Two public health crises that the United States are contending with are diabetes and the prevalence of opioid overdoses, both of which have a significant impact on communities nationwide. Inequities in social conditions contribute to health disparities amidst these diabetes and opioid overdose public health crises nationally and locally. To address these health inequities in Indianapolis, Indiana, the the Purdue University Center for Health Excellence, Quality and Innovation (CHEQI) shaped relationships through their CHAMP (Community Health Access Model Partnerships) services with local food pantries and homeless shelters, providing Indianapolis residents pre-diabetes screening and resources and convenient access to and education …

Toxic Waste Dumps And Intersectionality, Kaitlyn Vasilko Dec 2024

Toxic Waste Dumps And Intersectionality, Kaitlyn Vasilko

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

Beginning in 2023, I started conducting environmental sociology research in Northwest Indiana communities because I wanted to apply what I had been learning in my sociology and behavioral science courses to real community problems. I that found toxic waste dumps (waste dumps that contain waste that is hazardous and require mandates established environmental regulations to ensure public safety) are disproportionately located in Northwest Indiana communities of color and poor whites, and I uncovered severe negative health effects that result from toxic waste dumps, in addition to the inequality faced by the populations impacted. I then conducted interviews in the community …

Wildlife Ambassadors, Carissa Lukac, Ibrahim Bhutta, Sunishka Deshpande, Amogh Jani

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

Students at Purdue University are largely unaware of conservation efforts and research being done by both their fellow students and local organizations. This is why under the guidance of our mentor and as a part of the HIFI Lab, our group, the Wildlife Ambassadors, has created a website meant to push ecological efforts at Purdue University. This is done through the use of animal ambassadors, including but not limited to a wolf at Wolf Park, a local organization with which this project has been conducted in correspondence. This website will integrate and display the work of over three dozen other …

The Hoosier Slide: Promoting Engagement With Environment, Kayla Vasilko Dec 2024

The Hoosier Slide: Promoting Engagement With Environment, Kayla Vasilko

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

With unsustainable production models and a plethora of other damaging activities, humans’ strain on the environment has made it impossible to assume that the planet’s ecosystem will sustain future generations (WWF, 2018); our response to this crisis will impact current and future generations and all other species on Earth (Global Stewards, 2022; United Nations Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, 2022). To make a difference, education about the problem needs to be furthered. I worked with the PNW Westville Warriors and the Michigan City Lubeznik Center for the Arts (a community center dedicated to offering programming that balances joy with critical thinking, with …

Through introspection, the essay progresses to examine the paradox of publicly funded but inaccessible science, which often fails to engage with community needs and priorities. The essay underscores the importance of inclusivity and diverse representation in scientific …

Aboard The Giant Clam: Ramon Muzones's Maritime Historicization Of The Nation, Winton Lou G. Ynion Dec 2024

Aboard The Giant Clam: Ramon Muzones's Maritime Historicization Of The Nation, Winton Lou G. Ynion

Kritika Kultura

Philippine literature scholarship is currently interested in decentering the discourse of nation-building from the capital to the periphery, but least often is attention given to the very geography that makes these communities marginalized. Habitually, multiculturalism and multilingualism have been convenient explanations for why it is difficult for the Philippines to come up with a “national literature” and a paradigm for imagining a nation. This essay centers on this neglected aspect, casting a novel written by a marginalized author in a vernacular language – the Margosatubig (1946) by Ramon Muzones. Three prime objectives guided the navigation of this paper: (1) to …

From Nostalgia To Nirvana: A Buddhist Epistemological Approach To Diasporic Literary Forms, Carlos V. Reyes Dec 2024

From Nostalgia To Nirvana: A Buddhist Epistemological Approach To Diasporic Literary Forms, Carlos V. Reyes

Kritika Kultura

Like the diasporian, the Buddhist knows the displacement from home to homelessness. Practicing, the Buddhist makes homelessness her home. Writing, the diasporic writer (re)constructs a movable home in words. Using the Buddhist five thesis on form, this paper attempts to apply these principles to the notion of diaspora. Five new insights to the experience of diaspora are gained from this approach. The method is then applied to the diasporic Filipino poet Jose Garcia Villa’s poem “Before, One, becomes, One.” In conclusion, it is argued that the Buddhist perspective offers a new critique useful in understanding the challenges of the postmodern …

People Power As Immanent Collectivity: Re-Imagining The Miracle Of The 1986 Edsa Revolution As Divine Justice, Fernando Gonzaga Dec 2024

People Power As Immanent Collectivity: Re-Imagining The Miracle Of The 1986 Edsa Revolution As Divine Justice, Fernando Gonzaga

Kritika Kultura

The Philippine People Power Revolution (EDSA) was remarkable for its non-aggressive overthrow of the Marcos dictatorship. The spontaneity and creativity of the people to answer the summons to defend dissonant army troops contrasts with the administrative efficiency and armed might of the military army. The people acted as a collectivity, with its own collective power, opposing the military. This non-aggressive collective power was rooted in a distinctive Filipino culture and religiosity that hailed the EDSA Revolution as a miracle of divine justice.

Grafting Philosophy To The Tagalog Prefix Ka, Rainier A. Ibana

Kritika Kultura

This also analyzes the development of Filipino society by the way the prefix “ka” was used especially during the Philippine Revolution and its present-day significance.

Refusing Subjects And (Dis)Owning America In Asian American Studies, Allan Punzalan Isaac Dec 2024

Refusing Subjects And (Dis)Owning America In Asian American Studies, Allan Punzalan Isaac

Kritika Kultura

Given the myriad historical and cultural trajectories of Asian America as a political coalition, Asian American Studies continually interrogates the terms of its coalitional unity as it foregrounds and theorizes “difference.” The challenge for Asian American Studies is to question identity with nation as the endpoint to anti-racist politics in order to create a space for theoretical inquiries of belonging beyond nation and racial identity to foreground other ways of imagining affinity, communities, and political alliances.

"Pedagogic Invasion": The Thomasites In Occupied Philippines, Dinah Roma-Sianturi Dec 2024

"Pedagogic Invasion": The Thomasites In Occupied Philippines, Dinah Roma-Sianturi

Kritika Kultura

The early education of the Philippines by American voluntary teachers (the Thomasites) is often hailed as a laudatory project. However, education can be a deceptive gift. The ethnographic writings of the Thomasite teachers, like Mary Fee’s A Woman’s Impressions of the Philippines, reveal that these well-meaning American teachers had their own colonial opinion of their Filipino students. Perhaps unwittingly, the Thomasite teachers were still part of the American colonial education policy. Most especially, the memoir writings reveal a perception of Filipino males as effeminate and childlike, an opinion that did much to legitimize the American colonial mandate.

Ottoman clay smoking pipes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were found abundantly in the excavation, while only a few narghile heads …

The finds included pottery, glass vessels, metal objects and seashells. The course of the seawalls in the Yafo harbor moved westward over …
