Social connections within primate groups are continuously changing, and an individual's connectedness within their social network can have important consequences on morbidity and mortality. Here, we examined the effects of early life social experiences and age on social connectedness of captive female olive baboons (Papio anubis). Subjects included 54 mother-reared (MR) and 35 nursery-reared (NR) baboons (4.03 to 19.8 years of age). We conducted four 15-min focal observations and recorded all social interactions. For every possible dyad, we calculated total amount of time in proximity to one another and total amount of time spent grooming (in each direction), then used …

Beef production is an important component of the world’s food supply, with production being near 59 million tons in 2023 (USDA, 2023). Enhancing our understanding of the factors influencing metabolism will lead to improvements in production efficiency. Using RNA-seq and WGCNA of longissimus muscle samples, gene expression and metabolic pathway analyses were performed to examine relationships with ultrasound and body mass variables. In this study, body weight (BW), ultrasound back fat (BF), ultrasound muscle depth (MD), and body condition score (BCS) were traits recorded for 18 cull beef cows. As expected, all production-related traits monitored (WT, BF, MD, and BCS) …

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) represents a severe and complex subtype of major depressive disorder (MDD), affecting approximately 30% of patients who fail to respond adequately to multiple standard antidepressant therapies. While the pathophysiology of TRD remains incompletely understood, emerging evidence suggests that sex-based biological differences might influence its onset, progression, and treatment response. Women are disproportionately affected by depression and are more likely to experience residual symptoms and treatment resistance, potentially due to hormonal fluctuations, immune system differences, and variations in brain circuitry and neuroplasticity. This narrative explores the current literature on the mechanisms underlying TRD, with a particular emphasis on …

Vascular remodeling is a complex process involving the coordinated actions of multiple cellular signaling pathways in various cell types, leading to structural and functional changes in blood vessels. These changes can be adaptive, as in wound healing, or maladaptive, as seen in chronic vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, and retinopathy. Exchange proteins directly activated by cAMP (EPACs) are key players in cAMP-mediated cell signaling, distinct from the more traditionally studied protein kinase A pathway. EPAC proteins are guanine nucleotide exchange factors for the small G proteins Rap1 and Rap2. Recent studies have also revealed noncanonical functions of EPAC1 involving …

Topologically associating domains (TADs) and chromatin architectural loops impact promoter-enhancer interactions, with CCCTC-binding factor (CTCF) defining TAD borders and loop anchors. TAD boundaries and loops progressively strengthen upon embryonic stem (ES) cell differentiation, underscoring the importance of chromatin topology in ontogeny. However, the mechanisms driving this process remain unclear. Here we show a widespread increase in CTCF-RNA-binding protein (RBP) interactions upon ES to neural stem (NS) cell differentiation. While dispensable in ES cells, RBPs reinforce CTCF-anchored chromatin topology in NS cells. We identify Pantr1, a non-coding RNA, as a key facilitator of CTCF-RBP interactions, promoting chromatin maturation. Using acute CTCF …

Candida albicans, an opportunistic fungal pathogen, causes systemic and superficial infections, especially in immunocompromised patients. Treatment of fungal infections is complicated by limited antifungal options and the development of drug resistance. Previous work from our group demonstrated the efficacy of the anti-virulence peptide EntV and shorter variants against C. albicans infection in various animal models, including mouse models of oropharyngeal candidiasis and disseminated infection and a rat venous catheter model. However, the mechanism of action, which abrogates fungal virulence without fungicidal or fungistatic activity, has remained unknown. We used a combination of cell biological, biochemical, genomic, and genetic approaches to …

Childhood cancer incidence has steadily risen both in the United States and worldwide, yet its environmental contributors remain underrecognized in clinical care. Children and cancer survivors are particularly susceptible to environmental exposures due to their unique physiology and the long-term health vulnerabilities that follow cancer treatment. Although exposures to substances such as pesticides, air pollution, and household chemicals are linked to increased cancer risk, limited clinical frameworks and clinician training leave oncologists underprepared to address growing environmental health concerns from families. A holistic pediatric oncology environmental health program in Murcia, Spain offers a scalable vision for embedding the environment into …

Introduction: Military-dependent young adults (17-25 years old) with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) face significant barriers to accessing services during their transition to adulthood. Frequent relocations, disrupted care, and limited ASD-tailored interventions exacerbate the challenges for these families, with many young adults experiencing a "service cliff" as they age out of pediatric care and school-based services. Addressing these gaps is critical, particularly given the rising mental health challenges and executive dysfunction in this population. This study evaluates the preliminary efficacy of an adapted telehealth intervention, the Military-Launching! program, designed to support young adults with ASD and their military families.

Polydrug abuse is the persistent self-administration of more than one reinforcing drug. The present study provided rhesus monkeys concurrent access to two drugs: 8% alcohol and solutions of either cocaine or methadone. The liquids were available under concurrent nonindependent fixed-ratio (FR) schedules across increasing and then decreasing ratio sizes. These schedules generate high rates of changeover responses and yield a dependent variable of responses per delivery that is not rigidly tied to the ratio-schedule value. The programmed schedule size was equal for both liquids and increased in the sequence 8, 16, 32, and so on until responding decreased, whereupon the …

Immunosuppressive myeloid cells are important in a variety of physiological and pathological contexts, including tumor development, but how hormones might regulate their activity is unclear. Secretogranins, a family of secretory proteins in endocrine and neuronal cells, are proposed to function as prohormones or hormones, but their specific receptors are unknown. Here we show that secretogranin 2 (SCG2), a granin family member, functionally interacts with leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor B4 (LILRB4) on monocytic cells. Tumor-derived SCG2 promotes tumor growth in myeloid-specific LILRB4 transgenic mice in a T cell-dependent manner, whereas SCG2 deficiency in host mice impairs tumor progression and reduces infiltration of …

