In Philippine society, media, particularly romance films, shapes and reinforces audiences’ perspectives, perpetuating preconceived notions and stereotypical beliefs. However, there is a lack of textual analysis within Filipino films, especially regarding female representation in media. Hence, our study explores the portrayal of female main characters in romance films. Textual film analysis, grounded in Carl Jung’s Jungian archetypes and Jean Shinoda Bolen’s female archetypes in media, was implemented on the six Filipino highest-grossing romance films from 2014 until 2019. This analysis, further supported by a feminist lens, aimed to identify the character portrayal and archetypes of the main female characters in …

A New Form Of Soft Supersymmetry Breaking?, Scott Chapman
A New Form Of Soft Supersymmetry Breaking?, Scott Chapman
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Starting with a supersymmetric U(N) × U(N) gauge theory built in N = 1 superspace, a nonsupersymmetric theory is obtained by “twisting” the gauginos into a different representation of the group than the gauge bosons. Despite the fact that this twisting breaks supersymmetry, it is still possible to construct an action that is holomorphic and invariant to local “twisted” gauge transformations in superspace. It is conjectured that these two properties may allow the theory to be free of quadratic divergences to all orders, despite a lack of supersymmetry. An explicit calculation shows that the theory is free of quadratic divergences …

Early Detection Of Amniotic Fluid Embolism Leading To Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Prior To Cardiac Arrest, Enad Haddad, Hamza Muhammadzai, Shayan Iqbal Khan, Angad Bedi, Rajesh Patel
Abington Jefferson Health Papers
Amniotic fluid embolism is a life-threatening peripartum condition with high morbidity and mortality rates. It is defined as the passage of fetal material into the maternal circulation which elicits a multisystem reaction that can lead to disseminated intravascular coagulopathy and severe hemodynamic instability. Despite established diagnostic criteria for amniotic fluid embolism, its identification relies heavily on clinical judgment, and early diagnosis is key to patient survival. In several cases, early utilization of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support has provided a salvage approach to correct cardiopulmonary collapse. Herein, we present a case of successful application of venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in a …

Platform: A Journal of Engineering (PAJE)
Oil palm frond (OPF) is a form of clean energy with a strong potential to generate electricity due to its abundance and consistent availability throughout the year. However, the pruned OPF is usually laid scattered on the ground throughout the vast areas of palm oil plantations. The logistics of handling pruned OPF pose a low efficiency of the supply chain system and may involve high delivery costs due to key factors such as high transportation cost of a low bulk density material and high labour cost. The optimal way of handling biomass prior to utilisation in a gasification plant remains …

Dynamic prediction models capable of retaining accuracy by evolving over time could play a significant role for monitoring disease progression in clinical practice. In biomedical studies with long-term follow up, participants are often monitored through periodic clinical visits with repeat measurements until an occurrence of the event of interest (e.g. disease onset) or the study end. Acknowledging the dynamic nature of disease risk and clinical information contained in the longitudinal markers, we propose an innovative concordance-assisted learning algorithm to derive a real-time risk stratification score. The proposed approach bypasses the need to fit regression models, such as joint models of …

Tanzania Journal of Science
This study extends the previous work by Kitengeso et al. (2018) by investigating unsteady convective boundary layer flow, incorporating magnetic fields, chemical reactions, radiation, and variable fluid properties over the inclined plate. The boundary layer and Boussinesq approximations are used to derive the magnetohydrodynamic flow equations. Thereafter, the equations are transformed into similarity form using similarity variables and then solved using the 4th order Runge - Kutta method. The key parameters such as the magnetic parameter, chemical reaction rate, variable fluid properties, unsteadiness, convection, and radiation parameter significantly affect flow behavior over an inclined plane. It was found that increasing …
