic and thermal niches, for a highly diverse assemblage of consumers: reef fishes. First, we investigated the confluence of specialisation with global biogeographic patterns in species richness and reef area. Then, we tested whether these patterns could be explained by differences in diversification rates and geographic ranges. Location: Tropical reefs across the globe. Time Period: Present. Major Taxa Studied: Reef fishes. …
Learning In Crisis: Analyzing Covid-19’S Effect On Nyc Public High Schools Through Open Access Data, Audrey Leung
Learning In Crisis: Analyzing Covid-19’S Effect On Nyc Public High Schools Through Open Access Data, Audrey Leung
FCRH Honors Program Theses
The COVID-19 pandemic triggered widespread disruptions to student learning across the United States, intensifying many pre-existing educational inequalities. This study investigates how public health conditions, environmental factors, and federal stimulus funding shaped pandemic high school outcomes in New York City, one of the nation’s largest and most diverse school districts. Using open-access datasets from city agencies, this analysis examines the relationships between local COVID-19 severity, air pollution exposure, budget allocations, and student success, as measured by attendance and graduation rates. Findings reveal that while local COVID-19 rates and air quality conditions varied across boroughs, they did not consistently predict educational …
Dumy And The Nation: How Folklore And Folk Songs Help Compose A Distinct Ukrainian Narrative, Amy Herd
Dumy And The Nation: How Folklore And Folk Songs Help Compose A Distinct Ukrainian Narrative, Amy Herd
FCRH Honors Program Theses
Historiography and ethnography have played a critical role in the development of modern Slavic nationalisms, particularly in Ukraine. As these studies became increasingly popular in the nineteenth century, scholars and members of the bourgeoisie identified folk culture as the key component for the making of the modern nation. Viewed as an authentic window into national history and tradition due to their limited interaction with the modernizing world, rural folk offered the perfect opportunity to illustrate how Ukraine had always been distinct from Russia and its other historical oppressors. As folk culture fervor gripped the intellectual elite of Eastern Europe, however, …
Blackness Under The Big Top: Racism And The Circus Of The Late Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Centuries, Christian Joseph
Blackness Under The Big Top: Racism And The Circus Of The Late Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Centuries, Christian Joseph
FCRH Honors Program Theses
Rattling through American towns large and small during its heyday, the archetypal, three-ring railroad circus was a novel attraction of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. During Reconstruction, the Gilded Age, and the Progressive Era, the circus was the dominant entertainment industry in the United States. Using both archival and historical research methods, my project offers an anatomy of the circus industry in America, both tracing its development and exploring its centrality to American culture and iconography. As a distinctly American institution, the growth of the industry was expressly linked to the physical expansion of the nation, which was …
Disparities In Guideline-Directed Medical Therapies In Rural And Underserved Heart Failure Patients, Shawn Mcclaughry
Disparities In Guideline-Directed Medical Therapies In Rural And Underserved Heart Failure Patients, Shawn Mcclaughry
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) continues to be a substantial public health challenge, thus optimal management through guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) continues to be vital. Evolving GDMT has established four pillars of first-line optimal treatment with expeditious and maximized titration of established target dosing of pillar medications. GDMT has been shown to decrease mortality among HF patients. Although continuing advancements in treatment efficacy prevail, studies demonstrate that vulnerable populations, particularly rural, Black and Hispanic individuals, exhibit significantly lower rates of GDMT optimization, leading to increased hospitalization and mortality. This literature review evaluates disparities in GDMT implementation among urban, …