Peripartum depression (PPD) represents a significant public health concern, affecting 10-17% of women globally. Traditional monoaminergic treatments demonstrate limited efficacy and delayed onset of action. The glutamate-GABA imbalance hypothesis provides a novel theoretical framework for understanding depression pathophysiology and developing targeted therapeutic interventions. This review examines emerging pharmacotherapeutic approaches targeting glutamatergic and GABAergic neurotransmitter systems for PPD treatment. Search criteria targeted randomized clinical trials investigating GABA-A-positive allosteric modulators (brexanolone, zuranolone, and ganaxolone) and NMDA receptor antagonists (ketamine and esketamine) in PPD patients. Brexanolone was the first neurosteroid to receive FDA approval for PPD, while zuranolone also shows promise. Ketamine and …

Recent studies have highlighted the pivotal role of the cGAS‐STING pathway in cancer immunotherapy. However, clinical trials with cGAS‐STING pathway agonists have faced setbacks thanks to their short biological half‐life, lack of tumor specificity, and potential to promote tumor immune evasion. To address these challenges, a novel exosome‐based drug delivery platform, termed cmExoaCD11b is developed, designed to precisely target and reprogram the tumor microenvironment (TME) in situ for pancreatic cancer immunotherapy. cmExoaCD11b is engineered to encapsulate high copy numbers of IL‐12 mRNA and 2′3’‐cGAMP (cGAMP) and is functionalized with CD11b antibodies for targeted delivery to macrophages. Notably, cmExoaCD11b facilitated the …

Tissue Engineered Combinatorial Therapeutics For Spinal Cord Injury Repair, Inha Baek
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) lead to temporary or permanent sensorimotor deficit due to the complex and multifaceted features of the injury site, making the treatments ineffective. Recent research emphasizes the potential of combinatorial therapeutics approaches combining different therapeutics, such as biomaterials and stem cell transplantation. In this context, nerve composite hydrogels, fabricated from decellularized sciatic nerve (dSN) and spinal cord (dSC) extracellular matrices (ECM), might be promising platforms due to their biocompatibility and ability to mimic native microenvironments. In this study, we developed and characterized nerve mimetic composite hydrogels embedded with human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs) and investigated their …

Parental separation during childhood leads to long-lasting psychological and socioemotional impact on the lives of emerging adults as they transition into higher education. The long-term effects of childhood parental separation on college students' academic performance, physical health, and overall mental wellbeing are well-documented. However, students can develop resilience to cope with challenging family and life experiences and even demonstrate post-traumatic growth. Post-traumatic growth refers to the positive changes and experiences college students discover after enduring life disruptions, such as being separated from their parents at an early age. To better understand the connection between parental separation and posttraumatic growth, a …

Harry Potter And The Queering Agenda*, Krisha K. Vania
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
The Marauders Era, a newfound sub-fandom of Harry Potter, focuses on a group of characters set years before the original series. This community has allowed for alternative ‘safe’ spaces for fans to ‘queer’ the source material and find personal and social leverage. A survey was conducted to research how queer-identifying fans build and maintain virtual communities using the Wizarding World and Harry Potter mythology. The data and subsequent analysis reinforced the creation and maintenance of a participatory community through the use of multiple entry points, fans acting as textual poachers, and a community offering its users a form of leverage. …

This study investigates whether the context in which a word is learnt affects noun and verb learning. There is mixed evidence in studies of noun learning, and no studies of background perceptual context in verb learning. Two-, three-, and four-year-olds (n = 162) saw a novel object moved in a novel way while hearing four novel words, either nouns or verbs. They were asked to generalize the word to a similar action or object shown in the same or different context. Results demonstrate that 2- and 3-year-olds were more accurate at test when learning nouns than verbs, demonstrating that verb …

The United Nations General Assembly called in September 2024 for the establishment of an independent panel for actionable evidence against antimicrobial resistance (IPEA). The task of designing the panel was given to the Quadripartite Joint Secretariat (QJS) on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) with a delivery timeline of 15 months. To promote stakeholder thought and input around what this panel should look like and how it should work, which could feed into the QJS’s consultation process, we independently commissioned seven papers to examine lessons that could be learned from other high-level scientific panels. We then called a convening of stakeholders that were …

Khaled Hosseini’S Judgment In The Kite Runner Towards Pashtun And Hazara Identities, Bilal Waziri, Dawod Mangal, Kamaldeen Kamal
Journal of Research Initiatives
This book review offers a compelling examination of Khaled Hosseini's portrayal of Pashtun and Hazara identities in his acclaimed novel, *The Kite Runner*. Through a literary-ethnographic lens, the research delves into how narrative techniques can construct, amplify, or distort ethnic representations, particularly within the tumultuous backdrop of Afghanistan. The novel is scrutinized for its stark depiction of Pashtuns as oppressors and Hazaras as perennial victims, which risks perpetuating a simplistic and problematic singular narrative. Employing a library-based qualitative approach, this paper thoughtfully interprets textual evidence within the rich sociocultural and historical landscape of Afghanistan. The findings reveal that while the …

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
In the past several years, the prevalence of AI has become undeniable. From AI features on Google to ChatGPT, AI is providing us with instant knowledge and answers. But what happens when AI enters the creative sphere? Specifically, what happens when AI is used to create music mimicking the style and voice of artists who already exist? Is this stealing? Can this be described as true, authentic art? This paper discusses difference instances of AI generated music (AIGM) in pop culture as well as the philosophical and legal implications in an attempt to further the discussion about the role of …
