Barriers To Help-Seeking Behaviors And Interventions For Adolescents With Co-Occurring Disorders, Hannah A. Fisher
Barriers To Help-Seeking Behaviors And Interventions For Adolescents With Co-Occurring Disorders, Hannah A. Fisher
Counselor Education Capstones
Adolescent mental health problems have become an extremely prevalent topic for discussion since the coronavirus pandemic. Adolescents experience five major barriers to obtaining mental health professional services including stigma, access to services, mental health professional mistrust, adolescent lack of mental health knowledge, and lack of support. These barriers create obstacles for adolescents seeking proper, affordable, high-quality, and culturally specific mental health care for their mental health needs. There are many different approaches to take to combat the identified barriers. Four different types of approaches are important to consider including what youth can do, what the family of the youth can …
Hyperlocal Gift Economies Under The Duberstein Gift Standard, Nicolás R. Munsen
Hyperlocal Gift Economies Under The Duberstein Gift Standard, Nicolás R. Munsen
Notre Dame Law Review Reflection
Hyperlocal gift economies, such as those moderated by the “Buy Nothing Project,” have become increasingly popular in the United States and abroad within the last decade. Explicitly banning the buying, selling, trading, or bartering of goods and services, hyperlocal gift economies instead encourage local community members to give to each other out of their own abundance and without any expectation of return or obligation—in short, to give and receive gifts. But while members of these groups regard these transactions as gifts, it is unclear if the Internal Revenue Service would agree. The Internal Revenue Code’s definition of “gift” in I.R.C. …

Cross-National Prevalence And Legality Of Consanguinity & Its Implications For State Security, Emma Dart
Cross-National Prevalence And Legality Of Consanguinity & Its Implications For State Security, Emma Dart
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis examines the impact of cousin marriage prevalence on state stability and the development and behaviors of terrorist organizations, with a special focus on the destabilization of states through the power of kinship networks. Cousin marriage, often intertwined with other social practices such as patrilocality and polygyny, creates an isolated power structure that reinforces the fraternal structure present in kinship networks. The kinship network then uses the power gained through the trust in the community to undermine the legitimate rule of law. This research emphasizes the importance of understanding cousin marriage and its contribution to state stability and finds …
Chaos Creator: Misinformation Inoculation In Information Literacy Instruction, Mandi Goodsett
Chaos Creator: Misinformation Inoculation In Information Literacy Instruction, Mandi Goodsett
Michael Schwartz Library Publications
Combating the spread of misinformation is a struggle that has inspired considerable research in the fields of psychology, education, political science, and information science, among others. Such research has found that “prebunking” or “inoculation” techniques—strategies that reduce the acceptance of misinformation before one has encountered it—have had marked success. However, there is little evidence that librarians are deliberately employing inoculation techniques in their information literacy (IL) instruction. Via a quasi-experimental study, this research explores the effect of prebunking techniques in an IL instruction session on undergraduate students’ ability to recognise misinformation. The prebunking techniques are delivered through a competitive game …

Visualization Of Paleocurrents On A Web Application Using Gplates, Anjan Sapkota
Visualization Of Paleocurrents On A Web Application Using Gplates, Anjan Sapkota
MS in Computer Science Theses
Paleocurrents are flow directions derived from features of sedimentary rocks that reveal the direction of the current of wind or water that deposited the sediment. In 2015, Brand et al. created a global database of paleocurrents, which contains over 1,000,000 measurements worldwide: North America, South America, Australia, Great Britain, parts of Western Europe, China, Africa are fairly well represented; Antarctica, Eastern Europe, and Asia are modestly represented and Russia is poorly represented. The contribution of this thesis is a web application that uses the GPlates’ Application Programming Interface (API) to visualize global paleocurrents through time in an interactive way based …