Despair Against Boredom: Hyperstitional Narrativization In The International Relations Of Populist States, Rayna Summerfield
Despair Against Boredom: Hyperstitional Narrativization In The International Relations Of Populist States, Rayna Summerfield
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Academic scholarship on populism in the digital age, thus far, has focused heavily on radicalization, social reorganization, and other ways the internet and social media facilitate the rise of populist movements, rather than the impacts of the internet on the actual desires of the citizenry. In this theoretical piece, I argue that modern populists engage in a contract with their supporters to create an “entertaining” political environment closely mimicking online dynamics. Next, I use the lens of hyperstition, a concept devised by the Cybernetic Culture Research Unit, to explain the means by which the patterns of human interaction found more …
Equity In Healthcare Service Access, Anvesh Ravipati
Equity In Healthcare Service Access, Anvesh Ravipati
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
Disparities in healthcare access between rural and urban populations remain a persistent and pressing challenge in the United States, particularly among vulnerable groups such as individuals with disabilities, racial minorities, and low-income communities. These disparities are shaped by complex interactions among geographic, socioeconomic, and demographic factors, leading to unequal health outcomes and limited access to essential services. This study aims to analyze these disparities over the past decade and regional variations in public insurance utilization. Using a mixed-methods approach, the analysis integrates five national datasets: Small Area Health Insurance Estimates (SAHIE), National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), Area Health Resource Files …
The Effects Of National Park Redesignations On Local Economies, Joshua Hennings
The Effects Of National Park Redesignations On Local Economies, Joshua Hennings
Geography and Geology Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
The United States National Park Service (NPS), and especially its National Parks, has experienced rapid visitation increases since the early 2010s. Communities that surround National Parks often rely on park visitation for labor income, jobs, visitor spending, and general economic output. NPS sites that are promoted to the NPS’s highest designation of National Park typically receive increased funding and notoriety, leading to significant surges in visitation.
To analyze the economic effects that the increased visitation of newly promoted National Parks has on local economies, this study analyzes two National Parks: New River Gorge (NERI – promoted in 2020) and Pinnacles …
Morphology Of Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus Dolomieu) In Arkansas, Robert Laroche
Morphology Of Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus Dolomieu) In Arkansas, Robert Laroche
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
The Smallmouth Bass, Micropterus dolomieu, is one of the most important game fishes in Arkansas. Three distinct lineages are recognized from different river basins: the Northern, Neosho, and Ouachita Smallmouth Bass. Understanding the biodiversity within this species complex inhabiting different water bodies in Arkansas is important for effective management of the fisheries resource and to guide conservation efforts. But current data on distribution of distinct forms are insufficient to guide management. The primary goals of the study presented here was to quantify morphological characteristics to identify distinct lineages of Smallmouth Bass, and to determine their specific locations within Arkansas streams …
The Prevalence Of Cytauxzoon Felis In Southern United States, Anna Haynes
The Prevalence Of Cytauxzoon Felis In Southern United States, Anna Haynes
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Cytauxzoonosis, caused by transmission from a tick infected with the pathogen Cytauxzoon felis, is considered an emerging tick-borne disease in domestic felines. While not as fatal in other vertebrates such as the reservoir host Lynx rufus (bobcat), in domestic cats, infection is fatal nearly 100% of the time. This study sought to screen ticks pulled from felines for the pathogen across three states in an area identified as a hotspot. Out of 80 ticks screened, 12 tested positive for the pathogen. The positive population of ticks came from 3 neighboring counties in Southern Missouri: Jasper, McDonald, and Newton. McDonald …

Ratemaking’S Trilemma And The Case For Time-Based Electricity Rates, Kyle J. Blasinsky
Ratemaking’S Trilemma And The Case For Time-Based Electricity Rates, Kyle J. Blasinsky
UC Law Environmental Journal
Ratemaking has a trilemma. How should utilities and policymakers balance the competing goals of ratemaking: sufficiency, efficiency, and equity? Sufficiency is principally a legal constraint that creates a revenue floor during ratemakings to address concerns about unconstitutional takings. The latter goals—efficiency and equity—have fewer legal limitations but compel important policy tradeoffs when designing rate structures for electricity consumers. Recently, technological ad-vancements and shifting social priorities have prompted a rebalancing of these seemingly conflicting goals. New technologies have made time-based electricity rates a viable means of demand response in many communities, reducing the need for expensive and polluting peaker plants and …
Advancing Snow Cover Observations In Glacierized And Alpine Environments Using Optical Remote Sensing, Rainey Aberle
Advancing Snow Cover Observations In Glacierized And Alpine Environments Using Optical Remote Sensing, Rainey Aberle
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Warming air temperatures in recent years have led to declines in seasonal snow pack across western North America. These changes have profoundly impacted communities that depend on seasonal snow melt for water resources, as well as glaciers that act as critical long-term reservoirs in the region. While global snow cover extent products are available, they often fail to reliably distinguish between snow, glacier ice, and clouds, which are prevalent in western North America. Additionally, water managers in the region typically rely on point-based observations of snow mass for decision-making, despite the pressing need for comprehensive, watershed-scale estimates. To address these …

