Discursive Practices In Recurring Asynchronous Writing Center Consultations, Olalekan T. Adepoju
Discursive Practices In Recurring Asynchronous Writing Center Consultations, Olalekan T. Adepoju
The Writing Center Journal
This study explores the discursive practices the researcher utilizes during recurring asynchronous writing consultations to engender mutually adjusted and context-driven interactions meaningful to writers’ development during virtual tutoring. While earlier studies have critiqued asynchronous tutoring for its inability to efficiently promote the writing center philosophy, the inevitability of writing centers’ transition to online modes due to the global COVID-19 pandemic warrants that writing center scholarship rethink the effectiveness of these online spaces. This study utilizes a discourse-analytic approach to analyze textual data collected from both WCONLINE and drafts I, the tutor, worked on. Individual interviews are also collected to ascertain …

Stand Up And Be Counted: Using Traffic Cameras To Assess Voting Behavior In Real Time, Bryce J. Dietrich, Hyein Ko, Payel Sen
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Despite their ubiquity, few have used traffic camera networks for social science research. Using 1,312,977 images collected from 768 London-based cameras leading up to the 2015 UK general election, this study not only demonstrates how traffic camera data can be used to effectively measure same-day turnout, but we also provide ways such data can be used to assess political behavior more broadly. Such automated enumeration is especially important in countries where official results are only returned for the current election, making it difficult for those interested in assessing turnout at lower levels of aggregation, even when those elections are next …

Integrated Virtual Reality For A Motivating And Effectual Language-Learning Experience, Spencer L. Galvan, Amy Hardy, Jo Dee Duncan-Mosier
Indiana STEM Education Conference
The increased globalization of STEM fields and the resulting needed multilingualism provide ample reason to infuse language classrooms with responsive and immersive technologies. Furthermore, technology has proven to be a powerful resource to motivate students, regardless of the field. Early results show that the use of immersive technology positively affects both motivation and retention, and that students desire these types of technology and resources in more of their courses.

Elementary Preservice Teachers' Conceptions And Ability To Develop And Assess Integrated Stem Lessons, Jelena Byers, Selina Bartels
Indiana STEM Education Conference
Elementary teacher preparation programs prepare their pre-service teachers (PSTs) to teach STEM. In this study, two teacher educators in the disciplines of science and mathematics utilized a modified “Draw a Science Teacher” (DASTT-C) framework (Thomas et al., 2001) and the Understanding by Design (UbD) framework (Wiggins & McTighe, 2005) to understand PSTs' conceptions of integrated STEM and how they plan and assess their lessons. This research brief discusses some of the results of 16 PSTs’ pre- and post-DASTT-C results as well as analysis of STEM lesson plans written during their third-year pre-service program.

Clcweb Call For Papers: Ai And/As Form
Clcweb Call For Papers: Ai And/As Form
CLCWeb Calls for Papers
We are now several years into the growing interest in “generative AI” that followed the introduction of transformer-based Large Language Models (LLMs) and text-to-image generators (Stable Diffusion, DALL-E), and more than a year from the explosive public release of ChatGPT on November 30, 2022. This special issue of CLCWeb is about how theorists and analysts of culture are approaching formal questions in the context of technologies of machine learning and generative AI, and, also, conversely, about how to theorize AI’s forms.
We seek contributions to these debates that address the question of AI and/as form, with the term “form” …

Clcweb Call For Papers: Keywords For Value And Culture
CLCWeb Calls for Papers
This special issue asks why the uptake of value-form theory has been so great among Marxist literary and cultural critics. As the editors of After Marx: Literature, Theory, and Value (2022) have persuasively argued, recent years have seen a “collective rethinking of what a Marxist approach to literature might be and do”, one that responds to economic and cultural trends dating back to the 1960s. And yet, while a conjunctural analysis helps clarify the disciplinary context, we seek to address a more capacious conceptual overlap between aesthetic theory and value-form theory. The emphasis on form, for example, suggests a more …

Applying A Sociopolitical Equity Framework To A Developmental Algebra Curriculum, Sarah Oppland-Cordell, Natalie Mcgathey, David Feikes, William S. Walker Iii, Brandon Sorge
Indiana STEM Education Conference
The Thinking With Algebra (TWA) curriculum, a National Science Foundation Project (DUE 2021414), applies a sociopolitical equity framework (Gutiérrez, 2012) to strengthen student participants’ mathematics achievement outcomes and mathematics identity development. Instructor and student data indicate improvements in these two dimensions. This project also expands knowledge about creating equitable math learning environments that support underrepresented students’ mathematical success.

