Source Anisotropies And Pulsar Timing Arrays, Bruce Allen, Deepali Agarwal, Joseph D. Romano, Serena Valtolina

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) hunt for gravitational waves (GWs) by searching for the correlations that GWs induce in the time-of-arrival residuals from different pulsars. If the GW sources are of astrophysical origin, then they are located at discrete points on the sky. However, PTA data are often modeled, and subsequently analyzed, via a “standard Gaussian ensemble.” That ensemble is obtained in the limit of an infinite density of vanishingly weak, Poisson-distributed sources. In this paper, we move away from that ensemble, to study the effects of two types of “source anisotropy.” The first (a), which is often called “shot noise,” …

Mentorship, Self-Efficacy, And Professional Identity: Exploring The Impact On The Career Advancement Of Racial And Ethnic Minorities In The Financial Services Industry, Brandon Lee Logan Dec 2024

Mentorship, Self-Efficacy, And Professional Identity: Exploring The Impact On The Career Advancement Of Racial And Ethnic Minorities In The Financial Services Industry, Brandon Lee Logan

JWU Dissertations & Theses

The representation of racial and ethnic minorities in leadership roles within the American financial services industry remains disproportionately low, despite growing diversity initiatives (McKinsey & Company, 2020; U.S. Government Accountability Office, 2022). This poses a problem as it impacts the industry's potential innovation, decision-making, and competitiveness (Dixon-Fyle et al., 2021). The underrepresentation of minorities in such roles highlights systemic issues within corporate culture, particularly in terms of access to mentorship and professional development opportunities, which are critical for career progression (A. Baldwin et al., 2022).

The study is based on Role Identity Theory, theorizing that individuals' roles within their social …

Breaking The Yoke: A Systematic Unmasking Of Challenges To Sustainable Rural Development In South Sudan, Gai Chol Paul

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

South Sudan, a young nation grappling with the legacy of protracted conflict, faces significant challenges in fostering sustainable rural development. While the immense potential of its vast agricultural lands remains largely untapped, the persistent triple threat of insecurity, deficient infrastructure, and the absence of robust government policy actively hinders progress. The ongoing armed conflict, characterized by inter-communal violence and sporadic attacks, casts a long shadow over rural areas in South Sudan. Thus, I developed this mixed-method multiple-case study, grounded in the sustainable livelihoods framework, to explore challenges that hinder sustainable rural development in South Sudan. I collected data through document …

Phosphorylation Of Disordered Proteins Tunes Local And Global Intramolecular Interactions, Emery T Usher, Martin J Fossat, Alex S Holehouse Dec 2024

Phosphorylation Of Disordered Proteins Tunes Local And Global Intramolecular Interactions, Emery T Usher, Martin J Fossat, Alex S Holehouse

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Protein post-translational modifications, such as phosphorylation, are important regulatory signals for diverse cellular functions. In particular, intrinsically disordered protein regions (IDRs) are subject to phosphorylation as a means to modulate their interactions and functions. Toward understanding the relationship between phosphorylation in IDRs and specific functional outcomes, we must consider how phosphorylation affects the IDR conformational ensemble. Various experimental techniques are suited to interrogate the features of IDR ensembles; molecular simulations can provide complementary insights and even illuminate ensemble features that may be experimentally inaccessible. Therefore, we sought to expand the tools available to study phosphorylated IDRs by all-atom Monte Carlo …

Epigenetic Modifiers: Exploring The Roles Of Histone Methyltransferases And Demethylases In Cancer And Neurodegeneration, Lauren Reed, Janak Abraham, Shay Patel, Shilpa S Dhar

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Histone methyltransferases (HMTs) and histone demethylases (HDMs) are critical enzymes that regulate chromatin dynamics and gene expression through the addition and removal of methyl groups on histone proteins. HMTs, such as PRC2 and SETD2, are involved in the trimethylation of histone H3 at lysine 27 and lysine 36, influencing gene silencing and activation. Dysregulation of these enzymes often leads to abnormal gene expression and contributes to tumorigenesis. In contrast, HDMs including KDM7A and KDM2A reverse these methylation marks, and their dysfunction can drive disease progression. In cancer, the aberrant activity of specific HMTs and HDMs can lead to the silencing …

Arousal Effects On Oscillatory Dynamics In The Non-Human Primate Brain, Shashank A Anand, Fatih Sogukpinar, Ilya E Monosov Dec 2024

Arousal Effects On Oscillatory Dynamics In The Non-Human Primate Brain, Shashank A Anand, Fatih Sogukpinar, Ilya E Monosov

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Arousal states are thought to influence many aspects of cognition and behavior by broadly modulating neural activity. Many studies have observed arousal-related modulations of alpha (~8 to 15 Hz) and gamma (~30 to 50 Hz) power and coherence in local field potentials across relatively small groups of brain regions. However, the global pattern of arousal-related oscillatory modulation in local field potentials is yet to be fully elucidated. We simultaneously recorded local field potentials in numerous cortical and subcortical regions in the primate brain and assessed oscillatory activity and inter-regional coherence associated with arousal state. In high arousal states, we found …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Intrinsically disordered protein regions (IDRs) are well established as contributors to intermolecular interactions and the formation of biomolecular condensates. In particular, RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) often harbor IDRs in addition to folded RNA-binding domains that contribute to RBP function. To understand the dynamic interactions of an IDR-RNA complex, we characterized the RNA-binding features of a small (68 residues), positively charged IDR-containing protein, Small ERDK-Rich Factor (SERF). At high concentrations, SERF and RNA undergo charge-driven associative phase separation to form a protein- and RNA-rich dense phase. A key advantage of this model system is that this threshold for demixing is sufficiently high …

