Navigating Wastewater: Minnesota Mining Wastewater Permit Challenges And Evolving Compliance Standards, Madelaine Adamich

Journal of Earth and Life Science

February of 2021 marked the beginning of Minnesota clearly establishing that groundwater qualifies as a Class 1 water in a legal battle involving United States Steel, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, WaterLegacy, Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, the Minnesota Court of Appeals, and eventually the Minnesota Supreme Court (MNSC). Minnesota has a water classification system, as required by the federal Clean Water Act, with 7 classes of use. Class 1 waters are waters used for domestic consumption (MPCA 4, n.d.). According to Minnesota Statute § 7050.0220, the acceptable level for sulfate is 250 mg/L in Class 1 …

Aquatic Invertebrate Populations In Roadside Wetlands In Relation To Water Characteristics, Ellen P. Isakson Jan 2025

Aquatic Invertebrate Populations In Roadside Wetlands In Relation To Water Characteristics, Ellen P. Isakson

Journal of Earth and Life Science

The continual habitat destruction and draining of wetland systems makes the need to understand the ecology of roadside wetlands all the more necessary. Roadside wetlands provide valuable habitat to countless aquatic invertebrates, which can provide insight into the health of the wetland system due to their diversity. The objective of this study was to analyze the populations of aquatic invertebrates in roadside wetlands in relation to water characteristics such as pH, salinity, conductivity, water depth and temperature, and dissolved oxygen. This was done by collecting samples of invertebrate populations from roadside wetlands, in addition to data on water quality characteristics …

Predictors Of Dietary Meat Reduction In Gen Z College Students: A Cross-Sectional Survey Using The Com-B Model, Deanne Moosman Jan 2025

Predictors Of Dietary Meat Reduction In Gen Z College Students: A Cross-Sectional Survey Using The Com-B Model, Deanne Moosman

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Overconsumption of meat negatively impacts human and environmental health, and these challenges are expected to worsen due to global population growth and increasing meat consumption. Many consumers appear unwilling to reduce their meat intake, and this resistance to dietary change is more common among adult men than women. However, data about meat-eating attitudes and behaviors are lacking for younger generational cohorts. Generation Z (i.e., those born between 1995 and 2010; Gen Z) is a growing consumer group whose dietary decisions will have environmental and human health consequences. Little is known about Gen Z's meat consumption habits and behaviors and whether …

Complete High Thoracic Spinal Cord Injury Causes Bowel Dysfunction In Mice, Olivia Wireman, Ellie L. Sams, Lynnet E. Richey, Gabrielle V. Hammers, Andrew N. Stewart, William M. Bailey, Samir P. Patel, John C. Gensel

Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Center Faculty Publications

Bowel dysfunction, is a prevalent and life-impacting comorbidity of spinal cord injury (SCI) with no long-term treatment available. SCI-induced colon changes including motility and fibrosis are understudied as are strategies to address SCI bowel dysfunction. This need remains partly due to the lack of a mouse model that recapitulates the human condition. We hypothesized that a high thoracic spinal transection in mice would trigger bowel dysfunction with coincident colon pathology similar to humans and rats after SCI. We observed bowel dysfunction as increased fecal pellet numbers within the colon, smaller pellet size, and decreased motility. Fecal pellets numbers in the …

Applied Environmental Research

Managing waste with grease traps poses a challenge because of the potential environmental issues associated with its disposal. In this study, two approaches were investigated to increase the biodegradability of grease trap waste: 1) converting raw grease trap waste into soap and 2) supplementing grease trap soap as inoculum with calcium material. The preparation of grease trap soap was optimized to attain a soap yield of 103% by utilizing a water-to-ethanol ratio of 9:1 at 80 °C for a processing time of 3 hours. A comparison of the composting results revealed higher nitrate yields with increased ratios of grease trap …

Examining Short Term Drainage Impacts To Soil Health In Hydric And Non-Hydric Soils Of Waseca County, Minnesota, Ely Hartl

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Subsurface drainage is implemented throughout the Midwest United States to remove excess moisture from soil to enhance crop growth. Hydric soils are ubiquitous throughout Minnesota and are commonly drained due to their historically saturated conditions. Changing a soil's hydrology can impact its formation and properties. The alteration of physical, biological, and chemical soil properties can occur to both hydric and non-hydric soils, impacting overall soil health. The purpose of this study is to examine the short-term effects of tile drainage on the soil health of hydric and non-hydric soils in southern Minnesota. Research methods include: 1) collect soil-sediment cores to …

