In this study, IM7/Cycom 5320-1 unidirectional prepreg has been utilized to manufacture 16-layer laminated composites: a symmetric cross-ply ([0°/90°]4s) and a quasi-isotropic ([45°/90°/−45°/0°]2s) configuration. Microwave and autoclave curing processes have been employed to manufacture the laminated composites. The manufactured composite cure was assessed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The quality and porosity of the microwave-cured parts were juxtaposed to those of autoclave-cured parts through optical microscopy and micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) scanning. Mechanical characterization of the microwave-cured panels was conducted using uniaxial tensile and flexural tests, with results juxtaposed to autoclave-cured samples. Experimental characterization revealed that the microwave-cured parts exhibited nearly …

In-Situ Transmission Electron Microscopy Investigation Of Grain Size And Temperature Dependent Irradiation Behavior Of 304l Stainless Steel, Anish Ranjan, Matthew Luebbe, Nastaran Motaharinia, Wei Ying Chen, Frank Liou, Haiming Wen

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The influence of grain size, irradiation temperature, and dose on the evolution of irradiation-induced defects in austenitic 304L stainless steel (SS) was systematically investigated. Coarse-grained (CG), ultrafine-grained (UFG), and nanocrystalline (NC) specimens were exposed to irradiation doses up to 10 displacements per atom (dpa) at room temperature (RT), 300°C, and 500°C. Dislocation loop size and density were quantitatively analyzed using transmission electron microscopy, and results showed that the dislocation loop size remained comparable across different grain sizes. However, loop density was strongly dependent on the grain size. The CG specimens exhibited the highest loop density due to a limited fraction …

Optimizing Uav Swarm Deployment For Efficient Communication Signal Strength Alignment In Disaster Scenarios, Mina Khalilzadeh Fathi, Chaoying Pei

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In disaster scenarios, establishing reliable communication infrastructure is critical, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarms offer a promising solution as temporary base stations. This study models communication demand in disaster-affected areas by applying Gaussian kernels to building data, forming a spatial demand distribution. Signal strength is estimated using the normalized inverse Free Space Path Loss (FSPL) to account for realistic attenuation. To guide UAV placement, we extract high-demand regions from the demand distribution using a gradient-based thresholding method. Based on this information, we develop a greedy algorithm to iteratively position UAVs for optimal coverage in areas with the greatest communication …

Aperiodically Intermittent Dynamic Event-Triggered Control For Predefined-Time Synchronization Of Stochastic Complex Networks, Lei Xue, Haoyu Zhou, Yongbao Wu, Jian Liu, Donald C. Wunsch Jan 2025

Aperiodically Intermittent Dynamic Event-Triggered Control For Predefined-Time Synchronization Of Stochastic Complex Networks, Lei Xue, Haoyu Zhou, Yongbao Wu, Jian Liu, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, the problem of practical predefined-time synchronization in mean square (PTSMS) of stochastic complex networks (SCNs) is investigated through dynamic event-triggered control (E-TC). Different from the existing literature, this paper considers the dynamic E-TC in an a periodically intermittent control framework and employs the average control rate, which makes it easier to satisfy the conditions of the theorem. In comparison to existing finite-time and fixed-time synchronization, by introducing the time-varying function, it can be guaranteed that all states of SCNs achieve the practical PTSMS within a preset time without calculating the convergence time. Combined with stochastic analysis theory, …

A Low-Frequency-Stable Higher-Order Isogeometric Discretization Of The Augmented Electric Field Integral Equation, Maximilian Nolte, Riccardo Torchio, Sebastian Schöps, Jürgen Dölz, Felix Wolf, Albert E. Ruehli

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This contribution investigates the connection between Iso geometric analysis (IGA) and integral equation (IE) methods for full-wave electromagnetic problems up to the low-frequency limit. The proposed spline-based IE method allows for an exact representation of the model geometry described in terms of nonuniform rational B-splines (NURBS) without meshing. This is particularly useful when high accuracy is required or when meshing is cumbersome, for instance, during the optimization of electric components. The augmented electric field IE (EFIE) is adopted, and the deflation method is applied, so the low-frequency breakdown is avoided. The extension to higher-order basis functions is analyzed and the …

