Sankofa In Action: Reclaiming Our Future, Adisa Preston

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

Pan-Africanism has been one of the responses to the systematic and brutal efforts by colonial powers to negate the worth and humanity of African peoples. Emerging in the Caribbean and the United States in the 19th-century, it flowered with the independence movements of the 20th. Historian Kwame Anthony Appiah defines Pan-Africanism as “a political project calling for the unification of all Africans into a single African state to which those in the African diaspora can return” (Appiah 1992, 174).

Pan-Africanism sought to heal the catastrophic ruptures of slavery, throw off the shackles of colonialism, and to fight the racist ideologies …

The Burden Of Birth: Racialized Margins Of Care In Washington, D.C., Beya D. Hull

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

The United States has shockingly high rates of maternal mortality in which Black women bear a disproportionate burden of pregnancy related deaths. In D.C., the nation's capital, Black women account for 90% of pregnancy associated deaths, despite comprising less than half of the population. This disparity is a result of systemic medical racism, geographical barriers, and a lack of available culturally reverent care. Community-based collectives have emerged to fill in the gaps left by the healthcare system by providing essential services to underserved communities, specifically Black women. These organizations have proven the potential of ‘non-traditional’ healthcare models to change the …

Weaving Resistance: Indigenous And Mestizé Women In Peru’S Political Uprisings, Isabella Benjamin-Quintana

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

This qualitative research paper investigates how race, gender, and political agency intersect in the lived experiences of Peruvian Indigenous and Mestizé women as they engage in political organizing and protest. This paper focuses on their roles, perspectives, and experiences during the 2022–2023 popular uprisings in Peru, highlighting the unique challenges and contributions of these women in a period of intense social and political upheaval. This paper first uncovers what catalyzed these movements into action, particularly after the impeachment of Peru’s former President, Pedro Castillo. Then this paper will explore race and gender construction in Peru, through pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial …

The March Toward Indian Black Solidarity, Tara Marella Weber

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

This essay explores Indian Americans’ nuanced identity, privilege, and historical relationship to Black Americans. Today, Black and Indian American racial identities are often isolated from one another due to the effects of White Supremacy and Anti-Blackness within the Indian American diaspora. This paper assumes that complicity and conflict are not the end, but anti-racism and solidarity are possible within the diaspora. The paper will begin with a brief explanation of terms and phrases concerning my paper. I will attempt to answer two major research questions: What systems were put into place by White Supremacist Institutions to position Indian Americans as …

Architectures Of Solidarity: The Worker Cooperative Movement In Chicago, Katherine Norquist

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

This article analyzes the worker cooperative landscape in Chicago, defining both the historical roots of the movement and the current barriers and supports faced by worker-owners. The paper takes two approaches. First, I compile existing research related to worker cooperatives, labor history, and the solidarity economy in order to trace the roots of Chicago's present-day worker cooperative landscape. Secondly, to more specifically delineate the supports and barriers currently encountered by worker co-ops, I conducted descriptive interviews with several members of Chicago-based cooperative incubation and worker rights organizations. Thematic analysis of their comments helped me to outline certain factors at play …

Controlling Knowledge And Critiquing Systems: The Florida Education System, Camille C. Samuel

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

This research paper analyzes the way white nationalism’s impact on the public education system particularly in the South [of the United States], specifically in Florida. The primary focus will involve the discussion pertaining to racial history and how it is taught. In order to effectively address this issue, we must compare the past to the present and how, unfortunately, history is repeating itself. The paper includes a deep dive into Florida’s state history as well as the personal experiences conducted through an interview of myself and my father, who was a student within the Florida public education system and has …

Contrasting Ideologies Of Schooling In The United States, Dalia Davidson Dec 2024

Contrasting Ideologies Of Schooling In The United States, Dalia Davidson

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities

Schools can be a mirror of society and the drivers of social change (Durkheim 1951). The contrasting ideologies of reproducing and resisting social hierarchies shapes public schooling in the United States. Yet, teachers, administrators, and curriculum writers often take an ahistorical approach to solving inequalities in schools. For my paper, I used a historical analysis, literature review and my experience interning in public schools to contextualize the contrasting ideologies of schooling and the role they play in shaping current outcomes of public education. I argue that when students of color are struggling in school, teachers are conditioned to blame families …

Being an Industrial and Systems Engineering Student with a foot in volunteer work, I have seen how ISYE can be used to optimize industry and systems that companies have in place, and figured its processes could also be applied to look into the systems being used to solve the homelessness crisis. In this paper, I plan to discuss the data and statistics behind homelessness, the solutions currently in place, how ISYE is currently being used and how it can be applied more efficiently, as well as explore how we as engineering students and as a society can use our education …

Vaccines On The Move And The War On Polio, Laura Muñoz-Blanc, Federico Fabio Frattini Dec 2024

Vaccines On The Move And The War On Polio, Laura Muñoz-Blanc, Federico Fabio Frattini

