Charging, Aggregation, And Electrostatic Dispersion Of Radioactive And Nonradioactive Particles In The Atmosphere, Yong Ha Kim, Sotira Yiacoumi, Costas Tsouris

Faculty Publications

Electrostatic dispersion can significantly impact the microphysical behavior of charged particles and ions until reaching zero space charge. However, although radioactive particles can be strongly charged in air, the influence of electrostatic dispersion has been neglected in understanding their behavior. This study is aimed at investigating the time evolution of the charge and size distributions of radioactive and nonradioactive particles in air and developing simple approaches for applications. With processes involving charging, aggregation, and electrostatic dispersion, a comprehensive population balance model (PBM) has been developed to examine particle charge/size distribution dynamics. It is shown that compared to nonradioactive particles, the …

Families seeking asylum in the United States are often placed in detention centers after fleeing crime, violence, and government ineffectiveness in their countries. Migration brings more hardship, terror, and trauma. The cumulative psychological and social effects from detention need to be better understood. This exploratory study examines the effects of detention and family separation on immigrant children’s psychosocial wellbeing after released. We recruited 81 Central American children previously detained with their parents to assess their wellbeing since release. A third of the children had been separated from their parents during detention. Over a third of parents and less than a …

Estimating The Carbon Flux Of Argyropelecus Aculeatus Within The Gulf Of Mexico, Sidney R. Trimble Dec 2024

Estimating The Carbon Flux Of Argyropelecus Aculeatus Within The Gulf Of Mexico, Sidney R. Trimble

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Anthropogenic impacts have led to increased levels of anthropogenic carbon within the atmosphere and the world’s oceans. The Biological Carbon Pump (BCP) plays a key role in reducing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere and oceans by aiding in the export and sequestration of anthropogenic carbon. This occurs when carbon exchange between the atmosphere and the upper ocean takes place, and the carbon is then transferred down into the deep sea. Mesopelagic fishes may aid in this process of carbon transfer. Though the role of mesopelagic fishes is understudied in our world’s oceans, there are previous studies that focus …

Forage fishes are small bodied species that form a diverse functional group, serving as a primary food source for a wide range of marine predators. This group plays a significant ecological role through energy transfer to higher trophic levels. Gobiosoma robustum (Code Goby) is a substantive diet component of several recreationally significant juvenile sportfishes in Florida estuaries. While the thermal tolerance of this species may be inferred from observational data, the absolute physiological limitations of this species remain unknown. In this study, intermittent-flow respirometry and critical thermal maxima were used to determine the response of G. robustum to chronic and …

Masters Projects

Younger grades are beginning to look different as time goes by. With new laws in place, like No Child Left Behind, there is a higher demand for rigorous academics. Teachers have assessments and district provided curriculum to make sure to achieve within their school days. This push for academic rigor has led to less free-play in the younger grades resulting in more disruptive behaviors. Research has revealed the importance of Social-Emotional Learning within the classroom setting to reduce the disruptive behaviors and emotions. This project focuses on the impact of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) on disruptive behaviors. The author investigated different …

Prior research in manufacturing-related environments has indicated the existence of a high frequency of unplanned events. When not responded to efficiently, they can result in reduced financial efficiency and employee overwhelm. Through collection and analysis of interviews conducted with stakeholders in the manufacturing environment, a possible means of efficiently addressing unplanned events can be found or synthesized to help stakeholders navigate uncertainty in the manufacturing environment …

Combining Project Management Methods For Faster Software Delivery, Subhradeep Biswas Dec 2024

Combining Project Management Methods For Faster Software Delivery, Subhradeep Biswas

Harrisburg University Dissertations and Theses

The impact of the hybrid project management technique combined with lean principles in software organization is the main topic of the proposed thesis. The instability inherent in software projects has led to the rise in popularity of the agile approach. However, according to specialists in project management, an agile approach alone won't guarantee a project's success. When executing software projects, almost all project managers combine the agile approach with the waterfall methodology. Nevertheless, a number of investigations discovered that the hybrid strategy is frequently not failsafe. In this field of study, combining lean and hybrid project management is a topic …

Epigenetic Mechanisms And Senescence In Aging And Cancer, Alla Karpova Dec 2024

Epigenetic Mechanisms And Senescence In Aging And Cancer, Alla Karpova

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Aging is marked by the progressive decline of cellular and organ function. This process often manifests through DNA damage, epigenomic alterations, telomere shortening, and metabolic or mitochondrial dysfunction. As DNA damage and other stressors accumulate, cells take measures to prevent malignant transformation. One such measure is cellular senescence, a state of irreversible cell cycle arrest that halts the growth of pre-malignant cells. When cells are unable to enter senescence due to high levels of genomic alterations, they typically undergo apoptosis or necrosis. However, if mutations affect key driver genes, allowing cells to evade death, they may become malignant, continuing to …
