Estimating The Energy Recovery Potential From Municipal Solid Waste In Ha’Il Region (Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia), Noureddine Elboughdiri, Muhammad Imran Khan, Takwa Missaoui
Yanbu Journal of Engineering and Science
In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), the need of an agile solid waste management (SWM) system is vital to control safely the rapid growth of its municipal solid waste (MSW) with minimal environment toll. Further, the domestic energy production in KSA is thriving and putting a tremendous pressure on its reserves of fossil oil. Waste-to-energy (WTE) plants provides an excellent opportunity, even if MSW mitigation and energy production are usually considered separately. Energy recovery (ER) from waste is not a new field of study; however, its implementation remains a challenge in KSA. Although there is abundance of useful waste …

Meme Generation Using Deep Neural Network To Engage Viewers On Social Media, Gasim Othamn Alandjani, Altaf Hussain Bouk
Yanbu Journal of Engineering and Science
In today’s technological era, most new generations are using memes because the phenomenon of memes is rapidly gaining in popularity. In addition, various modifications and parodies use social and cultural phenomena to transform an original idea into another. Virus memes are sometimes called virus scripts and are the most widespread on the Internet. However, there is little scientific evidence for this assumption. This paper presents an innovative method to generate memes using machine learning algorithms that match the users’ humorous and relevant captions. The VGG16 network is used to return the embedded image. We have collected feedback from citizens of …

Yanbu Journal of Engineering and Science
A movie poster image is one of the important media in the filmmaking process, providing valuable information about the movie, such as movie titles, characters, and genres. Identifying a movie genre from a poster can be a daunting task, as it can relate to multiple genres. To solve this problem, this paper uses a deep feedforward neural network to classify movie genres from movie poster images. In this regard, we used and trained a state-of-the-art InceptionV3 deep neural network. The network is trained on our dataset consisting of 36,423 movie poster images taken from the IMDB website, which is categorized …

Development Of An Optimal Path Planning Using Elite Opposition Based Bat Algorithm For A Mobile Robot, Zaharudeen Haruna, Muhammad B. Mu'azu Mu'azu, Prosper Oyibo, Salawuden A. Tijani
Yanbu Journal of Engineering and Science
This research work presents the development of an optimal path planning using elite opposition based bat algorithm (EOBA) for mobile robot, such that the robot avoids obstacle(s) without making contact with them. The bat algorithm (BA) is a nature. inspired meta-heuristic algorithm that works on the basis of the echolocation behavior of bat. It, however, has a poor exploration capability leading to it easily getting stuck in local optima. The EOBA is developed by modifying the BA with the elite opposition-based learning (EOBL) so as to diversify the solution search space and the inertial weight in order to balance its …

A Novel Bio-Coagulant Aid To Treat High Turbid Water Containing Humic Acids, Hossam Altaher, Tarek E. Khalil, Reda Abubeah
Yanbu Journal of Engineering and Science
In general, the production of potable water from raw water sources involves the coagulation or flocculation process to remove turbidity. Alum has been widely used as a coagulant; however, there is a concern about its associated risk of Alzheimer's disease. As a result, there has been considerable interest in the development of natural coagulants and coagulant aids in order to reduce the dose of alum. This study aimed at evaluating the use of Corchorus Olitorius L. (COL), a leafy vegetable grown in Africa and the Middle East, as a novel coagulant aid over other synthetic coagulant aids. It is a …

Tubulin Transforms Tau And Α-Synuclein Condensates From Pathological To Physiological, Lathan Lucas, Phoebe S Tsoi, My Diem Quan, Kyoung-Jae Choi, Josephine C Ferreon, Allan Chris M Ferreon
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Proteins phase-separate to form condensates that partition and concentrate biomolecules into membraneless compartments. These condensates can exhibit dichotomous behaviors in biology by supporting cellular physiology or instigating pathological protein aggregation 1–3 . Tau and α- synuclein (αSyn) are neuronal proteins that form heterotypic (Tau:αSyn) condensates associated with both physiological and pathological processes. Tau and αSyn functionally regulate microtubules 8–12 , but are also known to misfold and co-deposit in aggregates linked to various neurodegenerative diseases 4,5,6,7 , which highlights the paradoxically ambivalent effect of Tau:αSyn condensation in health and disease. Here, we show that tubulin modulates Tau:αSyn condensates by promoting …

“Hippo” Law Law And The Biodiversity Crisis Of Habitat Loss, Invasive Species, Pollution, Population, And Overharvesting, Andrew W. Torrance, Bill Tomlinson
UC Law SF International Law Review
This article explores the critical issue of biodiversity loss through the lens of the “HIPPO” acronym coined by Edward O. Wilson: Habitat loss, Invasive species, Pollution, Population, and Overharvesting. It examines the ecological and social ramifications of declining biodiversity and assesses existing legal frameworks aimed at mitigating these threats. Furthermore, the article proposes innovative legal mechanisms to address each HIPPO factor, offering a legal approach that spans many different domains. By integrating comparative legal analysis and suggesting forward-looking legal reforms, this work aims to contribute to the conservation efforts essential for sustaining biodiversity in the face of escalating environmental challenges.

