Contested Class Hegemonies And The Limits Of Ethnic Politics In Zambia: The Case Of The 2021 Elections, Jotham C. Momba
Contested Class Hegemonies And The Limits Of Ethnic Politics In Zambia: The Case Of The 2021 Elections, Jotham C. Momba
Southern African Journal of Policy and Development
Ethnic politics in Zambia is a function of the extent to which the petty bourgeoisie, who thrive largely on the ideology of tribalism, exercise strong hegemony over the other social classes in their respective ethnic groups. However, when other social classes challenge that hegemony, evidence from the Zambian experience shows that the pertinence of ethnicity as a political force is significantly reduced. The members of the petty bourgeoisie in Zambia have exercised hegemony over other social classes in the country’s post-colonial period after they successfully led the struggle for political independence. The petty bourgeoisie are, however, factionalised along ethnic lines, …
The Roles Of Literature And Film In Shaping Culture: An Examination Of All Quiet On The Western Front And The German Lesson, Charles Hansen
The Roles Of Literature And Film In Shaping Culture: An Examination Of All Quiet On The Western Front And The German Lesson, Charles Hansen
Senior Theses
This paper examines the cultural impacts of All Quiet on the Western Front (Im Westen nichts Neues) and The German Lesson (Deutschstunde). More specifically, it examines the impacts of the works through the shaping of German identity and public memory following World War I and World War II, as well as any long-term impacts that have lasted into the present day. These two works of literature, as well as their respective film adaptations, can serve as vehicles for national reflection, education, and confrontation of the past. This paper will examine the key themes of All Quiet …
Teaching Art Beyond The Hierarchy: How “Big Ideas” Combat Cultural Appropriation, Carlie Pearson
Teaching Art Beyond The Hierarchy: How “Big Ideas” Combat Cultural Appropriation, Carlie Pearson
Institute for the Humanities Master's Papers, Projects, and Capstones
[First paragraph] As an art educator who has worked with children aged 5-18 in the public-school setting, I find myself constantly assessing and reevaluating my practices. When I was in high school and falling in love with the world of visual art, I had a teacher who introduced me to the beautiful and sacred art of mandala making. We learned about how Buddhist Monks create massive works with colorful sand, and I was shocked to hear that the pieces are traditionally swept away upon completion. When I started my first full time teaching position seven years ago at a high …
Reexamining The Relationship Of Georgia’S Rural World Language Teachers’ Efficacy To Teacher Attrition, Shannon Borum, Peter B. Swanson
Reexamining The Relationship Of Georgia’S Rural World Language Teachers’ Efficacy To Teacher Attrition, Shannon Borum, Peter B. Swanson
The Rural Educator
U.S. schools, including those in rural America, have struggled with a shortage of world language teachers for decades. Using Bandura’s framework of self-efficacy teaching languages, the researchers conducted a study using the same methods as an earlier study of rural world language teacher attrition in Georgia. Contrary to those findings, results in the present study indicate that teacher efficacy is not a factor in one’s decision to remain in or leave the teaching profession in Georgia; environmental factors appear to be a stronger indicator of rural world language teacher attrition. The study also has implications for teacher and administrator preparation …

Effects Of Digital Music Production On The Music Industry And Genre Evolution, Levi M. Williams
Selected Honors Theses
Innovation and invention have often marked turning points in large industries and cultural movements, and music creation is no different. Many innovations have been made within music recording and production, and each one has reshaped the industry. Digital music production methods, being the latest in this chain of innovations, are relatively new and unstudied in their effects on the music industry and the ways they may be shaping major genres. This review is a collection of literature and information concerning the advent of digital music production and its effects on the music industry and major genres.

The Role Of Sustainable Human Resources Management On The Effectiveness Of The Organization: An Analytical Study At The University Of Anbar, Saja Saleh, Mohammed Yaseen Raheem
Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences
This research aims to examine the influence that sustainable human resource management (HRM) has on organizational effectiveness at the university level. In view of that, the research debates sustainable HRM practices, such as selection, participation, and empowerment, which have a stake in the success of the institution by harmonizing employee development with the long-term goals of the organization. This study used a quantitative survey method to collect data from 169 university employees and analysis through the use of statistical techniques using SPSS. The outcome suggests that sustainable HRM positively and directly affects organizational effectiveness. The evidence supports employee empowerment as …
Gatekeeping Girlhood: Tiktok As An Agent Of Gender And Racial Socialization, Kennedy Elyza Davis
Gatekeeping Girlhood: Tiktok As An Agent Of Gender And Racial Socialization, Kennedy Elyza Davis
Communication & Theatre Arts Theses
This thesis uses qualitative methods to study and analyze how TikTok users and the platform’s algorithm work together to redefine girlhood. By examining individual posts and the origins of the trends that they belong to, I will show why some users reject this new definition, as others have embraced it, and what this means for the future of girlhood. This research will complicate the question of what it means to be a girl on the Internet and the challenges that accompany this experience. Ultimately, I expand on the study of gender roles and the impact of social media as an …

