Testing The Waters: Expanding Chapter 9 Bankruptcy To Encourage Treatment Of Chemically Contaminated Drinking Water, Alexandra Zimmer
Testing The Waters: Expanding Chapter 9 Bankruptcy To Encourage Treatment Of Chemically Contaminated Drinking Water, Alexandra Zimmer
Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal
Chemical contamination of drinking water supplies has become a significant issue across the globe with serious health and safety impacts. While the true extent of the impact is still being determined, costs associated with remediation efforts to clean up are astonishing. Municipalities, in particular cities, towns, and counties, suffer significant damages both through costs incurred directly for treatment of chemically contaminated drinking water supplies and through lost revenues resulting from municipal residents’ exposure.
This Comment argues Congress should expand municipal access to filing for bankruptcy under chapter 9 of the Bankruptcy Code to encourage local government efforts to clean up …

This project will analyze the effects of chain length and saturation of fatty acids on saponification processes, as well as the effects of the base used in the reaction. Stearic acid, lauric acid, and oleic acid will be used for the fatty acid comparisons, and sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide will be used for the base comparisons. Stearic acid is considered a long chain fatty acid, while lauric acid is considered a short chain fatty acid. Oleic acid is a monounsaturated fatty acid. Five soap products are be made: sodium stearate, sodium laurate, sodium oleate, potassium stearate, and potassium oleate. …
To Be Or Not To Be Controlled: The Making Of Thespians In Nineteenth-Century Asylums, Olivia Kurylo
To Be Or Not To Be Controlled: The Making Of Thespians In Nineteenth-Century Asylums, Olivia Kurylo
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Throughout the 1800s, superintendents of insane asylums incorporated the works of Shakespeare into their medical practices. Shakespearean plays became a conduit of power for the asylum superintendents, providing them with a literary model of sanity that they imposed on patients while simultaneously becoming a mode of communication for asylum patients to perform as ‘sane’ in accordance to the superintendents’ definitions. While the superintendents imposed a Shakespearean model of social normalcy onto the patients, the asylum patients used Shakespeare’s plays as a conduit for verbal expression. Essentially, asylums became Shakespearean plays as both the medical staff and the asylum patients employed …

Unveiling Legacies: Exploring And Analyzing Cultural Artifacts In The Higbee Collection, Samantha Staller
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Anthropology and the Cummings Center to find ways to properly analyze an archaeological collection's artifacts to understand the overall significance of everything better. Before starting my research, I came up with the following questions: Can any artifacts be considered culturally affiliated? Is everything in the collection authentic? What is the overall background of the collection? Does this collection have any connection to Ohio history? Can anything in the collection be dated? Throughout the research, I will create an Excel inventory list to include qualitative and quantitative data from the artifacts to give insight into what is included in the Higbee …
Canine Agility On The A-Frame Obstacle, Derek Wheeler
Canine Agility On The A-Frame Obstacle, Derek Wheeler
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Agility dogs rely on speed, strength, and precision to safely complete obstacles, such as the A-frame. These athletes can experience injuries in training or competition and the variability in multiple repetitions is undocumented. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether canine mass and trained contact behavior affected performance variables, including number of footfalls, obstacle completion time, and velocity between repetitions. Twenty-one actively competing dogs, at the masters level in American Kennel Club agility, were recorded completing two repetitions of the A-frame under standardized conditions. Paw placements were tracked manually frame by frame in XMALab and statistical analyses including …

The Current State Of Dimensioning And Tolerancing Pedagogy In United States Post-Secondary Engineering And Engineering Technology Programs, Jaime Berez, Rustin Webster, Rudy Ottway
School of Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
Dimensioning and tolerancing (D&T) is understood to be a crucial element of the engineering product lifecycle and has been documented as an important skill for various careers, e.g., engineering, design, manufacturing, and metrology. Even so, there is a widely perceived skills gap in today's workforce. In response to this perceived misalignment between employer expectations and student preparation, a survey of post-secondary engineering and engineering technology (ET) degree programs in the United States was conducted to quantitatively characterize the current state of D&T pedagogy. Respondents (n = 67) who identified as being the instructor-of-record for a course(s) that required students to …

Best Practices Checklist For One-Shot Library Instruction Session, William H. Hannon Library Reference & Instruction Department
Librarian Publications & Presentations
The Best Practices Checklist for One-Shot Library Instruction is a practical tool designed to help librarians implement inclusive, accessible teaching practices within the constraints of one-shot instruction sessions. Developed by the Reference & Instruction Department at the William H. Hannon Library, Loyola Marymount University, this checklist uses a two-tier structure: Essential Practices (must-do items for every session) and Enhanced Practices (recommended when time and context allow). The checklist is organized chronologically across five key areas that mirror the natural preparation and delivery flow: Pre-Session Information Gathering, Materials & Access, Content & Search Instruction, Teaching Strategies, and Classroom Environment. Grounded in …

A Form-Fitting Model For The Simulation Of Traumatic Brain Injury In Zebrafish, Abigail Armstrong
A Form-Fitting Model For The Simulation Of Traumatic Brain Injury In Zebrafish, Abigail Armstrong
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Developing a model to study traumatic brain injury (TBI) is important as it allows for the better understanding of mechanisms underlying the disease to develop effective treatments and other strategies. Creating a realistic simulation of TBI, permits the research of different types of impacts and severities that can be seen in brain function and structure. The simulation is also valuable for monitoring progression of injuries over time and developing personalized treatment plans. Zebrafish, in particular, are prime candidates given their status as model organisms, affordability, and ease of direct observation in the research setting. Overall, efficient and accurate TBI models …

Linguistic Knowledge For Teachers: Supporting Multilingual Learners In The Science Of Reading Era, Brenda Sarmiento Quezada
Linguistic Knowledge For Teachers: Supporting Multilingual Learners In The Science Of Reading Era, Brenda Sarmiento Quezada
Science of Reading
The Science of Reading (SOR) has gained widespread attention as a framework for strengthening foundational literacy skills, yet its implementation often assumes a monolingual English context. This brief argues that equitable SOR practices require teachers to develop a working knowledge of linguistics to better support multilingual learners. Six core areas of linguistic knowledge: phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and dialect variation, are described with attention to their impact on reading development. Each area includes examples of cross-linguistic differences that shape how students acquire English literacy and highlights practice implications for classroom instruction. The brief concludes by emphasizing the need for …

Supporting The Self-Confidence Of A Student With Mathematics Learning Disabilities Through The Engineering Design Process, Esra Yilmaz Bilir, Cetin Kursat Bilir, Danyal Soybas
Indiana STEM Education Conference
Although STEM education has been widely studied, research on its application for students with Mathematics Learning Disabilities (MLDs) remains limited. One promising approach is using an engineering design process (EDP) (Yilmaz Bilir, 2021), which promotes hands-on problem-solving and fosters cognitive and emotional growth. This study explores the self-confidence of an MLD student during the preparation stage of an EDP. The results indicate that the student’s self-confidence in STEM subjects and social communication skills improved even at the preparation stage. These findings emphasize the value of the preparation stage of an EDP and offer insights for designing effective STEM learning modules.