Resistance, Adaptation, And Assimilation: Native American Responses To Christianization In The Great Lakes Region, 1800-1900, Noah S. Danforth
HS 390 Primary Research Papers
Analysis of the relationship between Native Americans and missionaries shifted from an early broad, sweeping praise of the missionaries, to overwhelming condemnation of their actions in the post Civil Rights political climate. Since the time of European contact, histories often fell into Hagiography; extolling the virtues of the missionaries, and their God-ordained work to save the soul of the perceived heathen Native. In the mind of many, the conversion of the Native was merely a natural result of the superiority of European-descended American culture. However, as a result of the Civil Rights Movement, a pivot away from lauditive analysis took …

Life, Liberty And Property: Property As A Weapon Utilized Against Native Peoples And As A Tool To Strengthen Native Sovereignty In The Upper Midwest, Jacob R A Ludwig
HS 390 Primary Research Papers
While many Americans today recognize the continuing paternalism of the federal government towards Tribal governments, much still remains unknown to the public regarding the specific laws, policies and treaties that have provided the continuing legal authority for this paternalism. Throughout American history, the relationship between the federal government and Native American tribes can be seen through the use of violence both in law, and outside of it. Treaties, the basis for removal, have been used by both the federal government and subsequently tribal governments to assert their authority over land. In the Upper Midwest, various Anishinaabe tribes signed several treaties …

Using Stable Isotope Analysis To Investigate The Trophic Ecology Of Aquatic Insects, Shelby Ann Medlock
Using Stable Isotope Analysis To Investigate The Trophic Ecology Of Aquatic Insects, Shelby Ann Medlock
Master's Theses
Despite their abundance on the landscape, ponds and associated macroinvertebrate assemblages have largely been underrepresented in scientific studies, which usually focus on lakes or streams. Similar to other waterbodies, ponds can harbor high levels of invertebrate biodiversity, which is important as aquatic insects are experiencing declines due to habitat destruction, pollution, climate change, and invasive species introductions. To evaluate how these threats impact pond insects and the ecosystem services they may provide, a thorough understanding of their ecology is essential. However, significant knowledge gaps remain, especially regarding trophic levels and species-specific diets. To address these knowledge gaps, I used carbon …

Background: Psychopathological symptoms appear important for cognitive functions in schizophrenia. Nevertheless, the factors and their impact on relationships between negative or disorganization symptoms and verbal fluency are still debatable. The preliminary objective of the study was to compare verbal fluency, including clustering and switching as cognitive strategies, executive functions, and processing speed between individuals with schizophrenia (SZ) and healthy controls (HC). The main aim of the study was to investigate mediation models and identify whether relationships between negative and disorganization symptoms and verbal fluency in schizophrenia are mediated by cognitive flexibility and processing speed. Methods: Semantic (animal and fruit) and …

Climate change could irreversibly modify Southern Ocean ecosystems. Marine ecosystem model (MEM) ensembles can assist policy making by projecting future changes and allowing the evaluation and assessment of alternative management approaches. However, projected changes in total consumer biomass from the Fisheries and Marine Ecosystem Model Intercomparison Project (FishMIP) global MEM ensemble highlight an uncertain future for the Southern Ocean, indicating the need for a region-specific ensemble. A large source of model uncertainty originates from the Earth system models used to force FishMIP models, particularly future changes to lower trophic level biomass and sea-ice coverage. To build confidence in regional MEMs …

Climate change is affecting ocean temperature, acidity, currents, and primary production, causing shifts in species distributions, marine ecosystems, and ultimately fisheries. Earth system models simulate climate change impacts on physical and biogeochemical properties of future oceans under varying emissions scenarios. Coupling these simulations with an ensemble of global marine ecosystem models has indicated broad decreases of fish biomass with warming. However, regional details of these impacts remain much more uncertain. Here, we employ CMIP5 and CMIP6 climate change impact projections using two Earth system models coupled with four regional and nine global marine ecosystem models in 10 ocean regions to …

Optimizing Action Jrpg Combat For A More Engaging Experience, Jeffer Ng
Computer Science and Software Engineering
The purpose of this project is to introduce a more engaging combat system for many JRPGs with real-time combat. Most games of this genre have similar combat systems, making it dull. Understandably, the game’s primary focus is world-building. As long as players feel immersed in the world, that is what makes a great RPG. However, combat is equally important to the immersion. Some JRPGs follow a similar combat script or style: a party of four, each with unique abilities and fighting styles, gets swapped based on the context to combo enemies and deal the maximum amount of damage. While it …
