The Impact Of Sustainability Initiatives On Corporate Culture: Bord Bia., Feride Baş

Business ETD Collections

This study focuses on the relationship between sustainability practices and culture in Bord Bia, the Irish Food Board, with a clear objective of studying the effects of these practices on environmental, economic and social sustainability. Using literature review and expert interviews, the study determine what organizational cultural values and practices enable sustainable practices within the organization. In the case of Bord Bia, the paper suggests that most of the sustainability goals focused on the organization’s people and practices, especially those under the Origin Green programme, have been the catalyst towards reestablishing that corporates value long-term environmental and economic wellbeing. However, …

Analyzing The Impact Of Negative Publicity About Employee Turnover On Customer Loyalty: A Case Study Of Amazon., Nyambane Abedinego Nyambwengi

Business ETD Collections

This study examines the effect of negative publicity regarding employee turnover on customer loyalty, focusing on Amazon. Using in-depth interviews and surveys, the research highlights how social media platforms, particularly Facebook, and digital communication have facilitated the spread of negative information about Amazon's high employee turnover. While findings suggest that persistent negative media coverage could erode customer confidence over time, no statistical correlation between high turnover, negative publicity, and customer loyalty was established due to an insufficient sample size. The study recommends robust public relations strategies to protect corporate reputation and contributes to the understanding of how internal organisational issues …

Evaluating Mcdonald’S Sustainability Practices: Real Commitment Or Greenwashing?, Lorena Elizabeth Alonso De León Jan 2024

Evaluating Mcdonald’S Sustainability Practices: Real Commitment Or Greenwashing?, Lorena Elizabeth Alonso De León

Business ETD Collections

This study critically examines McDonald's sustainability claims and practices, focusing on its greenhouse gas emissions and beef consumption. Through secondary research, the study contrasts McDonald's sustainable initiatives with data from reputable sources and climate institutions. While McDonald's has set a net-zero emissions target for 2050, its position as one of the largest beef buyers, contributing 1-2% of global beef consumption, undermines these efforts. The company’s approach to achieving net-zero emissions is described as vague and unattainable without significant changes to its plant-based menu, agricultural practices, and consumer awareness. The findings highlight a gap between McDonald’s sustainability claims and its operational …

Investigating Drought Response And Paleoclimate Potential Of A New Network Of White Oak Chronologies In Western Kentucky, Usa, Audrey J. Heichelbech, Maegen L. Rochner, Megan Gibson

Undergraduate Research Events

In Kentucky, historic and paleo-climate data are limited, and current understanding of long-term climate change in the state relies on instrumental data spanning only 1895-present. Proxy data are necessary to extend the temporal and spatial span of climate information. One potential proxy source for Kentucky is tree ring data, but currently, only four such datasets are publicly available on the International Tree Ring Data Bank (ITRDB). Archaeological and archival timber sources may help to fill in this gap. In the 1940s, Florence Hawley-Ellis, the first woman dendrochronologist, collected samples of white oak (Quercus alba L.) from four counties in western …

Characterizing Leaf Endophyte Composition In The Dune Grass Ammophila Breviligulata, Nabaa Majeed, Sarah Hobbs, Sarah Emery, Connor Morozumi, Natalie Christian

Undergraduate Research Events

Microorganisms living within plants play crucial roles in their health and function, yet these diverse communities that make up the plant microbiome remain poorly understood. The dune grass Ammophila breviligulata. is an ecosystem engineer which helps to build and stabilize dune ecosystems effectively acting as a buffer against storms to coastal communities. It is currently unknown whether the Ammophila microbiome plays a role in this plant species’ ability to transform dune ecosystems.. In this study, we assessed fungal diversity of endophytes—microbes living within plant tissues— in Ammophila leaves collected from Leelanau State Park, MI along the eastern shores of Lake …

A Mixed Methods Investigation Into Latino Fathers' Roles In Their Children's Educational Expectations, Jordan A. Arellanes, Kyle Miller, Eric D. Wesselmann

