Synthesis And Characterization Of Microcrystalline Cellulose (Mcc) From Corn Waste (Zea Mays L.), Annisa Cendani Haliman, Selastia Yuliati, Abu Hasan

Makara Journal of Science

Corn (Zea Mays L.) is one of the most widely cultivated food crops in the world, including in Indonesia. Corn plants produce waste, especially husks and cobs. Corn waste has no economic value and can lead to environmental pollution if burned. Corn husks contain approximately 44.08% cellulose, while cobs have a cellulose content of 45%. This high cellulose content makes it possible to process corn waste into microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). This study aims to investigate the effect of NaOH concentration and delignification time on the characteristics of the resulting MCC products. A mixture of corn husk and cob …

Face Off: Evaluating Virtual Human Expressions And Non-Tracking Control Methods In Vr, J K Sangeeth Chandran, Marisa Llorens Salvador, Cathy Ennis

Conference papers

Social virtual reality (VR) applications have become more ubiquitous in recent years; central to this is the communication pipeline, how users perceive virtual human facial expressions, and how they control them in real time, especially when using VR devices without face-tracking. We investigated both aspects in a set of experiments. Firstly, we compared the perception of virtual human emotions on a traditional 2D screen and in VR. In a second experiment, we used a validated set of stimuli to compare three different control methods for manipulating an avatar’s facial expressions in VR. These control methods utilize non-tracking control techniques, which …

The Living Dead On Mount Athos: Monastic Politics Of Escape, Patrick Reilly

Dissertations and Theses

The Monastic Republic of Mount Athos is a unique and confounding political entity - both Greek and multi-national, democratic and theocratic, autonomous and subject to the European Union - with more than a millennia of history and institutional memory. While Athos has been amply appreciated for its religious, historical and cultural significance, the political institutions which govern this community have been neglected in the modern era and merit greater attention. Similarly, while much of the recent English-language literature on the topic focuses on the near-death and miraculous resurrection of Mount Athos in the 20th century, this work also tends to …

Aspen Bibliography

Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) and willows (Salix spp.) are keystone species of montane and shrub-steppe landscapes of the Western United States. Intact communities dominated by these species provide a wide range of ecosystem services, harboring an exceptional proportion of landscape biodiversity. Land use, especially overgrazing by large ungulates, is among the greatest threats to these ecosystems. To examine the effects of wild ungulates and levels of grazing at Yellowstone National Park (YNP) and the adjacent Gallatin National Forest, we sampled plant community composition and vegetation structure of aspen and willow communities both inside and outside of exclosures. …
