Ontological Inquiry In The World Of Law: Bringing Forth Subjective Experiencing From The Shadows, Margarida Garcia Dec 2024

Ontological Inquiry In The World Of Law: Bringing Forth Subjective Experiencing From The Shadows, Margarida Garcia

Turning Toward Being: The Journal of Ontological Inquiry in Education

This article explores how we assess the value of ontological inquiry in the world of law, and to that end, it seeks to bring forth “seeings” that show up when we open the “curtains” of law, and engage the world of law as a field of subjective experience. By revisiting subjective impressions left from participation in the world of law, and that, for the most part, have remained unexamined, the author imagines what an “ontologically sensitive” approach to legal education, practice, and scholarship might look like and be if more space was given to those who participate in those …

Come To The Lake: Harnessing Academic Resources And Empowering Students To Transform Clinical Landscapes., Natalie A. Perkins, Natalie Loera, Issa Flores, Rajvinder Bains, Divya Desai, Carlin Reaume

Pacific Journal of Health

In higher education, the relationship between students and academic resources plays a pivotal role in shaping both individual growth and the broader landscape of learning. This article explores how educators, particularly in occupational therapy, have designed rich academic environments—likened to lakes brimming with resources—that provide students with opportunities for deep engagement. However, to truly harness these resources, students must be empowered as active participants in shaping the academic and clinical landscapes. The article advocates for a reimagining of academia, where students contribute to the knowledge ecosystem through research, innovation, and experiential learning, ensuring that education becomes a dynamic, collaborative process. …

Tiberias: Glass Finds And Production Debris, Yael Gorin-Rosen Dec 2024

Tiberias: Glass Finds And Production Debris, Yael Gorin-Rosen

Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel

Around 300 glass fragments, along with glass industry waste, were found in the Tiberias excavation. About half were diagnostic and represented several periods: Early Roman, Late Roman to early Byzantine, Byzantine to late Byzantine and Early Islamic. Nine vessels and a stirring rod are illustrated and discussed, while others are mentioned in the text. The glass artifacts discovered during the excavation correspond to well-known types from Tiberias and its surrounding areas, as well as from a broader distribution. Most were likely produced locally, as evidenced by workshop debris found in this and other excavations in Tiberias, and supported by written …

Tiberias: Remains Of An Early Islamic Buff Ware Pottery Workshop, Yardenna Alexandre Dec 2024

Tiberias: Remains Of An Early Islamic Buff Ware Pottery Workshop, Yardenna Alexandre

Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel

A small four-square excavation carried out in an area outside the Ottoman city wall of Tiberias exposed the remains of an Early Islamic pottery workshop, built over earlier Byzantine-period walls. The building remains included parts of small rooms, pits and a tiled-floor installation. The overlying accumulations and thick ashy layers contained numerous sherds of Buff Ware vessels, including glazed bowls, partially fired plain vessels, decorated sherds, clay molds, kiln bars and basalt polishing tools. All these finds indicate that the site was an Abbasid–Fatimid period Buff Ware pottery workshop.

Ḥorbat Ṭurit (South): A Late Pottery Neolithic Ephemeral Site In The ‘Akko Plain, Dmitry Yegorov, Nuha Agha

Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel

An ephemeral prehistoric site was recovered south of the multi-period settlement of Ḥorbat Ṭurit, in the section between Yasif Junction and the ‘Akko East interchange. The site revealed an archaeological layer on top of sterile terra rosa soil. According to the analysis of the lithic assemblage, the site dates to the Late Pottery Neolithic period. Despite the limited excavated area and the absence of architectural or other constructed elements, the occupation level of the site yielded a significant number of flint artifacts, some pottery and stone tool fragments, as well as a small collection of faunal remains. The excavation results …

Kefar Veradim: An Intermediate Bronze Age Communal Burial Ground In Western Upper Galilee, Edwin C.M. Van Den Brink Dec 2024

Kefar Veradim: An Intermediate Bronze Age Communal Burial Ground In Western Upper Galilee, Edwin C.M. Van Den Brink

Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel

Between 2016 and 2018, three brief salvage excavations conducted northwest of Kefar Veradim uncovered twenty rock-cut shafts leading into multiple burial chambers dating to the Intermediate Bronze Age, as well as five associated rock-cut basins of purportedly mortuary function. These tombs are part of a burial ground extending along a rocky spur overlooking Naḥal Yeḥiʻam. At least ten of the identified underground burial chambers, which were of two different types and originally sealed with flat stone slabs, had been robbed in antiquity. The remaining tombs could not be explored due to significant interference from the ultra-Orthodox burial society Atra Kadisha.

