Does Depth Affect Zebra Mussel Length In Scalp Lake?, Zanden Mellen Jan 2025

Does Depth Affect Zebra Mussel Length In Scalp Lake?, Zanden Mellen

Journal of Earth and Life Science

Since its first sighting in 1996, zebra mussels Dreissena polymorpha have been confirmed in hundreds of Minnesota lakes. Not only were they found in lakes, but they are also found in rivers too. With lack of effective treatments to impede their spread, zebra mussels continue to colonize new areas causing ecological as well as economic harm. The objective of this study was to see if there was a relationship between a zebra mussel length and the depth, they are found using shell length (mm) and depth (cm). The comparison of zebra mussel length and depth was done by performing a …

Age Class Is Not Related To Size Or Composition Of Home Ranges Among Suburban White-Tailed Deer During Parturition, Nathan D. Pyburn Jan 2025

Age Class Is Not Related To Size Or Composition Of Home Ranges Among Suburban White-Tailed Deer During Parturition, Nathan D. Pyburn

Journal of Earth and Life Science

How white-tailed deer use the landscape in an urban environment can help us understand the effects of urbanization on deer populations. White-tailed deer form observable matriarchal hierarchies in studied populations. This study examines the matriarchal structure, home range size, and home range composition of 25 collared white-tailed deer within the city limits of Bemidji, MN. The results found no significant difference between age class and home range size or composition. However, movement metrics from yearling and mature age classes were more similar than the juvenile age class females. I propose this is because social acceptance between mature females was higher …

The Growth Of Yellow Perch In Relation To Environmental Factors, Hector Montoya Jr. Jan 2025

The Growth Of Yellow Perch In Relation To Environmental Factors, Hector Montoya Jr.

Journal of Earth and Life Science

Yellow perch Perca flavescens is one of the major fishes in northern Minnesota. These fish are important to the ecosystems they live in but, these   ecosystems are subject to change at anytime if the factors present themselves. Research was done in the past that   studied water temperature, air temperature, climate events, and human activity showing their effect on fish growth. This study looks at the same four factors that influence the ecosystem in Lake Bemiji during the month of September in the years of 2017-2024. Each factor is compared to the average total lengths of yellow perch to test for …

Relationship Of Utricle And Trap Door Size On Common Bladderworts Utricularia Macrorhiza, Tegwen Romportl Jan 2025

Relationship Of Utricle And Trap Door Size On Common Bladderworts Utricularia Macrorhiza, Tegwen Romportl

Journal of Earth and Life Science

The common bladderwort Utricularia macrorhiza is a carnivorous aquatic plant that captures organisms with its bladders. This study was aimed at setting the stage for future research which might determine if U. macrorhiza could be a biological method of control for invasive species. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between utricle and trap door sizes and to gather data on the size ranges of these two morphological features. A regression analysis was used to obtain results which showed there was enough evidence to suggest that the size of bladderwort trap doors have a significant, positive relationship …

Characters In Copyright Law: Extraordinary Rules For Ordinary Content, Robert F. Helfing Jan 2025

Characters In Copyright Law: Extraordinary Rules For Ordinary Content, Robert F. Helfing

Marquette Intellectual Property & Innovation Law Review

Characters are a breed apart in copyright law. Only they have a special standard of creativity. Only they must have unique elements to qualify for protection. Only they are exempt from analysis as derivative works when they appear in multiple works, and only they are required to maintain consistent features in order to maintain protection previously earned. These and other idiosyncrasies do not follow naturally from precedent or statutory law, but operate heedless of and even contrary to legal authority.

This article shows that, after fifty years of undifferentiated treatment, the courts suddenly began to apply divergent rules to characters. …

Effects Of Liraglutide On The Gut Bacterial Community, Jami Anne Bull Jan 2025

Effects Of Liraglutide On The Gut Bacterial Community, Jami Anne Bull

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Overweight and obesity are major health concerns associated with metabolic disorders and gut dysbiosis. Treatment options such as GLP-1 receptor agonists, like liraglutide, promote weight loss and improve insulin sensitivity; however, their impact on the gut bacterial community remains unclear. This study investigated the effects of liraglutide on the gut bacterial community of diet-induced obese (DIO) mice using Illumina DNA sequencing of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene. My study used twelve-week-old male C57BL/6J DIO mice. They were placed on a high-fat diet and treated with liraglutide (0.2 mg/kg) via daily subcutaneous injection for 14 Days. High-fat and low-fat diets control …

