Addressing Non-Stationary Fishery Dynamics And Demographic Complexity In Integrated Stock Assessment Models, Matthew L. Cheng
Addressing Non-Stationary Fishery Dynamics And Demographic Complexity In Integrated Stock Assessment Models, Matthew L. Cheng
Fisheries
Integrated stock assessment models are complex non-linear statistical models that fit a variety of fishery-dependent and independent data sources to estimate the status and trends of fish populations, providing recommendations for sustainable harvest levels. Given their complexity, simplifying assumptions are necessary in stock assessment models to balance model parsimony versus complexity, while also considering data limitations. In this dissertation, I investigated considerations for addressing non-stationary fishery dynamics and evaluated the consequences of oversimplified assumptions of fishery dynamics and sex-specific demography in stock assessment models. Using Alaska sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria) as a case-study, I developed a generalized framework to standardize fishery-dependent …
Stable Isotope Analyses Of Eye Lenses And Stomach-Content Analysis Reveal Ontogenetic Variation In Arctic Whitefish Trophic Dynamics, Jonah A. Bacon
Stable Isotope Analyses Of Eye Lenses And Stomach-Content Analysis Reveal Ontogenetic Variation In Arctic Whitefish Trophic Dynamics, Jonah A. Bacon
Fisheries
Determining the ontogenetic trophic ecology of sympatric, morphologically similar fishes is critical for increasing our understanding of life history. We combined bulk and amino acid compound-specific stable isotope analysis of eye lenses with stomach-content analysis to examine ontogenetic trophic dynamics of four amphidromous whitefishes (Arctic Cisco Coregonus autumnalis, Least Cisco C. sardinella, Broad Whitefish C. nasus, Humpback Whitefish C. pidschian) from the central Beaufort Sea, Alaska. Compound-specific stable nitrogen isotope results showed slight increases in trophic position across ontogeny for each species and indicated the feasibility of this method for comparing the trophic ontogenetic development of closely related, mobile predator …
Combining Alaska Forage Fish Data From Research Surveys And Predator Diets To Assess Forage Fish Response To Climatic Regime Shifts, Lindsay Turner
Combining Alaska Forage Fish Data From Research Surveys And Predator Diets To Assess Forage Fish Response To Climatic Regime Shifts, Lindsay Turner
Fisheries
Forage fish play a crucial role in the marine ecosystems of Alaska through the transfer of energy from lower trophic levels to marine predators. Understanding and quantifying Alaskan forage fish responses to rapid climatic shifts is needed to inform adaptive management strategies under a warmer and more variable future in Alaska. However, data on the occurrence and abundance of forage fish in Alaska are limited due to the diversity of life history strategies and patchy distribution that make their capture in fisheries-independent surveys difficult. In this thesis, I address current gaps in the data available on forage fish through the …

Gene Expression Changes In The Seagrass Cymodocea Nodosa Individuals In Response To Aquatic Acidification, Enes Göksal, Esra Öztürk Yi̇ği̇t
Turkish Journal of Botany
Human activities have caused a rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels, leading to greater absorption of CO2 by oceans and causing ocean acidification. This phenomenon, marked by a reduction in pH, represents substantial risks to marine ecosystems, including seagrass meadows. Seagrasses are vital elements of coastal ecosystems, performing important functions in carbon storage, stabilizing shorelines, and preserving biodiversity; however, reactions to ocean acidification are not well understood, especially in terms of molecular. This research study examined alterations in gene expression within seagrass meadows, namely the species Cymodocea nodosa, in reaction to simulated ocean acidification conditions. Climate chamber system to adjust …

An Investigation Of Raciolinguistic Ideologies In Japanese Rap Battles, Morgan Reynolds
An Investigation Of Raciolinguistic Ideologies In Japanese Rap Battles, Morgan Reynolds
Linguistics
This thesis interrogates what are normally implicit linguistic ideologies surrounding who is a legitimate speaker of Japanese and how it implicates a relationship between ethnicity, nationality, culture, and language. Using a corpus of recorded rap battles from YouTube in which one of the rappers is known to be of non-Japanese or partially non-Japanese heritage, discourse analysis demonstrates how race, foreignness and otherness are made relevant in disses of opponents’ rap skill. The history and characteristics of Japanese rap are outlined with an eye toward how the conventions of the musical genre reflect preoccupations with creating a distinctly Japanese form of …
Meaning As Process And Product: Hybridizing Metamodern Hylosemiotics With Postmodern And Contemporary American Poetry, Zeke Shomler
Meaning As Process And Product: Hybridizing Metamodern Hylosemiotics With Postmodern And Contemporary American Poetry, Zeke Shomler
English
This thesis expands on Jason Storm’s theory of metamodern hylosemiotics by addressing contemporary American poetic strategies and their relationship to modernism and postmodernism, especially through Cole Swenson and David St. John’s definition of the “American hybrid.” In modifying Storm’s theoretical system, I offer a hybridized semiotics that locates meaning both in the information or “content” inferred through the act of reading and the related processes of interacting with the text. Through readings of poetry by John Ashbery, Terrance Hayes, Clark Coolidge, and William Stafford, I show that hybridizing semiotics is not only necessary for the consistency and viability of metamodern …

This study assessed the relative abundance of carbohydrates (glucan, mannitol, alginate, and fucoidan) in these species, as well as the sulfate content of fucoidan and …
New, Derivative: Third-Party Litigation Finance And Derivatives Regulation, Martin Flores
New, Derivative: Third-Party Litigation Finance And Derivatives Regulation, Martin Flores
Washington and Lee Law Review Online
Litigation finance is globally abundant and largely unregulated in the United States. The mechanics behind third-party litigation finance are simple: The funder fronts litigation costs in exchange for a promised share of the proceeds if the litigant succeeds. While the normative debate about the value of these contracts in society endures, the litigation finance industry has new players in hedge funds and other opaque investment firms seeking high returns from risky litigation. Many scholars agree on whether to regulate these third-party litigation finance firms. The key debate rages on how to rein in an unbridled industry.
To add to this …

Stitch Incoming: Lindke V. Freed’S Impact On Social-Media-Blocking Litigation, Clare R. Norins, Mark L. Bailey
Washington and Lee Law Review Online
Since at least 2016, social-media-blocking litigation against government officials who censor their online critics has been an evolving battleground for First Amendment rights of free speech and petition. In 2024, the United States Supreme Court issued its first substantive opinion on social media blocking, holding that government officials’ social media activity, even on a personal account, constitutes state action triggering constitutional scrutiny if (1) the official possessed actual authority to speak on the State’s behalf, and (2) purported to exercise that authority when she spoke on social media.
In this Article, we explain the Court’s novel two-part test for determining …
