Lecanemab: A Second In Class Therapy For The Management Of Early Alzheimer's Disease., Connie H Yoon, Corey Groff, Olivia Criss

Pharmacy Articles

The Food and Drug Administration granted traditional approval of lecanemab for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Lecanemab is a humanized anti-amyloid monoclonal antibody directed towards Aβ protofibrils. Lecanemab is the only drug that targets Aβ soluble protofibrils and has shown statistical differences in mild AD or mild cognitive impairment. In its landmark phase III trial, lecanemab was shown to slow the progression of clinical decline, and a reduction in amyloid protein accumulation. The difference in mean CDR-SOB score improvement between the treatment and placebo groups was -0.45, of which the clinical significance could be argued. Amyloid burden was also …

Surgery Articles

Females are at greatest risk for reinjury after return to sport (RTS) following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR). The reasons for these sex differences, however, remain unclear. Psychological factors such as kinesiophobia have been identified as a potential predictor for reinjury following RTS. Studies investigating kinesiophobia have identified sex differences, yet whether this holds in the ACLR population remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine whether there are sex differences in kinesiophobia and other psychological factors, such as readiness to RTS and self-reported pain in the ACLR population. A total of 20 participants, eleven males (23.0 …

Predictive Power Of Wastewater For Nowcasting Infectious Disease Transmission: A Retrospective Case Study Of Five Sewershed Areas In Louisville, Kentucky., Fayette Klaassen, Rochelle H. Holm, Ted Smith, Ted Cohen, Aruni Bhatnagar, Nicolas A. Menzies

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Background: Epidemiological nowcasting traditionally relies on count surveillance data. The availability and quality of such count data may vary over time, limiting representation of true infections. Wastewater data correlates with traditional surveillance data and may provide additional value for nowcasting disease trends. Methods: We obtained SARS-CoV-2 case, death, wastewater, and serosurvey data for Jefferson County, Kentucky (USA), between August 2020 and March 2021, and parameterized an existing nowcasting model using combinations of these data. We assessed the predictive performance and variability at the sewershed level and compared the effects of adding or replacing wastewater data to case and death reports. …

Displaced Worker Angst And Far Right Populism, Thomas E. Lambert Jan 2024

Displaced Worker Angst And Far Right Populism, Thomas E. Lambert

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Background

Nothing causes more anguish and frustration than downward social mobility such as that experienced by less-educated workers and especially by displaced workers. Those who lose economic status lose more than income because they become so socially isolated that they are further frustrated through loneliness (Case and Deaton 2020). Hanna Arendt points out that lonely men are susceptible to authoritarian influence (1973, p. 475).

There is yet another aspect to the downward social mobility of low skilled men, namely that they are losing ground not only relative to social norms but also relative to the wages of low-skilled women. In …

Case Study: Improving Student Advisory Board Engagement, Anita R. Hall

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

After two pandemic-impacted academic years, the University of Louisville’s Libraries Student Advisory Board (LSAB) was starting to feel stagnant. Meetings that had previously included hands-on activities, lively conversation, and free food had settled into the virtual meeting doldrums. Attendance was down and conversation felt stilted, despite the librarian facilitator devoting additional time and effort to preparing for each meeting. In an effort to improve engagement among the group and better understand the continued relevance of advisory groups in the current moment, the author undertook a series of interviews with other advisory group facilitators. Results from these interviews were used to …

Pastoral Burnout: Causes, Consequences And Closure, Hyveth A. Williams Jan 2024

Pastoral Burnout: Causes, Consequences And Closure, Hyveth A. Williams

Faculty Publications

Pastoral burnout is a growing concern among religious leaders in North America, with significant consequences for both individuals and congregations. No denomination is unaffected by its debilitating presence; even Seventh-day Adventist clergy are not immune to this increasing stress-related twenty-first century health malady. Several factors contribute to pastoral burnout, including excessive workload, unrealistic expectations, lack of support, and boundary violations. These aspects often lead to emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, reduced personal accomplishment, and though rare, suicide. This presentation will explore the causes, consequences, and suggested conclusion with potential strategies for intervention and prevention of pastoral burnout.

The West Indian manatee is one of the most threatened species in Brazil. The species has currently a patchy distribution from the state of Alagoas to the state of Amapá. The difficulty of observing manatees, especially in estuarine waters, is a challenge for conservation. Therefore, it is necessary to use new methodologies and technologies to solve manatee detection problems in their natural habitats. The goal of this study was to use an active acoustic method of detection to estimate manatee density and abundance in the estuarine complex of the Timonha and Ubatuba rivers, between the states of Ceará and Piauí, …

The Modern Way To Write A Statute Is To Tell A Story, Richard K. Neumann Jr. Jan 2024

The Modern Way To Write A Statute Is To Tell A Story, Richard K. Neumann Jr.