The Influence Of Flower-Microbe Interactions On Bumble Bee Behavior And Gut Microbiome Composition, Success Chiamaka Ekemezie Jan 2025

The Influence Of Flower-Microbe Interactions On Bumble Bee Behavior And Gut Microbiome Composition, Success Chiamaka Ekemezie

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This thesis examines how microbial interactions in floral nectar and environmental variation influence bumble bee (Bombus spp.) foraging behavior and gut microbiome composition. Pollen germination experiments and behavioral assays in the lab tested whether Metschnikowia reukaufii (yeast) and Acinetobacter nectaris (bacteria) induce pollen germination and bursting in nectar and affect bee behavior subsequently. Both microbes reduced intact pollen, but bees did not alter flower preference. Furthermore, the study also assessed how floral and bee community composition shaped gut microbiome composition across six Missouri prairies. Using amplicon-sequenced fungal ITS and bacterial 16S rRNA genes, I found that fungal microbiome composition varied …

Cgrp Modulation Of Intracellular Calcium Levels In Trigeminal Ganglion Neurons And Glia, Nicole M. Nalley Jan 2025

Cgrp Modulation Of Intracellular Calcium Levels In Trigeminal Ganglion Neurons And Glia, Nicole M. Nalley

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Elevated levels of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) are implicated in migraine and TMD pathology, but its effects on the excitability state of Aδ and C-fiber neurons and glia have not been investigated. The goal of this study was to determine changes mediated by CGRP on intracellular calcium levels in trigeminal ganglion neurons and glia in response to depolarizing stimulation. Intracellular calcium levels were determined in Aδ and C-fiber neurons of primary trigeminal ganglion cultures obtained from neonatal Sprague Dawley rats using Fura-2 and fluorescent microscopy. Cells were left untreated or preincubated for 2 hours with CGRP, then incubated with the …

Spatial And Temporal Shifts In Bacterial Communities And Nutrient Removal In Two Springfield Wastewater Facilities, Rubina Sherchan Jan 2025

Spatial And Temporal Shifts In Bacterial Communities And Nutrient Removal In Two Springfield Wastewater Facilities, Rubina Sherchan

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Bacterial communities play a central role in the biological nutrient removal and overall performance of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). However, very few is known about the spatial and seasonal dynamics of these communities. This study explores the spatial and seasonal variations in bacterial community composition across multiple treatment stages in two municipal WWTPs—Southwest (SWTP) and Northwest (NWTP)—in Springfield, Missouri. Using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, I analyzed 87 samples collected during summer and winter of 2024 from influent, sludge, aeration basins, clarifiers, and final effluent stages. I retrieved 16.4 million (summer) and 3.2 million (winter) sequences. Proteobacteria dominated both seasons …

Preventing Chemical And Biological Attacks: Enhanced Threats Requiring Enhanced Solutions, Alex Elliot Ottoni-Belval Jan 2025

Preventing Chemical And Biological Attacks: Enhanced Threats Requiring Enhanced Solutions, Alex Elliot Ottoni-Belval

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Chemical weapons (CW) and biological weapons (BW) are becoming more dangerous for experts to employ and more accessible to amateurs. Despite CW and BW attacks throughout history that killed and maimed millions of people, the international community has failed to establish meaningful consequences to prevent them. Agreements such as the Chemical Weapons Convention and the Biological Weapons Convention vow to eliminate and reduce the effects of CWs and BWs but lack respected response precedents and capabilities. The limited and inconsistent enforcement has inadvertently allowed CWs and BWs to become plausible weapons, especially to gain asymmetric advantages, while modern developments exasperate …

Investigating Social Attenuation Of The Stress Response In Juvenile Northern Cottonmouths (Agkistrodon Piscivorus), Alyssa Owens Jan 2025

Investigating Social Attenuation Of The Stress Response In Juvenile Northern Cottonmouths (Agkistrodon Piscivorus), Alyssa Owens

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

When social organisms encounter a stress-inducing event, the presence of a conspecific can dampen the physiological and/or behavioral response elicited by the stressor. This concept, termed ‘social buffering’, has been well documented in mammals, but there are few studies investigating this phenomenon in organisms traditionally perceived as asocial, including reptiles. However, the paradigm is shifting, and social behavior is now more widely recognized in reptiles, including snakes. In this study I tested whether juvenile Northern Cottonmouths (Agkistrodon piscivorous) experience social buffering by measuring changes in heart rate in snakes following an acute stressor with and without the presence …