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The rising number of refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs) presents new challenges for vaccine distribution and the spread of diseases. How do forcibly displaced population inflows affect infectious diseases incidence in host communities? Can a policy intervention that vaccinates children during their migration mitigate the impacts? To answer these questions, we examine the Pakistani mass internal displacement from the conflict-affected Federally Administered Tribal Areas in 2008. Using a difference-in-differences approach, we compare new polio cases in districts near and far from the conflict zone before and after 2008. The spatial distribution of districts relative to the historical region of …

Stress And Trauma-Related Concerns Among Law Enforcement, James Hughes Dec 2024

Stress And Trauma-Related Concerns Among Law Enforcement, James Hughes

Master of Arts in Human Services

Law enforcement personnel work in environments with routine exposure to high stress and trauma which can lead to increased risk for mental health conditions such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The purpose of this study was to learn about the prevalence and effects of PTSD and related mental health issues among law enforcement (LE) officers and how psychological issues are managed within the LE system. An explanatory sequential mixed methods design strategy was used that involved collecting quantitative data first and then explaining the results with in-depth follow-up qualitative data. In the first quantitative phase of the study, data was …

Constructing The Communal Body: Literary Topographies Of Underclass And Working-Class Neighborhoods In Modern Osaka (1933-1960), Ran Wei Dec 2024

Constructing The Communal Body: Literary Topographies Of Underclass And Working-Class Neighborhoods In Modern Osaka (1933-1960), Ran Wei

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When literary scholars examine narratives about Osaka, they have largely focused on the relationship between Osaka and Tokyo or the representations of Osaka in the national imagination. The approach tends to neglect the role that minority groups play in creating Osaka as a city of local cosmopolitanism. Centering on how Osaka writers have represented four underclass and working-class neighborhoods in the city, this dissertation scrutinizes how the narratives complicate the images of Osaka constructed by the national government and challenge the official narrative of a homogeneous Japan. Despite Osaka’s changing position within the nation-state, its importance as a home for …

Early Host Defense Against Virus Infections, Søren R. Paludan, Thomas Pradeu, Andreas Pichlmair, K. Brad Wray, Jacob Giehm Mikkelsen, David Olagnier, Trine H. Mogensen

Presidential Fellows Articles and Research

Early host defense eliminates many viruses before infections are established while clearing others so they remain subclinical or cause only mild disease. The field of immunology has been shaped by broad concepts, including the pattern recognition theory that currently dominates innate immunology. Focusing on early host responses to virus infections, we analyze the literature to build a working hypothesis for the principles that govern the early line of cellular antiviral defense. Aiming to ultimately arrive at a criteria-based theory with strong explanatory power, we propose that both controlling infection and limiting inflammation are key drivers for the early cellular antiviral …

Black Like Me: Black College Student Perceptions Of Racially Similar College Presidents, David V. Tolliver Iii, Michael T. Miller, Jennifer M. Miles

Journal of Research on the College President

There is a strong interest in higher education to enroll a diverse student body, including groups from historically underrepresented populations. This is particularly true within the Black American community, where Black women have increased their presence in higher education yet Black men continue to account for only a small fraction of all college enrollment. To help increase the enrollment of Black men, some institutions have explored and put into place mentoring programs and have looked to symbolically demonstrate that higher education is a welcoming place by spotlighting college presidents who share similar demographic characteristics. The current study was designed to …

The Politics Of 9/11 Memory At Ground Zero And Shanksville: How Two National Memorials Were Debated, Negotiated, And Created, Emily Mundt

History Student Work

On the morning of September 11th, 2001, four United Airlines flights took off on the East Coast bound for California. Each plane carried passengers, crew, and...undetected hijackers. With four hijacked planes, two crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, one crashed into the Pentagon, and the other crashed into a rural field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. September 11th, 2001, has become known as 9/11 — the day many of us would never forget. Those old enough to remember seeing the loss of buildings and bodies unfold live on television on that day created individual memories of 9/11. But …

Improving Immunization Rates In Children Under Two Years Of Age In Linn County, Kansas Through Nursing Education, Heather L. Webber

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

Immunizations are one of the most beneficial preventive health measures available to children under two years of age. Failing to receive these preventative immunizations during these crucial years could result in the child developing serious diseases that may lead to long term disability or even be fatal. By increasing immunization rates, children will be more protected against common childhood diseases which will allow them to grow and thrive. The purpose of this scholarly project was to identify ways to improve vaccination rates in children under two years of age at specific clinics in Linn County, Kansas, using healthcare professional education. …

Improving Air Force Nursing Deployment Readiness

Abstract

Background. Air Force nurses must be prepared for deployment to support military missions on short notice. During deployments, they may be asked to practice in demanding and austere wartime environments. The required competencies for deployment include the care of multi-trauma patients, mass casualty care, and military-specific skills.

Problem. Air Force nurses are required to maintain an annual Comprehensive Medical Readiness Program (CMRP) checklist, a list of clinical skills based on their nursing specialty. Assessing and maintaining deployment readiness is an ongoing challenge. The Air Force does not currently use any …