Discrimination Of Temperature And Strain By Characterizing Two Femtosecond Laser-Written Coincident Sapphire Fiber Bragg Gratings For Harsh Environment Applications, Farhan Mumtaz, Bohong Zhang, Koustav Dey, Jeffrey D. Smith, Ronald J. O'Malley, Jie Huang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this study, two co-incident sapphire fiber Bragg gratings (SFBGs) were successfully inscribed utilizing a femtosecond (fs) laser to achieve a high fringe contrast interferogram. These two SFBGs employ a unique configuration, one parallel to the center axis, called p-SFBG, and the other forming an angle from the center-axis, called a-SFBG, allowing for simultaneous strain and temperature measurements with low crosstalk. As a proof of concept, p-SFBG and a-SFBG using line-by-line method are characterized, which are shorter in length (i.e., 1.5 mm), producing reflectivity of ~3dB. This effort demonstrates the use of two coincident SFBGs forming an angle of 2.29° …

Explainable And Safety Aware Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based Control Of Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems Using Neural Network Gradient Decomposition, Behzad Farzanegan, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents an explainable deep-reinforcement learning (DRL)-based safety-aware optimal adaptive tracking (SOAT) scheme for a class of nonlinear discrete-time (DT) affine systems subject to state inequality constraints. The DRL-based SOAT utilizes a multilayer neural network (MNN)-based actor-critic to estimate the cost function and optimal policy while the MNN update laws are tuned both using the singular value decomposition (SVD) of activation function gradient in order to mitigate the vanishing gradient issue and safety-aware Bellman error at each layer. An approximate safety-aware optimal policy is developed using Karush–Kuhn–Tucker (KKT) conditions by incorporating the higher-order control barrier function (HOCBF) into the …

Adaptive Nussbaum Design For Nonholonomic Systems With Asymptotic Stabilization Against False Data Injection, Guilong Liu, Yongliang Yang, Weinan Gao, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This article addresses the stabilization challenges of nonholonomic systems under the threat of false data injection (FDI) attacks, which compromise the integrity of state information. A novel adaptive control strategy using Nussbaum-type gains is proposed to ensure the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system while maintaining signal boundedness. The approach extends conventional Nussbaum designs to handle multiple unknown control directions. It integrates online learning mechanisms to mitigate the impact of FDI attacks. Additionally, adaptive backstepping and fuzzy-logic systems are utilized to approximate and compensate for unknown nonlinear dynamics. The methodology transforms nonholonomic systems into equivalent cascade structures to address inherent …

Safe Optimal Control Of Quadrotor Formations Using Multilayer Neural Networks And Continual Learning, Ehsan Soleimani, Irfan Ahmad Ganie, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This article presents an integral reinforcement learning-based optimal formation tracking scheme for multiple quadrotors unmanned aerial vehicles (QUAVs) experiencing nonlinear coupled dynamics and subject to constraints. We use multilayer neural networks (MNN) within an actor-critic framework where the MNN weights are tuned using singular value decomposition (SVD) of the activation function gradient to approximate optimal control policy via backstepping. Additionally, barrier Lyapunov functions (BLF) are introduced to ensure set invariance, thereby maintaining the quadrotors within a defined safety space due to constraints. A novel weight update law for each layer is derived using the HJB approximation error and control input …

Prescribed-Time Nash Equilibrium Seeking For Pursuit-Evasion Game Under Intermittent Control With Undirected/Directed Graph, Lei Xue, Jianfeng Ye, Yongbao Wu, Jian Liu, D. C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper studies the prescribed-time Nash equilibrium (PTNE) seeking problem of the pursuit-evasion game (PEG) with second-order dynamics under the intermittent control (IC) strategy. To achieve Nash equilibrium (NE) in a user-defined prescribed-time, a time-varying high-gain function is incorporated into the design. The core challenge lies in applying IC to NE seeking, which complicates the convergence analysis and control design. To address this sticking point, we construct an auxiliary function and propose a Lyapunov function considering second-order dynamics to solve the PTNE seeking problem of PEG. Building upon the results for undirected graphs, we further extend our findings to directed …

