Food systems and food-related policies influence food consumption, dietary patterns, and human and environmental health. Consumers play a vital role in enhancing health and sustainability through their purchasing choices. To identify and cluster food purchasing behaviours and map relationships, a cross-sectional survey was conducted across Ireland with a sample size of 957 adults. Two-step cluster analysis, generalised linear models, and recursive partitioning and regression trees were used to elucidate adherence to identified food purchasing behavioural clusters. Three clusters (‘food quality’, ‘taste’, and ‘price’) were identified based on food purchasing priorities and statistically categorised. ‘Food quality’ members were significantly less likely …

Syntactic processing and verbal working memory are both essential components to sentence comprehension. Nonetheless, the separability of these systems in the brain remains unclear. To address this issue, we performed causal-inference analyses based on lesion and connectome network mapping using MRI and behavioural testing in two groups of individuals with chronic post-stroke aphasia. We employed a rhyme judgement task with heavy working memory load without articulatory confounds, controlling for the overall ability to match auditory words to pictures and to perform a metalinguistic rhyme judgement, isolating the effect of working memory load (103 individuals). We assessed non-canonical sentence comprehension, isolating …
The Learner's Experience Using Augmented Reality, Michael Lionel Atkinson
The Learner's Experience Using Augmented Reality, Michael Lionel Atkinson
Theses and Dissertations
Augmented reality (AR) is a promising learning tool that has the potential to improve learning experiences in unique ways. While AR has been extensively studied in terms of learning outcomes, relatively little has been researched about the qualitative aspect of the learner experience and how that may inform better instruction. This multi-article, journal-ready dissertation addresses this gap. The first article is a review of the literature on what researchers have learned about AR in learning, systematically identifying six areas that appear salient yet underrepresented in the literature. The second article expands further upon this theme by conducting a qualitative study …
Assessing Client Satisfaction In University Counseling: Factor Structure Of A Survey Developed For A Private, Religious-Affiliated Institution, Wai Man Cheng
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the factor structure of a client satisfaction survey developed by BYU Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). The survey included (a) universal, (b) individual, (c) couple, and (d) group subscales. Only the universal and individual subscales were analyzed. The couple and group subscales were excluded due to limited sample sizes. For the universal subscale, the analysis supported a first-order model with three factors: (a) clarity, (b) cultural competence, and (c) progress. For the individual subscale, the analysis supported a second-order model. Three first-order factors including (a) symptom relief, (b) insight and awareness, and (c) guidance and coping skills, …

Development Of Financial Management Skills: A Guidebook For Caregivers Of Autistic Children, Marcie Balleza, Steven M. Gerardi, Angela Blackwell
Fall 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium
Autistic children face challenges to living independently, including learning to manage finances. Caregivers of autistic children must develop in their care recipients the financial skills to live independently. A lack of educational resources on how to teach financial management skills can impede the development of independent living skills in autistic children. Caregivers of autistic children lack the education and training that is necessary to teach financial management skills to autistic children to prepare them for transition to adulthood. Caregivers of autistic children do not know how to help their child learn money management skills in preparation for the transition to …

Enhancing Ob Healthcare: Impact Of Black Nurse Representation, Devi Wolfe-Reese
Honors Capstones
Increasing Black nurse representation in obstetrics (OB) care is crucial for improving maternal and infant health outcomes, reducing health disparities, and building trust between patients and providers. Research shows that diverse healthcare teams lead to better patient outcomes, including lower mortality rates and higher patient satisfaction. Black nurses bring critical cultural competence to OB care, strengthening patient-provider relationships and ensuring that care is tailored to the unique needs of Black families. A more diverse nursing workforce promotes better collaboration, enhances inclusivity, and contributes to a more equitable healthcare system overall.
To achieve these goals, healthcare institutions must prioritize diversity by …
Special Education Teachers' Perspective On Burnout When Legal Counsel Is Part Of The Iep Team: A Phenomenological Study, Erin M. Squibb
Special Education Teachers' Perspective On Burnout When Legal Counsel Is Part Of The Iep Team: A Phenomenological Study, Erin M. Squibb
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand teacher perceptions of special education teacher burnout rates when legal counsel or parent advocates are Individualized Education Program (IEP) team members in public schools in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. The two theories guiding this study are the social cognitive theory and the job demands-resources model. Special education teachers are leaving the field at an alarming rate. It is essential to understand burnout specifically related to special education teachers. This study determined how fourteen special educators with varying years of teaching experience described their experience when an advocate or legal counsel was …