The Cftc, Mqd, And Climate Change, Todd Phillips, Will Dobbs-Allsopp
Notre Dame Law Review Reflection
In June 2022, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) issued a request for information (RFI) “to better inform its understanding and oversight of climate-related financial risk as pertinent to the derivatives markets and underlying commodities markets.” The financial regulatory agency is one of several working to address climate-related risks present within the financial system. Given its unique role in regulating derivatives and overseeing commodity markets, the CFTC is working to ensure that the private sector may effectively use those products to address its own climate-related risks. Because such risks threaten the nation’s financial stability and private-sector operations, it is imperative …
Scrutiny Of Employee Covenants Not To Compete Under The Rule Of Reason: An Empirical Inquiry, Daniel A. Crane
Scrutiny Of Employee Covenants Not To Compete Under The Rule Of Reason: An Empirical Inquiry, Daniel A. Crane
Notre Dame Law Review Reflection
For over 300 years, the common law has scrutinized employee covenants not to compete for their reasonableness. That is about to change. On April 23, 2024, the Federal Trade Commission announced a rule that will prohibit employers from imposing noncompete agreements on workers. The rule declares all covenants not to compete in the employment context to be unfair methods of competition under section 5 of the FTC Act. If the rule takes effect, thirty million contracts will become illegal. The FTC justifies this rule based on the ostensibly pernicious effects of employee covenants not to compete—limiting employee opportunities to pursue …
How Leadership Styles Impact Lgbtq+ Civil Rights, Milo Thompson
How Leadership Styles Impact Lgbtq+ Civil Rights, Milo Thompson
Theses
Leaders rely on different leadership styles to legitimize their rule and obtain political power. However, these leadership styles have positive or negative impacts for protecting human rights in the LGBTQ+ community. This thesis examines how political leadership styles impact protecting or repressing the civil rights of the LGBTQ+ community. This article argues that constitutionalist leaders who abide by the “rule of law” will better protect LGBTQ+ civil rights than personalist, ideological, or performative leadership styles. Drawing on both qualitative and quantitative research methods, this paper examines how leadership styles impact LGBTQ+ discrimination.
Assessment Tools In Verbal Behavior Research: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Danielle Pisarek
Assessment Tools In Verbal Behavior Research: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Danielle Pisarek
Theses
Assessment tools are an essential component of applied behavior analysis (ABA), offering important information to assist in the design of intervention strategies for individuals with developmental disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Previous research has studied the validity, consistency, and effectiveness of some of these tools, with studies such as Dixon et al. (2017), Padilla and Akers (2021), Stewart et al. (2010), and Usry et al. (2017) providing insights into their attributes, shortcomings, and relevance. However, publications focusing on the use of these tools within behavior analytical research are lacking. This systematic literature review (SLR) aimed to identify and analyze …

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
This report explores and examines some of the intersections between public librarianship and food justice. Food justice is a topic many working in public libraries wish to understand and put into action. Many struggle to do so in a way that is sustainable for the institution of the public library. These findings emerged from focus groups with public library workers conducted from November 2023 to March 2024. This report introduces five themes based on focus group conversations. Three themes describe how public library workers think about the intersections of food justice and public librarianship (1-3). Two describe how library workers …

Correlation Between Maximal Eccentric And Isometric Multi-Joint Lower-Extremity Strength And Vertical Jumping Performance In Young Adults, Joonsun Park, Cassidy Weeks, Brennan J. Thompson, Talin Louder
Kinesiology and Health Science Student Research
Maximal eccentric (MES) and isometric (MIS) muscle strength may enhance vertical jump performance by facilitating preloading and reducing energy loss during the eccentric (ECC) phase of the stretch-shortening cycle (SSC). However, the contributions of ECC and isometric (ISO) strength to the countermovement (CMJ) and depth jump (DJ) remain unclear due to variability in assessment methods (e.g., dynamometry, isometric mid-thigh pull) and the limited range of metrics examined in prior research. The aim of this study was to assess correlations between multi-joint lower extremity MES and MIS, obtained using a seated multi-joint isokinetic dynamometer, and 13 vertical ground reaction force (GRF) …

Cancelling The "Big Deal" At A Public University: A Discussion Of Stem Faculty Perceptions Of Cancellation And An Examination Of Post-Cancellation Usage Data, Amanda Mccormick, Erin Rowley
Law Librarian Journal Articles
This article discusses how faculty, staff, and students at the University at Buffalo (UB), a public Carnegie R1 university, were impacted by the cancellation of the Elsevier ScienceDirect Big Deal package. After the cancellation, UB participated in a multi-site study which included interviewing faculty about the effect of the cancellation on their research and teaching. In general, the faculty were supportive of the cancellation. There was frustration expressed with the current structure of the publishing industry, particularly with the exorbitant pricing of journal subscriptions. Later analysis of usage data at UB post-cancellation was conducted; unsurprisingly, the data showed a decrease …