Faculty Publications – Psychology

Latino fathers make meaningful contributions toward their children’s educational expectations. Cultural factors and structural barriers may shape unique parenting roles for Latino fathers and their influence on their children’s educational expectations. To explore the culturally nuanced roles of Latino fathers, we conducted a convergent mixed-methods study with 244 emerging adults to gain their perceptions of their fathers’ parenting roles and how those roles influenced the relation between the fathers’ and emerging adult children’s educational expectations. A content analysis of qualitative data identified positive (e.g. motivation and emotional support) and negative roles (e.g. family absence and overworking) that participants perceived their …

Predicting Radiation-Induced Immune Suppression In Lung Cancer Patients Treated With Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy, Jonathan Colen, Cam Nguyen, Seth W. Liyanage, Eric Aliotta, Joe Chen, Clayton Alonso, Kara Romano, Sean Peach, Timothy Showalter, Paul Read, James Larner, Krishni Wijesooriya Jan 2024

Predicting Radiation-Induced Immune Suppression In Lung Cancer Patients Treated With Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy, Jonathan Colen, Cam Nguyen, Seth W. Liyanage, Eric Aliotta, Joe Chen, Clayton Alonso, Kara Romano, Sean Peach, Timothy Showalter, Paul Read, James Larner, Krishni Wijesooriya

Data Science Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is known to modulate the immune system and contribute to the generation of anti-tumor T cells and stimulate T cell infiltration into tumors. Radiation-induced immune suppression (RIIS) is a side effect of radiation therapy that can decrease immunological function by killing naive T cells as well as SBRT-induced newly created effector T cells, suppressing the immune response to tumors and increasing susceptibility to infections.

PURPOSE: RIIS varies substantially among patients and it is currently unclear what drives this variability. Models that can accurately predict RIIS in near real time based on treatment plan characteristics …

Blue Carbon Law, Adam D. Orford Jan 2024

Blue Carbon Law, Adam D. Orford

Scholarly Works

This Article explores the emerging law of blue carbon, defined as rules governing human interventions into Earth’s marine carbon cycles. Blue carbon law is of growing importance today as pressure mounts to incorporate coastal conservation and restoration activities into market-based carbon sequestration schemes, and as the planet’s deep oceans are evaluated for their carbon sequestration potential. The Article conceptualizes two broad trends in blue carbon law: the international law of carbon credit markets creating incentives to commodify and monetize blue carbon resources; and the responsive integration of commodification concepts into existing laws that already manage and influence blue carbon systems. …

National Identity And Economic Development In Market-Dominant Small Jurisdictions, Christopher M. Bruner Jan 2024

National Identity And Economic Development In Market-Dominant Small Jurisdictions, Christopher M. Bruner

Scholarly Works

Small jurisdictions that are globally competitive in providing cross-border financial services—market-dominant small jurisdictions (MDSJs)—occupy fascinating and unique positions in global markets, reflecting the complexity of their linkages with major economies. This article explores how the distinctive features of MDSJs highlight important dimensions of the relationship between national identity and economic development. I review literatures that aim to explain how jurisdictions behave in the economic context, focusing on concepts of nationalism, national identity, and nation branding, and how such phenomena might impact one another. I then assess their application to the relationship between national identity and economic development in MDSJs, where …

Another Round For Petrella V. Mgm, Laches, And Raging Bull: Resolving The Circuit Split Over Copyright’S Statute Of Limitations, David E. Shipley Jan 2024

Another Round For Petrella V. Mgm, Laches, And Raging Bull: Resolving The Circuit Split Over Copyright’S Statute Of Limitations, David E. Shipley