The Prevalent Mindset Pattern (Deliberative-Implemental) As A Predictor Of Positive Thinking Among University Students, Susan Rasim Khalil Arafa, Thaer Ahmad Ghbari
Journal of Educational and Psychological Studies
The study aimed to identify the prevailing mindset (deliberative-implemental) among university students and its ability to predict their positive thinking, as well as to determine whether there were statistically significant differences in mindset (deliberative-implemental) according to gender and faculty variables. To achieve the study objectives, data were collected using two research instruments: the Deliberative-Implemental Mindset Scale, which consists of two dimensions— deliberative mindset and implemental mindset—and the Positive Thinking Scale, which includes 25 items distributed across five dimensions: optimism and general satisfaction, emotional regulation and emotional intelligence, acceptance of others and personal responsibility, forgiveness and self-acceptance, and love of learning …
What Is Sports Wagering? A Scoping Review, Ji Wan Wan Son
What Is Sports Wagering? A Scoping Review, Ji Wan Wan Son
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Sports wagering has been defined as wagering on the outcome of an athletic competition, specifically a single-game sporting event. In recent years, this definition has proven insufficient to account for the different technological opportunities to engage in sports wagering. The goal of this scoping review was to examine the terms, definitions, and specific gambling activities that comprise sports wagering and to review operationalizations of sports wagering measurement. A systematic search was used to extract (e.g., betting, gambling), definitions, gambling modes (online vs. in-person), encompassed activities, and measurement methods. Seventy-seven articles reveal similarities and discrepancies in the definitions and operations of …

Communication During Perimmigration: A Life-Line Interview Method Study, Giada Roberta Rossi
Communication During Perimmigration: A Life-Line Interview Method Study, Giada Roberta Rossi
Communication & Theatre Arts Theses
This thesis examines the communication challenges faced by migrants and their impact on acculturation using a new approach. The study analyzed autobiographical memories of immigrants’ communication to explore both positive and negative experiences over time. The study extends previous intercultural communication research by using the Life-Line Interview Method (LIM) (Assink & Schroots, 2010) to collect autobiographical narratives from twelve participants about their communication journeys. The findings reveal consistencies with past intercultural communication research insofar as uncertainty and identity problems were pervasive, but also positively extends past research arguing that supportive environments, characterized by culturally responsive educators and peer networks, play …
Controlling The Narrative: How The United Daughters Of The Confederacy Shaped Collective Memory Through Romance Novels, Karie L. Cobb
Controlling The Narrative: How The United Daughters Of The Confederacy Shaped Collective Memory Through Romance Novels, Karie L. Cobb
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
While existing scholarship on the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) reveals the immense influence the organization wielded in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, I assert that their legacy has had a broader and more insidious reach than previously believed. Through close analysis of two foundational romance novelists’ works published during the rapid escalation of the genre’s popularity, I contend that the rhetoric of the UDC shaped generations of Southerners as demonstrated through repetitions and parallels of the Lost Cause ideology found in UDC publications and sponsored materials within romance novels written by white Southern women who came of age …

South Africans’ Attitudes And Behaviors Regarding Customer Citizenship: The Paradoxical Comparison Of The Primary And The Secondary Data, Christo A. Bisschoff, Sam Fullerton
AMTP Proceedings 2025
The current study compares the extant literature regarding South Africa to a current assessment using primary data to measure the same green phenomenon, namely customer citizenship. Secondary data were used to develop a profile of how external sources perceive South Africa. For the primary data, a sample of 513 consumers in South Africa responded to an invitation-only, Internet-based questionnaire that focused on attitudinal and behavioral issues germane to the five constructs commonly related to customer citizenship within the context of green purchasing and green consumption. The constructs in focus were green mindset, anti-consumption behavior, consumer coaching behavior, green advocacy, and …
Delirium And Derangement: Futurities Of Climatic And Islandic Relationality In Philippine Artistic Practice, Isa Lacuna
Delirium And Derangement: Futurities Of Climatic And Islandic Relationality In Philippine Artistic Practice, Isa Lacuna
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
The Philippines as locus of both specific experience and shared sympathy with regard to climate change allows for an investigation of the complex factors that describe a realm of experience unique to this present age: catastrophic weather in both its scorching and diluvian iterations. In this paper, I argue that the atmospheric delusions in the artistic practices of Mark Orozco Justiniani’s Arkipelago and the Vargas Museum’s Fever Dream point to a more expansive relationality with climate that forces us to re-evaluate precisely what ecocritical scholars have called the derangements of everyday modern life. The experience of exceptional heat and rain, …