Research On Non‑Invasive Industrial Equipment Monitoring Methods, Xueming Zhao, Guozhao Yang, Zhaowen Yang, Shuang Hao, Long Jiao
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
Non-invasive load monitoring (NILM) technology can obtain the electricity consumption information of various electrical devices of users without intruding into their premises, solely through the analysis of data from their electricity meters. NILM has been extensively researched and applied in residential load disaggregation, but its application in industrial loads is limited. On one hand, industrial loads differ significantly from residential loads in terms of load characteristics and data distribution, leading to a noticeable performance decline when methods designed for residential scenarios are applied to industrial settings. On the other hand, industrial users, concerned about privacy protection, are reluctant to disclose …

Kepler-51 is a ≲1 Gyr old Sun-like star hosting three transiting planets with radii ≈6-9 R ⊕ and orbital periods ≈45-130 days. Transit timing variations (TTVs) measured with past Kepler and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations have been successfully modeled by considering gravitational interactions between the three transiting planets, yielding low masses and low mean densities (≲0.1 g cm−3) for all three planets. However, the transit time of the outermost transiting planet Kepler-51d recently measured by the James Webb Space Telescope 10 yr after the Kepler observations is significantly discrepant from the prediction made by the three-planet TTV …
Simulation Education To Improve Confidence Levels In Using Alternative Methods Of Restraint With Children On An Inpatient Psychiatric Unit, Roshni Patel
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Summary Seclusion and restraints, while sometimes necessary for patient and staff safety, can result in negative outcomes, including physical and psychological harm to patients. This doctoral project addressed the critical issue of improving inpatient nurses’ confidence in applying alternative methods to seclusion and restraints. These alternatives are essential in psychiatric and acute care settings to promote patient safety, reduce the use of coercive interventions, and support a more humane approach to patient care. The practice problem identified was a notable lack of confidence and knowledge among inpatient nurses regarding using these alternative methods, which led to overreliance on seclusion and …
Early Childhood Faculty Perspectives On Inclusion Of Antibias Curriculum Or Components In Preprimary Teacher Training Curriculum In The United States, Carlotta Conley
Early Childhood Faculty Perspectives On Inclusion Of Antibias Curriculum Or Components In Preprimary Teacher Training Curriculum In The United States, Carlotta Conley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem addressed in this study was that there was the likelihood of a mismatch between preprimary teachers’ racial, ethnic, and cultural make-up and the children and families they educate and care for in the preprimary classroom from birth to 5 years. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to examine early childhood education (ECE) community college faculty perspectives on the importance of and challenges with implementing antibias curriculum or components into preprimary education training. The conceptual framework was Smyth’s model of reflection and the Learning for Justice organization’s antibias framework. For this basic qualitative design, data were collected …

The Relative Strength Of Social Dominance Orientation, Belief In A Just World, And Colorblind Racial Attitudes In Predicting Support For Race-Based College-Admission Affirmative Action Policies, Allison Nicole Gaines
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Students accepted into college programs are granted an opportunity to develop marketable skills they can use to their advantage in a competitive job market. However, students are not always afforded equal access to these opportunities. While some colleges and universities implemented race-based affirmative action policies to mitigate discrimination in the admissions process, resistance to these policies has impeded efforts to ensure that applicants receive an equal educational opportunity. Previous studies examined various legitimizing myths, such as the myth of meritocracy and just world beliefs. Yet, no studies have determined the relative strength of social dominance orientation, belief in a just …

Solutions To Mitigate Information Security Breaches And Protect Personally Identifiable Information In A Public-Sector Cloud Computing Environment, Valerie Johneeda Rountree
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Information is a significant asset to organizations because more organizations are moving data and applications to the cloud, so it is critical to ensure the protection of personally identifiable information (PII) stored in the cloud. The specific research problem was that information technology project managers (ITPM) lack a unified approach to protecting PII stored on the cloud. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to understand how ITPMs may implement viable solutions to mitigate the frequent occurrences of information security breaches in a public cloud environment. The National Institute of Standards and Technology provided the conceptual framework for the …
An Educational Intervention To Increase Nurse Practitioners’ Knowledge And Awareness Of Polypharmacy, Kiana Piedrahita
An Educational Intervention To Increase Nurse Practitioners’ Knowledge And Awareness Of Polypharmacy, Kiana Piedrahita
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The presence of multiple health problems can contribute to the simultaneous use of multiple medications by an individual, also known as polypharmacy. While polypharmacy can be necessary, it has the potential risk of adverse drug reactions and possible hospitalization. In the local organization, leadership noted that 47% of patients seen are elderly individuals who have multiple comorbidities, indicating the probable use of multiple medications. Thus, purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice project was to determine if an educational intervention focused on polypharmacy and the use of the electronic medical record to manage polypharmacy increased knowledge and awareness among nurse …
