“The Being Of Being Creative” In Assessment: Learning From The Creative And Performing Arts, Eliana Elkhoury Dec 2025

“The Being Of Being Creative” In Assessment: Learning From The Creative And Performing Arts, Eliana Elkhoury

Turning Toward Being: The Journal of Ontological Inquiry in Education

Assessment design shapes not only what students learn, but who they become as learners. In the era of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), where information is abundant and recall is easily outsourced, higher education assessment must move beyond memorization and toward authentic tasks that cultivate deeper learning and ontological growth. This conceptual, reflective paper argues that assessment should be grounded in students’ mode of being, rather than restricted to knowing, having, or doing. Drawing on Barnett’s ontology of higher education, Biesta’s subjectification, and Su’s epistemological distinctions, this paper positions assessment as a formative site where agency, ownership, identity, and self-understanding can …

Lipid Biomarkers Predict Pneumonia Risk In Children With Influenza-Mycoplasma Co-Infections: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Kai-Jing Zhang, Xin-Feng Zhao, Xiao-Juan Lv, Xiao-Hui Huang, Jing Huang, Yan-Yan Zhu

Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases

Objective: This study evaluates the prognostic value of high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) levels for pneumonia risk in children co-infected with influenza and Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP). Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 248 children with influenza-MP co-infection (January 1, 2020–October 30, 2024). Participants were grouped into pneumonia (P, n=195) and non-pneumonia (NP, n=53) based on chest imaging. Statistical comparisons of clinical parameters (WBC, lymphocytes, CRP, lipids) utilized Mann-Whitney U and chi-square tests. Variables with P<0.1 were included in logistic binary regression to identify independent risk factors. ROC analysis assessed diagnostic performance. Results: Significant differences were observed in lymphocytes (L), CRP, TG, HDL-C, and LDL-C levels between pneumonia and non-pneumonia groups (P < 0.05). CRP, HDL-C, and LDL-C were identified as independent risk factors for determining whether influenza-MP co-infections were complicated by pneumonia. CRP and LDL-C levels were risk factors associated with pneumonia risk (OR > 1), whereas HDL-C levels showed a strong protective factor association (OR < 1). The ROC curve analysis showed that the combined area under the curve (AUC) for HDL-C + LDL-C (0.878) was significantly higher than the AUCs for CRP + HDL-C (0.809), CRP + LDL-C (0.753), HDL-C (0.807), LDL-C (0.737), and CRP (0.601). The clinical DCA shows that HDL-C + LDL-C has a higher diagnostic value than CRP + HDL-C, CRP + LDL-C, HDL-C, LDL-C, or CRP alone. Conclusion: HDL-C and LDL-C levels independently predict pneumonia progression in influenza-MP co-infected children, with dual-marker assessment enhancing diagnostic accuracy.

Unintended Consequences Of California’S Proposition 12 Affecting Low-Income Communities, Blanca Estella Garcia Dec 2025

Unintended Consequences Of California’S Proposition 12 Affecting Low-Income Communities, Blanca Estella Garcia

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The background of this study established context describing the 2018 implementation of Proposition 12 in California, a law intended to improve animal welfare standards. The central problem identified the law’s unintended effects on multiple stakeholders, which prior literature suggested could include increased production costs and limit consumer access. However, existing studies have focused on theoretical and economic projections, leaving gaps in understanding secondary data research and practical impacts on farmers and low-income consumers. The purpose of the study was to examine unforeseen consequences of Proposition 12, with attention to its direct and indirect impacts on animal welfare, farmers, and low-income …

The Mitochondria Is The Source Of Hepatic Amyloid Precursor Protein And Peripheral Amyloid Beta: Implications Of Alcohol-Induced Liver Steatosis In Alzheimer's Disease, Josephine Chu, Ross A. Steinberg, Brian Carson, Devaraj Venkatapura Chandrashekar, Rachita K. Sumbria, Derick Han

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Background

Alcohol-induced liver injury occurs in the pericentral region of the liver and can induce mitochondrial remodeling and exacerbate Alzheimer's Disease (AD) progression. Subpopulations of mitochondria: general mitochondria (GM), peridroplet mitochondria (PDM) and endoplasmic reticulum(ER)-bound mitochondria (ERM) maintain cellular homeostasis via energy synthesis, lipid homeostasis, and regulation of intracellular calcium. Hepatic amyloid precursor protein (APP) is a source of peripheral amyloid beta (aB) and affects AD pathology in the brain. Understanding the localization and expression of hepatic APP in mitochondrial subpopulations are critical to understanding aB metabolism and may play a role in identifying a potential mechanism for metabolic dysfunction. …

The Loss Function Of Usda Forecasters: Evidence From Wasde Animal Product Price Forecasts, Chad Fiechter, Siddhartha S. Bora, Todd H. Kuethe Dec 2025

The Loss Function Of Usda Forecasters: Evidence From Wasde Animal Product Price Forecasts, Chad Fiechter, Siddhartha S. Bora, Todd H. Kuethe

