Assessment And Management Of Dectes Stem Borer, Dectes Texanus Leconte, In South Dakota Soybeans, Zachary Loomis
Assessment And Management Of Dectes Stem Borer, Dectes Texanus Leconte, In South Dakota Soybeans, Zachary Loomis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Dectes stem borer (Dectes texanus LeConte, Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) has emerged as an increasingly significant pest of soybean (Glycine max) in South Dakota. Although historically considered a minor concern, rising populations of this insect have led to significant preharvest lodging and subsequent yield loss in affected fields. The Dectes stem borer's larval feeding within the soybean stem interferes with nutrient flow, and as the season progresses, this internal feeding weakens stem integrity, amplifying lodging risks and causing considerable challenges for farmers and researchers. Since 2017, both the number and severity of Dectes stem borer infestations have been on the rise …

Innovative Approaches To Enhancing The Functional Properties Of Dairy Products: Evaluating Water Hydration Effects On Fat-Free Mozzarella Baking Performance And Impact Of Hyaluronic Acid On The Functional Properties Of Milk, Suresh Ganpatbhai Sutariya
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, the dairy sector has experienced a significant rise in the healthy eating trend, with consumers increasingly seeking products that are fat-free, free from added sugars, and high in protein. Additionally, specialized health dairy items enriched with functional ingredients such as probiotics, prebiotics, and bioactive peptides are gaining traction for their added health benefits. This dissertation covers three studies in two domains: the first on water hydration's impact on fat-free mozzarella baking, and the second on the influence of hyaluronic acid, and its combination with kappa-carrageenan, on the physical properties of milk. One such product, Fat-free mozzarella is …

Occasional Papers of the Museum of Natural Science, Louisiana State University
Kalimantan comprises nearly three quarters of the island of Borneo and is the place where scientific study of Bornean birds began. We describe the history of bird research in Kalimantan from its beginning, highlighting the ornithologists who explored the region and how their interests and methods changed over time, from a concentration on specimen collection, to examinations of community ecology, to conservation in the face of habitat change and species depletion, to the latest investigations using satellite, genetic, and digital technology. We also highlight some future directions for research, especially the need for more work on basic ecology and biogeography. …

Variation in gene tree estimates is widely observed in empirical phylogenomic data and is often assumed to be the result of biological processes. However, a recent study using tetrapod mitochondrial genomes to control for biological sources of variation due to their haploid, uniparentally inherited, and non-recombining nature found that levels of discordance among mitochondrial gene trees were comparable to those found in studies that assume only biological sources of variation. Additionally, they found that several of the models of sequence evolution chosen to infer gene trees were doing an inadequate job of fitting the sequence data. These results indicated that …

Bioagricorridors: Uban Ecosystem Networks To Enhance Biological Diversity, Ecosystem Services And Food Production In Barcelona, Spain, Fabio Capra-Ribeiro, Filippo Vegezzi
Faculty Publications
Urbanisation and environmental degradation pose significant challenges to biodiversity, ecosystem services, and food pro- duction. The Bioagricorridors strategy addresses this by inte- grating agroecology in the urban environment, emphasising the continuity principle to connect diverse ecosystems through green infrastructure. Employing a mapping strategy, bioagricorridors bridge theory and space, using maps as communication tools and deep mapping to explore multi-layered, digital cartographic representations. This approach aids in addressing pressing urban conditions, enhancing genetic diversity, and improving soil and water quality. The exploration uses Barcelona as a case study, a city marked by historical urban planning shifts and landscape fragmentation. Taking into …

Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) are stable free radicals formed on particulate matter (PM) through processes such as combustion and pyrolysis. These free radicals are generated on transition metal oxide surfaces in the presence of aromatic precursors. Exposure to EPFRs occurs primarily via inhalation of PM deriving from combustion, traffic, industrial activities, and both indoor and outdoor burning. Other environmental factors that might generate EPFRs are radon, electronic and tobacco cigarettes. EPFRs exhibit unexpectedly long half-lives, ranging from several weeks to, in some cases, several years. EPFRs may be carbon-centered, oxygen-centered or mixed, identified by g-values exhibited in electron paramagnetic …

We examined global records of accessible natural history voucher collections (with publicly available data and reliable locality data) for terrestrial and freshwater vascular plants, fungi, freshwater fishes, birds, mammals, and herpetofauna (amphibians and reptiles) and highlight areas of the world that would be considered undersampled and sometimes called ‘unexplored’ (i.e., have relatively low, or no evidence of, past sampling efforts) under typical Western-scientific descriptions. We also question what ‘unexplored’ may mean in these contexts and explain how replacing the term in favor of more nuanced phrasing (e.g., ‘biodiversity blindspots,’ which emphasizes the lack of publicly available data about specimens) can …

