Expanding Me Or Conserving Us? A Multi-Modal Study Of Post-Dissolution Self-Concept Recovery, Morgan A. Cope
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Previous research has demonstrated the deleterious effects of romantic relationship breakup on the self-concept and post-dissolution outcomes (Cope & Mattingly, 2021). However, individual differences in newly validated identity orientations (i.e., the preference to expand or conserve one’s sense of self; Hughes et al., 2020) may influence identity recovery. The current studies examined the influence of self-expansion preference on self-concept clarity and identity restoration mechanisms (i.e., relationship rekindling) following relationship dissolution using cross sectional (Study 1), intensive longitudinal (Study 2), and dynamical (Study 3) methods. Across studies, self-expansion preference emerged as a trait-level predictor of post-breakup experiences including self-concept clarity, distress, …

Identifying Areas At Risk Of Climate Gentrification In Tampa City, David Alexander Ramirez
Identifying Areas At Risk Of Climate Gentrification In Tampa City, David Alexander Ramirez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Gentrification describes rapid infrastructure development and investment in areas with lower income classes. It may cause potential erasure of the original neighborhood's unique culture and the displacement of residents. Due to rising sea levels and the increase in the frequency and intensity of storms, the inundation of Florida will increase as time passes. This creates an ironic relationship where historical coastal areas inhabited by an affluent population will move inland to historically lower-income populations. This thesis developed a Climate Gentrification Index (CGI) to identify areas at risk of gentrification caused by inundation of storm scenarios in Tampa City, Florida. Socioeconomic …

Flow-Mediated Navigation And Coordination Of Artificial Swimmers Using Deep Reinforcement Learning, Aishwarya Nair
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Aquatic organisms are able to achieve swimming efficiencies that are much higher than any underwater vehicle that has been designed by humans. This is mainly due to the adaptive swimming patterns that they display in response to changes in their environment and their behaviors, i.e., hunting, fleeing, or foraging. In this work, we explore these adaptations from a hydrodynamics standpoint, using numerical simulations to emulate self-propelled artificial swimmers in various flow fields. Apart from still or uniform flow, the most likely flow field encountered by swimmers are those formed by the wakes of solid objects, such as roots of aquatic …

Investigating A Cryptic Iron-Nitrogen Cycle In Lake Okeechobee Sediments`, Owen Silvera
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
The overall objective was to elucidate the effect of iron (Fe) on nitrogen (N) diagenesis in Lake Okeechobee. Somewhat counterintuitively, sediment ammonium (NH+4) inventories decreased during algal growth as dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) inventories increased. Whole core incubations were staged for denitrification experiments using isotopic N tracer. Core incubations showed the percentage of sediment N removal increase between summer (25 ± 21 %) and winter (39 ± 13 %). The amendment of Fe2+ enhanced this seasonal effect likely via dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA). The isotopic signature of N2 flux also suggested an additional, sedimentary, N2 source via Fe …

This comparative research identifies and analyzes recurring tropes in the novels Cobra (1972) by Cuban writer Severo Sarduy and La mucama de Omicunlé (2015) by Dominican writer Rita Indiana. Despite the years between the publication of these important Spanish-Caribbean works, they both reveal transformative processes through transgressive writing styles. Seemingly diverse, these novels present a similar plot: a series of violent events that surround the protagonists’ androgyny. Their stories bare a deeper significance as changes to the bodies provoke ruptures that unearth rhizomatic connections with the rest of the surrounding nature, which, of course, has its own histories, different from …
