A Bicentennial Approach To An Exegetical School Of Private Law In Louisiana, Agustín Parise
Journal of Civil Law Studies
This paper is an expansion of the 44th Tucker Lecture on Civil Law. It deals with sources of law, codification, and the place of the civil code in the State of Louisiana. It explores to what extent it is possible to speak of the presence of an exegetical school of private law in Louisiana throughout the life of the Louisiana Civil Code. This paper is divided into five parts. First, it deals with foundational aspects of codification and of the Louisiana Civil Code. Second, it offers a conceptualization of exegesis. Third, it presents a periodization to help analyze the degree …

Investigating Droplet Segmentation With Machine Learning Tools, Brendan Rubel
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
In the study of Marangoni condensation through thermal images, a common task is to analyze the features of a single droplet. To do this, the droplet must first be segmented from the background. While this segmentation can be done by hand for small batch sizes, scalability quickly becomes an issue. As machine learning tools have historically been strong in image segmentation, this study analyzes the efficacy of implementing a U-Net machine learning model for this specific segmentation task. Through the process, tools were developed to help in the creation of training data, and algorithms were fine tuned to the specifics …

Religious Employment And The Tensions Between Liberty And Equality, R. Shawn Gunnarson, James C. Phillips, Christopher A. Bates
BYU Law Review
Located in Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is an exemption for religious employers that is often misunderstood. Often courts and commentators mischaracterize it as a narrow privilege for religious employers to hire people of the same religion. But the statute’s text says otherwise. This article resolves interpretive debates about the meaning and application of the religious employer exemption through a close textualist reading that discovers a new understanding of the structure of Title VII. Our approach applies the tools of textualism, the prevailing theory of statutory interpretation. Paying attention to the text and structure of Title …

The Mansion That Disney Built: Revitalizing Antitrust Enforcement In The Film Industry, Drew Chandler
BYU Law Review
The Paramount Decrees, for over sixty years, barred the major film studios from anticompetitive practices like vertical integration and block-booking. The Department of Justice’s decision to sunset the Decrees in 2020 came prematurely, with the movie industry today rocked by major mergers, the advent of streaming, the pandemic, lessened output due to industry strikes, and changing consumer tastes. True, the industry has changed since 1948, but those very changes call for regulatory intervention to avoid repeating the problems of the past.
For example, Disney’s recent merger and acquisition activity, together with the dominance of its in-house streaming service Disney+, is …

Background and aims: Truncating variants in the TTN gene (TTNtv) are the most common genetic cause of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) but also occur as incidental findings in the general population. This study investigated factors associated with the clinical manifestation of TTNtv.
Methods: An international multicentre retrospective observational study was performed in families with TTNtv-related DCM. Shared frailty models were used to estimate associations of variant characteristics with lifetime risk of DCM, and logistic regression to estimate odds ratios (ORs) for individual-level clinical risk factor profiles (cardiac conditions, cardiovascular comorbidities, lifestyle) and DCM.
Results: A total of 3158 subjects in 1043 …

New technologies allow scientists to study animal communication like never before. Advanced surveillance devices ornament forests and oceans, recording animals over great stretches of distance and time. Artificial intelligence can absorb these enormous datasets, sorting tangled abstractions into coherent patterns. With a sufficiently robust library of analyzed data, some researchers believe that large language models will soon learn to translate whale communication systems.

This project documents clowns and their props and performance and rehearsal spaces in New York in the fall of 2025. The photos explore the surreality of practicing performance and indulging in art. I am asking what it means to have and explore creativity - queerness, weirdness, community, and play - while acknowledging that a community that gathers to exhibit their own freedom of expression is making an active choice and a prioritisation at every moment.

Actinomycetota bacteria have specialized in the biosynthesis of antibacterial natural products (NPs), and extract and fraction libraries made from those strains remain a promising source of NP drug leads. Herein, we present a high-throughput screen (HTS), based on engineered Escherichia coli strains expressing the human (Trm5) or bacterial (TrmD) m1G37 tRNA methyltransferase, to discover NPs as novel anti-Gram-negative antibiotic leads. To harness the evolution of NPs with in vivo activity, the cell-based phenotypic HTS was applied to the Actinomycetota extract and fraction library at the Natural Products Discovery Center (NPDC), the Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical …

Background/Objectives: Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapies have significantly improved outcomes in metastatic melanoma. However, immune-related adverse events (irAEs) and persistent chronic toxicities (CTs) among this emerging survivor population likely influence different facets of quality of life. This study characterized CT, patient-reported outcomes (PROs), diet, physical activity and gut microbiome features in a cohort of long-term survivors with a history of ICB-treated metastatic melanoma.
Methods: Forty-eight patients with a history of metastatic melanoma who initiated ICB treatment at least 3 years earlier and were not currently on treatment were prospectively enrolled from a melanoma survivorship clinic. Participants completed screening …