Deep Generative And Discriminative Models For Cognitive Load Prediction From Small And Noisy Eeg, Felix Havugimana

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

While Intelligent systems such as Intelligent tutoring system (ITS), assistive technology solutions, and video gaming has the potential to significantly reduce cognitive load by automating tasks and providing timely information, it can also increase demand on a user's working memory (WM) capacity, if not designed and implemented thoughtfully. WM is responsible for temporarily storing and processing information to execute cognitive tasks. However, due to its limited capacity and duration, excessive use of WM can lead to high cognitive load (CL), adversely affecting performance on various mental tasks (e.g., learning, comprehension, driving, and problem-solving). Cognitive load refers to the amount of …

Mechanical Degradation Of Plastics: An Implication For Agricultural Soil Health, Linkon Bhattacharjee Dec 2024

Mechanical Degradation Of Plastics: An Implication For Agricultural Soil Health, Linkon Bhattacharjee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The growing public awareness of plastic pollution and its harmful environmental impacts on public health and ecological safety has raised multiple questions regarding the rate of its accumulation, long-term fate, and transport within the environment. However, the extent of plastic release into the terrestrial environment, such as farmlands, remains inadequately understood, though it is expected to exceed that of the ocean. Therefore, this dissertation focuses on investigating the mechanical degradation of plastics that leads to the generation of microplastics through fragmentation in agricultural farmlands. This dissertation addresses several knowledge gaps regarding the influence of environmental conditions on the mechanical degradation …

This integration allows for examining meaning formation which accounts for visual cues that support verbal mode in vlog content. The …

On The Logistic Polynomials And Logistic Kernels With Applications In Machine Learning, Alexander Saint Jefferson Dec 2024

On The Logistic Polynomials And Logistic Kernels With Applications In Machine Learning, Alexander Saint Jefferson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Orthogonal polynomials have had vast historical applications in applied mathematics, particularly in differential equations and numerical analysis. In recent years, they have become instrumental as a natural basis for constructing kernel systems in machine learning (ML). In this thesis, we orthogonalize a set of polynomials, the Logistic Polynomials, first developed by George and Rousseau, using the Gram-Schmidt process. We show that this new Logistic Orthogonal Polynomial System (LOPS) satisfies the hypergeometric differential equation and we relate the system to the Legendre polynomials. The connection to the Legendre polynomials has motivated this study to explore applications of the LOPS in ML, …

Particle Size And Settling Velocity Of Bed And Suspended Sediments For Mud-Sand Beds, Leo Van Rijn, Luitze Perk, Bas Van Maren, Andy Manning Dec 2024

Particle Size And Settling Velocity Of Bed And Suspended Sediments For Mud-Sand Beds, Leo Van Rijn, Luitze Perk, Bas Van Maren, Andy Manning

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The particle size and the settling velocity of sediments are key parameters in sediment transport studies. However, it remains surprisingly difficult to determine particle size and settling velocity distribution of fine-grained sediments (mud-sand). A large range of methodologies exist to measure either the particle size distribution or to measure the settling velocity. An important influential parameter is the shape of fine-grained sediments, with clay minerals being shaped as plates rather than as spheres. Furthermore, the settling velocity of fine particles is influenced by turbulent shear and flocculation processes. Sometimes, the sediment samples are pre-treated (destroying inter-particle bonds) to measure the …

Purpose: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a multifactorial disorder that has been linked to increased risk for behavioral, academic, and interpersonal problems. Developmental language disorder (DLD) has also been linked to poor outcomes in these areas. The presence of co-occurring disorders in children’s profiles is generally associated with poorer outcomes relative to profiles consisting of only one disorder. This study investigated the extent to which co-occurring DLD in children already identified with ADHD presented increased risk for severity of their primary ADHD symptoms, the presence of secondary behavioral problems, and/or increased problems in the tertiary areas of academic performance and interpersonal …

Using The Lehmer Mean To Assess Business Data Protection: Statistical Disclosure Control And The Truncated Moment Problem, Mark Stander, Julian Stander Dec 2024

Using The Lehmer Mean To Assess Business Data Protection: Statistical Disclosure Control And The Truncated Moment Problem, Mark Stander, Julian Stander

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Confidential business data needs protection against disclosure. Often this data is protected by releasing sample means, variances and higher power moments. Motivated by statistical disclosure control obligations and the need to publish business data safely, we explain how calculating the Lehmer mean from released power moments can lead to the unwanted disclosure of the largest data value. We explain how similar disclosure can apply to smaller data values and provide an approximate solution to the Truncated Moment Problem. We briefly discuss the Gini mean and the relationship between sample central and raw moments.