Scholarly Works

There is a split between the Second Circuit and the Ninth and Eleventh Circuits over the interpretation and application of the Copyright Act’s three-year statute of limitations. The disagreement is about whether it bars a copyright infringement plaintiff from recovering for infringing acts occurring outside the statute’s three-year window. The Second Circuit stated in 2020 in Sohm v. Scholastic that the U.S. Supreme Court explicitly delimited damages to the three years prior to the commencement of an infringement action. However, the Ninth Circuit in Starz Entertainment in 2022 and the Eleventh Circuit Nealy v. Warner Chappell Music in 2023 both …

Gender-Based Violence And Harassment At Sea, Desiree Leclercq Jan 2024

Gender-Based Violence And Harassment At Sea, Desiree Leclercq

Scholarly Works

This Symposium contribution assesses the ability of international law to evolve to offer essential protections for workers in an increasingly globalized world. It focuses on protections for women seafarers, specifically around gender-based violence and harassment on board vessels. Even though it is the world’s oldest transnational sector, seafaring remains overwhelmingly male-dominated. Consequently, international law was not initially conceived with women seafarers in mind. Now that women have broken into the maritime profession, they count on international law to evolve in kind. Notwithstanding, they continue to face sexist, if not violent, workplaces, and report high incidents of gender-based violence and harassment …

Survey Of Capital Cases In Georgia, Jessica Heywood Jan 2024

Survey Of Capital Cases In Georgia, Jessica Heywood

Scholarly Works

This Article examines five cases decided during the Survey period: two decisions by the Supreme Court of Georgia and three decisions by federal courts involving Georgia defendants. The Georgia Supreme Court cases are a direct appeal and a habeas appeal. All three federal cases are habeas petitions by Georgia state prisoners. We included federal cases because they involve significant points of law and illustrate the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit’s continued lax oversight of habeas claims, decades after the passage of the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act (AEDPA) by Congress. The small number of cases …

Coalescence: A Carnivore Coexistence Curriculum That Braids Indigenous & Western Ecological Knowledge Into A Relevant And Experiential Learning Opportunity For Youth, Stephanie Anne Barron

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

As grizzly bears (Ursus arctos horriblis) begin to reoccupy more of their historic range, and as humans and large carnivore populations continue to increase, incidences of human carnivore conflict are on the rise. A decolonial curriculum designed in collaboration with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribe’s wildlife biologists stands to increase awareness of Indigenous ecological knowledge and teach youth about the importance of coexistence with carnivores. Additionally, this project could greatly influence youth perceptions of grizzly bears and other large carnivores. This research project examines the development and implementation of a carnivore coexistence curriculum for youth that is guided by …

Women Objectifying Women: The Impact Of Social Power, Sarah E. Attaway Jan 2024

Women Objectifying Women: The Impact Of Social Power, Sarah E. Attaway

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Objectification Theory (OT) states that women’s humanity is reduced to being a physical object whose sole purpose is to give men physical pleasure; OT explains why men objectify women, and why women objectify themselves, but does not explain why women objectify other women (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997). Research has found that participants primed to experience high- or low-power objectified others in a work relationship more than those primed to experience equal-power (Schaerer et al., 2018). The current study aimed to examine if this finding would replicate to women engaging in sexual and beauty objectification and dehumanization towards other women. 330 …

Breathing Hard In Beautiful Places, Lars Chinburg Jan 2024

Breathing Hard In Beautiful Places, Lars Chinburg

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Chinburg, Lars, M.S., Spring 2024

Breathing Hard in Beautiful Places, Abstract

In Breathing Hard in Beautiful Places, Lars Chinburg explores his connections to the people and places that have made him who he is in a collection of personal essays. The collection is inspired by the talents of many writers–Bill Bryson’s wry travel observations, Norman Maclean’s lyricism on the interplay of nature and family, Sigurd Olson’s gorgeous descriptions of place, and David Sedaris’ knack for drawing hilarity out of the prosaic, among many others.