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

The loss function is a mathematical representation of the costs experienced by a forecaster when observed outcomes differ from what was predicted. Prior studies suggest that USDA forecasts are not optimal based on an assumed mean-zero quadratic loss function. This study proposes an alternative view of forecast evaluation, which assumes all USDA forecasts are produced to minimize the forecasters’ costs, and searches for the dimensions of the loss function under which optimality holds. We illustrate the degree to which USDA loss functions vary across a series of WASDE price forecasts. A better understanding of USDA forecasters’ costs will benefit forecasters …

Beyond The Human–Animal Transformation In Hasan Aourid’S SīRat ḤImāR And Rawi Hage’S Cockroach, Noha Hanafy Dec 2025

Beyond The Human–Animal Transformation In Hasan Aourid’S SīRat ḤImāR And Rawi Hage’S Cockroach, Noha Hanafy

English Language and Literature

The paper examines the human-animal transformation as a marker of identity explo-

ration in Moroccan writer Hassan Aourid’s Sīrat Ḥimār (2014 سيرة حمار) and Lebanese

Canadian writer Rawi Hage’s Cockroach (2008). The two texts employ the concept of

the human-animal transformation to highlight the complexity of the marginalized

existence in the world. Both texts present nuanced versions of the human-animal

transformation which renders the experience both emancipatory and destabilizing at

the same time. Using the theoretical framework of Deleuze and Guattari’s work on

becoming-animal and the deterritorialization of existence along with Derrida’s discus-

sion of the anthropocentric limit, the paper …

Latent Action Trajectory Optimization, Rahul Milind Kandekar Dec 2025

Latent Action Trajectory Optimization, Rahul Milind Kandekar

Master's Theses

Learning from demonstrations offers a path to bypass the sample inefficiency of reinforcement learning, but obtaining action-labeled expert demonstrations remains expensive and often impractical. Learning from Observations (LFO) addresses this by learning policies from observation-only demonstrations. Recent LFO work relies heavily on behavior cloning: VPT and LAPO use observation-only data combined with limited action labels to train BC policies, while AIME offers an alternative policy inference approach but requires the majority of its training data to have action labels. Through systematic experiments in the Lunar Lander environment, we investigate whether latent action methods can function when state and action dimensionalities …

Micu2 Controls Mitochondrial Calcium Signaling And Migration In Neurons During Development, Elena Berezhnaya, Benjamín Cartes-Saavedra, Raghavendra Singh, Macarena Rodríguez-Prados, Orly Reiner, Fowzan S Alkuraya, György Hajnóczky

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Neurological disorders are linked to mitochondrial dysfunction and calcium overload. Mitochondrial calcium uptake is mediated by the mitochondrial calcium uniporter (mtCU), regulated by MICU1, which can be either homodimerized or heterodimerized with MICU2 or MICU3. Though MICU2 is scarce in the adult brain, MICU2 loss in patients leads to a neurodevelopmental disorder. We hypothesized that MICU2 is required for developmental calcium signaling and neuronal migration. MICU2 is present in the developing mouse brain but disappears by maturation, contrasting with other mtCU subunits that increase. MICU2 loss in mice does not affect cytoplasmic calcium but augments the mitochondrial matrix calcium rise …

Ribosomal Protein Control Of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transformation Through Regulation Of Metabolism, Bryan Harris, Stephen Sykes, Et Al. Dec 2025

Ribosomal Protein Control Of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transformation Through Regulation Of Metabolism, Bryan Harris, Stephen Sykes, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

We report here that expression of the ribosomal protein RPL22 is frequently reduced in human myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), and reduced RPL22 expression is associated with worse outcomes. Mice null for Rpl22 display characteristics of an MDS-like syndrome and develop leukemia at an accelerated rate. Rpl22-deficient mice also display enhanced hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) self-renewal and obstructed differentiation potential, which arises not from reduced protein synthesis but from altered metabolism, including increased fatty acid oxidation (FAO) and a striking induction of the stemness factor Lin28b in the resulting leukemia. Lin28b promotes a substantial increase in lipid …

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is an incurable subtype of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Despite multiple approved Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitors (BTKis), resistance to BTKi continues to pose a major clinical challenge. The transcription factor sex determining region Y-box 11 (SOX11) is expressed in most patients with MCL and is associated with poor outcomes. We have previously demonstrated SOX11-dependent B-cell receptor (BCR) signaling in transgenic models of MCL. Here, we report that SOX11 drives BCR signaling via the transcriptional activation of the PAX5/CD19 axis. The translational potential of these results is significant as single-cell RNA sequencing data show that SOX11 is overexpressed …

Perinatal T cells have distinctive phenotypes and functions that may be due in part to age-associated features of stromal cells in the perinatal thymus. We identify age-associated changes in mouse thymic epithelial cells, mesenchyme, endothelium, and hematopoietic antigen-presenting cells from birth to one month of age using single-cell transcriptional profiling, flow cytometry, and imaging. Coordinated cellular and molecular changes occur at 7-14 days of age, designated "transitional ages," as thymus growth switches to homeostasis. E2F target gene expression declines, and the expression of type I interferon response genes increases across diverse cell types at transitional ages. Alterations in thymic stromal …

