Investigating Drought Response And Paleoclimate Potential Of A New Network Of White Oak Chronologies In Western Kentucky, Usa, Audrey J. Heichelbech, Maegen L. Rochner, Megan Gibson

Undergraduate Research Events

In Kentucky, historic and paleo-climate data are limited, and current understanding of long-term climate change in the state relies on instrumental data spanning only 1895-present. Proxy data are necessary to extend the temporal and spatial span of climate information. One potential proxy source for Kentucky is tree ring data, but currently, only four such datasets are publicly available on the International Tree Ring Data Bank (ITRDB). Archaeological and archival timber sources may help to fill in this gap. In the 1940s, Florence Hawley-Ellis, the first woman dendrochronologist, collected samples of white oak (Quercus alba L.) from four counties in western …

Characterizing Leaf Endophyte Composition In The Dune Grass Ammophila Breviligulata, Nabaa Majeed, Sarah Hobbs, Sarah Emery, Connor Morozumi, Natalie Christian

Undergraduate Research Events

Microorganisms living within plants play crucial roles in their health and function, yet these diverse communities that make up the plant microbiome remain poorly understood. The dune grass Ammophila breviligulata. is an ecosystem engineer which helps to build and stabilize dune ecosystems effectively acting as a buffer against storms to coastal communities. It is currently unknown whether the Ammophila microbiome plays a role in this plant species’ ability to transform dune ecosystems.. In this study, we assessed fungal diversity of endophytes—microbes living within plant tissues— in Ammophila leaves collected from Leelanau State Park, MI along the eastern shores of Lake …

Helping Students Make Meaningful Connections: A Cross-Sectional Survey Of College Student Loneliness, Alicia Wodika, Jacqueline Lanier, Jim Almeda, Aubrey Richter, Gabriella Schalasky

Faculty Publications – Health Sciences

Background

Young adults are experiencing high levels of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. At colleges and universities across the United States, programs exist to address student mental health needs exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Purpose

Current levels of loneliness among students (n = 487) at a Midwest university were researched to compare with previous trends and develop clearer recommendations for purposeful interventions.

Methods

This study utilized a cross-sectional study design with the UCLA Loneliness Scale during the fall 2022 semester.

Results

Higher levels of loneliness were linked to the demographics of identifying as cis-males, non-binary, and/or students of color. Students …

A Mixed Methods Investigation Into Latino Fathers' Roles In Their Children's Educational Expectations, Jordan A. Arellanes, Kyle Miller, Eric D. Wesselmann

Faculty Publications – Psychology

Latino fathers make meaningful contributions toward their children’s educational expectations. Cultural factors and structural barriers may shape unique parenting roles for Latino fathers and their influence on their children’s educational expectations. To explore the culturally nuanced roles of Latino fathers, we conducted a convergent mixed-methods study with 244 emerging adults to gain their perceptions of their fathers’ parenting roles and how those roles influenced the relation between the fathers’ and emerging adult children’s educational expectations. A content analysis of qualitative data identified positive (e.g. motivation and emotional support) and negative roles (e.g. family absence and overworking) that participants perceived their …

Blue Carbon Law, Adam D. Orford Jan 2024

Blue Carbon Law, Adam D. Orford

Scholarly Works

This Article explores the emerging law of blue carbon, defined as rules governing human interventions into Earth’s marine carbon cycles. Blue carbon law is of growing importance today as pressure mounts to incorporate coastal conservation and restoration activities into market-based carbon sequestration schemes, and as the planet’s deep oceans are evaluated for their carbon sequestration potential. The Article conceptualizes two broad trends in blue carbon law: the international law of carbon credit markets creating incentives to commodify and monetize blue carbon resources; and the responsive integration of commodification concepts into existing laws that already manage and influence blue carbon systems. …

National Identity And Economic Development In Market-Dominant Small Jurisdictions, Christopher M. Bruner Jan 2024

National Identity And Economic Development In Market-Dominant Small Jurisdictions, Christopher M. Bruner

Scholarly Works

Small jurisdictions that are globally competitive in providing cross-border financial services—market-dominant small jurisdictions (MDSJs)—occupy fascinating and unique positions in global markets, reflecting the complexity of their linkages with major economies. This article explores how the distinctive features of MDSJs highlight important dimensions of the relationship between national identity and economic development. I review literatures that aim to explain how jurisdictions behave in the economic context, focusing on concepts of nationalism, national identity, and nation branding, and how such phenomena might impact one another. I then assess their application to the relationship between national identity and economic development in MDSJs, where …

Another Round For Petrella V. Mgm, Laches, And Raging Bull: Resolving The Circuit Split Over Copyright’S Statute Of Limitations, David E. Shipley Jan 2024

