Flying Under The Radar: Navigating Through Frustrations, Tears, And The Politics Of The Liberal Arts Curriculum, Sandra Houghton
Flying Under The Radar: Navigating Through Frustrations, Tears, And The Politics Of The Liberal Arts Curriculum, Sandra Houghton
Theses and Dissertations
The elements and principles of art continue to highly influence curriculum in the typical art foundations class. The reduction of art and artmaking to their formal properties constricts a student’s ability to engage in real-life artist processes, and many important contextual meanings are lost. Consequently, art foundations curriculum derived from the elements and principles of art narrows the lens through which we create, teach, and talk about art. In my own experience as an art teacher, I have found that this approach limits my teaching and makes it difficult to fully and authentically understand the works of other artists and …
Understanding The Role Of The Heat Transfer Coefficient Between Tool/Workpiece Interface During Friction Stir Welding, Matthew Goodson
Understanding The Role Of The Heat Transfer Coefficient Between Tool/Workpiece Interface During Friction Stir Welding, Matthew Goodson
Theses and Dissertations
The heat transfer coefficient is a key parameter in modeling friction stir welding and has yet to be measured experimentally. The importance of this parameter was shown through validating friction stir models on both sides of the tool/workpiece interface. Both a transient plunge and a steady state model were validated by matching experimental temperatures. The steady state tool temperatures were matched (with in 2.5%), but the steady state workpiece temperatures were off by around 20%. The transient model of the FSW plunge showed the effect of varying the ℎ𝑊/𝑇 on workpiece temperatures and tool temperatures. Two methods were looked at …
Artificial Creativity: How Artificial Intelligence Will Impact Creativity Via Post-Production, Nicole Dwyer
Artificial Creativity: How Artificial Intelligence Will Impact Creativity Via Post-Production, Nicole Dwyer
Honors Thesis
My thesis lives in the world of Post-Production, and it contains both a creative and written component. I was the editor for four Undergraduate thesis projects. Seeking to gain experience in editing various genres, I worked in drama, sports, period piece, coming of age, and adventure. My biggest takeaways from these projects are the importance of organization, communication, time management, and editing with a sense of imagination. I became a more confident, resilient, and prepared editor through these experiences.
Along with the hands-on filmmaking element of my thesis, I also conducted research on how artificial intelligence will impact conceptions of …

Anthropology: Undergraduate Student Scholarship
This report was prepared by the students and instructor of the "Right to Health in Theory and Practice" class taught in the fall of 2024 at the University of Denver. The report was prepared for the Vice Ministry of Health Regulation, Surveillance and Control of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance of Guatemala. The work used the following guiding question: What can a country like Guatemala do to regulate international pharmaceutical clinical trials in the context of research commercialization? In other words, the work was guided by three important elements. First, the regulatory aspect of clinical trials. Second, …
Relationship Between The Transition To Remote Work And Job Satisfaction, Eric Wong
Relationship Between The Transition To Remote Work And Job Satisfaction, Eric Wong
JWU Dissertations & Theses
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive research study was to explore how employees who had not worked remotely before, and who began remote jobs, describe the benefits and challenges they experienced during their transition to remote work. Using Maslow’s (1943) hierarchy of needs as the theoretical framework, 10 participants were interviewed regarding the benefits and challenges associated with remote work. Results revealed that the benefits of transitioning to remote work largely increased job satisfaction and job performance. These benefits included limited or no commuting to work, enhanced flexibility in work schedules, reduced or less anxiety during work, and increased family …

Aerodynamic Noise Reduction Of Wind Turbine Blades, Steven Davenport
Aerodynamic Noise Reduction Of Wind Turbine Blades, Steven Davenport
Honors Theses
This project is presented to meet Western Michigan University’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences Senior Design requirements. With wind turbines becoming increasingly popular as a form of energy generation, the need to reduce the aerodynamic noise is needed. Most commercial wind farms use turbines with a NACA 0012 airfoil. Thus, that is the only profile shape considered in this research. Seven modifications were made to a NACA 0012 airfoil to reduce aerodynamic noise. The airfoils were designed in SolidWorks and 3D printed at the WMU College of Aviation. The airfoils were simulated in Ansys Fluent and experimentally tested in …

FHSS Mentored Research Conference
This study investigated different possible causes of happiness as is is measured by the World Happiness Survey. Country-level measurements of GDP, life expectancy, social support, and government trust all have significant positive relationships with happiness, even when controlling for region. Region fixed-effects and time analysis further supports those relationships.

At some time, all people struggle either mentally, physically or emotionally. Most have some form of struggle that we carry around with us. Some show their struggle while others hide it very deep down. I create illustrations to show people that they are not alone in their struggles.
I build illustrations that incorporate heavy outlines, with a tone of cartoonishness and I also incorporate type. I want the illustrations to have heavier strokes to help provide a sense of unrealisticness to very serious concepts. I incorporate text as a way of giving the piece a direct meaning. I want to …

Superoxide dismutase enzymes are a major defense against superoxide, which is a potent reactive oxygen species. Misregulation of reactive oxygen species and subsequent neuronal damage are etiological hallmarks of neurodegenerative disease. Macrocyclic small molecules have offered inroads toward functional SOD1 mimics. Herein, we report a series of five tetra-aza macrocyclic RPy2N2 ligands, varied by 4-position substitution of the pyridine ring with both electron-donating (R = OMe) and withdrawing groups (R = Cl, I, and CF3) to offer the first comparison to well-studied RPyN3 congeners and other mimics in the literature. New ligands …

This was a project for oral history 300 at the University of New Mexico in which William used this opportunity to hear about his family and learn about his ancestors.
An In-Depth Investigation Into Yersinia Pestis Phages: Isolating A Yersinia Pestis Phage From Soil And Constructing A Comprehensive Phylogenetic Analysis Of Known Yersinia Pestis Phages, Jacqueline Chavez
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of the plague, has become increasingly resistant to many antibiotics; therefore, alternatives such as phage therapy are necessary. Phage therapy uses combinations of bacteriophages or phages, which are viruses that only infect bacteria. However, phages—especially Y. pestis phages —are severely understudied. Thus, this research has sought to specifically isolate a phage from soil that infects Y. pestis. There were 146 samples that were collected from across the US, focusing on those with reported cases of plague. These samples were enriched with Y. pestis to maximize the amount of potential phage that target Y. pestis. …

Investigating The Efficacy Of Prompt Engineering Techniques For Research Survey Paper Generation Using Large Language Models, Innocent Obed Awidi
Theses and Dissertations
The recent advancements in large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, offer promising potential for automating academic writing tasks. This study investigates the efficacy of prompt engineering techniques in guiding LLMs to generate high-quality research survey papers, specifically exploring their application in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) in drug development and large language model customization for classification. Using a mixed-methods approach, this research assessed the impact of prompt engineering on the coherence, relevance, and overall quality of generated content through quantitative and qualitative analyses. Techniques including prompt refinement, contextual prompting, and iterative prompting were systematically applied to enhance the …
