Toward A Better Understanding Of Mail Balloting: The Case Of U.S. Labor Union-Representation Elections, Rafael Gely, Leonard Bierman, Timothy Chandler
Louisiana Law Review
The issue of how people vote in elections is important and timely. This Article examines this issue from the perspective of whether people vote by mail—i.e., mail balloting—or in person on a designated election day—i.e., in-person voting. It explores the pros and cons of mail balloting versus in-person voting from a general political perspective and in the context of elections for labor union representation in the United States. It presents heretofore unreported data on the use of mail balloting in union-representation elections. It then draws lessons from these data concerning how mail balloting—which has increased in use since the COVID-19 …

Organic Alkalinity Distributions, Characteristics, And Application To Carbonate System Calculations In Estuarine And Coastal Systems, Christopher W. Hunt, Joseph Salisbury, Xuewu Liu, Robert H. Byrne
Organic Alkalinity Distributions, Characteristics, And Application To Carbonate System Calculations In Estuarine And Coastal Systems, Christopher W. Hunt, Joseph Salisbury, Xuewu Liu, Robert H. Byrne
Faculty Publications
The capacity of aquatic systems to buffer acidification depends on the sum contributions of various chemical species to total alkalinity (TA). Major TA contributors are inorganic, with carbonate and bicarbonate considered the most important. However, growing evidence shows that many rivers, estuaries, and coastal waters contain dissolved organic molecules with charge sites that create organic alkalinity (OrgAlk). This study describes the first comparison of (1) OrgAlk distributions and (2) acid–base properties in contrasting estuary-plume systems: the Pleasant (Maine, USA) and the St. John (New Brunswick, CA). The substantial concentrations of OrgAlk in each estuary were sometimes not conservative with salinity …
A Mechanistic Study Of Silicon Nanocrystal Formation Via Solid State Synthesis, Katherine Mccarthy Weinfurter
A Mechanistic Study Of Silicon Nanocrystal Formation Via Solid State Synthesis, Katherine Mccarthy Weinfurter
Dissertations and Theses
Silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) show promising physiochemical properties that could be used in industrial applications. The production of SiNCs through solid-state synthesis is ideal due to relatively low cost of equipment and chemical reagents, as well as the ability to scale-up production. A widely known and commonly used precursor previously used in solid-state synthesis for SiNCs, hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSiO1.5), was discontinued in chemical manufacturing, which has led to researching alternative precursors (or starting materials). We have identified that there is a gap of knowledge related to producing these precursors, as well as the mechanistic understanding of the chemical reactions …
Schools Apart: Curricular Stratification Across School Socioeconomic Compositions And Implications For Educational Inequality In The Us, Daniel Mackin Freeman
Schools Apart: Curricular Stratification Across School Socioeconomic Compositions And Implications For Educational Inequality In The Us, Daniel Mackin Freeman
Dissertations and Theses
Motivated by longstanding sociological theories and utilizing the most current, large, and nationally representative data, this dissertation aims to describe and add nuance to our understanding of how the curriculum US youth are exposed to is stratified by the socioeconomic composition of the schools they attend. All three empirical chapters suggest that school SES contributes to substantial differences in school structure, as evidenced by differences in course-taking patterns and how course-taking relates to academic achievement in high school and beyond. The first study suggests that the relationship between curricular intensity in secondary school and postsecondary achievement is variable depending on …
Efficient Visual Data Processing Approaches To Improve Resource Utilization, Yeganeh Jalalpour
Efficient Visual Data Processing Approaches To Improve Resource Utilization, Yeganeh Jalalpour
Dissertations and Theses
With continuous advancements in technology, the volume of visual data being captured, distributed, and consumed across various applications is rapidly increasing. Enhancing the efficiency of visual data processing can improve resource consumption, making the storage, transmission, and use of this growing visual content more effective.
Image and video data constitute a significant share of internet traffic, making video compression a critical factor in enhancing overall data throughput by improving the video compression ratio. Capturing, transferring, and storing raw video data is challenging due to the substantial resources required for both storage and computation. Video compression, however, can significantly mitigate these …
A Contemporary Examination Of Racial Intraminority Relations: Attitudes, Motivations, And Barriers To Participation In Collective Action, Jaboa Shawntaé Lake
A Contemporary Examination Of Racial Intraminority Relations: Attitudes, Motivations, And Barriers To Participation In Collective Action, Jaboa Shawntaé Lake
Dissertations and Theses
Social movements globally and within the U.S. are gaining widespread acknowledgment as many individuals become more aware of systems of disadvantage and oppression, gain a better understanding of their root causes, and engage in collective ways to approach social change. Social science research on engagement with collective action has started to go beyond looking only at majority-minority relations (such as between White and Black people) to examine solidarity and coalition building between minoritized groups. This dissertation expands the literature both on collective action and intraminority intergroup relations through three manuscripts. Chapter II explores various social attitudes (e.g., awareness of privilege …