Elucidating The Non-Shivering Thermogenesis Response In The Black-Capped Chickadee (Poecile Atricapillus), Sweta Chand Jan 2025

Elucidating The Non-Shivering Thermogenesis Response In The Black-Capped Chickadee (Poecile Atricapillus), Sweta Chand

Dissertations and Theses

The adaptation of small birds to cold environments involves mechanisms for both heat conservation and heat generation. While minimizing heat loss reduces the energy needed to maintain body temperature, thermogenesis remains essential. Shivering and non-shivering thermogenesis (NST) are two likely mechanisms supporting cold adaptation in small avian species. Although sarcolipin (SLN) aids NST in small mammals, studies in birds such as Dark- eyed Juncos have shown no increase or even a decrease in SLN expression during cold exposure, suggesting limited involvement. This may reflect biological differences or limitations of mRNA- focused sequencing, which excludes long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) capable of …

Digital technology plays an increasing role in Chinese medicine and Western modalities alike. This research uses content analysis and grounded theory for developing a conceptual framework for a digital health system in the Western world termed Digital Chinese Medicine (DCM). Four research questions were proposed: • What are the functional requirements of a DCM system? • What inputs, processes, and outputs are necessary for a DCM system to be both effective and efficient? • What components and features are most desired in a DCM system? • What will a graphical representation of a DCM system look like? Over 475 publications …

An Eye For An Eye Makes A Vigilant Society, Liam C. Preyer Jan 2025

An Eye For An Eye Makes A Vigilant Society, Liam C. Preyer

Capstone Showcase

Vigilantism is one of the oldest practices of mankind; for as long as there have been moral and legal laws to govern us and live by, there have been individuals who have sought justice outside these systems. Vigilantism is the response to failures in the justice system, and in the United States in particular, we have seen examples from the Western Frontier to the modern-day digital landscape. This paper will explore the nature of vigilante justice through historical, psychological, media-driven, legal, and digital lenses. We will explore how cultural narratives, media influences, government actions, and psychological motivations have shaped the …

The Gift Of Exit Financing, Robert W. Miller Jan 2025

The Gift Of Exit Financing, Robert W. Miller

Faculty Publications

Aggressive liability management exercises have spilled over into bankruptcy court and exit financing is often the prize in the center of the arena. Debtors no longer rely upon gifting, the traditional strategy for buying plan support. Instead, they can replicate gifting's benefits in a more defensible package by funneling discounted subscription rights to chosen constituencies as part of exit financing.

Recognizing exit financing's distortive power, courts responded by evaluating the quality of negotiations and reviewing precedent transactions. Meanwhile, commentators suggest heightened monitoring and informal guardrails. All of these approaches ignore the shortcomings of judicial valuation. Market testing is the only …

Rasa3 Identified As A Potential Effector Of The Brain G Protein G⍺o By Mass Spectrometry, Halie Adesin Bell Jan 2025

Rasa3 Identified As A Potential Effector Of The Brain G Protein G⍺o By Mass Spectrometry, Halie Adesin Bell

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

G⍺o, the alpha subunit of the most abundant heterotrimeric G protein in the brain, mediates signaling by opioids and by many neuromodulators to inhibit neural function. An open question is whether activated G⍺o-GTP directly binds to and regulates effector molecules, like all other animal G⍺ proteins, or if it signals solely by releasing Gβ subunits. Using mouse brain lysates as native source of G⍺o and its potential effectors, I analyzed immunopurified G⍺o protein complexes by mass spectrometry. I identified several proteins that interact preferentially with inactive or active G⍺o. I focused my analysis on proteins that are significantly upregulated in …

My Favorite Florida Place: The Giant Ground Sloth Of Clam Bayou, Amanda Hagood Jan 2025

My Favorite Florida Place: The Giant Ground Sloth Of Clam Bayou, Amanda Hagood

Florida Geographer

I first heard about the Clam Bayou Giant Ground Sloth from a local fisherman in Gulfport, FL. It was a warm spring day, and I had taken my infant son for a stroll through Clam Bayou Nature Park, a quiet spot on the eastern fringe of our little Gulf Coast town. While we paused to watch this seasoned angler cleaning his catch, he spun out three or four tales, every now and then tossing a spare fishy bit to the herons assembled eagerly around the DO NOT FEED WILDLIFE sign. Each yarn was gnarlier than the last, but the story …