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Except for the United States, the English-speaking world has been moving toward writing statutes as stories with characters and plot tensions. British statutes are the most advanced in this respect.

To illustrate the British method, the key statutes in the Mar-a-Lago Indictment are redrafted in this article to resemble the form they would take if recently enacted by Parliament. l compare the statutes and the redrafts side-by-side. And I do the same thing with two sections of the Electoral Count Act, which governs what Congress does on every January 6 following a presidential election year.

The article explains how the …

Intersectionality Matters In Food And Drug Law, Colleen Campbell Jan 2024

Intersectionality Matters In Food And Drug Law, Colleen Campbell

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Feminist scholars critique food and drug law as a site of gender bias and regulatory neglect. The historical exclusion of women from clinical trials by the FDA prioritized male bodies as the object of clinical research and therapies. Likewise, the FDA’s prior restriction on access to contraceptive birth control illustrates how patriarchal and paternalistic attitudes within the Agency can harm women’s reproductive health. However, there is little analysis of how race and gender intersect in this domain.

This Article uses the regulation of skin-lightening cosmetics products to illustrate why and how intersectionality matters in food and drug law. While the …

The proliferation of mobile networks and their increasing importance to modern life, combined with the emerging threat of quantum computing, present new challenges and opportunities for cybersecurity. This paper addresses the complexity of protecting these critical infrastructures against future quantum attacks while considering operational sustainability. We begin with an overview of the current landscape, identify the main vulnerabilities in mobile networks, and evaluate existing security solutions with new post-quantum cryptography (PQC) methods. We then present a quantum-secure architecture with PQC and Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) tailored explicitly for sustainable mobile networks and illustrate its applicability with several use cases that …

Image Interpretation Confusion Resolution By Collaboration, Ben Mathew, Akram Alghanmi, Marius Silaghi Jan 2024

Image Interpretation Confusion Resolution By Collaboration, Ben Mathew, Akram Alghanmi, Marius Silaghi

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Visual scene understanding can benefit from inputs provided by multiple participants with their different perspectives, and a distributed version of a modified Waltz filtering enriched with modern AI inferences can potentially help accuracy and speed trade-offs by exploiting the simultaneous perspectives and logic. Speed is improved by the contribution of the implicit parallelisation in processing. Accuracy improvements are expected from updating constraints with novel and more powerful inferences that the participants can apply. Automatically understanding scenes is a highly relevant problem. Multiple robots communicate with one another to classify shapes of edges of an object. Local reasoning can reduce communication …

Informed Traffic Signal Preemption For Emergency Vehicles, Ioana Silaghi, Zobaida Alssadi, Marius Silaghi Jan 2024

Informed Traffic Signal Preemption For Emergency Vehicles, Ioana Silaghi, Zobaida Alssadi, Marius Silaghi

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Emergency vehicle traffic light preemption systems are extended by using more detailed predicted trajectories to provide favorable changes of signals. The location of the emergency vehicle is tracked and traffic signals on the requested travel route are contacted and switched to become green in time, before the emergency vehicle reaches the selected intersection. The resulting time to destination obtained by our simulation is compared to a control simulation without preemption. In simulations, when an emergency vehicle reaches a red light, a delay of five seconds is considered to happen naturally to the vehicle’s journey due to preventive driving. The switching …

Good Apples / Bad Apples: Detection And Classification Of Damage, Angel Star, Conor Pommer, Marius Silaghi Jan 2024

Good Apples / Bad Apples: Detection And Classification Of Damage, Angel Star, Conor Pommer, Marius Silaghi

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

The sorting of apples in classes of quality using vision, and the detection of bad apples using X-ray and vision have naturally been addressed frequently in the past due to the sheer significance of this fruit. Our novelty consists in going past detection of damage into measuring it and classifying damaged apples for potential usages beyond direct sale, rather than simply deciding if an apple is rotten or not. Size and color of damage stains is assessed to help deciding potential usage of the apples. One can redirect apples towards various usages outside markets for the general population, such as …

Nudging Automated Planners With Learned User Preferences, Fusun Yaman, Thomas C. Eskridge, Ron Scott, Li Lin

