Reevaluating The Opportunity For Wind Energy In Kentucky: Advancing Technology, Changing Economics, And Generation Complementarity, Lawrence E. Holloway, Aron Patrick, Dan M. Ionel
Reevaluating The Opportunity For Wind Energy In Kentucky: Advancing Technology, Changing Economics, And Generation Complementarity, Lawrence E. Holloway, Aron Patrick, Dan M. Ionel
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Recent developments in wind turbine technology, new wind resource data, and new federal tax credits for renewable energy are increasing the suitability of wind electricity generation in Kentucky. In 2022, Kentucky had 68% of its electricity from coal and in 2023 was one of eight U.S. states with no utility-scale wind generation. In the past, the state has been viewed as being generally unsuitable for wind power generation. While wind is not the most economic resource in Kentucky, all states bordering the Commonwealth have wind power. Wind power generation in Kentucky appears increasingly likely in the coming decades to play …

This panel presentation highlights collaboration among CUNY libraries and LMS administrators to automate integration of library course reserves, research guides and other web-based services into Brightspace. The presentation begins discussing how learning tools interoperability (LTI) integration provides library resources to students at their point of need. It then describes the technical requirements to automate and customize the Springshare LTI library platform within Brightspace. The panel concludes with examples from several campuses demonstrating what this integration looks like.

Heterogeneous Knowledge Of Childhood Seizures And Epilepsy Care In Canadian Healthcare Providers: Identifying The Gaps, Michelle Kregel, Sherry Coulson, Emily Guarasci, Andrea Andrade
Paediatrics Publications
Epilepsy is the most common chronic neurological condition in children. Many barriers exist in early recognition which cause delay in care and impact quality of life. Some of these children require advanced treatments which are underutilized due to lack of education, awareness and referrals. Overall, childhood epilepsy is underdiagnosed and poorly understood by non-expert providers. We investigated awareness and knowledge about epilepsy from primary care providers via the quality of their referrals. We prospectively collected and examined all epilepsy related referrals to the Paediatric Neurology Division at Children’s Hospital in London, Ontario, Canada during a six-month period. We developed a …

An Analysis Of The Effects Of Soft Power On The Risk Of Foreign Direct Investment Projects, Kelly Montemayor
An Analysis Of The Effects Of Soft Power On The Risk Of Foreign Direct Investment Projects, Kelly Montemayor
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
As the world has become more interconnected due to the rapid expansion of trade and communication technologies, countries have been able to create a reputation based on their image instead of their military power. This attraction or soft power, has become a topic of discussion as many scholars have tried to define soft power and the effects it has on the world. This research study focuses on how a country’s soft power affects the foreign direct investment projects it participates in based on the level of soft power its home country has over the host country. This study examines criteria …

Background: Oral rehydration solution (ORS) is crucial in the management of diarrhoea. Until the early 2000s, the standard formulation of glucose-based ORS with a total osmolarity of 311 mmol/L was being used for this purpose. However, due to concerns about sodium levels and cases of hypernatremia, a low-osmolarity ORS solution (LORS) with an osmolarity of 245mmol/L or less was developed to replace the standard ORS. With this systematic review, we aimed to assess the effectiveness of LORS compared to standard ORS for the treatment of acute and persistent diarrhoea.
Methods: We comprehensively searched PubMed, CINAHL, the Cochrane Library, ClinicalTrials.gov, the …

Practice Problem: Nursing burnout is a significant problem with far-reaching consequences. High levels of stress, emotional exhaustion, and reduced job satisfaction among nurses contribute to poor patient outcomes, increased medical errors, and high turnover rates. There is a high prevalence of burnout among nurse executives, consequences of which include extreme stress, emotional anguish, and a desire to quit, which points to a larger problem with burnout affecting the nursing profession (Martin et al., 2023). Fostering resilience among nurses can help to mitigate these outcomes by enhancing physical, mental, and social health through building purpose, positive emotions, and effective stress management. …

