Failing Through Play: Integrating Iterative Design Methods To Foster Creativity In Primary Education, Fernanda Fontes, Wonjoon Chung
Failing Through Play: Integrating Iterative Design Methods To Foster Creativity In Primary Education, Fernanda Fontes, Wonjoon Chung
IASDR Conference Series
Creativity is one of the essential skills to navigate the complexities of the 21st century. In this exploratory research, we investigate how design can enhance current pedagogical methods in primary education to foster creativity in problem-solving activities. Using a case study method, we conduct semi-structured interviews with educators to understand their approaches, motivations, and the barriers they face when employing these activities in their classrooms. We also verify the iterative methods currently incorporated into these activities. Our analysis suggests that crucial elements of the design creative process, such as iteration and problem-finding, are often overlooked. Furthermore, the concept of “iteration” …

From Screen To Street: Insights For Autonomous Mobility Design From Movies, Xinyan Yu, Tram Thi Minh Tran, Marius Hoggenmüller, Martin Tomitsch
IASDR Conference Series
Fictional media, such as movies, offer a rich speculative lens for exploring people’s interaction with and the societal implications of future technologies. In this paper, we apply this lens to the domain of autonomous mobility, mapping a speculative landscape to inspire the design of future autonomous mobility systems. We systematically examine 36 autonomous mobility systems depicted across 31 movies and construct a speculative landscape that reveals how these systems are imagined in terms of interaction design, agency, and their embeddedness within broader societal contexts. This analysis offers design researchers a resource for inspiration and critical reflection, highlighting opportunities to reimagine …

Effects Of Colored Pavement Line Density On Drivers' Visual Attention Patterns, Yunhui Wu, Sari Yamamoto
IASDR Conference Series
This study addresses concerns in shared space regarding low vehicle yield rates to pedestrians, safety risks, and challenges faced by vulnerable road users. We examine how the density of colored pavement lines influences drivers’ visual attention, specifically, fixation counts on pedestrians, in complex shared space scenes. Using an eye tracker (Tobii Pro Glasses 3, 100 Hz), we recorded the eye movements of 20 participants while they viewed 15 simulated driving videos with different marking designs. Results show that the optimal density correlates with road width: on 6-m roads, low-density markings are most effective; on 4.5-m roads, low density is effective …

Confucian Ritual Space As More-Than-Human Design: Reframing The Zaojing In The Forbidden City, Ning Gao, Yongsheng Tong, An Sui, Hui Zeng
IASDR Conference Series
This article explores the Forbidden City’s zaojing (coffered ceiling) as a case study in reinterpreting ritual space through a “more-than-human” design lens. Bridging Confucian cosmology with contemporary post-humanist design theory, we argue that the imperial Chinese ritual environment was inherently more-than-human-centric, embedding non-human agencies (cosmic forces, mythical beings, and natural elements) into architectural design. We begin by examining Confucian cosmology and imperial architecture, highlighting how the built environment embodied a cosmological order beyond human-centered needs. We then outline a theoretical framework drawing on more-than- human design principles and spatial semiotics to understand architecture as an active mediator between human and …

Perceptemo: Exploring How Generative Ai Affects Emotional Data Sensemaking On Human Perception For Academic Procrastination, Zitian Zhang, Yi-Ching (Janet) Huang
IASDR Conference Series
While Artificial Intelligence (AI) demonstrates potential for supporting data processing and interpretation, limited research investigates how to support individuals in emotional sensemaking in the context of procrastination behaviors. This work introduces Percept Emo, a platform that uses generative AI models (image-to-image and image-to-video) to support people to make sense of and experience their emotional data. It transforms users' sketches of emotions related to procrastination into new visual representations. In a within-subjects experiment, we investigate how AI supports emotional data sensemaking and its influence on perceptions of procrastination by comparing three conditions: no AI, image-to-image, and image-to-video. Results showed that the …

Emotional Transition And Digital Continuity: Exploring Toy Hibernation In Family Households, Yoon Jung Choi, Hayoun Moon, Jaehoon Pyon, Myounghoon Jeon, Sang Won Lee, Chase Stabolepszy, Terry Grant
IASDR Conference Series
Product hibernation—when end-of-life products are kept but no longer used—poses a significant barrier to extending product lifespans within a circular economy. In households with young children, this challenge is particularly evident: toys are frequently outgrown but retained or ultimately discarded once deemed obsolete, even when fully functional. This paper presents findings from a mixed-method study involving interviews with ten families, a survey of 101 families, and an inventory analysis of thirty- three hibernating children’s toys. The study explores the reasons behind toy hibernation, revealing key motivational factors, as well as barriers to sharing when it has the highest value. Initial …