Providing Preschool Classrooms With Sensory Kits To Measure The Effectiveness Of Sensory Input On Motor Functioning And Sensory Integration, Elena Tedeschi

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This study measured the effectiveness of sensory kits in preschool classrooms. Preschool children ages 2 years 9 months to 4 years old were divided into a control group classroom that did not receive sensory kits and an experimental group classroom that did receive sensory kits. Both groups were assessed in a pre-test and a post-test using 10 subsets of the Evaluation of Ayres Sensory Integration assessment to measure sensory integration and using the Peabody Developmental Motor Scale to evaluate motor progression. The control group post-test scores moved farther from norm and average scores, while the experimental group post-test scores showed …

Alpha-Synuclein Interaction With Gedunin, Tony Matundura Nyabayo Jan 2025

Alpha-Synuclein Interaction With Gedunin, Tony Matundura Nyabayo

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Parkinson’s disease (PD) and other Proteinopathies develop when α-synuclein misfolds and aggregates into toxic amyloids. While existing treatments for PD are primarily focused on managing its symptoms, a viable solution for slowing down the progress of Parkinson’s disease involves targeting the toxic α-synuclein amyloids. Gedunin, a natural inhibitor of heat shock protein 90, has been extensively used to treat malaria. Also, recent research investigations have shed light on its potential beyond malaria therapy, indicating that Gedunin may offer a possible solution for treating a variety of neurodegenerative diseases. Using plate-based assays, we examined how Gedunin influences α-synuclein fibrillation and its …

Investigating The Presence Of Individuality And Behavioral Syndromes In Northern Cottonmouths (Agkistrodon Piscivorus), Joshua Lowy Jan 2025

Investigating The Presence Of Individuality And Behavioral Syndromes In Northern Cottonmouths (Agkistrodon Piscivorus), Joshua Lowy

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Within the last 15 ̶20 years, research on behavioral syndromes has seen a surge in prominence and popularity in behavioral ecology, revealing that many animals exhibit individually consistent behavioral tendencies. Behavioral syndromes occur when behavioral traits are correlated with one another within the same context or across different contexts. Despite new appreciation for the ecological, evolutionary, and conservation implications of behavioral syndrome data, the taxonomic breadth of studies is uneven. Snakes are underrepresented within squamate reptiles and, among venomous species, only two rattlesnakes (Crotalus) have been investigated for evidence of behavioral syndromes. My study investigates individuality and the presence of …

A Mystery Of Microecology: Revealing The Ecological Relationship Between Allorhizobium Vitis And Missouri Native Grape Species, Hunter White Jan 2025

A Mystery Of Microecology: Revealing The Ecological Relationship Between Allorhizobium Vitis And Missouri Native Grape Species, Hunter White

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Crown gall disease can be very detrimental to grape and wine producers around the world by reducing vine vigor and yield. It is caused by the bacteria Allorhizobium vitis (A. Vitis) carrying a tumor inducing (Ti) plasmid. The A. vitis bacteria have been found in soil and cane tissues in vineyards around the world, and infect all cultivated grapes. However, there have been no reports of crown gall on native wild grapevines, and very little is known about the ecology of A. vitis in native ecosystems. I have sampled cambium tissues from three native wild grape species of …

Evaluation Of Practical Methods To Determine If A Karst Creek Is Gaining Or Losing: Case Study Of Leith Creek, Elizabeth Jones Jan 2025

Evaluation Of Practical Methods To Determine If A Karst Creek Is Gaining Or Losing: Case Study Of Leith Creek, Elizabeth Jones

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Karst landscapes are abundant in Missouri, with features such as caves, springs, and sinkholes that form through the dissolution of limestone. Leith Creek is a small stream in Polk County, Missouri fed by two springs and the shallow unconfined Springfield Plateau aquifer, a highly karstified aquifer which is made up of limestone and minor interbedded shale-mudstone units. To determine if Leith Creek is gaining or losing, stream flow, water chemistry and temperature sensors were monitored. Stream flow results required multiple visits to take measurements while temperature sensors required two visits, one to install the dataloggers and another to remove the …

A Study Of Collegiate Equine Team Funding, Expenditures, And Recruitment Strategies, Sydni Marie Nilles Jan 2025

A Study Of Collegiate Equine Team Funding, Expenditures, And Recruitment Strategies, Sydni Marie Nilles