Adaptation For Whom? Understanding The Impacts Of Dyke Policies On Small-Scale Farmers In Ca Mau Province Of Vietnam, Nguyen Minh Quang, Nguyen Van Minh, Nguyen Vo Chau Ngan, Martha B. Lerski
Publications and Research
Low-lying deltas worldwide are extremely vulnerable to sea-level rise. As the risks of climate-induced flooding become increasingly clear, the thirst for infrastructure-driven adaptation increases. This highlights a patent need to understand the impacts of engineering adaptation solutions, especially those targeting built structures such as dykes and sluices, on farmers from a bottom-up, farmer-centred perspective. The study addresses this call by examining cases where dyke policies, while successful in some dimensions, have undermined small-scale farmer livelihoods in Ca Mau ― Vietnam’s southernmost rural province. It identifies areas in need of attention and adds empirical data related to this group of farmers. …

Review Of The Land Of Open Graves: Living And Dying On The Migrant Trail, Maggie M. Klemm
Nebraska Anthropologist
The Land of Open Graves: Living and Dying on the Migrant Trail (2015), authored by Jason De León, is a crucial and important read which examines the United States’ contemporary immigration policy. The federal government program, Prevention through Deterrence, aims to prevent illegal immigration through expanding border enforcement. Instead of deterring people, this program pushes them to the hostile terrain of the Sonoran Desert. The author of this text argues that the desert is utilized as a tool of border enforcement as it perpetrates violence to those who attempt to cross the border, as well as their loved ones. …

Nebraska Anthropologist
Jason De León’s The Land of Open Graves: Living and Dying on the Migrant Trailis (2015), a raw and unwavering multidisciplinary exploration of the human cost of United States border policies, and this review reflects on his ability to meld ethnography, archaeology, forensic science, and narrative. De León exposes the brutal realities of the Sonoran Desert, where the U.S. policy of Prevention Through Deterrence (PTD) turns the landscape itself into a weapon. PTD directs illegal immigration away from more populated areas and instead towards the harsh deserts found occupying the border. De León holds a commitment to honoring the …

From Cigarettes To Cereal: Analyzing The Rise, Peak, And Fall Of Ultra-Processed Foods And The Legal Battle Against Industry Food Deception, Charlotte F. Baird
SMU Science and Technology Law Review
This Comment explores the legal, regulatory, and public health dimensions of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) in the United States and abroad, revealing the urgent need for comprehensive reform. It traces the historical evolution of UPFs, exposing how Big Tobacco strategically pivoted into the food industry after facing public backlash and regulatory crackdowns with cigarettes and tobacco products. Using the same research tactics, behavioral manipulation, and aggressive marketing practices once employed to sell cigarettes, Big Tobacco companies repurposed their corporate expertise to engineer food designed for potential addiction, overconsumption, and profit, while often targeting children and marginalized communities. This Comment critically examines …

A Review Of The Summer Treatment Program (Stp) For Youth With Callous-Unemotional (Cu) Traits: Moving Past The “Untreatable” Hypothesis, Daniel A. Waschbusch, Pevitr S. Bansal, Michael T. Willoughby
Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Youth with both callous-unemotional (CU) traits and conduct problems (CP) present a significant challenge for treatment due to their disruptive and aggressive behaviors. While traditional interventions often show significant but insufficiently positive effects, the Summer Treatment Program (STP), an intensive behavior therapy program, has shown promise in addressing these challenges. This review examines the existing research on the STP’s effectiveness for youth with CP and CU (CPCU), highlighting its potential to improve behavioral outcomes and treatment response. However, limitations such as small sample sizes, lack of long-term follow-up, and potential iatrogenic effects are also acknowledged. The review then proposes several …

Disentangling The Association Between Cognitive Flexibility And Anxiety In Autistic Youth: Real-World Flexibility Versus Performance-Based Task Switching, Farah Mahmud, Erin Kang, Rachel G. Mcdonald, Drew Wallace, Carrie Masia Warner
Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Introduction: Anxiety symptoms are highly prevalent among autistic youth yet remain under-recognized and undertreated, in part, due to a limited conceptual understanding of autistic cognition. Emerging evidence suggests that autistic differences in cognitive flexibility (CF) may be associated with a greater likelihood of developing and maintaining anxiety symptoms, relative to non-autistic youth. However, further work is needed to elucidate mechanisms of anxiety vulnerability that could inform potential targets for anxiety treatment in autistic youth. The current study aims to examine the associations between CF and anxiety in this population. Given the complexity of CF as a multifaceted construct, we used …
The Court’S Haphazard Reasoning On The Separation Of Powers, Steven D. Schwinn
The Court’S Haphazard Reasoning On The Separation Of Powers, Steven D. Schwinn
Saint Louis University Law Journal
The Supreme Court in recent years has taken a sharp and decisive turn toward originalism in cases touching on individual rights. Say what you will about the Court’s originalism in individual-rights cases (and there’s much to say), at least it’s an approach. We can’t even say that much about the Court’s treatment of cases touching on the separation of powers.
In short, the Court’s separation-of-powers opinions are a mess. They lack any consistent methodology or any coherent theory across cases. If five or six justices agree on the result in any given case, it seems, the explanation and reasoning are …