Ḥorbat Ḥanut: The Glass Vessels / חורבת חנות: כלי הזכוכית, Yael Gorin-Rosen, Ruth E. Jackson-Tal

Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel

The glass assemblage unearthed in burial caves, refuse pits and trial trenches at Ḥorbat Ḥanut is represented by thirty vessel fragments, as well as glass beads strung in a gold necklace and glass production refuse. These finds can be divided into two chronological groups, spanning from the second to the fifth century CE. The collection of glass artifacts found in this excavation, as well as in other excavations at the site, illustrates the wide range of uses for glass vessels and objects in daily life and burial contexts from the mid-Roman to the Byzantine periods. It also provides insight into …

Ḥorbat Ḥanut: Remains From The Roman To The Ottoman Periods On The Outskirts Of The Settlement / חורבת חנות: שרידים מהתקופות הרומית עד העות׳מאנית בשולי היישוב, Anat Beck-Nachtigal, Etan Ayalon Dec 2024

Ḥorbat Ḥanut: Remains From The Roman To The Ottoman Periods On The Outskirts Of The Settlement / חורבת חנות: שרידים מהתקופות הרומית עד העות׳מאנית בשולי היישוב, Anat Beck-Nachtigal, Etan Ayalon

Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel

The excavation at Ḥorbat Ḥanut uncovered remains from the Roman to the Ottoman periods, and especially from the Roman, Byzantine, Mamluk and Ottoman periods. These include burial caves, pit graves, caves, olive presses, refuse pits, water cisterns, quarries and other installations typical of the outskirts of a settlement. The site's location on the western fringes of the Samarian Highlands, alongside main roads, provided its inhabitants with economic and settlement advantages, ensuring a mixed economy that included field crops, vineyards, olive groves, pasturing, production of raw glass and glass vessels, and stone quarrying. Despite the site's location in a distinct Samarian …

Gay Language: Defying The Structural Limits Of English Language In The Philippines, Norberto V. Casabal Dec 2024

Gay Language: Defying The Structural Limits Of English Language In The Philippines, Norberto V. Casabal

Kritika Kultura

Gay language has achieved a higher degree of acceptance in recent years in the Philippines. Both gays and non-gays can be heard uttering gay expressions. But the main role of gayspeak for gay people in the Philippines is to function as an “armor” to shield themselves from the chasm and the social stigma caused by gender differences. From a linguistic point of view, this paper not only describes the nature of this gay language and how expressions are coined; it also looks at how code mixing (gayspeak + English language) is made possible. This paper also examines how this code-mixing …

Sneaking Into The Philippines, Along The Rivers Of Babylon: An Intervention Into The Language Question, E. San Juan Jr.

Kritika Kultura

The following are remarks made on 12 March 2008 at the launching of Balikbayang Sinta: An E. San Juan Reader published by Ateneo de Manila UP. Here the author puts forward seven theses through which the contentious “language question” may be reexamined, especially as it touches on issues of national solidarity.

Always Moving Toward Justice, John Streamas Dec 2024

Always Moving Toward Justice, John Streamas

Kritika Kultura

This review-essay discovers in the poems of E. San Juan, Jr. an evolving and passionate engagement with exile and hope. To be an exile, especially a Filipino exile, is not to be a tourist, idly consuming and colonizing, but to absorb languages and histories that console and inspire. Drawn from the lessons of decades of exile, the poems and the concluding essay confront injustice—the ways, for instance, in which oppressors colonize even time and space—and also envision a future when revolution replaces rootlessness, when migrants come home.

