The leather supply chain comprises numerous organizations and stakeholders, particularly when sustainability aspects are taken into account, making it a complex system. The complexity inherent in such systems can lead to inaccurate information, lack of transparency, and limited data provenance. Moreover, there has been a surge in the call for sustainable practices within leather production, propelled by growing environmental consciousness and ethical considerations. In this paper, we address these challenges by proposing a blockchain-based solution designed to ensure trusted and secure traceability and sustainability throughout the entire life cycle of leather products. By harnessing the inherent capabilities of Ethereum smart …

Pancreatic/PKR-like endoplasmic reticulum (ER) kinase (PERK) is a kinase that, in response to ER stress, mediates dual homeostatic and pro-apoptotic signaling. Thus, intricate regulation is required for physiological function. Attempts to modulate PERK activity have shown that the determinants of adaptive vs. maladaptive signaling remain ambiguous. Here, with purified protein, we provide evidence that PERK binds copper, identifies residues required for interaction, and demonstrates that copper is necessary for kinase activity. Furthermore, cellular PERK activity can be modulated via copper availability, and this regulatory relationship can be manipulated to dictate ER stress tolerance. Critically, these phenomena translate to phenotypes in …

The Glass Menagerie, Tennessee Williams
The Glass Menagerie, Tennessee Williams
Taylor Theatre Playbills
The playbill for Taylor University's performance of The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams.
Performed September 25-28, 2025 in the Mitchell Theatre at Taylor University.
At its heart, The Glass Menagerie is a story about the grace that vulnerability makes possible. The Wingfield family—Tom, Amanda, and Laura—are fragile, flawed, and fiercely human. Their lives are marked by disappointment and desire, yet Williams invites us to approach them with tenderness. Laura’s glass animals, so delicate and beautiful, are not just a metaphor for her own inner world but for the human spirit itself—easily broken, but capable of reflecting light in ways that …
Adverse Childhood Experiences: How They Shape Employees' Perceptions, Experiences, And Performance In The Workplace, Marcia A. Beasley
Adverse Childhood Experiences: How They Shape Employees' Perceptions, Experiences, And Performance In The Workplace, Marcia A. Beasley
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The influence of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) has been well researched, and the lifelong consequences of medical conditions have been documented. Recently, research has linked mental health concerns to ACEs, including depression, anxiety, and health risk behaviors. ACEs occur during important stages of childhood development and can disrupt these stages, leading to children learn maladaptive coping skills. The resultant maladaptive behaviors that are developed as a response to maltreatment may also hinder social relationships in adulthood. Given this, research is lacking on the influence of ACEs on perceptions in the workplace, especially from the employee’s perspective. This qualitative phenomenological study …

Antibiotic resistance is a threat to human health, yet recent work highlights how loss of resistance may drive pathogenesis in some bacteria. In two recent studies, we found that β-lactam antibiotics and nutrient stresses faced during infection selected for genetic inactivation of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa antibiotic efflux pump mexEFoprN. Unexpectedly, efflux pump mutations increased P. aeruginosa virulence during infection; however, neither the prevalence of mexEFoprN inactivating mutations in real human infections, nor the mechanisms driving increased virulence of efflux pump mutants are known. We hypothesized that human infection would select for virulence enhancing mutations. Using genome sequencing of clinical isolates, …

The sensory nerves in the airways directly regulate critical defenses and indirectly regulate vital gas exchange. Airway function is largely controlled by the autonomic nervous system, and our understanding of its sensory regulation is directly connected to our ability to treat respiratory and cardiovascular pathologies. Airway sensory afferents are heterogeneous with respect to their electrophysiological properties, peptidergic capacity, and stimuli sensitivity, which at least in part dictate some of their various functions. There is evidence that embryological origin impacts reflex function: activation of the neural crest-derived population of sensory afferents has been shown to evoke the cough reflex whereas activation …