Student campus protest has been a hallmark of US social movements for decades. Edited versions of these movements are lauded in university courses on historical social change. Yet a variety of commentators in traditional media, campus administration, and political administration display a calculated confusion when it comes to contemporary campus movements, particularly around Palestine. This article aims to clear up that confusion, outlining the protests and occupations that took place in spring 2024 on the campus of Portland State University and in its renamed Refaat Alareer Memorial Library, setting them in their national (and international) context, and outlining the violent …
Analyzing The Relationship Between Tree Canopy Coverage And Snowpack In The Great Salt Lake Watershed, Kyle J. Bird
Analyzing The Relationship Between Tree Canopy Coverage And Snowpack In The Great Salt Lake Watershed, Kyle J. Bird
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study examines the influence of tree canopy coverage, climate, and topography on snow water equivalent (SWE) within the Great Salt Lake Watershed. Using SNOTEL data, NLCD land use/land cover rasters, t-tests, and multiple linear regression (MLR), the study analyzed SWE variability in relation to canopy density, winter precipitation, elevation, temperature, and latitude. Initial t-tests showed significant differences in SWE between sites with canopy coverage below and above 70%, yet tree canopy was excluded as a significant predictor in the MLR model. Instead, SWE was primarily explained by mean winter precipitation, elevation, average winter high temperatures, and latitude. Additionally, canopy …

Search For Dyson Rings Around Pulsars: Unexpected Light Curves, Ogetay Kayali, Emir Haliki, Kubra Bas, Robert J. Nemiroff
Michigan Tech Publications
Finding Dyson rings around distant pulsars may involve identifying light-curve features that have not been previously identified. Previous studies covered the detection of a ring structure uniformly brightened by the central pulsar, mostly in infrared light. Here, more complex light curves are explored, which arise inherently from the pulsar beam spot’s commonly predicted superluminal speed. These speeds may cause multiple images of the pulsar’s spot on the Dyson ring to appear simultaneously to a distant observer, and so feature bright creation and annihilation events. Therefore, it is possible that even if Dyson ring structures had been observed previously, they might …
Toward More Impactful Higher Education Advisory Boards: Foundational Elements For Success, Kyle Barnhart
Toward More Impactful Higher Education Advisory Boards: Foundational Elements For Success, Kyle Barnhart
Masters Projects
This project examines what makes for a successful advisory board within a higher education institution. Advisory boards play an important role in higher education, bringing industry insights, alumni experience, community connections, and outside expertise on a range of topics. A core challenge of advisory boards is a lack of consistency in their structure and operation which can result in these groups being less than effective or even perfunctory. This is a missed opportunity to engage volunteers, leverage outside expertise, and build important external connections, and develop long-term advocates. Poorly managed and ineffective boards can also be a drain on resources …
Neurodivergent Experiences In Communication Sciences And Disorders Programs As Reflected In Reddit, Shadha Al Kalbani
Neurodivergent Experiences In Communication Sciences And Disorders Programs As Reflected In Reddit, Shadha Al Kalbani
Honors Theses
By definition, neurodivergent students are those whose brain function differs significantly from societal expectations (Walker, 2014). The term ‘neurodivergent’ is associated with the Neurodiversity Movement. Although the Neurodiversity Movement was spearheaded by the Autistic1 community, the term commonly includes other forms of neurodivergence such as ADHD and dyslexia. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of neurodivergent students in Communication Sciences Disorders (CSD) programs, where systematic data on their demographics and experience is relatively limited. Specifically, this study analysed posts from the online social media platform Reddit that are dedicated to the college experience of neurodivergent students …

What Is Known And Not Known About The Impact Of Social Media On Self-Esteem: Systematic Literature Review Of Research On Adolescents (2014-2024), Kailen Mokhantha-Sopraseuth
Honors Theses
Prior research has found social media can impact how users feel about themselves and can influence how individuals perceive the world around them. Due to the increase in adolescent usage of social media, a systematic literature review of research available through Western Michigan University’s library was conducted. This study was aimed at summarizing and critically evaluating research on the impact of social media use on adolescent’s self-esteem using a qualitative systematic literature review from the last decade, with some quantitative analysis. Specifically, this study examined 1) what methods of data collection was used, 2) research designs implemented, and 3) results …

A common tactic to estimate willingness-to-travel exploits variation in the relative proximity of consumers to supplier locations. The validity of these estimates relies on the exogeneity of that consumer-supplier distance. We argue that distance to suppliers is endogenous because suppliers strategically choose locations to target consumers; we introduce a novel instrument to address this form of endogeneity. Using geolocation data from millions of smartphones, we estimate consumer preferences for specific retail chains across income groups and regions. We show that accounting for distance endogeneity significantly alters willingness-to-travel measures. Contrary to the prevailing “retail apocalypse” narrative, we find that consumer surplus …