Enhanced Oviposition Preferences And Larval Performance Of Hermetia Illucens L. In Fruit Wastes Fermented By Effective Microorganisms, Resti Rahayu, Robby Jannatan, Muhamad Ronaldo, Risa Ukhti Muslima

Makara Journal of Science

Organic waste comprises a considerable portion of global waste, requiring effective management. The ability of the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens, BSF) to convert organic waste into biomass has been well reported. However, bioconversion can be hindered by fiber-rich substrates, a challenge that can be addressed through substrate pretreatment. This study examined the oviposition preferences and larval performance of BSFs in several fruit wastes fermented by effective microorganisms (EMs), which were compared to non-fermented substrates. The oviposition attractants utilized pineapple peel and overripe soursop, with larval performance evaluated among different treatments, i.e., non-fermented pineapple peel (NFP), fermented pineapple …

Makara Journal of Science

Antimalarial drug resistance has encouraged various innovations to develop novel drug compounds that are effective, feasible, and safe, adhering to health standards. One way to do that is by observing and predicting the biological activity of drug compounds using quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) analysis. In this study, QSAR analysis was conducted on the 4-N-(methyl)-4-aminoquinoline derivatives, which effectively inhibit the growth of Plasmodium falciparum as a source of malaria. The research stages involved molecular structure modeling, molecular geometry optimization using the AM1 semi-empirical method, and QSAR descriptor calculations, including electronic (atomic charges (q), HOMO and LUMO energies, polarizability (α), …

Microplastic Degradation Using Laccase Enzyme From Trametes Hirsuta: In The Silico Study, Hanzhola Gusman Riyanto, Diana Sylvia

Makara Journal of Science

Microplastics are a serious global problem that arises worldwide because of their widespread use. Exposure to microplastics can negatively affect human and environmental health. In this study, we used molecular docking methods with MOE software (version 2014.0901) to investigate the interaction between the laccase enzyme and several microplastic compounds as a preliminary study of microplastic degradation using enzymes. The Quantitative Structure Analysis Relationship (QSAR) analysis revealed that all microplastic ligands had higher Pa values than Pi, indicating that the laccase enzyme may be biologically active. The findings of the present study show that polyamide (PA) has the lowest binding energy …

Reimagining A Nexus Between Seaport And National Development: Sociotechnical Imaginaries Of Ghana’S Port Of Tema, Jonas Aryee, Casper Andersen, Annette Hansen Dec 2025

Reimagining A Nexus Between Seaport And National Development: Sociotechnical Imaginaries Of Ghana’S Port Of Tema, Jonas Aryee, Casper Andersen, Annette Hansen

Plymouth Business School

This article explores the evolving sociotechnical imaginaries (STIs) shaping Ghana’s Port of Tema, revealing how national development goals and global trade imperatives intersect in African port governance. Through analysis of policy documents, media discourse, and interviews, it identifies four overlapping phases in the evolution of these imaginaries: the industrial gateway era, neoliberal globalization, the rise of a transshipment hub, and the most recent phase of indigenous contestation and institutional resilience. Rather than replacing earlier visions, newer imaginaries build upon and hybridize older ones, creating both synergies and tensions. The study demonstrates that STIs at Tema have evolved through processes of …

Exposure to hypoxia is linked to increased cellular plasticity and enhanced metastasis, effects that are primarily attributed to the transcriptional activation of large gene programs downstream of hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs). However, translational effects in hypoxia, which likely precede transcriptional effects, have remained largely unexplored. Using ribosome profiling, we uncovered a selective translational response in acute hypoxia that is eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF)3d/eIF3e dependent and controls downstream hypoxic responses, including HIF1α accumulation and cellular invasion. We further demonstrated that eIF3e copy number and eIF3e and eIF3d expression signatures are associated with worsened outcomes for patients with breast cancer. Finally, we identified …

Conserving Conservation Servitudes: The Role Of The Prior Public Use Doctrine In Protecting Privately Conserved Land In The United States And Australia, Olivia Clausen

Pace International Law Review

Both the United States and Australia would benefit from more conservation of private land, and conservation servitudes can help both countries achieve this. However, in the United States and Australia, the power of eminent domain is a threat to the perpetuity of conservation servitudes. The prior public use doctrine, a common law doctrine in the United States arising out of the public trust doctrine, could limit eminent domain in these cases and provide protection to conservation servitudes. This doctrine states that land devoted to one public use (such as conservation) may not be condemned for another inconsistent public use unless …

Formulation And Characterisation Of Isoniazid By Spray Drying For Use By Dry Powder Inhalers To Treat Tuberculosis, Damiana Gabrielli, Seán Roche

SURE Journal: Science Undergraduate Research Experience Journal

The targeted delivery of antibiotics by dry powder inhalers (DPIs) is an increasingly important area of research, driven by the growing global burden of respiratory infections and the advantages of localized drug delivery to the lungs. Over the past five years, respiratory infections have risen significantly, with recent epidemiological data indicating a global increase in incidence by over 30%, largely due to factors such as air pollution, antimicrobial resistance, and emerging respiratory pathogens. One major challenge in developing DPI formulations for antibiotics is the need to optimize the particle physicochemical properties for deep lung deposition while accommodating the high doses …