Food and Machinery
[Objective] To construct a recombinant strain expressing the antimicrobial peptide Plectasin, optimize the high-density fermentation conditions of the recombinant strain, and evaluate the antibacterial activity of the purified recombinant peptide produced under optimized conditions. [Methods] To improve soluble expression of the target protein, the plectasin gene was synthesized and optimized based on codon preference of the prokaryotic expression system with signal peptide deletion. The optimized gene was cloned into the pET32a(+) expression vector to construct the recombinant plasmid pET 32a-plectasin, which was transformed into Escherichia coli BL21(DE3)/pLysS competent cells. Single-factor and orthogonal experiments were designed to optimize the parameters of …

Anti-Aging Effects Of Acid-Extracted Laminaria Japonica Polysaccharides On Caenorhabditis Elegans, Wang Yanying, Xu Meigui, Zhao Pei, Chen Huibin, Huang Luqiang
Food and Machinery
[Objective] To study the anti-aging effects of kelp (Laminaria japonica) polysaccharides. [Methods] Polysaccharide is obtained from kelp by acid-assisted extraction methods. Based on the aging model of Caenorhabditis elegans, the animal's lipofuscin, reactive oxygen species (ROS), antioxidant capacity, and aging-related gene expression are analyzed to evaluate the effects of kelp polysaccharides on their life span, motility, and stress resistance. [Results] Compared with the control group, acid-extracted kelp polysaccharides (AKP) with different mass concentrations improve the life span, mobility, and stress resistance of C.elegans. Specifically, AKP significantly reduces the lipofuscin content and ROS levels, while increasing the activities of catalase and …

When encountering diseases of the anterior vitreous and peripheral retina (ie, the "middle segment" of the eye), vitreoretinal (VR) surgeons are specifically trained in surgical techniques for managing the vitreous and visualizing the peripheral retina during anterior vitrectomy, and therefore they are well equipped to address the complications of surgery involving the anterior vitreous space. This clinical update reviews and compares the current literature discussing techniques and patient outcomes related to complete pars plana vitrectomy versus incomplete, subtotal pars plana vitrectomy, and addresses the proposition of developing an abridged training curriculum for non-VR surgeons to acquire the knowledge and skills …
Lysosomes Signal Through The Epigenome To Regulate Longevity Across Generations, Qinghao Zhang, Weiwei Dang, Meng C Wang
Lysosomes Signal Through The Epigenome To Regulate Longevity Across Generations, Qinghao Zhang, Weiwei Dang, Meng C Wang
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
The epigenome is sensitive to metabolic inputs and crucial for aging. Lysosomes act as a signaling hub to sense metabolic cues and regulate longevity. We find that lysosomal metabolic pathways signal through the epigenome to regulate transgenerational longevity in Caenorhabditis elegans. Activation of lysosomal lipid signaling and lysosomal adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) or reduction of lysosomal mechanistic-target-of-rapamycin (mTOR) signaling increased expression of a histone H3.3 variant and increased its methylation on K79, leading to lifespan extension across multiple generations. This transgenerational pro-longevity effect required intestine-to-germline transportation of histone H3.3 and a germline-specific H3K79 methyltransferase, and was recapitulated by …

Mixed lineage leukemia (MLL) gene rearrangements cause ~75% of acute leukemia in infants and 5-10% in children and adults with poor clinical outcomes. Protein-protein interactions (PPI) between frequent MLL fusion partners AF9/ENL and AF4 or histone methyltransferase DOT1L are drug targets for MLL-rearranged (MLL-r) leukemia. Sixty-seven quinoxiline compounds were synthesized and tested for their ability to inhibit such PPIs. Compounds 16, 17, 59 and 63 were found to be potent inhibitors with IC50 values of 0.35-1.5 μM. Structure-activity relationships are discussed. Potent inhibitors can suppress expression of MLL target genes Myc and Meis1 and selectively block proliferation of MLL-r and …

Water pollution has become a major global concern owing to its complexity and widespread impact. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) are the most common bacterial contaminants in water sources, which pose significant threats to public health. To mitigate water contamination by these pathogenic microorganisms, developing and implementing effective water treatment technologies are essential. A promising approach involves using antibacterial water filtration systems. Herein, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles were synthesized via hydrothermal and precipitation methods as antibacterial agents for water treatment. These preparation methods required considerably low synthesis time. A capping agent was …