The Effect Of Inclusive Leadership By Pastoral Leaders On Catholic Parish Vitality, Matthew F. Manion Jan 2025

The Effect Of Inclusive Leadership By Pastoral Leaders On Catholic Parish Vitality, Matthew F. Manion

Dissertations

Catholic parish life in the United States has passed the point of decline where minor changes will enable it to grow again. Church leaders need a new missionary culture and outward-focused approaches to reach people today with the timeless truths of the faith. The old mindset of putting all the responsibility on the shoulders of the clergy to solve problems no longer works. Since heterogeneous groups make better decisions than homogeneous groups in complex, adaptive situations, this study explores the hypothesis that inclusive leadership by Catholic parish leaders leads to more innovation and better solutions to the challenges of church …

Ubuntu In Namibia And Kenya: How Emerging Adults Live An Essential African Value Today, Julia S. Rotzinger, Lene Arnett Jensen, Amber Gayle Thalmeyer Jan 2025

Ubuntu In Namibia And Kenya: How Emerging Adults Live An Essential African Value Today, Julia S. Rotzinger, Lene Arnett Jensen, Amber Gayle Thalmeyer

Psychology

Psychology in Africa often relies on Euro-American theories, despite their limitations in African cultures. Here, a shift to an Afrocentric perspective was made by exploring Ubuntu in two sub-Saharan African countries using a cultural-developmental psychology approach for in-depth emic understanding. Ubuntu (also known as botho, etc.) is a moral ideal that at core means placing a higher importance on the community than on oneself. Most literature on this important African concept has been theoretical rather than empirical, and little is known about how well it describes contemporary worldviews and experiences of emerging adults. In this interview study, Namibian and …

Life Cycle Assessment Approach For Trenchless Cured-In-Place Pipe Sewer Renewal Method, Shiva Mandari Jan 2025

Life Cycle Assessment Approach For Trenchless Cured-In-Place Pipe Sewer Renewal Method, Shiva Mandari

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

The advancement of underground infrastructure is vital to the development of modern society and continues to inspire technological progress. As environmental concerns grow, innovative approaches to pipeline rehabilitation are increasingly emphasizing sustainability. Assessing and contrasting the environmental effects of renewing existing pipelines versus complete replacement is key to fostering eco-conscious improvements in subsurface utility systems. Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) is a commonly used trenchless method for rehabilitating pipelines. It involves inserting a flexible liner, saturated with resin, into the existing pipe. This insertion can be achieved through inversion using air or water pressure, or by mechanically pulling and inflating the liner. …

Hayek And Tawney: A Forgotten Conversation On Economics And Christian Ethics, Roger J. Newell Jan 2025

Hayek And Tawney: A Forgotten Conversation On Economics And Christian Ethics, Roger J. Newell

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

The dramatic British election of 1945 and an unlikely best-seller on economic philosophy provides the setting for a respectful conversation, rather than an acrimonious debate, between two long-time colleagues of the London School of Economics, the economic theorist F.A. Hayek and the economic historian R.H. Tawney. Their dialogue highlights divergent approaches to key moral issues embedded in economic thought, including the nature of freedom, the role of the state, and the reasons for poverty. The article examines the way in which Christianity underpins Tawney's approach to these questions and how, for Hayek, a network of secular beliefs performs a parallel …

Review Of Steven Nemes, Theological Authority In The Church: Reconsidering Traditionalism And Hierarchy, Isaac Choi Jan 2025

Review Of Steven Nemes, Theological Authority In The Church: Reconsidering Traditionalism And Hierarchy, Isaac Choi

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Nemes correctly identifies the key difference between Protestantism and its Catholic and Orthodox siblings as not being about justification, transubstantiation, or the Marian dogmas, but as rooted in the question of theological authority: are there individuals or groups in the church who have “the standing to tell other persons (not) to do or believe something for the sake of friendship with God” (xiii)? Nemes’s contention is that only God has such authority, and he makes the case for this claim in this book primarily by appealing to the teachings of Jesus and the apostles. The analysis of the New Testament …