Traversing Tin And Tides: Translation Ideology And Strategies In Berli And The Sea, Almira Ghassani Shabrina Romala
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
The children’s story Pilus Rumput Laut untuk Rasi by Nabila Adani and its English translation, Berli and the Sea, foreground the ecological crisis facing Belitung Island, Indonesia, where uncontrolled mining and coastal exploitation disrupt the delicate balance between land and sea. The protagonist, Berli, symbolizes resistance against environmental degradation, a theme mirrored in the translator’s ideological and strategic choices when rendering culture-specific items. This study examines how Venuti’s translation ideologies—domestication and foreignization—and Baker’s translation strategies shape the portrayal of Belitung Island’s identity and its environmental message. Cultural words were analyzed through postcolonial translation studies and Hu’s eco-translatology lens, revealing a …

Andean Epistemology, Ch’Ixi, And Neutrosophic Logic, Maikel Y. Leyva Vázquez, Florentin Smarandache
Andean Epistemology, Ch’Ixi, And Neutrosophic Logic, Maikel Y. Leyva Vázquez, Florentin Smarandache
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
This article explores the potential of Andean epistemology—rooted in principles of complementarity (yanantin), interdependence, and indeterminacy—to enrich contemporary science and artificial intelligence (AI). By transcending binary logic through concepts like ch’ixi (simultaneous coexistence of opposites) and yanantin, Andean thought aligns with Florentin Smarandache’s neutrosophic logic, a system that formalizes truth (T), falsehood (F), and indeterminacy (I) to navigate ambiguity. Smarandache’s MultiAlism, which emphasizes the coexistence of multiple perspectives, further resonates with Andean cosmovision, offering a framework to reinterpret mythology and folklore beyond rigid dualities. Integrating these principles into AI could foster systems that better handle uncertainty, cultural context, and ethical …

Terror-management theory (TMT) proposes that when people are made aware of their own death, they are more likely to endorse cultural values. TMT is a staple of social psychology, featured prominently in textbooks and the subject of much research. The implications associated with TMT are significant because its advocates claim it can partially explain cultural conflicts, intergroup antagonisms, and even war. However, considerable ambiguity regarding effect size exists, and no preregistered replication of death-thought-accessibility findings exists. Moreover, there is debate regarding the role of time delay between the manipulation of mortality salience and assessment of key measures. We present results …

Art In Public: Potential Public Pedagogy Post-Pandemic, Lyndall Adams, Nicola Kaye, Emma Jayakumar, Clive Barstow, Harrison See
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This article speculates how art in public space might evolve in a COVID-19 world. We examine the complexity embedded within the realm of public space using two public art projects as case studies: an artwork produced as part of an artist residency inside the Parliament of Western Australia and a public artwork commission for a highway interchange at Wanneroo, Western Australia. Both projects are used as examples to speculate on how we might navigate the complexity and possibilities for art in public as a consequence of a refiguration of such public spaces resulting from COVID-19 prevention measures. This article postulates …

The Russian-Ukrainian War In The Discourse Of The Biblical Concept Of A Just War, Vadym Dyiak, Klavdiia Tushko, Vladyslav Volobuiev
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article analyzes the russian-Ukrainian war through the prism of the biblical concept of a just war. The moral and ethical aspects of the war are explored based on biblical principles, such as the defense of truth, justice, and the innocent. The article compares traditional approaches to the concept of a just war with modern realities, including the russian aggression against Ukraine. Particular attention is paid to the right to self-defense, the role of moral precepts in warfare, and the importance of humanitarian norms. The analysis of biblical texts helps to better understand the ethical justification of war as a …

Who Killed The Law? An Analysis Of The Syrian Drama Series "Ahmar", Lovisa Berg
Regards
The 2016 Syrian TV series Aḥmar, directed by Jūd Sa‘īd and written by Yāmin Ḥajalī and ‘Alī Wajīh, is an intelligently constructed detective drama infused with political and social critique. This article employs media studies and theories of detective drama to analyse the plot and narrative of the series. In the first episode, the well-known judge Khālid is brutally murdered, prompting three separate investigations into his death. The first is conducted by his childhood friend, who works in the police force; the second by a radio journalist; and the third by an old friend of the judge, who is …