Reimagining Ai Futures. Solarpunk Narratives In Design Education, Anca Serbanescu, Kees Schuller
Reimagining Ai Futures. Solarpunk Narratives In Design Education, Anca Serbanescu, Kees Schuller
IASDR Conference Series
The narrative imaginary surrounding Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been predominantly shaped by science fiction cinema and television, with dystopian scenarios prevailing. This dominance poses a significant challenge by constraining designers’ creative capacities to envision alternatives beyond the dystopian genre. It reinforces fear-based representations, fostering a polarizing perspective of being either for or against AI, rather than embracing a range of diverse viewpoints. Such narrative fundamentalism jeopardizes the foundational values of freedom, equity, and democracy central to design education, narrowing the scope for fostering inclusive and complex understandings of AI. To counteract these limitations, this research introduces the Solarpunk movement as …
Design Next: An Emergent Paradigm Shift, Shyhnan Liou, Ingri P. Hernandez Sibo, Chi-Yi Chang
Design Next: An Emergent Paradigm Shift, Shyhnan Liou, Ingri P. Hernandez Sibo, Chi-Yi Chang
IASDR Conference Series
This paper employs Thomas Kuhn’s paradigm shift framework to analyze the evolution of design, arguing that the field is undergoing a fundamental transformation from Human-Centered Design (HCD) to Assemblage-Centered Design. Historically, design progressed from a pre-paradigm phase (artifact-centered, industrial-era design) to a normal science phase (HCD, emphasizing user needs and design thinking). However, systemic crises such as climate change, social inequality, and AI integration, revealed anomalies in HCD’s user-centric focus, triggering a revolutionary phase. Assemblage-Centered Design redefines design’s ontology (encompassing ecosystems, AI, and socio- technical systems), epistemology (relational/systemic thinking), methodology (transition/speculative design), and teleology (long-term planetary well-being over commercial usability). …

The Emergence Of Cultural Signals In Typographic Systems, César Arturo Puertas, Juan Alfonso De La Ros
The Emergence Of Cultural Signals In Typographic Systems, César Arturo Puertas, Juan Alfonso De La Ros
IASDR Conference Series
This paper explores how through visual analysis of contemporary design of typographic systems in Colombia, it is possible to create a custom framework for clustering and analysis to help recognize the possible emergence of cultural signals of colonised communities and cultural groups. Based on that framework we described these signals in four categories: Abstracted indigenous heritage (cultural revival); hybrid graphic vernacular (vernacular typography); Indigenous linguistic forms (direct linguistic revival); and hybrid cultural abstraction (indirect linguistic revival). We argue that local/regional type design and typography are increasingly serving as a medium of cultural resistance (intentional or unintentional), where designers engage with …

Bridging The Expectation–Reality Gap: A Systematic Design Approach To Facilitate Controllability In Human–Virtual Human Interaction, Lanxi Xiao, Qiong Wu, Yuhan Xie, Mengyu Chen, Zipeng Zhang, Xinyi Guo, Yuxin Zhu, Yating Li, Yan Dong
IASDR Conference Series
Virtual humans (VHs) are human-like intelligent agents increasingly used in human–artificial intelligence (AI) collaborative contexts, where control lability is essential for fostering user trust and ensuring a human-centered experience. Although widely adopted, VHs products are often reported to suffer from poor control lability due to the gap between the limited capabilities of narrow AI and users’ high expectations shaped by their anthropomorphic appearance. However, existing control lability theories focus primarily on action-level mechanisms such as undoing and redoing, providing limited support for users’ perceptual and cognitive understanding of interacting with and controlling AI-infused products. To bridge the expectation-reality gap, this …
Enhancing Storyboard Production With Generative Ai: A Case Study On Public Sector Digital Transformation, Eiji Kano

Designing Psychological Transformation: Qualitative Insights From Immersive Coffee Tasting, Yen-Tzu Huang, Ding-Hau Huang
IASDR Conference Series
This study explores how an immersive coffee tasting experience, integrating sensory design and mindfulness guidance can evoke participants’ psychological transformation and embodied engagement. Thematic analysis identified five interconnected stages: sensory unfolding, immersive perception, mindfulness experience, internal transformation, and behavioral intention. Findings indicate that participants initially heightened their awareness of sensory details—such as the materiality of cups, ambient sounds, and aromas—then entered a state of focused immersion, experiencing emotional resonance and self-reflection through mindfulness. This led to a reinterpretation of meanings and renewed connectedness with the material and social environment. The proposed “Psychological Transformation Model of Immersive Sensory Experience” illustrates the …

Plp-Exhibits: A Human-Centered Adaptive Design Space Based On Geometric Primitives In Mr, Ziyun Tang, Zehong Ouyang, Bingyi Yang, Xukun Shen
IASDR Conference Series
With the introduction of the concept of Pervasive Augmented Reality (PAR), the integration of virtual content with the real world is gradually transitioning from simple image overlay to dynamic, omnipresent, and continuous interactive experiences. In this context, we propose the PLP-Exhibits framework, which is based on spatial Geometric Primitives (points, lines, and planes) and constructs a adaptive layout framework. This framework aims to provide a dynamic design space that adapts to both user behavior and spatial environments for user interface design in exhibition settings. By treating shifts in user position as a trigger mechanism for changes in the interface state, …