Multi-Model Safe Neuro-Optimal Output Tracking Control Of Autonomous Surface Vessels With Explainable Ai, Behzad Farzanegan, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a safety-aware deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based trajectory tracking control of autonomous surface vessels (ASVs). A multilayer neural network (MNN) observer estimates the ASV's state and uncertain dynamics. By utilizing the estimate state vector from the observer, a safety-aware DRL-based optimal policy is formulated using control barrier function (CBF) and Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. An actor-critic MNN with singular value decomposition (SVD)-based update mitigates vanishing gradients. To enhance adaptability, an online safe lifelong learning (SLL) scheme counters catastrophic forgetting across varying ASV dynamics. The Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) method identifies key features influencing the control policy. Simulations on an …

Reinforcement Learning-Based Nonlinear Optimal Discrete-Time Control Of Power Systems, Vijay Kumar Singh, Behzad Farzanegan, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a partially model-free adaptive optimal tracking control method for power systems, specifically targeting a synchronous generator connected through a reactive transmission line. By integrating the tracking error dynamics with reference trajectory dynamics, an augmented system is created. A discounted performance function is introduced to address the nonlinear tracking problem optimally. Unlike traditional methods that compute feedforward and feedback terms separately, the proposed approach calculates both simultaneously by minimizing the discounted performance function. The discrete-time tracking Bellman and Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations are derived, and a reinforcement learning (RL)-based technique is employed to solve the optimal policy online without …

A Non-Destructive And Simple Setup Method For Dielectric Liquid Characterization In A Wide Frequency Range With Djordjevic-Sarkar Model, Reza Vahdani, Reza Asadi, Seyedmehdi Mousavi, Xiaoning Ye, Donghyun Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper introduces a non-destructive and simple setup method for characterizing dielectric liquids over a broad frequency range (up to 30 GHz) using the Djordjevic-Sarkar model. By employing a differential microstrip line and comparing scattering parameters in air-filled and liquid-immersed scenarios, the proposed method achieves precise dielectric constant (DK) and dissipation factor (Df) extraction. 2 Liquid samples (PAO4 and DC-15) were tested using this method. Validation against the cavity resonance method demonstrates a strong agreement for the extracted DK values, with a relative error of less than 1.5 %, indicating high accuracy. However, the method is less sensitive to Df, …

Interactive Video Search With Multi-Modal Llm Video Captioning, Yu-Tong Cheng, Jiaxin Wu, Zhixin Ma, Jiangshan He, Xiao-Yong Wei, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cross-modal representation learning is essential for interactive text-to-video search tasks. However, the representation learning is limited by the size and quality of video-caption pairs. To improve the search accuracy, we propose to enlarge the size of available video-caption pairs by leveraging multi-model LLM on video captioning. Specifically, we use LLM to generate video captions for a large video collection (i.e., WebVid dataset) and use the generated video-caption pairs to pre-train a text-to-video search model. Additionally, we use LLM to generate fine-grained captions for test video collections to enable text-to-caption retrieval. Furthermore, we build a semantic overview of the retrieved rank …

Neuron Semantic-Guided Test Generation For Deep Neural Networks Fuzzing, Li Huang, Weifeng Sun, Meng Yan, Zhongxin Liu, Yan Lei, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In recent years, significant progress has been made in testing methods for deep neural networks (DNNs) to ensure their correctness and robustness. Coverage-guided criteria, such as neuron-wise, layer-wise, and path-/trace-wise, have been proposed for DNN fuzzing. However, existing coverage-based criteria encounter performance bottlenecks for several reasons: Testing Adequacy: Partial neural coverage criteria have been observed to achieve full coverage using only a small number of test inputs. In this case, increasing the number of test inputs does not consistently improve the quality of models. Interpretability: The current coverage criteria lack interpretability. Consequently, testers are unable to identify and understand which …

Double Oracle Neural Architecture Search For Game Theoretic Deep Learning Models, Aye Phyu Phyu Aung, Xinrun Wang, Ruiyu Wang, Hau Chan, Bo An, Xiaoli Li, J. Senthilnath