Corazón De Maíz Un Tributo A Los Pueblos Mayas, Patricia López
Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis
English Abstract:
Corazón de Maíz gathers the stories and recipes for traditional Maya cooking in the regions of Huehuetenango, and is designed to promote the survival of the culinary system of the grand-mothers, and the food that they prepared with love for the whole family. This “culinary novel” contains myths, legends, stories of the origin of some foods, cooking tech-niques and methods. The foods prepared in the altiplano region developed from millenary traditions, the Hispanic invasion, the ravages of climate change bringing droughts and plagues that destroy life, and the various consequences and influences of migration. For the Maya, corn …

Assessing Spatial Distribution And Quantification Of Native Trees In Saskatchewan's Prairie Landscape Using Remote Sensing Techniques, Elham Shafeian, Bryan J. Mood, Kenneth W. Belcher, Colin P. Laroque
Aspen Bibliography
The importance of trees in non-forest landscapes has been the focus of only a few studies. However, these trees provide many important ecosystem services. In this study, we mapped and quantified these trees using Sentinel-2 (S2) and very high-resolution (VHR) Google satellite imagery without any field campaigns. We performed a Random Forest (RF) classification to map the spatial distribution of native trees in different scenarios. The optimal model showed an overall accuracy and kappa of 0.99 and 0.98, respectively. We mapped 40,500 km2 of tree cover, including native tree cover (approximately 29,565 km2≈10.5%), excluding plantations, regional and …

The Involvement Of World Bank In Global Health: A Literature Review, Ahmed Saeed Alqassmi
Whittier Scholars Program
My project explores the intersection of technology, governance, and global health through the World Bank's effect on national health policies. Specifically, it examines how the Bank's financial instruments, knowledge dissemination, and governance reforms shape the health systems of growing countries. Drawing on contemporary and historical cases, the project critiques the economic-driven model, repeatedly prioritizing cost-efficiency over equity of health, showing the tensions between global financial imperatives and the need for local health. The project emphasizes the World Bank's growing role in the global health landscape by examining key reports such as the introduction of global health trust funds and Investing …
A Wīnak Perspective On Cosmovisíon Maya And Eco-Justice Education, Arcia Tecun
A Wīnak Perspective On Cosmovisíon Maya And Eco-Justice Education, Arcia Tecun
Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis
This article responds to questions of relational ethics in Indigenous mobility with a critically conscious approach to cosmovisíon Maya in Soonkahni (Salt Lake Valley). An urban and mobile Mayan positionality, identified as Wīnak, guides an analysis of complex Indigenous experiences, and possibilities found in Eco-Justice. The limits from the prevailing and dominant colonial logics of conservation and environmentalism are re-imagined through Indigenous approaches to ‘Earth Wellbeing’. The application of critically conscious cosmovisíon Maya reveals a simultaneous challenge to systems of power, and to formations of an Indigenous relational ethic that is both locally meaningful and globally relevant. This essay concludes …
Revisiting Men Of Maize: Historical Truths, Literary Distortions, And Asturias In Today’S Guatemala, Elaine Elliott
Revisiting Men Of Maize: Historical Truths, Literary Distortions, And Asturias In Today’S Guatemala, Elaine Elliott
Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis
In 2024, a renewed appreciation for the Guatemalan Nobel Prize winner Miguel Ángel Asturias is taking place to mark the 50th anniversary of Asturias’ death. This essay examines the historical and literary context of the author’s groundbreaking novel Hombres de maíz (Men of Maize), and the book’s portrayal of indigenous Maya resistance against ladino landowners in Guatemala. Evidence indicates that Asturias obtained his views of ladino – Maya conflict from historic land conflicts in Ilom, Chajul. Asturias distorted the events, but his book inspired a generation of revolutionaries, some of whom organized and fought in the Ixil region and Ilom. …