Harmonizing Stem And Social Justice Mathematics: A Path To Global Equity And Empowerment, Rose Mbewe
Indiana STEM Education Conference
This study delves into the interconnectedness of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and social justice mathematics (SJM) to address pressing equitable global sustainable development and social justice issues. The research aims to understand how educators can effectively use SJM in STEM teaching to empower students as change agents for global equity by aligning mathematical tasks with the United Nations' 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (UN, 2015) and using them to address real-world injustices. The study unveils educators' pedagogical strategies for creating supportive learning environments and nurturing students' emotional well-being in STEM subjects. Educators who are conscious of social …

Thinking With Algebra (TWA) is a National Science Foundation Project (DUE 2021414) to develop a post-secondary curriculum for intermediate algebra. TWA focuses on six elements that align with building algebraic fluency with conceptual understanding, a mixed review approach, small-group work, and whole-class discussion (Feikes, et al., 2021). Using an equity lens (Oppland-Cordell et al., 2023), TWA is designed for students, including underrepresented students, who need additional mathematical supports at the college level. Seventeen college math instructors attended a workshop on the lessons and pedagogy in order to use TWA in their college courses. Feedback from instructors participating in the TWA …

Management of the raccoon rabies virus variant in North America is conducted primarily using oral rabies vaccination (ORV). When a sufficient proportion of the population is vaccinated (60%), rabies transmission can be eliminated. To date, ORV programs have successfully controlled and eliminated raccoon rabies in rural areas, but there has been less success in urban areas. We studied the proportions of rabies virus neutralizing antibodies (RVNA) in a raccoon (Procyon lotor) population during a 3-year ORV trial in developed areas of Burlington, Vermont, United States. We used a modified N-mixture model to estimate raccoon abundance, RVNA seroprevalence, and …

Invasive wild pigs (Sus scrofa) are a reservoir for over 100 viral, bacterial, and parasitic pathogens that are transmissible to humans, livestock, domestic animals, and wildlife in North America. Numerous historical local surveys and results from a nation-wide survey (2006–2010) indicated that wild pigs in the United States act as reservoirs for Trichinella spp. and Toxoplasma gondii, two zoonotic pathogens of importance for human and animal health. Since that time, wild pig populations have expanded and increased in density in many areas. Population expansion of wild pigs creates opportunities for the introduction of pathogens to new areas …

1. Diseases occurring at low prevalence in free-ranging wildlife can be difficult to study and predict at a landscape scale. This problem is compounded by imperfect pathogen detection.
2. We used data from multiple surveillance methods to determine factors influencing spread of a low-prevalence disease, bovine tuberculosis (bTB), among white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in a bTB endemic area over a 10-year period. We fit dynamic occupancy models to predict spatial spread of bTB through a county in Michigan, USA, within the bTB endemic area, while accounting for imperfect detection and a suite of ecological processes potentially driving bTB …

The purpose of this study was to determine if the number of pregnancies in naturally infected Brucella abortus-positive bison (Bison bison) cows would be reduced over a period of 5 yr after one treatment with 3000 mg gonadotropin-releasing hormone immunocontraceptive (GonaCon) compared to a similar group of naturally infected B. abortus-positive bison cows not treated with GonaCon. In each of the 5 yr, GonaCon-treated cows produced fewer offspring in relation to number of cows than the nontreated cows. Fisher’s Exact test comparing offspring produced during the first reproductive season showed a significant difference between the …
