Journal of Urban Culture Research
This research redefines unity between art, design and urban architecture, and wellbeing as an active reconciliation and conscious construction. The findings resonate with contemporary creative practices prioritizing audience engagement. A practice-led and process driven design/art project, it explores the notion of harmony through the Japanese Zen of Ikebana (flower arrangement) and Chasitsu (Tea room). Situated in Bangkok, the process incorporates cross-cultural interactions between Thai business life and Japanese meditative traditions. The methodology re-traces Ikebana flowers into static lines of a steel sculpture. Placed within a furniture design showroom’s internal courtyard, the installation is activated dialogically through a survey that probes …

Ensemble Music For Social And Emotional Development : A Case Study Of Primary School Children In A Suburban Malaysian Chinese Community, Florence Kuek, Siew May Cheng, Anna Phang, Wen Fen Beh
Journal of Urban Culture Research
Music forms part of the Malaysian national curriculum for primary education, but music education is often compromised by low community interest, resulting in children’s underexposure to musical training. This qualitative study examines the inclusivity, creativity, and sustainability of a community-initiated children’s choral-instrument ensemble established as an after-school, weekly activity in suburban Malaysia, where members were recruited from lower- to middle-income families, and had little means to pursue music otherwise. Data were collected from class observations, children’s “before-after” drawings, and semi-structured interviews with the stakeholders. The trustworthiness and validity were ensured through inter-rating, member checks, and data triangulation. The findings revealed …

Alcohol-induced dysregulation of microglial activity is associated with neuroinflammation, cognitive decline, heightened risk for neurodegenerative diseases, alcohol dependence, and escalation of alcohol drinking. Given the challenge of longitudinally sampling primary microglia, we optimized an in vitro method to differentiate peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from rhesus macaque (RM) into induced microglia-like cells (RM-iMGLs). The RM-iMGLs displayed transcriptional profiles distinct from monocyte progenitors and closely resembling primary microglia. Notably, morphological features showed that differentiated RM-iMGLs derived from subjects with chronic alcohol consumption (CAC), while bigger, exhibited a bipolar-like morphology. Additionally, dysregulation in key inflammatory and regulatory markers, along with increased baseline …

The Wild Dark Or, La Oscuridad Salvaje: Illuminating Identity Through Failure, Worley B. Gierhart
Undergraduate Theses
This thesis, "The Wild Dark or, La oscuridad salvaje: Illuminating Identity Through Failure," explores how the narrative power of darkness can serve as a catalyst for profound self-discovery, particularly in the aftermath of significant failure. Drawing upon literary analysis and the author's personal experience of shifting academic paths, the study examines how confronting metaphorical darkness allows for a critical rebuilding of identity and self-concept. The play referenced in the title, "The Wild Dark or, La oscuridad salvaje," serves as a central point of analysis, investigating the interplay of theme, setting, and scenario in depicting this transformative process. By engaging with …

In 2023, hackers breached 23andMe and extracted the biometric and genealogical data of nearly seven million people. By 2025, that data-originally offered up in the spirit of medical discovery and consumer empowerment-was being auctioned off in bankruptcy court as a corporate asset. The breach exposed more than technical lapses or governance failures. It revealed a structural gap in how the law understands, regulates, and protects biometric identity. Biometric data is intimate, immutable, and implicates human dignity and autonomy. And yet, the legal frameworks most often tasked with protecting it-tort, contract, and even modern privacy statutes-have consistently failed to impose meaningful …

Neutrosophic Sets are conceptual frameworks designed to address uncertainty. A Neutrosophic TwoFold Algebra is a hybrid algebraic structure defined over a neutrosophic set, combining classical algebraic operations with neutrosophic components. Concepts such as Hyperalgebra and Superhyperalgebra extend classical Algebra using Power Sets and 𝑛-th powersets. Additionally, structures such as NeutroAlgebra and AntiAlgebra have been defined in recent y ears. This paper explores several related concepts, including TwoFold SuperhyperAlgebra and Anti SuperhyperAlgebra.

Minimal Rationality And The Law Of Evidence, Ronald J. Allen, Michael S. Pardo, William J. Lawrence, Christopher K. Smiciklas
Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology
For more than a century, one of the pillars upon which the law of evidence was thought to rest is that the primary (although by no means exclusive) objective of the law of evidence is to further accurate fact-finding by maximizing the rationality of the evidentiary process. The crux of this pillar is that the law of evidence increases rationality (and thereby increases accuracy) through admissibility rules that (1) require reliable evidence, and (2) behave paternalistically toward jurors and their cognitive abilities. This Article aims to supplant this pillar by showing that the law of evidence pursues minimal, not maximal, …

Zoonoses are infectious diseases transmitted from animals to humans. Bats have been suggested to harbour more zoonotic viruses than any other mammalian order1. Infections in bats are largely asymptomatic2,3, indicating limited tissue-damaging inflammation and immunopathology. To investigate the genomic basis of disease resistance, the Bat1K project generated reference-quality genomes of ten bat species, including potential viral reservoirs. Here we describe a systematic analysis covering 115 mammalian genomes that revealed that signatures of selection in immune genes are more prevalent in bats than in other mammalian orders. We found an excess of immune gene adaptations in the ancestral chiropteran branch and …