This dissertation research was written and pursued to explore the experience of Hispanic/Latinx faculty within academia. A phenomenological, qualitative methodology was utilized to explore this phenomenon. The researcher used listservs, Facebook groups, and snowball sampling to recruit participants. Potential participants completed a prescreening questionnaire and were then contacted to participate in the interview portion of the study. Ten individuals thoroughly described their experiences holding a Hispanic/Latinx faculty identity within academia. The following six themes emerged from data analysis of the interviews: a) Impacts of the Lack of Representation of Diverse Faculty, b) Challenging Experiences of Hispanic/Latinx Faculty, c) Positive Experiences …
Evaluating The Indirect Effect Of Microaffirmations On Intersecting Marginalized Identities And School Sense Of Belonging Among School Psychology Graduate Students, April Pratt
Dissertations
There is a discrepancy between the proportion of school psychologists identified as racially, ethnically, or linguistically diverse (REL) in the United States and the proportion of REL students they serve (Blake et al., 2016; Proctor & Owens, 2019). Current data estimates over 80% of school psychologists identify as white (Goforth et al., 2021), whereas more than 50% of U.S. public school students have non-white racial/ethnic identities (Irwin et al., 2024). In addition to increased recruitment of REL students to school psychology graduate programs, trainers in these programs must implement effective strategies to ensure retention. One method is to increase students’ …

Queering Carceralism, James Gacek
Queering Carceralism, James Gacek
Vanderbilt Social Justice Reporter
This article endeavours to expand the horizons of queer carceral studies, recognizing it is an apt frame of reference for reconsidering empirical research and advocacy which welcomes queerness as a central and fundamental analytic lens to interrogate carceral capitalist logics. As I have argued elsewhere, we find ourselves in quite the carceral age. Despite the fact queer, trans, and gender nonconforming people continue to be disproportionately incarcerated, if not otherwise affected by the carceral system, queer studies has paid scant attention to the prison, while critical prison studies has only somewhat engaged with queerness. Indeed, the historical illegality, costs, and …
The Adirondack Frontier: Reclaiming A Vital Role In Shaping The Nation, Peter Nelson
The Adirondack Frontier: Reclaiming A Vital Role In Shaping The Nation, Peter Nelson
Master's Theses
The traditional version of Adirondack history from the revolutionary period to the middle of the nineteenth century, which portrays the region as unexplored primeval wilderness, is nineteenth-century romantic mythology. It ignores thousands of years of Indigenous habitation and misrepresents early Euro-American activity in the region as well. In fact, from the earliest days of colonial exploration of North America until the middle of the 19th-Century, New York's Adirondack region was a dynamic American frontier, as important in shaping the destiny of the nation as the Northwest Territory or, later, the West. Activities in the Adirondack frontier contributed to the decimation …

From Cuny To Columbia: A Comparative Analysis Of Student Movements At Private And Public Institutions, Mirabel Sandler
Public Administration & Policy
In this paper, I will argue that while student movements at Columbia were often able to achieve short-term institutional changes, in part due to the University’s flexibility to cede to their demands due to their status as a private institution, these wins often do not hold in the long term. While they may impact broader social conditions, the long term impact on political conditions is somewhat limited by the institution’s insular and elite nature. In contrast, student movements at CUNY, though often less able to affect immediate institutional reform due to financial constraints and bureaucratic resistance, had a more profound …

A Future For The U.S. Department Of Education, Keith V. Allen
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
This thesis examines the persistent inequities within the U.S. public education system, particularly affecting low-income and underserved communities. Despite the founding mission of the U.S. Department of Education to ensure equitable access to quality education, systemic disparities continue to prevent millions of students from realizing their full potential. By exploring the Department’s historical evolution, this research highlights three critical areas undermining educational equity: unequal funding, an overreliance on standardized testing, and the lack of universal access to preschool and higher education. The thesis argues that equitable funding is not merely a financial issue, but a moral imperative—an investment in the …

Nature Vs Nurture: Place In Perceval, Zoe Fosbinder
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Perceval’s identity as a Welshman has its roots deep in his character, even if he is not aware of it. Raised in ignorance by his mother in an attempt to keep him safe from the dangers of his knightly heritage, Perceval represents a fascinating blend of culture and instinct that makes the crux of his character the age-old argument: nature versus nurture. Has his blood, heritage, and genetic history had more of an impact on him? Or has it been how he was raised, what he was taught as he grew? Much like Perceval himself, the answer is complicated, and …
Dental Access And Public Health Policy Gaps, Hafsa Tasneem
Dental Access And Public Health Policy Gaps, Hafsa Tasneem
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Oral health is a key component of overall well-being, yet it is often overlooked in public health policy and planning. While regular dental care can prevent long-term complications, many individuals delay or forget treatment due to barriers such as cost, lack of insurance, scheduling difficulties, and limited awareness of available resources. I did this study as I came across health disparities in underserved communities and wanted to see if the results would be similar in a university population that is insured and has access to more resources. To investigate challenges that individuals within a university community face in accessing dental …