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Collegiate equine teams (including horse judging, equestrian, ranch horse teams) have been recognized for their contributions to students' personal and professional development for post- graduation success. Teams have been used to provide opportunities, a sense of belonging and allow for experiences students may not have elsewhere. However, there is a notable gap in knowledge as to where funding comes from and how much teams may be able to budget for expenditures. Recruitment tactical knowledge provides other teams with knowledge of potential areas they may be lacking or unaware of. I used an online survey to understand current ranges of support …

Help Or Hindrance? Humans As A Range Expanding And Reducing Force For Himalayan Black Bears In Nepal, Suman Shree Neupane Jan 2025

Help Or Hindrance? Humans As A Range Expanding And Reducing Force For Himalayan Black Bears In Nepal, Suman Shree Neupane

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

I explore the relationship between Himalayan black bears (HBBs) and humans by constructing niche models for HBBs considering both natural and human influences. This approach allowed me to assess the net impact of human activities on HBBs, which face challenges like habitat fragmentation, but also reap some benefits (like increased food availability). I examined HBB niche impacts from humans by quantifying and comparing the extent of HBB niche space when including versus excluding anthropogenic influences. Specifically, I estimated the natural HBB niche space by assuming no human alterations of the landscape and compared this natural range to the observed range …

Territorial Behavior Of A Terrestrial Salamander: Effect Of Physical Stress, Residency Status, And Sex, Abigail C. Nagl Jan 2025

Territorial Behavior Of A Terrestrial Salamander: Effect Of Physical Stress, Residency Status, And Sex, Abigail C. Nagl

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Environmentally induced stressors can include threats from predators and competitors. Individuals in territorial species, including the subject of this study, Southern Red-backed Salamanders, Plethodon serratus, face ongoing competitive threats, and loss of contests may be more consequential to territory owners (losing a territory) than to intruders (continuing to be without a territory). Therefore, when the threat of increased predation risk is added, residents may respond differently than intruders. Here, I tested the impact of physical stress, residency status and sex on the territorial behavior of Southern Red-backed salamanders. Territorial behavior was assessed through staged contests with same-sized and same-sexed individuals, …

Characterizing A Rad23 Dependent Ultraviolet Radiation Resistance In Tetrahymena Thermophila, Emma June Liimatta

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

In 2020, 10 million deaths were attributed to cancer, with multidrug resistance being responsible for over 90% of deaths in cancer patients receiving treatment. This study utilized the model organism Tetrahymena thermophila to study how cells become resistant to Ultraviolet Radiation (UV) radiation, a process similar to multidrug resistance, specifically focusing on the nucleotide excision repair and ubiquitin shuttle protein Rad23. The National Cancer Institute documented 30-60% of cancers tested had a mutation in RAD23. Knockdown of RAD23 in Tetrahymena thermophila demonstrated a UV resistance phenotype with decreased nucleotide excision repair and differential expression of proteins active within caspase-independent …

What I Was And Who I Am, And Before And After, Molly K. Del Rossi Jan 2025

What I Was And Who I Am, And Before And After, Molly K. Del Rossi

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This thesis begins with a critical introduction which analyzes varying forms—such as the inverted sonnet—the schools of confessional and post-confessional poetry—and how they differ—and inspiration used for my creative work in poetry. I claim to be a poet who writes primarily based on personal memories. I chronicle my initial encounters with poetry as a teenager through the lens of confessionalism, as demonstrated by Eavan Boland and Anne Sexton. To exhibit my gained knowledge, I reference poetic theorists such as Richard Hugo, Charles Olson, Adrienne Rich, Mary Ruefle, and Gertrude Stein when analyzing which theories and dialogues influence my poetic style. …

The Effects Of Calcium Availability On Growth And Calcium Content Of Hydroponic Daikon Radish Microgreens, Cory Michael Reichmuth Jan 2025

The Effects Of Calcium Availability On Growth And Calcium Content Of Hydroponic Daikon Radish Microgreens, Cory Michael Reichmuth

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Microgreens are young, edible seedlings harvested upon emergence of the first true leaf. Their popularity is growing as a nutritionally dense food source that can be grown quickly in space-efficient systems. However, little is known about optimal cultivation practices and the effects of fertilization on growth and nutrition of microgreens. This study investigates the role of calcium (Ca) fertilization in optimizing the growth, yield, and nutrient content of daikon radish (Raphanus sativus) microgreens. A hydroponic system was designed to consistently deliver nutrient solution to microgreens grown in a closed-environment chamber. This study tested different Ca fertilization rates of 0, 5, …

Applied And Conceptual Implications Of Relational Density Theory In Machine Learning And Behavioral Economics, Bentley J. Elliott Jan 2025