Enhancing Cybersecurity Strategies Through Automated Cti Extraction, Risk Prioritization, And Privacy-Conscious Information Sharing, Spencer Rian Massengale
Theses and Dissertations
Cybersecurity operations require the ability to collect and analyze large amounts of cyber threat intelligence (CTI) to assess risks and formulate defensive strategies against emerging threats. This task has become increasingly complex due to the rapid evolution of cyber threats and the growing volume of unstructured, natural-language CTI sources. The scale of data and analysis needed to utilize CTI effectively far exceeds humans' manual capacity, especially for organizations with limited resources. This research focuses on leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) and machine learning techniques to enhance CTI extraction, risk assessment, and data sharing. We utilized LLMs to automate the extraction …
New Insights Into Supradense Matter From Dissecting Scaled Stellar Structure Equations, Bao-Jun Cai, Bao-An Li
New Insights Into Supradense Matter From Dissecting Scaled Stellar Structure Equations, Bao-Jun Cai, Bao-An Li
Faculty Publications
The strong-field gravity in general relativity (GR) realized in neutron stars (NSs) renders the equation of state (EOS) P(ε) of supradense neutron star matter to be essentially nonlinear and refines the upper bound for ϕ≡P/ε to be much smaller than the special relativity (SR) requirement with linear EOSs, where P andεare respectively the pressure and energy density of the system considered. Specifically, a tight bound ϕ ≲ 0.374 is obtained by perturbatively anatomizing the intrinsic structures of the scaled Tolman–Oppenheimer–Volkoff (TOV) equations without using any input nuclear EOS. New insights gained from this novel analysis provide EOS-model-independent constraints on the …

Modeling Immune Cell Dynamics And Ecm Remodeling In Tendon Injury, Levi Gingerich
Modeling Immune Cell Dynamics And Ecm Remodeling In Tendon Injury, Levi Gingerich
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
Tendon injuries involve complex biological processes, including inflammation, cell recruitment, and extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling. This study employs a systems biology approach to model the dynamic interplay between immune cells, cytokines, and the ECM during tendon repair. Ordinary differential equations (ODEs) are used to simulate key phases of healing under physiological and pathological stress scenarios, emphasizing the critical roles of macrophage polarization and ECM turnover. The model reveals distinct cytokine and cellular dynamics under varying stress intensities and durations, highlighting the detrimental effects of prolonged inflammation and excessive ECM degradation in pathological conditions. These findings highlight the importance of balancing …

AU Experiments: Please confirm that all heading levels are represented correctly comparing diploids with polyploids and in single : grassland sites show that nitrogen and/or phosphorus availability influences plant growth and community composition dependent on genome size; specifically, plants with larger genomes grow faster under nutrient enrichments relative to those with smaller genomes. However, it is unknown if these effects are specific to particular site localities with speciifc plant assemblages, climates, and historical contingencies. To determine the generality of genome size-dependent growth responses to nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization, we combined genome size and species abundance data from 27 coordinated grassland …

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation consists of three theoretical analyses. In the first chapter "Who Takes Responsibility and Preventive Action? Centralized vs. Decentralized Risk Management in an Organization with Heterogeneous Agents," we investigate the optimal allocation of risk management responsibilities in organizations with multiple agents possessing heterogeneous preventive action costs. Extending the principal-agent framework to a multi-agent context, we analyze how a manager and agents choose preventive efforts to mitigate risks. Two scenarios are considered: (1) centralized risk management, where the manager bears all expected damages, and (2) decentralized risk management, where agents bear their own damages. Our findings show that centralized risk …

It's Going To Be Okay: Experiences And Perceptions Of People Who Seek Reassurance At Work, Liana Bernard
Dissertations and Theses
This study examined the experiences and perceptions of people who seek reassurance at work using a mixed methods (focus groups and experimental) approach. Reassurance-seeking is an attempt to elicit supportive communication from another person to help one reduce experienced anxiety. First, using focus groups with 32 participants, this study found that people seeking reassurance at work develop complex cognitive structures to reduce the prospective negative impacts of reassurance-seeking behaviors, particularly for those with marginalized identities. Then, in a 3x2 between-person experimental design in which employee gender and reassurance-seeking were manipulated, participants read a transcript of an interaction between an employee …