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Automated planning tools play a large and expanding role in the function of many parts of our lives. The complex nature of the planning problem and the increasing amount of information the human planner must synthesize indicate that assistive automation must soon become the norm. Despite this, many existing automated planners are incapable of producing plans that reflect the desires and expertise of their operators. They do not have the direct ability to consider the operators’ priorities, nor can they exploit expert operational knowledge that comes from human experience and not data systems. In this paper we present methods to …

Perception Model For Mobile Robots Assisting Humans In Decision-Making During Complex Situations, Sheuli Paul, Marius Silaghi, Veton Këpuska, Akram Alghanmi

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Perception, the process of comprehending and deriving meaning from one’s surroundings, is fundamental to human decision-making. In this context, we explore the development of a robust perception model designed for mobile robots to facilitate effective human-robot communication and decision-making in dynamic and intricate scenarios. Achieving localization without GPS in a network of roads using stratified sequential importance sampling where the stratification levels are based on semantic object spaces in the map and on the running time, we articulate and describe the proposed development and experimentation environment, demonstrating the potential of our perception model. Rescape: Transforming Coral-Reefscape Images For Quantitative Analysis, Z. Ferris, E. Ribeiro, T. Nagata, R. Van Woesik

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Ever since the first image of a coral reef was captured in 1885, people worldwide have been accumulating images of coral reefscapes that document the historic conditions of reefs. However, these innumerable reefscape images suffer from perspective distortion, which reduces the apparent size of distant taxa, rendering the images unusable for quantitative analysis of reef conditions. Here we solve this century-long distortion problem by developing a novel computer-vision algorithm, ReScape, which removes the perspective distortion from reefscape images by transforming them into top-down views, making them usable for quantitative analysis of reef conditions. In doing so, we demonstrate the first-ever …

Mechanics Of The Foot And Ankle Joints During Running Using A Multi-Segment Foot Model Compared With A Single-Segment Model, Justin C. Wager, John H. Challis Jan 2024

Mechanics Of The Foot And Ankle Joints During Running Using A Multi-Segment Foot Model Compared With A Single-Segment Model, Justin C. Wager, John H. Challis

Exercise Science Faculty Publications

The primary purpose of this study was to compare the ankle joint mechanics, during the stance phase of running, computed with a multi-segment foot model (MULTI; three segments) with a traditional single segment foot model (SINGLE). Traditional ankle joint models define all bones between the ankle and metatarsophalangeal joints as a single rigid segment (SINGLE). However, this contrasts with the more complex structure and mobility of the human foot, recent studies of walking using more multiple-segment models of the human foot have highlighted the errors arising in ankle kinematics and kinetics by using an oversimplified model of the foot. This …

Bayesian Rare Variant Analysis Identifies Novel Schizophrenia Putative Risk Genes, Shengtong Han Jan 2024

Bayesian Rare Variant Analysis Identifies Novel Schizophrenia Putative Risk Genes, Shengtong Han

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

The genetics of schizophrenia is so complex that it involves both common variants and rare variants. Rare variant association studies of schizophrenia are challenging because statistical methods for rare variant analysis are under-powered due to the rarity of rare variants. The recent Schizophrenia Exome meta-analysis (SCHEMA) consortium, the largest consortium in this field to date, has successfully identified 10 schizophrenia risk genes from ultra-rare variants by burden test, while more risk genes remain to be discovered by more powerful rare variant association test methods. In this study, we use a recently developed Bayesian rare variant association method that is powerful …

Iowa Journal of Communication

This study aims to provide a more in-depth analysis by exploring how images of President Obama successfully led the public to perceive him favorably. This qualitative visual analysis shows that the success of Mr. Souza’s coverage of President Obama stems from his documentary images of intimate moments of the president. Those intimate documentations might help some viewers embrace President Obama as trustworthy, at least for those who came to know him more via these images.

Teachers Do It All: A Cluster-Based Analysis Of Abbott Elementary, Peter Heryla Jan 2024

Teachers Do It All: A Cluster-Based Analysis Of Abbott Elementary, Peter Heryla

Iowa Journal of Communication

This study employs rhetorical criticism to analyze the television sitcom Abbott Elementary (2021). Through close examination of the episodes “Pilot,” “Development Day,” and “Egg Drop,” this analysis aims to uncover key ideas about the multifaceted roles and responsibilities educators are required to assume outside of their main job as “teacher.” Utilizing cluster criticism, the study shows that being a teacher is about more than educating, and that teachers are motivated by common themes when they act outside of their role. The study also focuses on the mediated representation of teachers and the harmful demographic tropes that have historically characterized them, …