An Examination Of Academic Library Platforms And Systems During Covid-19, Cole Hudson, Paul Gallagher
University Libraries Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper examines the use and subsequent trajectory of academic library technologies due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Taking a broad view of technologies, the systems and services discussed will center around resource use because COVID restrictions shuttered many in-person technologies. The two academic libraries compared in this study show a similar pattern of use and signal growth of certain platforms and technologies for the future.

Faculty of Science and Engineering Datasets
This dataset is a combined line shapefile composed of: 1) original mapping by Sarah J. Boulton (University of Plymouth) as part of the EEFIT event response effort, and 2) and edited lines sourced from database of Reitman et al. (2023). These published data have been checked for consistency and a significant number of changes made primarily consisting of: a) removal of duplicate lines for the same rupture segment; b) reshaping lines where inconsistent with satellite imagery, and c) removal of lines identified as other non-tectonic features such as shadows, crop marks, tracks etc.

PURPOSE: Preclinical data indicate that fianlimab (antilymphocyte activation gene-3) plus cemiplimab (anti-PD-1) enhances antitumor activity. Here, we report prespecified final analyses of the dose-escalation part of a first-in-human, phase 1 study (NCT03005782) of fianlimab as monotherapy and in combination with cemiplimab in patients with advanced malignancies.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Adult patients received 1 to 40 mg/kg of fianlimab plus 350 mg of cemiplimab every 3 weeks (Q3W) across various dose-escalation schedules. Primary objectives were the rate of dose-limiting toxicities, adverse events (including immune mediated), deaths, laboratory abnormalities, and pharmacokinetics. Secondary outcomes were objective response rate, best overall response, duration of …

Changes In Reproductive Health Information-Seeking Behaviors After The Dobbs Decision: Systematic Search Of The Wikimedia Database, Mackenzie Lemieux, Cyrus Zhou, Caroline Cary, Jeannie Kelly
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: After the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, confusion followed regarding the legality of abortion in different states across the country. Recent studies found increased Google searches for abortion-related terms in restricted states after the Dobbsv. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision was leaked. As patients and providers use Wikipedia (Wikimedia Foundation) as a predominant medical information source, we hypothesized that changes in reproductive health information-seeking behavior could be better understood by examining Wikipedia article traffic.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine trends in Wikipedia usage for abortion and contraception information before and after the Dobbs decision.

Frenemies: Why The Ftc Should Explore The Utility Of State Copas To Address Anticompetitive Consolidation In Healthcare, Alicia Gilbert
Frenemies: Why The Ftc Should Explore The Utility Of State Copas To Address Anticompetitive Consolidation In Healthcare, Alicia Gilbert
Louisiana Law Review
Much like other ‘90s trends, Certificates of Public Advantage (COPAs) are making a comeback. States have the potential to use COPAs as a unique healthcare antitrust enforcement mechanism. Rather than following a regime that exclusively focuses on price and output like traditional antitrust analysis, COPAs allow for greater consideration of other efficiencies, such as quality and access to care. And COPAs are designed to protect consumers through regulation rather than by protecting competition. Yet the policy position of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on COPAs ignores these opportunities, blanketly viewing COPAs as a threat to competition. This Article critiques the …

Enhancing Dignity Amongst Persons With Dementia Through Occupational Engagement, Habeeba Ahmed, Amy Lyons-Brown Ms, Otd, Otr/L
Fall 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium
Dementia is a cognitive impairment that impacts an individual's memory, judgement, safety awareness, and emotions which can interfere with their activities of daily living. As the condition progresses, the person living with dementia (PLWD) may require a care partner to help them complete their daily tasks. Having a care partner and being a care partner can be challenging for both, the PLWD and their care partner, as there begins to be a shift in their independence. The PLWD must rely on their care partner to help them throughout their day, leading to a decrease in independence and occupational engagement. When …
