Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) has expressed significant concerns over the use of physical restraints in older people across diverse aged care settings. Following an extensive analysis of the available literature, the IPA's Early Career Network (ECN) has formulated a collection of evidence-based recommendations aimed at guiding the use of physical restraints within various care contexts and demographic groups. Physical restraints not only infringe upon human rights but also raise significant safety concerns that adversely impact the physical, psychological, social, and functional well-being of older adults. Furthermore, their effectiveness in geriatric settings remains inadequate. Given these considerations, the IPA and …

What Goes In And What Comes Out: A Scoping Review Of Regenerative Agricultural Practices, Rebecca Voisin, Pierre Horwitz, Stephanie Godrich, Ros Sambell, Katherine Cullerton, Amanda Devine
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This scoping review examined peer-reviewed and gray literature to explore what a “no-to-low external input” statement means for regenerative agriculture. Five organic amendment inputs (compost extract, manure, mulch, biochar, food systems waste) and four land management processes (livestock management and integration, crop diversity, tillage reduction, comprehensive approach) were identified. Findings include “no-to-low external input” models arising from processes which function to displace external inputs (e.g., synthetic fertilizer). Organic amendment inputs and regenerative land management processes promote biology and improve nutrient cycling at soil, farm, and landscape scales. Regenerative agriculture overlaps with other farming practices including those associated with agroecology and …

Exploring The Social Impact Of The Short-Stay Market (Ssm) In Regional Areas: An Empirical Study, Emeka Ndaguba, Kerry Brown, Dora Marinova, Uma Jogulu
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The discourse on microentrepreneurs and their involvement in the short stay market (SSM) was non-existent until 2008. While several concepts and constructs have been developed and empirically tested since 2009, many of them relate to economics, leaving the social, cultural, and environmental factors underdeveloped. Thus, this study aimed to fill the gap and identify and assess the social impact of the short-stay market (SSM) in a regional area. The study included 16 face-to-face interview sessions conducted with 18 participants, and the Leximancer software was employed to analyse the data. The study revealed that the social impact on SSM is not …

A Grounded Theory About How Teachers Communicated High Expectations To Their Secondary School Students, Olivia Johnston, Helen Wildy, Jennifer Shand
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
High teachers’ expectations are associated with improved student academic achievement. However, no research explains how students experience their teachers’ expectations, from their points of view. A new theory was developed to achieve the study’s aim of accounting for how high expectations were experienced by 25 students in Western Australia. The findings offer educators student-focused perspectives of how to convey high teacher expectations that lead to improved student academic outcomes. Straussian grounded theory (Strauss, 1990) methods were used to generate substantive theory together with the Year 10 students in three Western Australian public schools, through data including more than 100 classroom …

The Use Of Experimental Designs To Examine Causality In Authentic Leadership: A Scoping Review, Ann Dadich, Ling Abbott, Andrei A. Lux, Kevin B. Lowe
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Authentic leadership studies are often criticised for the limited use of causally defined research designs. To advance scholarship is this area, this article presents a scoping review on the use of experimental designs to examine causality in authentic leadership. Eleven publications were identified, which presented 16 experiments that met the inclusion criteria. Generally, these experiments tested authentic leadership as an antecedent; were conducted online; used a one-factor design; involved large samples, typically of working adults or residents; involved a manipulation check; involved the use of written vignettes to manipulate levels of authentic leadership; included counterfactual conditions; culminated with outcomes pertaining …

Authentic Leadership: 20-Year Review Editorial, Andrei A. Lux, Kevin B. Lowe
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Our field has reached a critical juncture. Authentic leadership, which once promised to illuminate how leaders inspire and influence through genuine actions, has become mired in conceptual ambiguity and ideological bias. Much of the research is based on evaluations of behaviour conflated with antecedents and outcomes, presuming an oversimplified, positive view of authenticity. To advance, we must refocus on what authentic leaders actually do – their discrete behaviours – as signals of leadership. In this editorial, we redefine authentic leadership through signalling theory to address unresolved critiques and provide a platform for meaningful progress. We then summarise and synthesise the …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Movement of animals, habitat connectivity, and nutrient transport are key elements in the ecological functioning of coral reef ecosystems. However, most studies have focused on the diurnal component of these aspects; nocturnal patterns are less known. Our study aims to address this knowledge gap by assessing diel movement patterns in ecologically and commercially important nocturnal coral reef fishes. We evaluate 122-days of acoustic telemetry data from 4 nocturnal species in 2 coral reef fish families (Haemulidae and Lutjanidae) on the Great Barrier Reef. For all species, we found a clear division between daytime resting areas on the reef and a …

Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) has already proven to be an effective multiple access scheme for 5th Generation (5G) wireless networks. It provides improved performance in terms of system throughput, spectral efficiency, fairness, and energy efficiency (EE). However, in conventional NOMA networks, performance degradation still exists because of the stochastic behavior of wireless channels. To combat this challenge, the concept of Intelligent Reflecting Surface (IRS) has risen to prominence as a low-cost intelligent solution for Beyond 5G (B5G) networks. In this paper, a modeling primer based on the integration of these two cutting-edge technologies, i.e., IRS and NOMA, for B5G wireless …

Leveraging Finite-Precision Errors In Chaotic Systems For Enhanced Image Encryption, B. M. El-Den, Saad Aldosary, Haitham Khaled, Tarek M. Hassan, Walid Raslan
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This research explores the application of chaotic systems in generating pseudo-random numbers for encryption protocols, offering a novel perspective on addressing the challenges posed by limited computer precision in cryptographic applications. Chaotic systems, while promising for encryption, often suffer from degradation in their chaotic properties when implemented on computers with finite precision. Previous studies have primarily aimed to mitigate this issue, with limited consideration of harnessing finite-precision errors as a potential source of randomness. In this study, we propose an innovative encryption method that leverages finite-precision errors within chaotic systems. The algorithm generates a keystream based on lower bound error …

Optimizing Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy In Heart Failure Patients With Prolonged Qrs Duration: Insights Into Electrical And Mechanical Dyssynchrony, Zhisheng Chen, Lois Balmer, Xuerui Tan
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Heart failure (HF) represents a critical stage of cardiac disease, associated with high morbidity and mortality. Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) has become a pivotal treatment for HF patients with prolonged QRS duration. This therapy employs a biventricular pacing system to correct cardiac electromechanical dyssynchrony, thereby improving cardiac function, symptoms, and prognosis. Numerous clinical trials have consistently highlighted the benefits of CRT in this subgroup, leading to its unanimous recommendation in clinical practice guidelines. However, a significant proportion of patients do not achieve an adequate therapeutic response, despite adherence to these guidelines. As CRT treats patients by correcting cardiac electromechanical dyssynchrony, …

Optimizing Resistance Training For Sprint And Endurance Athletes: Balancing Positive And Negative Adaptations, Bas Van Hooren, Per Aagaard, Anthony J. Blazevich
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Resistance training (RT) triggers diverse morphological and physiological adaptations that are broadly considered beneficial for performance enhancement as well as injury risk reduction. Some athletes and coaches therefore engage in, or prescribe, substantial amounts of RT under the assumption that continued increments in maximal strength capacity and/or muscle mass will lead to improved sports performance. In contrast, others employ minimal or no RT under the assumption that RT may impair endurance or sprint performances. However, the morphological and physiological adaptations by which RT might impair physical performance, the likelihood of these being evoked, and the training program specifications that might …

Where Are The Diverse Families In Australian Children’S Literature? Impacts And Consideration For Language And Literacy In The Early Years, Helen Adam, Sally Murphy, Yvonne Urquhart, Katira Ahmed
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
A lack of representation of diverse families in children’s books can affirm insecurities and contribute to a sense of “otherness”. This study reports on the representation of family diversity in award-listed Australian children’s picture books. A critical theoretical framework was employed to analyse both texts and images. This study found a lack of diverse family structures in children’s books, especially LGBTIQA+, foster, step and blended families. This paper argues that to ensure inclusive and equitable literacy learning opportunities for all, educators need to go beyond award-listed books when selecting books for early literacy environments.