Anatomy Of Exile, Tamara Powell Dec 2024

Anatomy Of Exile, Tamara Powell

Kritika Kultura

This review essay provides an overview of the poetry and essays in E. San Juan, Jr.’s Balikbayang Mahal: Passages from Exile. Close attention is paid to “Mask of the Poet,” “Spring in Den Haag, Nederland, 25 March 2007,” “Vicissitudes of the Love and Death of Vladimir Mayakovsky,” and “Sa Loob at Labas Ng Bayan Kon Sawi: Emergency Signals from a Filipino Exile.” The book as a whole combines the postmodern idea of the lack of authentic, monadic self with the ancient idea that everything is connected.

The Condition Of Filipino Americanism: Global Americana As A Relation Of Death, Dylan Rodríguez Dec 2024

The Condition Of Filipino Americanism: Global Americana As A Relation Of Death, Dylan Rodríguez

Kritika Kultura

At the nexus of a prevailing Filipino-American discourse that celebrates the Filipino-American as a cooperative participant in the United States nation-building project sits an “unnamable violence” that masks the genocidal preconditions of “multiculturalist” white supremacy, to which this discourse unwittingly subscribes. The article explores the beginnings and development of this discourse, and the workings of American white supremacy in naturalizing relations of death between itself and its “others.” The article ends with a reflection on how “natural” disasters like Hurricane Katrina and the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo become means of legitimizing discourses that reinforce white invulnerability vis-à-vis disposability of non-white …

The Planet As Homeland, Charlie Samuya Veric Dec 2024

The Planet As Homeland, Charlie Samuya Veric

Kritika Kultura

The review essay outlines the relationship between the planet and homeland as sites of unfreedom and freedom for Filipinos everywhere. Using E. San Juan’s new collection of poems, the review essay argues that the logic of translation is crucial to understanding the connection between the planet and homeland. To understand this connection is to imagine the future of Filipinos who share the fate of slaves, refugees, detainees, and immigrants across the planet.

Postcolonial English Language Politics Today: Reading Ramanathan's The English-Vernacular Divide, T. Ruanni F. Tupas

Kritika Kultura

In this essay, I will discuss the ideological structure of current postcolonial English language politics in the world, arguing that despite the “advances” in post-Independence nationalist rhetoric in most “postcolonial” countries, the debates on language continue to rehash tired voices of pragmatism and linguistic nationalism. I further argue that what is usually “notable” in current postcolonial English language politics is the disappearance or devaluing of class as a central concept in the understanding of postcolonial language and society. I will discuss these arguments through my review of Ramanathan’s The English-Vernacular Divide: Postcolonial Language Politics and Practice. I claim that the …

This brief response addresses concerns raised by Ruanni Tupas in his reading of my book, The English-Vernacular Divide. It provides some background about my study, and attempts to uncover some researching and texting tensions I experienced when writing the book. Straddling as I am different geographic spaces—India and the US—with different discourses regarding English language learning and teaching in each space, the response details how my focus on the local and everyday became a way of showing how some discourses about English (its being a democratizing force, or the language of empowerment) run the risk of turning a blind eye …

Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy For Social Anxiety In Adolescents, April Fohrman Dec 2024

Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy For Social Anxiety In Adolescents, April Fohrman

Counselor Education Capstones

Exposure therapy has been around for decades and is still proving to be a robust, evidence-based treatment modality for several psychological issues. Imaginal exposure (vividly imagining a feared object, situation, or activity) and in vivo (directly experiencing the real fear or situation) are the traditional modes of exposure intervention. Although these treatments have shown that they work, they can also be time-consuming, expensive, or even impossible to replicate. A newer exposure therapy combines traditional imaginal therapy with in vivo therapy, but virtually.

This combination creates a middle ground where exposures to situations or fears can be increased or decreased virtually …

Assessing Risks Of Atypical Sexually Violent Offenders, Lesli Mattheus Dec 2024

Assessing Risks Of Atypical Sexually Violent Offenders, Lesli Mattheus

Master of Arts in Human Services

Forensic behavioral health research over the past few decades has revealed the complexities of assessing sexually violent offenders (SVOs). Risk assessments play a critical role in determining penalties and treatment, evaluating recidivism risk, and guiding interventions. However, most research has focused on adult male offenders, leaving a significant gap in understanding less common offender types, such as women, juveniles, and pedophiles or child sexual abusers. Gender biases and underreporting limit the understanding of women offenders, while juveniles face challenges like substance use disorders and mental health issues. Structured clinical judgment is a key method for assessing SVO risk, but forensic …
