The Meta-Portal Fantasy, Alex Lawrynas
The Meta-Portal Fantasy, Alex Lawrynas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
The genre of Portal Fantasy seeks to bridge the gap between the primary world and the secondary, its characters often upended from their normal everyday lives in favor of the fantastic. I will be focusing on the genre and the effects of its complexity on its characters. For this I will be looking into the ways in which the portal fantasy is constructed, beginning with a brief introduction of the genre, and moving on to dissecting the ways in which the concept of the portal is navigated, the change and or loss of self that occurs, and finally how the …

Modeling Single-Engine Failure In Dual-Engine Tilt-Rotor Aircraft, Alexander Christopher Gaudreau
Modeling Single-Engine Failure In Dual-Engine Tilt-Rotor Aircraft, Alexander Christopher Gaudreau
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
While single-engine failure has been considered in dual-engine tilt-rotor aircraft, more complex failures have been less investigated. This thesis will model a simultaneous powertrain and drivetrain complex failure scenario during vertical flight on a dual-engine tilt-rotor aircraft. This thesis is valuable to designers and operators, as it will simulate the aircraft's complex failure scenario and flight dynamics. Complex failure is modeled using MATLAB’s Simulink to accomplish a six degrees-of-freedom translational and rotational dynamic and kinematic free-fall model. A counter-rotating rotor system representation for the dual-engine tilt-rotor aircraft was also achieved by incorporating the rotor block in Simulink. It was discovered …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Neurons are specialized, polarized cells necessary for our function, cognition, and behavior. Moreover, neurons are non-mitotic cells and must be maintained for a lifetime. Within the neuron, organelles, such as mitochondria and lysosome-vesicles (LV), undergo bidirectional transport between the soma and synapses and contribute to neuronal health, energy demand, macromolecule clearance, intracellular signaling, and cell-to-cell communication. Decades of research have revealed the significance of mitochondria and LV during aging, neurological disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and recently, novel implications in neuropsychiatric disorders. While these studies highlight the role of mitochondria and LV during aging and neurological conditions, less is known about the …

Methodological challenges such as poor preservation, site destruction, and inconsistent documentation are also considered. Findings are contextualized within wider …
Interleukin-1 Type I Receptor Implicated In Emergence And Severity Of Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizures In A Transgenic Mouse Model Of Adult-Onset, Progressive Epilepsy:, Tashi Dillon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Interleukin-1 β (IL- 1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine with proconvulsive properties that is elevated in epilepsy. The hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) buffers hyperexcitability, and deficits in granule neuron gating contribute to epileptogenesis. Excess brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) may drive hyperexcitable circuit assembly, promoting a seizure-producing breakdown of the gating function. We use a transgenic mouse model of forebrain BDNF (TgBDNF) overexpression that exhibit spontaneous generalized tonic/ clonic seizures (GTCSs) at ~3 months, which progress as evidenced by prolonged periods of post-generalized EEG suppression (PGES). This is accompanied by hippocampal hypertrophy and brainstem cell loss. A strain globally lacking IL-1 …

Undergraduate Scholarship and Creative Works
In the early 1980s Diadema antillarum, or the long-spined urchin, was hit by a catastrophic mass mortality event across the western Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, inclusive of the Florida Keys. The cause of this die-off event was likely triggered by a pathogen or environmental stressor that decimated native populations by up to 98%. The species has not yet fully recovered and is struggling with recruitment success which is why it may benefit from an ex-situ recovery program. In this study, I used single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to identify genetic variation and analyze parentage in a captive population of …

Re-Defining Direct Copyright Infringement In The Digital Age: The Shortcomings Of Abkco, Inc. V. Sagan's "Presses The Button" Standard, Shelby Mcswan
Buffalo Law Review
This Comment offers a broader reading of direct copyright infringement. The definition of a direct infringer must go beyond the person who “presses the button,” and extend to those who authorize, instruct, or force another to commit an act of infringement. A broader reading not only ensures that direct liability in copyright law is uniform with other areas of the law, but it also ensures that copyright law protects those who it was meant to protect and punishes those who are truly at fault. Part I of this Comment provides history and background information on the development of intellectual property …

Honors Theses and Capstones
Coffee is one of the most widely traded commodities globally, with the market valued at over USD 223 billion in 2023. The cultivation and management of this crop are largely carried out by small-scale farmers, who make up approximately 80% of producers and rely heavily on coffee farming for their livelihood. Despite the relevance of this crop for producers and consumers alike, these producers often live in conditions of extreme poverty. Variability within climatic conditions has increased the vulnerability of coffee plants to pests and pathogens, in particular Coffee Leaf Rust (CLR) (Hemileia vastatrix). This, in turn, has led to …

Juvenile courts are based on the premise that children are different from adults and should therefore be treated differently. Children may be treated more informally by courts, punished for different purposes, and brought before the court for different behaviors. Since In re Gault, the Supreme Court has been clear that there are limits to how different juvenile courts can be. Juveniles are entitled to many of the same procedural protections as adult criminal defendants, although the Court has preserved some procedural differences where it has determined that their benefit is outweighed by the need to preserve the informality, flexibility, …

Criminal law and reproductive justice scholars are calling attention to the increase in prosecutions for pregnancy outcomes in the United States. Trace amounts of controlled substances in newborns are prosecuted as child abuse. Miscarriages are prosecuted as illegal abortions or homicides. This area of criminal law existed side-by-side with Roe v. Wade for late-term pregnancy outcomes. The Dobbs decision has further emboldened these prosecutions by removing the protections of the Due Process Clause from the pre-viability phase of the pregnancy.

Unpunishment Purposes, Meredith B. Esser
Unpunishment Purposes, Meredith B. Esser
Scholarly Works
Sentencing scholarship often begins by exploring the traditional purposes of punishment: deterrence, retribution, incapacitation, and rehabilitation. However, little scholarship exists addressing how these four punishment purposes apply in the post sentencing or second-look contexts. Further, abstract theories of sentencing can often seem sterile and disconnected from the realities of how violent, disproportionate, and dehumanizing the actual experience of incarceration is for many people, and tend to downplay the impact of incarceration on the families and communities of those who are incarcerated. This Article attempts to reconceptualize the traditional purposes of punishment to meet the current historical moment, and it does …