A Dog Tail: To Trust Or Not To Trust, Victoria A. Denishchich, Christa C. Christ
University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal
Trust plays an important role in relationships and social functioning while also influencing communication, cooperation, and emotional well-being. Previous research has found that dogs enhance social relationships, approachability, and perceptions of safety and friendliness in everyday interactions. However, not much is known about how the effect dogs have on perceptions of trust applies when photographs are used. Such info is essential given the amount of online social interaction that occurs in society today. This current study examined whether the presence of a dog in a photo affects our trust levels in strangers. In Study 1, 74 participants viewed photos of …

Inquiries Into The Mycobacterial Caseinolytic Protease System, Felipe Badke D'Andrea
Student Theses and Dissertations
Despite progress over the last century, Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), the causative agent of tuberculosis (TB), remains the leading cause of death from an infectious disease worldwide. The high global burden of Mtb, alongside its protracted treatment regimen and insidious rise of multi-drug resistance, underscores the need for non-canonical drug targets and pathways to improve antitubercular chemotherapy. Mtb's success as a pathogen is linked to its ability to infect and evade clearance by the human immune system despite a wide range of noxious host stressors. Along with transcriptional responses, the maintenance of protein homeostasis is critical to this adaptability and pathogenicity. …
Nurture Is Nature: The Molecular Basis Of Caregiver Genotype Effects On Larval Growth And Caste Development In The Clonal Raider Ant, Patrick Konrad Piekarski
Nurture Is Nature: The Molecular Basis Of Caregiver Genotype Effects On Larval Growth And Caste Development In The Clonal Raider Ant, Patrick Konrad Piekarski
Student Theses and Dissertations
The distinction between nature (genetics) and nurture (environment) is blurry, in part because the environment includes the genes of social partners. This is especially evident for parents and their offspring, where genes expressed in one partner profoundly influence the physiology and behavior of the other. Such indirect genetic effects (IGEs) are mediated through social interactions. Although parental care has evolved in many disparate lineages, in most systems it is challenging to delineate the effects of genetics and environment on the phenotypes of caregivers and offspring. This is because most animals with parental care reproduce sexually, meaning each genotype is represented …
Serine Metabolism Leverages The Integrated Stress Response To Direct Stem Cell Fate During Tissue Regeneration, Jesse Stephen Swyer Novak
Serine Metabolism Leverages The Integrated Stress Response To Direct Stem Cell Fate During Tissue Regeneration, Jesse Stephen Swyer Novak
Student Theses and Dissertations
Epidermal stem cells constantly rejuvenate the skin's barrier, which excludes harmful microbes and prevents dehydration. While hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs) normally regenerate hair, they must also reconstruct and thereafter maintain the overlying epidermis upon a barrier breach, such as a wound. How these fate choices are balanced to restore physiologic function to damaged tissue remains poorly understood. Here, I uncover the non-essential amino acid serine as a surprising regulator in this process. Utilizing dietary intervention and HFSC-specific loss-of-function studies, I demonstrate that under serine-depleted conditions HFSCs delay hair growth. Upon injury, serine-restricted HFSCs skew their fate towards epidermal re-epithelialization …
Molecular And Cellular Mechanisms Of Lim Protein Mechanotransduction, Donovan Yong Zhi Phua
Molecular And Cellular Mechanisms Of Lim Protein Mechanotransduction, Donovan Yong Zhi Phua
Student Theses and Dissertations
For tissues to develop and maintain mechanical homeostasis, cells must be able to perceive and respond to mechanical cues in their local environments (mechanosense). While there has been significant progress in understanding the physiological significance of mechanosensation, the mechanisms by which proteins convert mechanical stimuli into biochemical signals (mechanotransduction) are poorly understood. The actin cytoskeleton serves as a nexus for cellular mechanotransduction, generating and transducing forces into intracellular signals that coordinate cell migration, cellular contractility, organelle dynamics, and gene expression. However, our understanding of the molecular mechanisms by which cytoskeletal mechanotransduction is achieved is limited. LIM domain proteins are a …

JTRP Technical Reports
Roadway design plays a crucial role in traffic safety, particularly on rural roads. This research investigates the safety effectiveness of shoulder width on Indiana’s rural two-lane highways, and to use this understanding to provide a basis for more effective shoulder improvement programs. Although previous studies have established the benefits of shoulder widening in other states, limited research has been conducted in Indiana conditions. This research aims to evaluate the safety effectiveness of shoulders on rural roads in Indiana and to propose a practical and systemic approach to identifying road segments that require additional attention and possible need for shoulder improvements. …

Emboldened In The Rap “Game”: How Severely Stigmatized Video Models Navigate Disrespect And Vulnerability To Workplace Mistreatment., Payal Sharma, Kristie M. Rogers, Blake E. Ashforth
Management Faculty Research and Publications
Moral stigma attached to an occupation can scar workers through discrediting, shaming, and denying respect. It can also open the door to interpersonal mistreatment, but little is known about how morally stigmatized workers navigate anticipated disrespect to potentially avoid harm. We explore this issue in a study of an occupation carrying severe moral stigma and where disrespect and workplace mistreatment are pervasive: models in hip-hop and rap music videos. Through analyses of 71 interviews with 48 video models and 19 industry informants, field observations, and archival data, we show how severe moral stigma and industry constraints promote generalized disrespect of …