Many of the essays touch on the power of play as a force for good and …

Retrospective And Interactive Analyses Of Parent-Adolescent Storytelling About Alcohol, Kiersten Marie Falck Jan 2024

Retrospective And Interactive Analyses Of Parent-Adolescent Storytelling About Alcohol, Kiersten Marie Falck

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Parent-child communication about alcohol is a beneficial method for protecting adolescents against the risks of alcohol use, and may be particularly helpful among adolescents in the athletic community, where membership is a risk factor for alcohol use. Communicated Narrative Sense-Making theory (CNSM) was used as a guiding framework to ask 10 parent-adolescent dyads in youth sports to jointly tell a story about alcohol. Analyses were conducted thematically as well as through quantitative coding of Interactional Sense-Making (ISM) behaviors. Results show that in joint storytelling about alcohol in this study, parents often communicated tragedy, sought out their child’s thoughts about alcohol, …

The Role Of Face Threats In Understanding Target’S Interpretation Of A Tease, Shawn M. Deegan Jan 2024

The Role Of Face Threats In Understanding Target’S Interpretation Of A Tease, Shawn M. Deegan

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Teasing is a common phenomenon used across the lifespan, but what teasing is and what makes it prosocial or antisocial is strongly contested. This study argues that viewing teasing as a communication strategy helps researchers focus on the content of the teasing message. Goffman’s Facework Theory was used to explore negative and positive face threats, redressive signals, and relational closeness to help explain why the tease is seen as prosocial or antisocial. In an experimental study, participants were asked to take turns engaging in a teasing game about elements of the other’s identity. The study found that negative face threat …

Effects Of Mortality Risk And Ecological Conditions On Songbird Movement, Foraging, Parental Care, And Body Mass Management, Timothy Robert Forrester Jan 2024

Effects Of Mortality Risk And Ecological Conditions On Songbird Movement, Foraging, Parental Care, And Body Mass Management, Timothy Robert Forrester

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Examining why species vary in behavior and life history strategies is a fundamental part of ecology and evolution. Yet, due to the difficulties of quantifying behavior in the field, we know surprisingly little about how species spend their time and energy daily, why interspecific differences occur, and what are the physiological and demographic consequences of these differences. In this dissertation, I use songbirds to examine the influence of ultimate selection pressures (e.g., mortality risk) and proximate ecological conditions (e.g., temperature) on foraging and reproductive behavior. I also examine the influence of reproductive behaviors on fitness correlates (e.g., body mass, reproductive …

Hajj (Pilgrimage): Encountering God In Indonesia, Pham Van Doan Sj Jan 2024

Hajj (Pilgrimage): Encountering God In Indonesia, Pham Van Doan Sj

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

Believing that the Holy Spirit is at work in other religions, the Catholic Church rejects nothing that is true and holy in them. Thus, the Church teaches Catholics to respect the truth and goodness in other religions. The Church guides them to edify these religions by understanding their teachings under the full light of truth. These teaching enabled me to encounter God in what is true and holy in other religiouns, namely Islam in Indonesia with the APTEP 2024. Reciprocally, my experiences during this pilgrimage to a predominantly Muslim land gave me a deeper understanding of teachings in both Islam …

Echoes Of Muslim-Christian Disputes In Early Islam: A Theological Exchange And Its Lasting Influence, Isodorus Bangkit Susetyo Adi Sj Jan 2024

Echoes Of Muslim-Christian Disputes In Early Islam: A Theological Exchange And Its Lasting Influence, Isodorus Bangkit Susetyo Adi Sj

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

This paper explores the theological exchanges between early Muslim scholars and Nestorian and Monophysite Christian theologians in the unique and pivotal 9th century CE. It highlights how these interactions shaped Christian and Islamic theology. First, the study examines the socio-historical context of early Islam, focusing on debates regarding the oneness of God and the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. It analyzes arguments from both sides, illustrating how Muslim critics challenged Christian theologians to express their faith and theology in a more Arabic-friendly manner. On the other hand, it will also show how the rationalistic argument used by Muslim and Christian …
