American Public Opinion And Media Representations Of The Crimean War (1853–1856), Anurag Shah Dec 2024

American Public Opinion And Media Representations Of The Crimean War (1853–1856), Anurag Shah

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

During the Crimean War (1853–1856), France and Britain sided with the Ottoman Empire to curb Russian expansion. Though an ocean away, the American public was not only aware of this conflict but often held strong opinions on the war and its participants. American media representations of the Crimean War are indicative of this, and a systematic examination reveals some significant trends in reporting, aligning closely to and providing nuance for larger trends in American history.

The most significant trend in newspaper reporting of the Crimean War was a North-South geographical divide. Northern states supported Britain and France throughout the conflict, …

Where To Build Food Banks: A Machine Learning Approach, Gavin Ruan Dec 2024

Where To Build Food Banks: A Machine Learning Approach, Gavin Ruan

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Over 44 million Americans currently suffer from food insecurity, of whom 13 million are children. Food insecurity has been shown to cause a wide range of both physical and developmental issues. Across the United States, thousands of food banks and pantries serve as vital sources of food and other forms of aid for food-insecure families. By optimizing food bank locations, food banks and their resources would become more accessible to families who desperately require it. The aim of this paper is to build a machine learning framework that is able to optimize food bank locations and to consider factors such …

Security At Too High An Environmental Cost?: The European Union's Energy Independence Strategy And Its Environmental Implications For Air Quality In Poland And Hungary, Stephanie P. Peterson Dec 2024

Security At Too High An Environmental Cost?: The European Union's Energy Independence Strategy And Its Environmental Implications For Air Quality In Poland And Hungary, Stephanie P. Peterson

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the European Union worked to secure liquified natural gas (LNG) deals with third countries to abolish its dependence on Russian gas. In this article, I sought to determine the environmental implications of the European Union’s new LNG deals on the air quality in Hungary and Poland, two former communist states. Despite LNG being a cleaner fossil fuel, I hypothesized that it posed a threat to Hungary’s and Poland’s air quality as both countries endured rapid industrialization under Soviet control that forwent environmental protections. To prove this, I used qualitative data from before the …

Effect Of Developmental Manganese Exposure On The Locomotor Behavior Of Zebrafish Larvae, Breeann Mild Dec 2024

Effect Of Developmental Manganese Exposure On The Locomotor Behavior Of Zebrafish Larvae, Breeann Mild

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Manganese, an essential trace mineral, plays crucial roles in various physiological processes within living organisms. However, excessive exposure to manganese can lead to toxicity, particularly impacting the central nervous system. This study aimed to assess the impact of manganese exposure on locomotor behavior during early development using zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model organism. Zebrafish embryos at 1–2 hours post fertilization (hpf) were exposed to five different concentrations of manganese chloride (0, 0.01, 0.05, 0.1, or 0.5 mM) until 120 hpf. Locomotor behavior was assessed using the visual motor response assay, measuring parameters such as total distance moved, velocity, and …

Predictive Maintenance Analysis Of Turbofan Engine Sensor Data, Stanley A. Melkumian Dec 2024

Predictive Maintenance Analysis Of Turbofan Engine Sensor Data, Stanley A. Melkumian

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Predictive maintenance in aviation and aerospace applications is among the most explored problems in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), and datasets such as NASA’s C-MAPPS turbofan engine degradation simulation data have proven invaluable, helping researchers explore numerous questions on engine performance, maintenance, and failure. The purpose of this study was to extend the current research on predicting the remaining useful life (RUL) of engines and their risk classification. Starting with simple yet under-investigated nonlinear survival and random forest models, the analysis implemented eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and long short-term memory (LSTM) from TensorFlow’s Keras library. For both regression …

Optimization Of Tps Films Using An Adaptive Design Of Experiments Approach In A Bayesian Optimization Framework, Theresa Marks, Gracie White, Scott Lohman, Mayank Malhotra

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Plastic pollution, amounting to 12 million tons annually, necessitates sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics. Compostable thermoplastic starch (TPS) films show promise but lack strength and durability compared to traditional plastics. This study employs an adaptive design of experiments (DoE) approach to enhance TPS films by optimizing testing points. The research focuses on varying concentrations of plasticizers (acetic acid and glycerol) in a water and potato starch mixture, aiming to identify the optimal ratio maximizing tensile strength and % elongation at break. Gaussian process regression (GPR) with uncertainty estimation and Bayesian optimization (BO) utilizing an acquisition function (AF) are employed. The …

Identification Of Conserved Eukaryotic Gene Products In Novel Mycobacteriophage, Brandon Mar, Jade Coxon, Lily Esterline, Sydney Clifford, Gabriella Burke, Mallory Motz, Alaina Gartner, Kioni Bush, James Lin, Lizzie Adams, Sophia Palant

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Bacteriophage, a type of virus that infects bacteria, was discovered 100 years ago, initially isolated with a plaque assay in the 1940s. A mycobacteriophage is a subtype of bacteriophage that specifically infects mycobacteria. Since the introduction of DNA technologies and efforts to identify a plethora of bacteriophages, over 10,000 bacteriophages have been identified with 1,500 sequenced. Bacteriophage discovery has aided in genetic editing techniques, the development of synthetic biology tools, and disease treatment. However, to be able to expand on these capabilities, there is a need to identify more bacteriophages and sequence the genomes of these viruses, as they outnumber …

The Influence Of Soil Properties And Land Management On Soil Porewater Chemistry, Bethany Kettleborough Dec 2024

The Influence Of Soil Properties And Land Management On Soil Porewater Chemistry, Bethany Kettleborough

