Transcultural Identity In Tan Twan Eng’S The Garden Of Evening Mists, Zhen Wang, Kean Yew Lee, Kee Chye Ho

Kritika Kultura

The Garden of Evening Mists by Tan Twan Eng narrates the progression from apprenticeship of a Malaysian Chinese woman, Teoh Yun Ling, to her romantic relationship with a Japanese gardener, Nakamura Aritomo, expanding the space for identity writing in Malaysian English literature that reflects the interactions among diverse cultures. This article discusses Yun Ling’s adaptation of Japanese culture at the acculturation stage, her rediscovery of Chinese culture at the deculturation stage, and her transcultural practice of different cultures at the neoculturation stage, in light of transculturation theory. It argues that Yun Ling’s ongoing negotiation, while involving a collision between the …

Kritika Kultura

This article will analyze a range of Australian picture books that both explore the topic of disability and serve as educational tools for exploring diversity issues. The books were identified in a survey administered by the State Library of New South Wales (NSW) public library service, which identified 62 books that deal with diversity. Thirteen of the 62 books were assessed as having characters with a disability—including autism, mental illness, dementia, spina bifida, neurodiversity, physical disability, deafness, and implied but unidentified disabilities. This article will analyze the approach adopted in each of the picture books using Rudine Sims Bishop’s three …

When Online Gambling Was Legalized, Did We As A Society Think About The Long Term Consequences?, Joshua Linnehan

Interdisciplinary Senior Seminar

Legalized online gambling has increased the amount of problematic gamblers, due to companies such as DraftKings and FanDuel advertising their product, and the governments in US and Canada having a liberation point of view when it comes to people’s free will to gamble. This paper covers the rise of sports betting since its legalization, and how it impacts various demographics of people in order to understand the limits of sports betting and to not be persuaded to gamble irresponsibly by outside influences.

Media Quiteracy: Why Digital Disconnection Belongs In The Media Literacy Curriculum, Katie Day Good Apr 2025

Media Quiteracy: Why Digital Disconnection Belongs In The Media Literacy Curriculum, Katie Day Good

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

In this essay, we introduce media quiteracy, which we use to conceptualize and describe the valuable learning that can happen through the refusal to take up new media or the act of pausing or ceasing its use. We see media quiteracy as an active and generative approach to learning and argue for its inclusion in the media literacy curriculum. We trace the history of critical engagement with technologies within education and then articulate what media quiteracy can look like in practice. We surface and discuss three potential obstacles to teaching media quiteracy, which include the ways in which it problematizes …

Generative Ai And Journalism: Hype, The Always Already New, Hype, And Directions For Scholarly Imagination, Nik Usher Apr 2025

Generative Ai And Journalism: Hype, The Always Already New, Hype, And Directions For Scholarly Imagination, Nik Usher

Communication: Faculty Scholarship

This essay pushes against hype about generative AI in both journalism and journalism scholarship. Emergent questions around the black box nature of AI, concerns about information disorder, and problems with the theft of intellectual property are recontextualized with a new focus – one that demands scholars think outside of the newsroom, center the natural and the cultural elements of journalism, and ultimately, remain critical about the always already new of new technologies and powerful companies looking to devalue human labor. A warning is issued about generative AI and journalism more generally, pushing us to study the importance of remembering unequal …

The effectiveness of Extension work is highly dependent on the preparedness and professional competencies of Extension practitioners. One area of training that is of importance to Extension practitioners is adult learning. According to Malcolm Knowles, andragogy is the art and science of adult learning. This study looked at the principles of adult learning necessary for effective Extension programming. Twenty Extension practitioners were trained in andragogical principles, and their perceptions of using andragogy to redesign Extension programming were examined. The researchers found that, upon training, Extension practitioners felt that andragogical principles would help Extension work to be viewed more positively …

Murder On Music Row: A Narrative Analysis Of Mass-Mediated Country Music And Independent Texas Red Dirt Music, Jennifer A. Worley Apr 2025

Murder On Music Row: A Narrative Analysis Of Mass-Mediated Country Music And Independent Texas Red Dirt Music, Jennifer A. Worley

Communication Theses

This project employs Roland Barthes' narrative codes as a framework for textual analysis to examine the underlying structures and meanings within song lyrics from two contrasting traditions of country music: mass-mediated Nashville country and Texas Red Dirt. With a sample spanning a five-year period, the study explores how narrative forms reflect broader socio-cultural dynamics and economic forces. Drawing upon the critical theory of the Frankfurt School, particularly the works of Theodor Adorno and Karl Marx, the project concentrates on the commodification of cultural products and implications for authenticity and truth in cultural expression. Through a comparative analysis, the research reveals …

Beautiful Pawns: The Politics Of Art Provenance, Margaret Simpson Apr 2025

Beautiful Pawns: The Politics Of Art Provenance, Margaret Simpson

Switzerland: International Studies and Multilateral Diplomacy

This paper examines the politics of provenance, focusing on the historical and ethical implications of Nazi-era art looting and the role of Switzerland in laundering looted artworks. By analyzing the actions of the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg (ERR), the complicity of European art dealers, and the postwar silence surrounding collections like that of Emil Bührle, the study argues that provenance is not merely a bureaucratic tool but a political archive. In particular, it explores how Swiss neutrality and secrecy facilitated the trade and concealment of stolen art, and how contemporary institutions struggle with accountability and transparency. Through historical records, museum exhibitions, …