Background: Epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) is a pleotropic transmembrane glycoprotein comprising an extracellular domain (EpEX), a single transmembrane domain, and an intracellular domain (EpICD). For several types of cancer, high EpCAM expression is associated with tumor progression, metastasis, immune evasion, and overall poor prognosis. A rare but aggressive form of thyroid cancer, anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC), has a mean survival time of only 3–6 months after diagnosis.
Methods: The levels of EpEX and EpICD cleavage in clinical patient samples was evaluated by using tissue microarray. Capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was conducted to explore the of shedding EpEX and …

Background
Goals-of-care (GOC) discussions align medical treatment with older adults’ preferences, yet are hindered by communication barriers, provider discomfort, and misinformation. Video-based decision aids improve understanding and reduce decision conflict, though data on their use in older populations remain limited. This review aimed to determine the effectiveness of video-based decision aids in improving GOC discussions and decision-making outcomes among older adults. Methods
For this systematic review, a medical librarian conducted a literature search of Medline, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL, PsychINFO, and Cochrane from database inception through April 2025. Eligible studies evaluated a video-based aid in US adults aged ≥65 …Creating A Collaborative And Impactful Research Environment: Community Partner Reflections On The Destress-Ii Study, Jane Horrell, Alison Mcloughlin, Felicity Thomas, Kathryn Berzins, Susanne Hughes, Keith Guppy, Phillip Perkins, Ralph Corkhill, Debbie Sherlock, Saiqa Ahmed, Saima Gul, Keith Holt, Karen Coombes, Farheen Yameen, Oliver Hamer, Katrina Wyatt

Background: Patient and public involvement and engagement can improve the relevance and impact of research yet ‘impact’ is often framed narrowly around study findings rather than the experiences of those involved. Understanding how involvement affects individuals is important, particularly in areas such as mental health where there is significant potential for power differentials within the research process. The DeStress-II project co-developed a training resource to help primary care practitioners support people experiencing poverty-related mental distress. Community Partners with lived experience were integral to the project, contributing to training delivery, online resource co-production, and implementation analysis. Variant calling with long-read RNA sequencing (lrRNA-seq) helps to analyze full-length isoforms and gene expression but is complicated by high error rates, transcript diversity, RNA editing events, etc. Here, we propose Clair3-RNA, the first deep learning-based variant caller tailored for lrRNA-seq data. Building upon Clair series' pipelines, Clair3-RNA enhances lrRNA-seq variant calling using optimized techniques, such as uneven coverage normalization, refined training data, editing site discovery, and haplotype phasing to enhance performance. Clair3-RNA supports various platforms, including PacBio, ONT complementary DNA sequencing (cDNA), and ONT direct RNA sequencing (dRNA). Clair3-RNA achieved a ~ 91% SNP F1-score on the ONT platform …

ΔFOSB, a member of the AP-1 family of transcription factors, mediates long-term neuroadaptations underlying drug addiction, seizure-related cognitive decline, dyskinesias, and several other chronic conditions. AP-1 transcription factors are notoriously difficult to modulate pharmacologically due to the absence of well-defined binding pockets. Here, we identify a novel site on ΔFOSB, located outside the DNA-binding cleft, that accommodates small molecules. We show that sulfonic acid-containing compounds bind to this site via an induced-fit mechanism, reorienting side chains critical for DNA binding, and that they may hinder the ΔFOSB bZIP α-helix from binding to the major groove of DNA. In vivo, direct …

Multiple sclerosis (MS) affects approximately 2.9 million people in the world, exerting a significant economic and societal burden. The disease is increasingly identified among populations considered as uncommonly affected. MS is reported in all regions of the World Health Organization (WHO) member states in Africa, the Americas, South-East Asia, Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Western Pacific, affecting all ethnicities while exhibiting substantially variable prevalences. Countries with high MS prevalence and some with moderate frequencies generally have economically better structured healthcare systems. Nevertheless, health disparities in these countries are accentuated by suboptimal accessibility of care for their minorities, immigrants and …

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are among the most debilitating injuries in professional soccer, often leading to extended recovery times and performance impacts. While much is known about ACL injury outcomes in European leagues, data specific to the Major League Soccer (MLS) remains limited.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: This study aimed to assess the return to play (RTP) times, RTP rates, and performance outcomes after ACL reconstruction in MLS athletes. It was hypothesized that RTP times would improve over the study period and that player performance would stabilize by the third post-injury season, consistent with findings from other professional soccer leagues.
