Division I Athletes And Career Choices, Brittany Wooten
Division I Athletes And Career Choices, Brittany Wooten
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
Little is known about the career choices made by college student athletes. There remains a lack of understanding as to what outside influences may lead to the future career goals of student athletes. Furthermore, there remains a gap in understanding regarding the impact of student athlete identity perception within the world of sport and its affect on student athletes as they pursue their post- graduation goals. The purpose of this study was to examine if participation in Division I sport impacts student athletes’ career decision-making and to what extent outside influences may impact this decision. Two in-depth interviews were conducted …

Higher Education And The Student Affairs Profession: Educating Through Dialogue And Community, Kelly Russell
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
In a constantly evolving environment, it is essential that student affairs professionals continually reflect on the impact they have on higher education, and more specifically the impact that have on individual students. It is through such reflection that one is able to develop his or her education philosophy. This paper will first discuss the nature of education, including its purpose and the purpose of student affairs in higher education. Second, this paper will discuss the role of the educator, including the contribution of the student affairs educator and student affairs educators in contrast to the academy. Finally, this paper will …
Barriers And Enablers Of Native Americans In Higher Education: A Review Of The Literature, Christina Shapland
Barriers And Enablers Of Native Americans In Higher Education: A Review Of The Literature, Christina Shapland
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
The barriers and enablers of Native Americans in higher education were examined in four qualitative studies. Family, single parenthood, lack of adequate academic preparation, and finances were consistently found to be barriers to Native Americans in the pursuit of higher education. Persistence factors were identified as on-campus childcare, access to distance education, the support of family, and finding role models within the institution. Native American students experienced considerable isolation and stereotyping at predominantly White institutions. Further research is needed regarding Native American students in higher education. The implementation of building relationships between Native American families and mainstream universities, the recruitment …
Best Practices In International Student Programs, Katrina Anaya, Heather Jacobson, Lisa Jacobson
Best Practices In International Student Programs, Katrina Anaya, Heather Jacobson, Lisa Jacobson
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
The number of international students in the United States is steadily increasing, and these students are important contributors to the diversity and globalization of a campus. Because of this, the authors of this article recommend best practices for serving international students drawn from NAFSA (Association of International Educators), the Institute of International Education, and the Forum on Education Abroad. These best practices are then compared to the standards in Blimling and Whitt’s Good Practices in Student Affairs. Three case studies are then cited to provide examples of how these best practices can be implemented to improve services for international students.
Educational Hypocrisy: Aligning Institutional Values And Endowment Investments, Adam Serafin
Educational Hypocrisy: Aligning Institutional Values And Endowment Investments, Adam Serafin
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
In a 2009 study of 864 institutions, the average university endowment was $372 million and 56 institutions had endowments over $1 billion (NCSE, 2010). University endowments finance destructive and shortsighted global corporations that exist to benefit their respective shareholders, not the common good. University mission statements and values offer a framework for institutional decision- making, so why not investments?

The review concludes by noting the strengths and limitations of the studies, implications for practice in the field, and need for future research.
A Trans Resource Center, Jessica Mcpherson
A Trans Resource Center, Jessica Mcpherson
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
This paper exams the need for a Transgender Resource Center on college campuses. As a result of the on-going discrimination and isolation many transgender students report, this paper provides one option for student development professionals to address the needs of this population. Detailed analysis of the challenges transgen- der students face, such as access to health facilities, study abroad, gender segregated housing and bathrooms, is presented. Gender identity development and discourse is examined and assessment of theory and student needs are presented. A comprehensive descrip- tion of a transgender resource center is suggested as a way to make college campuses …

Community Called Home: Developing A Successful Transition Experience For First Generation Immigrant College Students, Lauren Hildesheim
Community Called Home: Developing A Successful Transition Experience For First Generation Immigrant College Students, Lauren Hildesheim
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
As the population of immigrants in the United States, both legal and undocumented, increases dramatically every year, the number of first generation immigrant students pursuing a postsecondary education continues to rise. This paper seeks to address the needs of first generation immigrants on college campuses, focusing on their needs outside the traditional classroom. The HOME program is a suggested approach for helping immigrant students’ navigate the college terrain, utilizing peer mentor relationships, support groups, and an outdoor retreat component. Higher education institutions must create an inclusive environment where every student feels valued in both their academic and social environments.
