Evaluation Of A Token Reinforcement System For Assignment Completion In Students With Educational Disabilities, Brandon O'Dell
Evaluation Of A Token Reinforcement System For Assignment Completion In Students With Educational Disabilities, Brandon O'Dell
Theses
Token reinforcement systems are an effective tool in applied behavior analysis. Studies as early as the 1960s and 70s have demonstrated the effectiveness of token economy from addressing the behaviors of psychiatric patients (e.g., Allyon & Azrin, 1965) to supporting the academic achievement of students in school settings (e.g., McLaughlin & Malaby, 1972) Most recently, Espinoza and Hackenberg (2024) discussed the history and effectiveness of token reinforcement, while providing practical recommendations for its application. The current study aimed to implement a token reinforcement system to increase assignment completion and accuracy in three eighth-grade students with various medical and educational diagnoses …

Faculty Research 2024
BACKGROUND: Advances in our understanding of the molecular biology of meningiomas have led to significant gains in the ability to predict patient prognosis and tumor recurrence and to identify novel targets for therapeutic design. Specifically, classification of meningiomas based on DNA methylation has greatly improved our ability to risk stratify patients, however new questions have arisen in terms of the underlying impact these DNA-methylation signatures have on meningioma biology.
METHODS: This study utilizes RNA-sequencing data from 486 meningioma samples corresponding to 3 meningioma DNA-methylation groups (merlin-intact, immune-enriched, and hypermitotic), followed by in vitro experiments utilizing human meningioma cell lines.
RESULTS: …

Why The Ostensible Agency Tort Doctrine Is Incoherent, Daniel Harris
Why The Ostensible Agency Tort Doctrine Is Incoherent, Daniel Harris
University of Miami Business Law Review
One of the most perplexing areas of current tort law is the ostensible agency tort doctrine, which courts use to determine whether companies should be held liable for the negligence of their independent contractors. In most cases, liability under this doctrine requires proof the plaintiff detrimentally relied on a representation that the contractor was an employee of the defendant. However, in cases involving the negligence of independent contractor emergency room doctors, courts often hold hospitals liable under the ostensible agency tort doctrine without requiring such proof. Why does the doctrine take two inconsistent forms?
This Article argues that the law’s …
Exploring Hypertension Prevalence Through Perceived Health Beliefs, Sarah E. Wagman
Exploring Hypertension Prevalence Through Perceived Health Beliefs, Sarah E. Wagman
Honors Capstones
Hypertension is a form of heart disease that is extremely prevalent, affecting many Americans. This disease manifests from countless risk factors often modifiable from an individual’s lifestyle behavior. Many health initiatives are understood by the public including healthy eating, exercise, and maintaining adequate health, but incidence continues to rise. To better understand this occurrence, a framework called the Health Belief Model is used to answer why individuals make the health decisions that they do in relation to hypertension. Participants in both individual, small group, and large group settings were invited to attend a Hypertension Awareness Event. Participants were asked to …
Social Media Vs. Our Brains, Angela Liu
Social Media Vs. Our Brains, Angela Liu
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The central research question I will be investigating is how social media affects our brains. We have witnessed a significant impact of social media on our youth. The rise of social media in this generation has also created one of the biggest generational gaps yet. Additionally, social media has an even bigger effect on kids who are exposed to it at very young ages. I will be studying how social media affects one’s moods, thoughts, and behaviors, as well as what social media physically does to one’s brain. For example, studies have shown that social media triggers brain activities that …

Perceptions Of Clinicians Towards Offenders Who Utilize The Good Lives Model For Sex Offender Treatment, Janel Nicole Harper
Perceptions Of Clinicians Towards Offenders Who Utilize The Good Lives Model For Sex Offender Treatment, Janel Nicole Harper
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Understanding how clinicians perceive offenders who utilize the strength-based good lives model (GLM) in treatment may help facilitate more acceptance among clinicians to incorporate strength-based alternatives as well as provide better therapeutic outcomes in treatment. The purpose of this qualitative grounded theory study was to examine the perceptions of clinicians who utilize the GLM for sex offender treatment. Grounded theory was utilized to formulate a theory regarding clinician perceptions towards offenders and its social change implications. The sample comprised of 11 clinical health professionals from mental health agencies who currently work or have worked with sex offenders within the past …

"Young people have easy access to an array of fictional characters and celebrities, many of whom exist across platforms (e.g., protagonists from the graphic novel Heartstopper now appear in live-action on Netflix) and are manifested in toys and other merchandise. Children and adolescents often create powerful, socioemotional connections with fictional characters and celebrities called parasocial relationships (PSRs). Preschoolers clutching Elmo dolls, tweens fantasizing about interactions with TikTok influencers, and queer teens finding affirmation in a gay couple on Schitt’s Creek all hint at possible PSRs. These one-sided, imagined social ties might raise concerns for parents and other stakeholders; however, PSRs …
Case Study On A Shift To Open Educational Resources In An Academic Department, Karina May Jackson
Case Study On A Shift To Open Educational Resources In An Academic Department, Karina May Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
Open educational resources (OER) have the potential to significantly impact the landscape of higher education. However, many users of OER find it difficult to adopt programmatically due to the barriers of awareness, quality assurance, institutional culture, and sustainability. This case study of the successful OER adoption in an education department serves as a look into the conditions and practices that allowed for the promotion, continued use, and production of open educational resources. The results indicate that the climate, technology, and opportunity costs surrounding tenure and promotion were key factors in the faculty's experience with acting on their inclinations toward openness.

Bile Duct Ligation-Induced Cirrhosis Does Not Alter The Blood-Brain Barrier Permeability To Sucrose In Rats, Mohammad K. Miah, Ulrich Bickel, Reza Mehvar
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Contradictory results have been reported about the effects of liver diseases on the blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability to markers. For instance, both an increase and no change in the BBB permeability to BBB markers sodium fluorescein and Evans blue have been reported in experimental cholestasis induced by bile duct ligation (BDL) in rats. These contradictory effects might be due to inherent limitations of these markers and/or methodological issues. Here, we investigated the time course of the impact of BDL in rats on BBB permeability using a recently developed stable isotope labeled marker [13C]sucrose, which is expected to be …