The Tragic Outlaw Hero In Modern Egyptian Fiction: A Case Study On Naguib Mahfouz’S "The Thief And The Dogs", Manar Ellethy
Regards
This article examines the outlaw figure in modern Egyptian fiction
through the lens of the conceptual framework of social banditry and classical
tragedy. It offers a unique angle of analysis of one of Mahfouz’s most prolific
works that emerges in times of growing political anxiety following the Egyptian
Revolution of 1952. Reading the 1962 film adaptation of Naguib Mahfouz’s The
Thief and the Dogs directed by Kamal El-Sheikh as a projection of the socio-
political uncertainty of the post-revolution Nasser era, this paper considers the
outlaw figure within the condition of social alienation. Using the conceptual
borders set by Eric …

Crimes Et Tabous Dans Les Nouvelles Séries Ramadanesques En Tunisie, Emna Mrabet
Regards
This article focuses on the aesthetic analysis of two Tunisian Ramadan series: Nouba by Abdelhamid Bouchenak and El Foundou by Saoussen Jemni. It aims to shed light on how the film noir framework is used or subverted to serve as a mirror of Tunisian society. The directors thus seize upon the element of crime to reveal taboos and points of tension (social, cultural, and political) in Tunisian society, interrogating family structures (through family ties or otherwise) and revealing periods of social and political tension that Tunisia has experienced, particularly during the 1990s. This study ultimately highlights how the arrival of …

Radical Resistance In The Penumbra Of The Law: Legal Mobilization For Migrant Farmworkers Under Neo-Colonial Racial Capitalism, Vasanthi Venkatesh
Journal of Law and Social Policy
Workers from the Global South with temporary immigration status provide a transitory, cheap, exploitable workforce that is responsive to economic vicissitudes and supremacist anti-migration discourse. They are created as an exceptional category of persons “essential” for their work but with no right to remain and claim citizenship-type entitlement to the Global North. The programs in agriculture are rooted in the legacies of indentureship, plantation, and other forms of racialized coerced labour. These programs continue to entrench a neocolonial racial capitalist global order where “unfree labour” is sanctified by contemporary liberal laws. Caught in the vice of a hegemonic, racial, state-governed …
Cultural Relativism In Global Pr Ethics: A Thematic Analysis Of Pr Ethics Codes And Development Of A Cultural Assessment Tool, Amaia Ham
Master of Arts in Media and Communication Plan II Graduate Projects
As public relations becomes increasingly more global, it is valuable to learn whether the regulations and codes proposed by international organizations address cultural differences. Presently, there is a division within international public relations research on whether ethical codes can be universal or require a relativist framework. This study contributes to the conversation in two phases. Phase One consists of a thematic analysis of a leading global public relations network, the International Public Relations Association, to study its ability to balance collectivist and individualistic values within the code of ethics it provides to its global members. Additionally, codes from four associations …

Revealing The Indonesian Crazy Rich Prisoner On Social Media: A Multimodal Discourse Analysis, Krisna Megantari, Heru Nugroho, Dian Arymami
The Qualitative Report
Although flexing is commonly perceived as a negative connotation in society, this phenomenon on digital media industry is fantastically entertaining. This study aims to reveal how the media shapes the phenomenon of Indonesian crazy rich prisoners. Using a multimodal discourse analysis on the YouTube video screenshots were analyzed qualitatively. In dissecting this, three terms are used: representational meaning, interactive meaning, and compositional meaning (Van Leeuwen & Jewitt, 2004). Findings shed some light on three symbolic language themes: hedonism, spectacle society, and homo digitalis. The present study theoretically and practically contributes to the dimensions of the digital media industry, where media …

Understanding Tourist Behavior In Heritage Hotels: A Netnographic Analysis Through The Lens Of The C-A-C Model, Narayan Prabhu, Naresh P. Nayak, Chuyen T. Nguyen, Gunveen Kaur Walia
The Qualitative Report
Tourist behavior in heritage hotels significantly impacts guest experiences and loyalty. This study explores tourist perceptions of Rajasthan's heritage hotels, a prime location due to its numerous converted historical structures. Employing a netnographic approach, the research analyzes online reviews from 2020 to mid-2023 on Google Reviews. Findings reveal a combination of positive and negative comments across cognitive (infrastructure, environment, history, architecture), affective (service experience, ambiance), and conative (revisit intentions, recommendations) factors. While guests expressed strong positive cognitive and affective responses, some management practices received negative feedback. High revisit intentions and recommendations suggest an overall positive experience. The study adds to …
