Comparison Of Decision-Making Skill In 360° Video To The Field Setting In Highly Skilled Rugby Union Players, Hannah J. Vawser, Khaya Morris-Binelli, Benjamin Piggott, Sean Müller, Paola Chivers, Evan Dekker
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Little evidence exists of whether decision-making in immersive 360° video is representative of the field setting in sport. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether decision-making performance of a representative exemplar competition specific skill was similar between 360° video and a field task. Fifteen players from skilled junior rugby union pathways and professional rugby union teams in Australia were recruited to complete a 360° video decision-making choice response task involving four attackers and three defenders. Their decision-making was previously assessed in a similar field decision-making task that was representative of rugby game play. Decision-making was scored according to …

Salamanders have some of the largest genomes among animals, driven primarily by expansion of repeat elements and slow rates of DNA loss. However, species in the lungless genus Desmognathus (Plethodontidae) have some of the smallest genomes at ∼13 to 15 GB, though previous sequencing attempts with short-read assemblies were still fragmentary. Here, we assemble an annotated draft genome of Desmognathus fuscus using PacBio HiFi reads and transcriptomic data from 2 specimens from the same population. The combined dataset resulted in a 16.1 GB assembly in 19,632 contigs and an L/N50 of 2,459/1.74 MB, with the longest contig at 27.9 MB. …

Finding a space for reproductive rights within constitutions that are silent on them has been a perennial challenge. Most common responses fall into one of three categories. First, reading them into the right to privacy (or liberty). Second, and more recently, eschewing privacy and turning to the right to equality. And third, and most comprehensively, adding or combining privacy and equality. I argue that while rights addition avoids the need to choose between privacy and equality in framing reproductive rights, it falls short of capturing the intertwined lived reality of rights infringement. I source from within Indian constitutional law a …

The functions and methods of the Nebraska Ornithologists’ Union Records Committee (NOURC) are described in its bylaws (NOURC 2010). The committee’s purpose is to provide a procedure for documenting unusual bird sightings and to establish a list of all documented birds for Nebraska. Species for which the NOURC seeks documentation (NOURC Review List) can be found at the NOU website: www.NOUbirds.org.
Starting in 2020, the NOURC decided to deal mainly with those species deemed as Accidental on the “Official List of the Birds of Nebraska.” Casual species and out-of- range species are now summarized in the “Seasonal Reports” of the …

Mechanisms Of Sleep Regulation In Drosophila Melanogaster, Anfal A. Abuhilal
Mechanisms Of Sleep Regulation In Drosophila Melanogaster, Anfal A. Abuhilal
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Sleep is a fundamental biological need, and sufficient sleep is required for physical and mental well-being. Sleep is regulated by two biological mechanisms: sleep-wake homeostasis and circadian rhythm. Circadian rhythms are near 24-h rhythms in behavior and physiology that are generated by endogenous mechanisms. In mammals, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is the central circadian pacemaker, which is known to receive a significant amount of serotonergic input that likely modulates sleep rhythms. In addition to circadian modulation, sleep is subject to homeostatic regulation. Several neuromodulators have been proposed as mediators of sleep homeostasis. Serotonin has been implicated in sleep drive and …
Tradition, Individuality, And Innovation In Western Classical Music Performance: A Quantitative Analysis Of Bach’S Fourth Cello Suite Prelude, Clare Monfredo
Tradition, Individuality, And Innovation In Western Classical Music Performance: A Quantitative Analysis Of Bach’S Fourth Cello Suite Prelude, Clare Monfredo
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Why do we seek out new performances of a commonly performed piece of music? An essential tradition of Western classical music (WCM) is the performance of canonical works by composers, an activity that requires the interpretation and execution of written scores by individual performers. In this practice, performers are not only expected to determine the composer’s “intentions,” but also somehow (paradoxically) share these in a “unique” performance interpretation. In musical education, performers are trained by teachers to create these “unique” interpretations by learning how to intuit composers’ intentions in a system that passes down interpretative traditions through master-apprentice one-on-one lessons. …

Moderate Coffee And Tea Consumption Is Associated With Slower Cognitive Decline, Stephanie R. Rainey-Smith, Kelsey R. Sewell, Belinda M. Brown, Hamid R. Sohrabi, Ralph N. Martins, Samantha L. Gardener
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Globally, coffee and tea are consumed extensively, potentially providing neuroprotection through anti-inflammatory and antioxidative stress effects. Objective: This study aimed to investigate associations between coffee and tea intake and cognitive function. Methods: In a longitudinal prospective cohort study, dementia-free (n = 8715; age range 60.0–85.2 years) older adults from the UK Biobank self-reported coffee and tea intake over the previous year; ‘never’, ‘moderate’ (1–3 cups/day), or ‘high’ (≥4 cups/day). Participants completed cognitive assessments at ≥2 timepoints (mean of 9.11 years). Results: Those ‘never’ consuming coffee and ‘moderate’ coffee consumers (β = 0.06, p = 0.005; β = 0.07, p < 0.001, respectively), as well as ‘moderate’ tea consumers and ‘high’ tea consumers (β = 0.06, p = 0.009; β = 0.06, p = 0.003, respectively) had slower fluid intelligence decline. Additionally, those ‘never’ consuming coffee and ‘moderate’ coffee consumers had a slower increase in pairs matching errors (β = −0.05, p = 0.022; β = 0.05, p = 0.013) compared to ‘high’ consumers. Conclusions: ‘Moderate’ coffee, and ‘moderate’ and ‘high’ tea intake may be a protective factor against cognitive decline. Randomized controlled trials are required to establish causal relationships leading to evidence-based recommendations regarding benefits of coffee and tea intake.

The Philippines has 7,641 islands, most of which are small and underdeveloped. While studies have been done on topics such as poverty reduction, climate change, and economic development, there is no integrated research and development (R&D) agenda for small islands. Furthermore, literature points to the lack of consensus on the definition of small islands. As such, the study wove together existing bodies of knowledge and stakeholder perspectives on small islands in the country using a qualitative research design. Data were collected through a desk review, workshops, and key informant interviews. Four categories of small islands were proposed, namely micro-island, small …

Script-Based Inferences In An Image Schema Story Understander, Jamie C. Macbeth, Boming Zhang, Sharmin Badhan
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Recent studies of large language models (LLMs) have revealed that they lack human-like cognitive models of reasoning and understanding. An important thread of research merges image schemas into symbolic artificial intelligence systems where their use as conceptual building blocks and primitives shows promise for the study of human cognition through intelligent systems that perform neurosymbolically. The work presented in this paper demonstrates image schema primitives being used in structures of a representation system called conceptual dependency (CD) and in broader commonsense knowledge structures called scripts. We present a story under- standing system that uses image schemas as primitives in scripts …