Applied And Conceptual Implications Of Relational Density Theory In Machine Learning And Behavioral Economics, Bentley J. Elliott

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Relational Density Theory (Belisle & Dixon, 2020a) is an advanced conceptualization of Stimulus Equivalence (Sidman & Tailby, 1982) and Relational Frame Theory (Hayes et al., 2001) that allows behavior scientists to measure the strength, formation, and malleability of covert behavioral experiences such as attitudes, biases, and probabilities. Relational density combines principles of behavior with the fundamentals of Newtonian classical mechanics to quantify the dimensions of relational framing as a tool for examining behavior. This thesis contains two studies on relational density in context. The first study utilized relational density theory and principles of behavioral economics to measure attitudes and charitable …

Effects Of Active Learning In An Undergraduate Physiology Class Using Hands-On And Simulation Labs, Ainsley C. Frayer

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Increasing student engagement has shown positive effects on students and can be achieved by incorporating active learning strategies in the lab. Currently, the undergraduate human physiology lab at Missouri State University utilizes simulations to practice physiological concepts. The proposed project aims to evaluate if incorporating hands-on labs would improve student learning and/or their engagement. The hypothesis is engagement will be increased in hands-on labs, but grades will not differ significantly, based on previous literature. Three simulations were replaced with hands-on lab software to evaluate engagement and learning. Student engagement was assessed using a voluntary, anonymous survey. Exam average scores were …

Inoculating Soybean Plants At Different Growth Stages: Selecting Bradyrhizobium, Sinorhizobium, Or Both, Matthew R. Knoll Jan 2025

Inoculating Soybean Plants At Different Growth Stages: Selecting Bradyrhizobium, Sinorhizobium, Or Both, Matthew R. Knoll

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Soybean plants rely on nitrogen for growth, however atmospheric nitrogen (N2) is not a usable form and needs to be converted into different forms that are available to the plant. Nitrogen fixing bacteria such as rhizobia form symbiotic relationships with Soybeans in exchange for shelter and excess plant sugars. As a result, the plant can get the nitrogen it needs. There are four main genera of rhizobia that can form root nodules on Soybean including Bradyrhizobium, Sinorhizobium, Mesorhizobium, and Rhizobium. At this point, the effect that age of the host plant has on the selection of …

Learned Helplessness: An Online Replication And Validation, Arshpreet (Sunny) Kandola Jan 2025

Learned Helplessness: An Online Replication And Validation, Arshpreet (Sunny) Kandola

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

The current study entails the partial replication of a classic learned helplessness two-phase triadic design experiment within an online learning context and aimed to validate a new attributional style self-report measure designed to identify individual differences in tendencies to develop learned helplessness consistent with the original reformulation of the hypothesis. Further, recent innovations in neuroscientific technology have allowed for a deeper examination of the mechanisms at play, finding support for a major re-interpretation of the theory of learned helplessness - suggesting that helplessness is more so the default passive response, while the active ingredient that is detected or expected (i.e., …

Restoration Of Giant River Cane (Arundinaria Gigantea) In Southwest Missouri, Lyndsey D. Rightnowar Jan 2025

Restoration Of Giant River Cane (Arundinaria Gigantea) In Southwest Missouri, Lyndsey D. Rightnowar

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Giant river cane (Arundinaria gigantea), a native bamboo species, once dominated riparian landscapes across the southeastern United States but has declined to approximately 2% of its historic range. This study evaluated restoration techniques for giant cane in southwest Missouri by examining the influence of rhizome source (putative genotype), planting type, and restoration site on restoration success. I compared two planting types: greenhouse-to-field (G2F) transplanting, where rhizomes were first propagated in the greenhouse before planting, and field-to-field (F2F) transplanting, where rhizomes were directly transplanted from source canebrakes to restoration sites. Rhizomes were collected from four existing canebrakes in Taney …

What Is The Meaning Of This? A Proposed Assessment Tool For Exploring Meaning Of Life In The Therapeutic Realm, Logan S. Burris

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

It is likely that since man has first learned to communicate with one another, we have wondered what the meaning of life is. Throughout recorded history, groups of individuals with religious, philosophical, and scientific backgrounds have searched for the answer to this deceptively simple question. Previous research has shown that finding meaning in one’s life can render positive psychological and physiological outcomes for individuals presenting with depressive and anxiety disorders, trauma, chronic and terminal illness, and many more. There have been numerous attempts of creating assessments intended to measure a person’s meaning in life, however most of them either do …