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Soil water dynamics influence vegetation health, soil geochemical reactions, and stream chemistry. Water dynamics can be controlled by soil type and land management. It is important to understand water movement due to its influence on soil weathering, microbial activity, and nutrient transport. Water movement can be investigated using water stable isotope variability as a tracer. The purpose of this ongoing study was to analyze stable isotopes and dissolved ions in prairie and agricultural land management sites in Nebraska and Illinois. Prairies typically contain deep-rooted grasses, while agricultural lands contain shallow-rooted row crops. Root depth is considered a major control on …

And You Don't Seem To Understand: Disanalogies Between Artificial And Biological Consciousness, Derek Freeman Dec 2024

And You Don't Seem To Understand: Disanalogies Between Artificial And Biological Consciousness, Derek Freeman

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

This paper posits a new way of attempting to formulate theories of machine consciousness. At present, inquiry revolves around formulating criteria that could be applied to machines to determine if they possess human-like consciousness. The paper demonstrates that efforts so far have not been fruitful, instead finding that present methods of inquiry are destined to result in an impasse between those who support the notion of machine consciousness and those who oppose it. Consequently, the paper questions the assumption that human and machine consciousness must resemble each other. It explores a different approach, one that rejects the idea that the …

Coded Bias In Applicant Tracking Systems, Prithvi Dhanabal, Emily Hao Dec 2024

Coded Bias In Applicant Tracking Systems, Prithvi Dhanabal, Emily Hao

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

This Tech Justice Lab project explored potential hiring discrimination against transgender and gender-nonconforming job applicants in the hiring process by evaluating the impact of including pronouns in résumés submitted to an applicant tracking system (ATS) platform. The research team began by collecting background information regarding existing discrimination against transgender job applicants and how ATS platforms can reflect and magnify existing biases in the hiring process. A “sock puppet” audit was then conducted by submitting fake user résumés to test the platform’s response. The chosen platform was Jobscan, an applicant-facing software claiming the ability to simulate a résumé review by major …

Technological Accessibility For Wildlife Telemetry Research, Andrew Danielson Dec 2024

Technological Accessibility For Wildlife Telemetry Research, Andrew Danielson

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Over the course of two years, I conducted original research into improving accessibility for researchers in the field of wildlife telemetry. Wildlife telemetry is a technique used by biologists to track wildlife in the field, which requires the biologist to attach a small radio transmitter to an animal, usually using a specially designed collar, harness, or another means. These transmitters are battery powered and will emit or transmit a regularly timed radio signal that can be received by radio receivers carried by the researchers. Two issues faced by wildlife telemetry researchers are the cost of wildlife telemetry equipment and the …

Embodied Cognition And Teaching Stem: Tenets To Explain And Enhance A Middle School Science Project, Jonathan E. Roberts, Joshua L. Williams, Robert A. Hodgdon, Caroline Payne, Gabriela Ruiz Emmanuelli

Current Issues in Middle Level Education

STEM pedagogy is a popular area for research and discussion. The empirical literature on this topic supports a variety of approaches (e.g., inquiry-based) to help instructors spark student interest create an effective learning environment, and foster long-term retention and transfer of information related to STEM topics. One potential approach is to use tenets of embodied cognition, in which behavior and cognition emerge out of real-time sensorimotor behavior of the individual situated within a particular context, to implement strategies to enhance STEM pedagogy. We applied the six lessons of embodied cognition to understand the beneficial aspects of a middle-school project on …

Toward A Renewal Of Critical Practice: Reflections On The Occupy Movement And Filipino Self Determination, Jeffrey Arellano Cabusao Dec 2024

Toward A Renewal Of Critical Practice: Reflections On The Occupy Movement And Filipino Self Determination, Jeffrey Arellano Cabusao

Kritika Kultura

This essay examines the significance of the developing Occupy movement within the United States, which emerged from a year of global protests (2011). It suggests that one way to broaden its vision of solidarity is to renew our critical practice (“conscientization and action” – borrowing from Brazilian educator Paulo Freire). A renewal of critical practice within the context of this essay involves examining the following more closely: 1) the dynamics of race and class in the United States and abroad, 2) the site of the academy (the politics of knowledge production), and 3.) the significance of our submerged histories of …

“Give The People What They Want”: Bodies On Display In Marlene Van Niekerk’S Triomf, Lara Buxbaum Dec 2024

“Give The People What They Want”: Bodies On Display In Marlene Van Niekerk’S Triomf, Lara Buxbaum

Kritika Kultura

Marlene van Niekerk’s Triomf has attained both literary acclaim and notoriety since it was first published in Afrikaans in 1994 (English translation 1999). This darkly comic novel is set at the dawn of the democratic election and as such, the fictional context mirrors the historical moment in which it was published. The novel relates the misadventures of the incestuous and indigent Afrikaans family, the Benades, whose grotesque bodies are described in minute detail. The paper examines the reason for this visceral corporeality in the context of Louise Bethlehem’s classification of the post-apartheid literary canon as one “in which the abject …

The Long And Short Of It: Reflection On “Form” In Recent South African Fiction, Chris Thurman Dec 2024

The Long And Short Of It: Reflection On “Form” In Recent South African Fiction, Chris Thurman

Kritika Kultura

This paper takes as its starting point not those aspects of “form” associated with “formalist” criticism—structure, prose style, figurative language, or other aesthetic elements—but rather the more mundane consideration of length and the related matter of genre. This is a deliberately literal (rather than literary) interpretation of “form”: what does a book look and feel like when held in the reader’s hand? What reader expectations are aroused? From the answers to these questions can be discerned certain trends in recent (post-apartheid/transitional) fiction—or, more specifically, in writing and publishing practices. In 2004, Michael Chapman identified the short story as the literary …
