Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common pediatric infections. This study evaluated the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of 3511 uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) isolated from pediatric patients in the United States from 2014 to 2023. The database from the SENTRY antimicrobial surveillance program from 89 medical centers was utilized as a data source. The antimicrobial susceptibility was tested using the microbroth dilution technique against 24 antimicrobial agents. MICs were determined using the CLSI/EUCAST/FDA breakpoint criteria. All the antimicrobials reported susceptibility rates above 80% except for tetracycline (76.2%), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (69.7%), and ampicillin-sulbactam (55.7%). During the study period, the susceptibility rates …

The ongoing development of molecularly targeted therapies in addition to the new standard of care combination of azacitidine and venetoclax (AZA-VEN) has transformed the prognostic outlook for older, transplant-ineligible patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). While conventional treatments, such as standard anthracycline and cytarabine- based chemotherapy or hypomethylating agent (HMA) monotherapy, are associated with a generally poor prognosis in this patient population, the use of these novel regimens can result in long-lasting, durable remissions in select patient subgroups. Furthermore, the simultaneous discovery of resistance mechanisms to targeted therapies and AZA-VEN has enabled the identification of patient subgroups with inferior outcomes, …

Biophysical Adaptations Of Collective Cell Migration Through Multiscale Obstructions And Collagen Fibers In Extracellular Matrices, Ye Lim Lee
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Collective cell migration is a multiscale process, regulated by mechanosensitive proteins, adhesions between cells and with the extracellular matrix (ECM), and force propagation across length scales. The collective cell migration occurs as the cells receive the mechanical stimuli from the extracellular matrix and respond by generating forces to migrate. This behavior is widely observed in biological processes such as wound repair, angiogenesis, and pathogenic events like cancer metastasis and adipose tissue dysfunction. In these processes, cells often encounter heterogeneous topologies that disrupt and alter collective migration, yet it remains unclear how changes in matrix topology affect migration speed and cell-cell …

Tanzania Journal of Science
Malaria is a febrile illness affecting a large population worldwide. Even though malaria is curable and preventable it continues to pose a significant health risk, economic effects, and social effects in the population. This study formulates a mathematical model to study the transmission dynamics of malaria in a population with different immune status. By dividing the population based on immune status, the model provides insights into how immunity influences the interaction between hosts and malaria parasites, particularly in terms of infection rates, immune responses, and propose appropriate control for effective elimination. The basic reproduction number is computed using the next-generation …

Hydroxyacetone (HA) is an atmospheric oxidation product of isoprene and other organic precursors that can form brown carbon (BrC). Measured bulk aqueous-phase reaction rates of HA with ammonium sulfate, methylamine, and glycine suggest that these reactions cannot compete with aqueous-phase hydroxyl radical oxidation. In cloud chamber photooxidation experiments with either gaseous or particulate HA in the presence of the same N-containing species, BrC formation was minor, with similar mass absorption coefficients at 365 nm (<0.05 m2 g–1). However, rapid changes observed in aerosol volume and gas-phase species concentrations suggest that the lack of BrC was not due to slow reactivity. Filter-based UHPLC/(+)ESI-HR-QTOFMS analysis revealed that the SOA became heavily oligomerized, with average molecular masses of ∼400 amu in all cases. Oligomers contained, on average, 3.9 HA, 1.5 ammonia, and 1.6 other small aldehydes, including, in descending order of abundance, acetaldehyde, glycolaldehyde, glyoxal, and methylglyoxal. PTR-ToF-MS confirmed the production of these aldehydes. We identify C17H26O5, C10H22O9, C15H27NO7, C17H23NO5, and C18H32N2O9 as potential tracer ions for HA oligomers. We hypothesize that efficient oligomerization without substantial BrC production is due to negligible N-heterocycle (e.g., imidazoles/pyrazines) formation. While HA photooxidation is unlikely a significant atmospheric BrC source, it may contribute significantly to aqueous SOA formation.

Transplant-Associated Tma: The Conundrum Of Diagnosis And Treatment, Ang Li, Sarah E Sartain
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Transplant-associated thrombotic microangiopathy (TA-TMA) after hematopoietic cell transplantation is characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia (MAHA) with persistent schistocytosis, elevated markers of hemolysis, thrombocytopenia, and microvascular thrombosis leading to ischemic injuries in the kidneys and other organs. The initial evaluation of the disease requires confirmation of non-immune MAHA and careful examination of known secondary causes of TMA. Due to increased likelihood of long-term renal failure and overall mortality, a rapid diagnosis and treatment of the underlying trigger is needed. However, the diagnostic criteria proposed to define TA-TMA remain insufficient. sC5b9, the soluble form of the membrane attack complex of the terminal …

Inferring the intentions and emotions of others from behavior is crucial for social cognition. While neuroimaging studies have identified brain regions involved in social inference, it remains unknown whether performing social inference is an abstract computation that generalizes across different stimulus categories or is specific to certain stimulus domain. We recorded single-neuron activity from the medial temporal lobe (MTL) and the medial frontal cortex (MFC) in neurosurgical patients performing different types of inferences from images of faces, hands, and natural scenes. Our findings indicate distinct neuron populations in both regions encoding inference type for social (faces, hands) and nonsocial (scenes) …

Outside The Dichotomy: Redefining Judith As A Prophet, Heidyn Von Bose
Studia Antiqua
The character of Judith has often been reduced to a dichotomy: is she a pro-feminist or an anti-feminist character? This traditional debate limits Judith and tries to squeeze her into ill-fitting literary boxes. The fol- lowing paper offers a more nuanced interpretation for the character and role of Judith within her story, particularly that Judith is a prophet. It first dem- onstrates that she meets the criteria of a prophet by synthesizing the works of Martti Nissinen, Esther Hamori, and Lester L. Grabbe. It then examines how her “irritations”—morally or culturally questionable actions—do not disqualify her from this role. The …

A knowledgeable reader of the Hebrew Bible understands that there are two conflicting conquest narratives contained in the books of Joshua and Judges. This paper seeks to reframe Joshua 5–11 in a genre other than the traditional interpretation of a conquest narrative. These chapters of Joshua, as compared with Merneptah’s Victory Stele and the annals of Adad-Nārārī II, fit thematically into an entirely different genre from ancient Near Eastern literature: hymns of glory. Using four char- acteristics inspired by the work of Susan Hollis—propagandistic royal ideology, divine empowerment or call, utter destruction of enemies, and will of the deity accomplished—to …
