Exploring The Linkages Between Social Impact Grantmaking & Social Innovation: Insights For Grantmaking Practices, Jodi Lockhart
Masters Projects
The discussion and search for more advanced societal wellness and public health is centuries old, yet data suggests that public health and social care systems continue to struggle. In pursuit of mitigating this broad array of challenges, both government and private philanthropic funders have prolifically used grantmaking as a funding mechanism. Within this quest for positive social impact, many funders have expressed interest in the emerging field of social innovation. This study seeks to examine the use of social innovation in the strategic grantmaking practices of funders in Colorado, exploring how these organizations are integrating social innovation into their funding …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Growing teratoma syndrome (GTS) is marked by the reduction in serum tumor markers, despite the growth of a benign mature teratomatous mass after chemotherapy treatment for germ cell tumors. Gliomatosis Peritonei (GP) is often seen with ovarian teratomas, involving the spread of mature glial tissue on the peritoneum. The coexistence of GP with GTS following treatment for ovarian immature teratoma (IMT) is particularly rare with about 20 cases reported thus far.Case: A 25-year-old patient underwent surgical removal of an adnexal mass. On paraffin pathology, she was deemed to have stage III A grade 3 ovarian IMT with parametrial involvement. …

Evaluation Of The Impact Of Heat Stress At Flowering On Spikelet Fertility And Grain Quality In Barley, Camilla Beate Hill, Tefera Angessa, Sharon Westcott, Lee-Anne Mcfawn, Hamid Shirdelmoghanloo, Yong Han, Chengdao Li
Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles
Against the backdrop of a warming climate, heat stress has become one of the most limiting factors to crop productivity and food security worldwide. The flowering stage is susceptible to high temperatures in cereal crops, leading to severe grain yield losses by decreasing fertility and seed-setting rate. Our objective was to (1) assess a global panel of 572 barley varieties with contrasting genetic backgrounds for various agronomic traits related to spikelet fertility and grain quality, (2) identify barley germplasm with superior spikelet fertility and seed set under extreme heat conditions, and (3) understand the relationship between spikelet fertility and grain …

Professional Practices (ART 399)
When you are first seeing my artwork, wanting it to bring some type of Joy. The main reason I make art is because it reminds me of when I was young, I’ve always had a creative mind. I loved creating things and my favorite classes to always go to was art. The initial reaction when seeing my art is it wouldn’t be what you would expect. Most people looking at it would see some similarities but at the same time sometimes my concepts don’t flow. The main similarity you see when you look at my art is how I use …

Professional Practices (ART 399)
My artwork consists of large self portraiture drawings and paintings. Exploring the amount of distortion I can create with my face and hands. The distortion of my body stems from the sexual assault I’ve experienced in my life. How their hands on me made me feel disconnected from my body and self. Living with that trauma that will continue to follow me, caused myself to not see me correctly or even feel like me. Maybe if I looked different it wouldn’t have happened. I also create work that has my partner as the subject instead of myself. He’s drawn to …

Professional Practices (ART 399)
The overall goal of my works is to tell the stories of the characters I have created and give my audience a glimpse into who the characters are and why they are the way that they are. I make pieces and characters based on the environment around me, specifically the plants and animals in my own backyard. My process starts in my current sketchbook. Sometimes characters get reused from a previous time in my life that I feel I could improve upon, characters designs will more likely than not change over the course of time. When I am satisfied with …
What Factors Contribute To Racial Disparities In Asthma Prevalence In The United States?, Ali Jones, Marc A. Garcia
What Factors Contribute To Racial Disparities In Asthma Prevalence In The United States?, Ali Jones, Marc A. Garcia
Population Health Research Brief Series
Asthma is strongly associated with the environmental factors in which one lives. Poor environmental factors, such as motor vehicle pollution and lack of emergency room access, lead to a higher prevalence of asthma among Black individuals than White individuals. This brief uses data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to highlight Black-White disparities in asthma from 2019-2021 and demonstrates how living in unhealthy conditions results in a higher burden of asthma in Black communities.

Workforce Profile Of Alternatively Certified Teachers In South Carolina For 2022–23, Brian Cartiff, Svetlana Dmitrieva, Angela Starrett
Reports
Alternatively certified teachers constitute a growing portion of public school educators in the US. This is a trend that is expected to continue, due to the declining enrollment in traditional teacher preparation programs across recent years.
As such, this report examines the profiles of alternatively certified teachers working in South Carolina public schools (those currently enrolled in alternative certification programs and those who have completed them). The analysis delves into the demographics and placements of these teachers and explores how their employment correlates with teacher attrition rates. Altogether, it offers preliminary insights into the roles of alternatively certified educators in …

Psychological Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Despite very high rates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) in autistic adults, the key psychosocial drivers of this phenomenon remain unknown. To investigate, we examined how lifetime stressor exposure and severity, which have been found to predict STB in non-autistic populations, related to STB in a multinational dataset of 226 autistic adults from the United Kingdom and Australia (67% female; Mage = 41.8, SD = 13.6, range = 19–73 years old). Results revealed that autistic men and women differ with respect to the count, severity, and type of stressors they experienced over the life course. Whereas autistic men …

African Women Custodians: Teaching, Toponymy And Tacit Reverie In Heritage Education, Tokie Laotan-Brown
African Women Custodians: Teaching, Toponymy And Tacit Reverie In Heritage Education, Tokie Laotan-Brown
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
This paper investigates the critical role of women in African cultures as guardians of cultural heritage. It explores their central function in transmitting traditional ecological knowledge and practices across generations through established pedagogical methods, toponymic knowledge systems (place-names within cultural landscapes), and the cultivation of tacit knowledge. The paper emphasizes the significance of women's contributions to environmental education, often overlooked or undervalued within Western scientific paradigms. This marginalization restricts access to resources and participation in decision-making processes. It argues for the integration of traditional knowledge systems, informed by women's expertise, into formal education and pedagogy. This inclusion serves to validate …
Lower Limb Prosthetics Impact On Social Participation, Kayla Jones, Zeida Gutierrez
Lower Limb Prosthetics Impact On Social Participation, Kayla Jones, Zeida Gutierrez
Fall 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium
Amputations can cause a lack of motivation which will hinder occupational performance and participation after limb loss (Şimsek et al., 2020). The fit of an individual’s prosthetic is crucial to allow for an increase in participation (Diment et al., 2022). Occupational therapists treat the limb loss community but there is little evidence in the literature to support social participation with the use of a prosthetic limb. There is a need for new research to better understand how the use of a prosthetic can impact an individual’s social participation.