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose a new approach to train deep learning models using game theory concepts including Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and Adversarial Training (AT) where we deploy a double-oracle framework using best response oracles. GAN is essentially a two-player zero-sum game between the generator and the discriminator. The same concept can be applied to AT with attacker and classifier as players. Training these models is challenging as a pure Nash equilibrium may not exist and even finding the mixed Nash equilibrium is difficult as training algorithms for both GAN and AT have a large-scale strategy space. Extending our …

Defending Federated Recommender Systems Against Untargeted Attacks: A Contribution-Aware Robust Aggregation Scheme, Ruicheng Liang, Yuanchun Jiang, Feida Zhu, Ling Cheng, Huiwen Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Federated recommender systems (FedRSs) effectively tackle the tradeoff between recommendation accuracy and privacy preservation. However, recent studies have revealed severe vulnerabilities in FedRSs, particularly against untargeted attacks seeking to undermine their overall performance. Defense methods employed in traditional recommender systems are not applicable to FedRSs, and existing robust aggregation schemes for other federated learning-based applications have proven ineffective in FedRSs. Building on the observation that malicious clients contribute negatively to the training process, we design a novel contribution-aware robust aggregation scheme to defend FedRSs against untargeted attacks, named contribution-aware Bayesian knowledge distillation aggregation (ConDA), comprising two key components for the …

Linguistic theories distinguish between external and internal agreement (e.g., noun-verb agreement vs. noun-modifier agreement, the latter also known as concord) and model them using different mechanisms. While this distinction has garnered considerable attention in syntactic theory, it remains largely unexplored in experimental work. In an effort to address this gap, we conducted two studies of external/internal agreement in Russian using self-paced reading and eye-tracking while reading. We measured the response to violations generated when native speakers encounter a noun that mismatches the features on an earlier element inflected for agreement (verb, modifying adjective, and predicative adjective). Both experimental studies found …

Instantaneous Hydrolysis Of Methyl Paraoxon Nerve Agent Simulant Is Catalyzed By Nontoxic Aminoguanidine Imines, Emmanuel Kingsley Darkwah, Puspa Aryal, Chi Zhang, Charles B. Musgrave, William A. Goddard, V. Prakash Reddy

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Exposure to organophosphate-based nerve agents and pesticides poses health and security threats to civilians, soldiers, and first responders. Thus, there is a need to develop effective decontamination agents that are nonhazardous to human health. To address this, we demonstrate that instantaneous hydrolysis of methyl paraoxon (Me-POX), a nerve agent simulant, can be achieved in the presence of aminoguanidine imines at pH 10: ● the pyridine-4-aldehyde aminoguanidine-imine (1) and ● the 2,3-butanedione aminoguanidine-imine (2). The hydrolysis of Me-POX under these conditions is substantially faster than that of the state-of-the-art decontaminating agent, Dekon-139 (2,3-butanedione oxime, potassium salt). Furthermore, Dekon-139 shows adverse effects …

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Surface displacement caused by natural and anthropogenic activities poses a significant risk to subsurface pipelines, particularly in areas experiencing subsidence. Stress and strain induced by deformation can lead to pipeline buckling and potential vulnerability. This study applies a multidisciplinary approach integrating interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) deformation analysis, well data, and geological context to assess the risk to oil and gas pipelines in Iran's Qazvin plain. The focus is on evaluating the impact of an unconfined aquifer, which has a lower risk of subsidence compared to a confined aquifer, on pipeline infrastructure. We analyzed multitemporal Sentinel-1 data collected between 2014 …

Graphite Particles Modified By Zno Atomic Layer Deposition For Li-Ion Battery Anodes, Ahmad Helaley, Han Yu, Xinhua Liang

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Graphite, with a modest specific capacity of 372 mA h g−1, is a stable material for lithium-ion battery anodes. However, its capacity is inadequate to meet the growing power demands because the formation of an irregular solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) can result in unstable performance. In this research, we used a few cycles of atomic layer deposition (ALD) to deposit ZnO on graphite particles as an anode with improved electrochemical stability. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that ZnO was in the form of nanoparticles due to the inert surface properties of graphite and only a few cycles of ALD. Electrochemical characterization …