Muslim American Workers, Faith And Labor Organizing, Chaumtoli Huq
Saint Louis University Law Journal
Islam is one of the fastest-growing religions in the U.S. Muslim-Americans are racially, ethnically and theologically diverse and are a politically engaged constituency. It is a community experiencing immense economic insecurity alongside political vulnerability due to discrimination, which make them inclined to labor organizing. Despite these demographic changes, the U.S. labor movement is not addressing this growing faith-based community. In this article, I discuss three examples of successful labor organizing interventions led by Muslim-American workers or where Muslim-Americans were actively engaged which have resulted in positive gains for all workers. They are: (1) New York Taxi Workers Alliance (NYTWA) Post …
Kill ‘Em With Lies: The False Narrative Of The American Execution Laboratory, Danica Howell
Kill ‘Em With Lies: The False Narrative Of The American Execution Laboratory, Danica Howell
Saint Louis University Law Journal
The Supreme Court’s narrative regarding capital punishment, in keeping with the laboratories of democracy theory, boasts the consistent development of more humane methods of execution. Contrary to the Court’s narrative, however, states are not driven by the desire to create humane execution; they are merely striving to keep state-sanctioned killing alive. Examination reveals that execution methods are adopted on best guess and are retained without post-adoption verification of their effectiveness, humanity or painlessness. As abolitionist ideals close in on capital punishment, legislative shortcuts, willful ignorance, and secrecy allow new methods to propagate. As those tactics begin to fail, states resort …

Biology
Oligodendrocyte progenitor cells differentiate into oligodendrocytes, which myelinate axons during development and following demyelinating injury. However, the mechanisms that drive the timing and specificity of developmental myelination are not well understood. We hypothesized that oligodendrocyte progenitor cell proliferation and differentiation would be affected by pathological neuronal activity during adolescent development when developmental myelination is occurring and that this would also impact neuron-to-oligodendrocyte progenitor cell connectivity and myelination. We used kainic acid to induce a seizure in mice, treating equal numbers of males and females, in sample sizes of at least five animals. We found that the seizures led to increased …

The Effects Of Capsaicin On Vascularization In Patients With Diabetes Mellitus: A Literature Review, Karen Hernandez, Leslie Guerrero, Myra Mudassar, Amanda L. Killeen
School of Podiatric Medicine Publications
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder affecting 11.6% of the United States population and 43.95% of the population in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. A common complication of diabetes mellitus is neuropathy, a type of nerve damage that affects as many as half of the people with this condition. Vascular factors and metabolic interactions are major influencers of the pathogenesis of diabetic neuropathy. This literature review evaluates the therapeutic role of capsaicin, a known component of capsicum pepper, commonly used as a treatment for neuropathic pain. However, several studies show that in addition to pain management, capsaicin counters …

The sensory drive hypothesis proposes that signals evolve to be most effective in their respective environment, and that the receiver’s sensory systems in that environment should evolve to match those signals. Differences in sexual signals and sensory systems in adjacent habitats may operate as isolating mechanisms. Male Anolis lizards have brightly colored dewlaps that they use for communication. Anolis aquaticus, a Costa Rican species that exhibits intraspecific variation, was studied as populations’ dewlaps vary in redness or yellowness. It is hypothesized that this variation is shaped by sensory drive and facilitates species isolation in A. aquaticus. Visual modeling was used …
The Consumption Of Women And Animals: A More Effective Way To Combat Fragile Masculinity When We Protest, Ling Fei Liu
The Consumption Of Women And Animals: A More Effective Way To Combat Fragile Masculinity When We Protest, Ling Fei Liu
Research Days Posters 2025
The normalized sexualization of meat by corporate advertisements has led to the dehumanization of women, mental interchangeability of women and meat, and the solidification of traditional (and toxic) ideas of masculinity and femininity. Examining this connection may help create breakthroughs in effective communication strategies to achieve women’s and animal rights, and help men realize climate change isn’t only a “feminine” problem. In this study, the effectiveness of language and methods of protest used by women’s rights activists will be analyzed by looking at social responses to protests from each movement. Since these movements challenge ideals of toxic masculinity, understanding what …