Portugal: Sustainability and Environmental Justice

An unconventional form of tourism, the Camino de Santiago is a religious pilgrimage that takes tourists through diverse terrains across both rural and urban areas of Spain and Portugal, culminating at the Santiago de Compostela Archcathedral Basilica in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. With growing popularity in recent years, pilgrims’ environmental footprint and their impact on local communities have become more noticeable (Whitaker, 2025). The objective of this paper is to investigate the environmental consciousness of contemporary pilgrims and how they perceive their impact on local communities. The research specifically focuses on the perspectives of pilgrims on the Portuguese Coastal Route …

Attitudes Towards Political Censorship In Eastern And Western Germany, Brandon Pionk Apr 2025

Attitudes Towards Political Censorship In Eastern And Western Germany, Brandon Pionk

Political Science Theses and Capstones

Recently there has been a lot of coverage on political censorship in Germany. Censorship has an important role in Germany due to WWII. In Germany support for freedom of the press has been declining in recent years. Right leaning political parties are emerging which has caused opposition parties to try and ban them. I analyze data in this study from the Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences (GESIS). I analyze different political culture variables in western and eastern Germany for their impact on views on censorship. I incorporate multiple variables including education, gender, age, political affiliation, and living location. Early …

“Your Voice Is Power!” Examining Motivations And Opportunity Structures For High School Athlete Activism In U.S. Interscholastic Sport, Yannick Kluch, Lillian B. Feder, Tarkington J. Newman, Travis R. Scheadler, Eric M. Martin, Andrew Macintosh

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Whereas scholars have established increasing insights into professional and collegiate athlete activism, high school athletics within the United States has rarely been examined as a site for activism. Utilizing an interpretive approach and informed by critical positive youth development theory and sociopolitical development theory, we conducted semistructured interviews with twelve high school athlete activists in interscholastic sport to understand what motivates high school athletes to engage in activism and what structures facilitate their engagement in activist efforts. Primary motivations for pursuing activism included lived experience with exclusion, a sense of responsibility to advocate for change, and national momentum for justice …

Preserving Pixels: The Dmca And The Quest To Preserve Video Gaming’S Legacy, Samantha Ennis Apr 2025

Preserving Pixels: The Dmca And The Quest To Preserve Video Gaming’S Legacy, Samantha Ennis

Washington and Lee Law Review

Video games have fundamentally transformed how humans learn, play, and connect, becoming essential cultural artifacts that warrant careful preservation for present and future study. Yet, video game preservation has emerged as a critical challenge for cultural institutions as the medium rapidly evolves and early works become inaccessible due to technological obsolescence and legal barriers. Without immediate action to address the limitations of current Digital Millennium Copyright Act (“DMCA”) exemptions for video game preservation, libraries, archives, and museums risk permanently losing access to historically significant games, with studies showing 87% of pre-2010 video games are already inaccessible. Congress should amend the …

Turnitin To Improve Your Written English, Valerie Hascoet

Case studies: Digital Education

Irish Cultural Studies is a 5 credits module offered by Language Studies to all Erasmus and exchange students in TU Dublin. One assessment consists of a portfolio of reviews that students write about places they have visited and about activities that they have elected to do during their stay in Ireland. This work includes background research and short readings of their choice. Most students are not native speakers of English, but not all want to follow a traditional English class. Irish Cultural Studies allows them to practise their English skills without specific language-focused evaluation.

Historical Imperative: A Key To Korean Unification, Paul Hong Apr 2025

Historical Imperative: A Key To Korean Unification, Paul Hong

KAUPA Letters

This essay explores the theory of historical imperative as a foundational framework for understanding Korean unification. It argues that Korea's unique and continuous national identity, resilience against external invasions, and modern aspirations for unity make unification an inevitable outcome of historical forces. The discussion highlights Korea's 5,000-year historical narrative, incorporating both documented dynastic transitions and the foundational Dangun legend (2333 BCE). While the Dangun legend is regarded as mythology by many historians, it remains a vital cultural and national symbol, reflecting Korea’s deeply ingrained sense of identity and continuity. The essay examines the survival of Korea’s identity through foreign invasions …

It Ends With Us: How Social Media Algorithms Shape Recommendations In Online Reading Communities, Alana Nicole Whitley Apr 2025

It Ends With Us: How Social Media Algorithms Shape Recommendations In Online Reading Communities, Alana Nicole Whitley

Communication & Theatre Arts Theses

My thesis explores social media algorithms and their influence on recommendations of authors for people who engage with reading communities online. During a three-week research period, I examined algorithmic behaviors in online book communities using an alias. Findings revealed that BookTube, BookTok, and Bookstagram facilitate book discovery but offer weak algorithmic recommendations and suggestions. While social media algorithms excel at providing opportunities for creators and authors, they fail to promote trending and diverse books. These insights indicate that algorithms shape literary consumption by limiting readers’ choices. This research contributes to discussions of online reading communities and the role of algorithmic …

Internal Communication And Organizational Culture: A K–12 District Office Phenomenological Study, Jessica Coleman Scogin Apr 2025

Internal Communication And Organizational Culture: A K–12 District Office Phenomenological Study, Jessica Coleman Scogin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This phenomenological study utilized motivating language theory to explore the experiences that K–12 district office staff had with internal communication. The purpose of the study was to find how these experiences impacted an employee’s feelings of safety, value, and positive emotions in the workplace. The lens of motivating language allowed for a view of how empathetic language, meaning-making language, and direction-giving language shaped experiences for employees. Communication is an integral part of the culture of an organization; yet it is often overlooked as an influencing factor in job satisfaction and well-being. In fact, poor internal communication can lead to negativity …
