Double Jointed: Gendered Flexibility And The Overextended Self, Grace A. Bromley Jan 2024

Double Jointed: Gendered Flexibility And The Overextended Self, Grace A. Bromley

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores compulsory domesticity and the impulse to overextend oneself, both pressures often associated with the construct of femininity. Through diving into my personal history, which includes growing up in a three-generational home of women, I explore mimesis as it functions in both the replication of identity and in terms of pictorial representation; specifically I address its relationship to gender, manifestation within the body, and the search for subjectivity through the process of making and thinking. In various forms of material explorations, I play with ideas of malleability, mimicry and “embedded” behaviors that are passed down and embodied in …

Investigating The Protein Interactome Of Escherichia Coli To Understand Metabolic Regulation When Proteins Bind: A Systems Biology Study., Shomeek Chowdhury Jan 2024

Investigating The Protein Interactome Of Escherichia Coli To Understand Metabolic Regulation When Proteins Bind: A Systems Biology Study., Shomeek Chowdhury

Theses and Dissertations

Proteins bind other proteins and work together as machines to perform many biological functions. Metabolic enzymes governing the life-sustaining metabolic reactions and therefore, metabolism are proteins which also binds other proteins. In this dissertation work, I have explored proteins when they interact with metabolic enzymes, play any role in regulating the cell’s metabolism. I study this phenomenon in Escherichia coli whose protein-protein interaction data is readily available in public databases with proper reference to the experimental study. Another good reason is the predictions we make in this computational study can be tested and validated in E. coli as it is …

May Your Flight Be Smooth, The Wind Calm, The Cloud Safe, And The Sky Blue!, Kai Chuang Jan 2024

May Your Flight Be Smooth, The Wind Calm, The Cloud Safe, And The Sky Blue!, Kai Chuang

Theses and Dissertations

They were born in a port city, on an island. In their eyes, many things seemed like the water. Fluid, compound, and ambiguous. Those things shift shapes with their containers, blending with elements from various sources, carrying multiple meanings, images and interpretations.

The sea is deep and endless, similar to stories, quests and dreams.

The coastline is a constant dialogue among the land, the ocean, the wind, organisms, physics, the past, randomness, and chance…When they think about boundaries, they recall the coastline.

The Neural Mechanisms Of Inter-Friend Aggression, Wyatt Brown Jan 2024

The Neural Mechanisms Of Inter-Friend Aggression, Wyatt Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Decades of research concerns intimate partner aggression (IPA). While important to understand and prevent, investigations of IPA largely ignore another vital social relationship: close friendships. To investigate aggression between close friends – inter-friend aggression (IFA) – functional neuroimaging analyses enable to assessment of neural activity and mental representations of aggression in different social relationships. As such, 98 participants completed the well-validated Taylor Aggression Paradigm modified for a magnetic resonance environment against their current romantic partner, a close friend, and a stranger. Univariate analyses assessed the differences in the degree of neural activity and the role of Narcissism and negative urgency …

Side Effects, Shannon R. Kurzyniec Jan 2024

Side Effects, Shannon R. Kurzyniec

Theses and Dissertations

Through the exploration of the personal and social impacts of prescription medications on the human condition, I have discovered that the side effects of prescription medications on myself and others are much greater than I had ever anticipated. The deeper I dig into my subconscious, the further back I find that the impact was created. Most of us are taught at a young age to take medicine when we don’t feel well. Stomach ache, headache, sore throat, fever, even the imaginary boo boo is given a pill to cure. As we age we begin to reach for pills due to …

Single-Molecule Pulldown (Simpull) For Detection Of Gpcr Complexes In Mammalian Cells, Julie M. Kraft

Theses and Dissertations

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) constitute the most numerous and diverse superfamily of cell membrane receptors. While GPCRs can perform signal transduction as monomers, evidence suggests they also function as homo- and hetero- dimers and oligomers. These diverse quaternary structures can affect GPCRs’ downstream cellular signaling, pharmacological properties, and regulation of internalization.

The single-molecule pulldown (SiMPull) assay combines a co-immunoprecipitation assay with single-molecule total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy and can be used to probe the stoichiometry of GPCR oligomers in mammalian cells.

This project replicates the SiMPull assay by confirming the quaternary structure of mGluR2 homodimers. Plasmid constructs SNAP-mGluR2-HA and …

Capiz Reborn: Preserving And Enhancing Traditional Philippine Shellcraft, Destarte A. Prieto Jan 2024

Capiz Reborn: Preserving And Enhancing Traditional Philippine Shellcraft, Destarte A. Prieto

Theses and Dissertations

The capiz shell is a thin, translucent exoskeleton of a mollusk found in the Philippine Sea. Traditionally, capiz shells were made into window panes and home decor, used so widely they became an iconic part of Philippine identity. Today, the influx of cheap, mass-produced merchandise threatens the capiz shell industry. To encourage renewed interest and sustainable revival of this long-standing industry, my research demonstrates new possibilities for the capiz shell.

In reconstituting cast-off bits and shell trimmings to form a new capiz biomaterial, my work is informed by the three traditional techniques used by Philippine capiz artisans—sewing, welding and bonding. …

Call For Me When You Get There: I'Ll Be Among The Crows, Jessica O. Tifase Jan 2024

Call For Me When You Get There: I'Ll Be Among The Crows, Jessica O. Tifase

Theses and Dissertations

I've always been intrigued by the ways in which the notion of flight has been used to describe the movement of Black people, both literally and figuratively. In many instances, flight performs as a double entendre, embodying multiple meanings: to escape or to transcend. The fluidity of its definition prompts a reflection I’ve been wrestling with as I move through the world: Are Black people in a perpetual state of flight?

In my thesis exhibition, Call for Me When You Get There, I use the precarious state of flight as a means to explore the complicated choreography necessary for navigating …

Asymmetric Cuh-Catalyzed Reductive Coupling Of Allenamides With Carbonyl And Imine Electrophiles, Stephen Collins Jan 2024

Asymmetric Cuh-Catalyzed Reductive Coupling Of Allenamides With Carbonyl And Imine Electrophiles, Stephen Collins

Theses and Dissertations

The carbon scaffold of many drugs and natural products contain multiple stereogenic centers bearing heteroatoms. As a result of this, chemists have long sought methods to efficiently install these multi-heteroatom functionalities. Reductive coupling reactions have been extensively studied over the past decades, and the allylation of carbonyls via the reductive coupling approach has been a key method for generating chiral allylic alcohols. This work utilizes inexpensive Cu for the asymmetric reductive coupling of allenamides with carbonyls or imines to simultaneously install two heteroatoms (either oxygen and nitrogen or nitrogen and nitrogen, respectively) onto the product. These molecules have a polarity …