Another Round For Petrella V. Mgm, Laches, And Raging Bull: Resolving The Circuit Split Over Copyright’S Statute Of Limitations, David E. Shipley

Scholarly Works

There is a split between the Second Circuit and the Ninth and Eleventh Circuits over the interpretation and application of the Copyright Act’s three-year statute of limitations. The disagreement is about whether it bars a copyright infringement plaintiff from recovering for infringing acts occurring outside the statute’s three-year window. The Second Circuit stated in 2020 in Sohm v. Scholastic that the U.S. Supreme Court explicitly delimited damages to the three years prior to the commencement of an infringement action. However, the Ninth Circuit in Starz Entertainment in 2022 and the Eleventh Circuit Nealy v. Warner Chappell Music in 2023 both …

Gender-Based Violence And Harassment At Sea, Desiree Leclercq Jan 2024

Gender-Based Violence And Harassment At Sea, Desiree Leclercq

Scholarly Works

This Symposium contribution assesses the ability of international law to evolve to offer essential protections for workers in an increasingly globalized world. It focuses on protections for women seafarers, specifically around gender-based violence and harassment on board vessels. Even though it is the world’s oldest transnational sector, seafaring remains overwhelmingly male-dominated. Consequently, international law was not initially conceived with women seafarers in mind. Now that women have broken into the maritime profession, they count on international law to evolve in kind. Notwithstanding, they continue to face sexist, if not violent, workplaces, and report high incidents of gender-based violence and harassment …

Survey Of Capital Cases In Georgia, Jessica Heywood Jan 2024

Survey Of Capital Cases In Georgia, Jessica Heywood

Scholarly Works

This Article examines five cases decided during the Survey period: two decisions by the Supreme Court of Georgia and three decisions by federal courts involving Georgia defendants. The Georgia Supreme Court cases are a direct appeal and a habeas appeal. All three federal cases are habeas petitions by Georgia state prisoners. We included federal cases because they involve significant points of law and illustrate the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit’s continued lax oversight of habeas claims, decades after the passage of the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act (AEDPA) by Congress. The small number of cases …

Approximately 2.38 billion people practice Christianity globally. This means that about one-third of the world's total population is Christian. On the other side, Muslims comprise more than 2 billion people worldwide; making Islam the second-largest religion in the world, exceeded only by Christianity. By learning about these figures, one may be interested in knowing more about these two Abrahamic and revealed religions. The truth is that Islam was established in the 7th AD. The existing Christian community found it important …

Growing As An Indonesian Ursuline Together With Muslim Friends, Nurhayati Wiguno Osu

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

The author's beautiful childhood experience in the dialogue of life, spiritual experience, and cooperation with Muslim friends became a strong foundation when choosing to live in a convent, where she must live 24 hours a day continuously with other Sisters of different backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities, and nationalities. Saint Angela's charism of siete piazzevole, the twofold of love, and contemplation in action can be a strength in realizing the Ursuline Mission to engage in dialogue to find new breakthroughs that can make us neighbors to others.

Immersion Seeking Faith Understanding - Aptep And Its Theological Method, Greg Soetomo Sj Jan 2024

Immersion Seeking Faith Understanding - Aptep And Its Theological Method, Greg Soetomo Sj

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

How do we construct and organize a step-by-step of doing theology in the context of dialogue with Islam? The answer to this question is neither singular nor uniform. One of the possible paths is through immersing into a Muslim community. From such encounters, explanations are formed, then reflected upon and written systematically in the light of Catholic faith teachings. The search of this theological method is based on the evaluation and reflection on the Asia Pacific Theological Encounter Program (APTEP) conducted from June 4 to 24, 2024, in Indonesia, particularly in three cities: Jakarta, Salatiga, and Yogyakarta. This four-week program, …

Joint Declaration Of Istiqlal 2024 Pope Francis & Grand Imam Umar, Renato Taib Oliveros Jan 2024

Joint Declaration Of Istiqlal 2024 Pope Francis & Grand Imam Umar, Renato Taib Oliveros

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

The Istiqlal Declaration states that our world is clearly facing two serious crises: dehumanization and climate change. A moderate Islam is the antidote to the global jihadist movement. If Christ's death on the cross for all is the basis of dignity for all human beings; Allah's choosing man as Khalifah (custodian) of His creation is the basis of dignity in Islam. As God's Khalifah is Islam's central tenet on climate change. The dignity extended by Allah to man ought to be extended to the rest of creation. Where is Christ in the Istiqlal Declaration? The words and actions of Jesus …

The Harlan Court: A Constitutional Alternate History, H. Jefferson Powell Jan 2024

The Harlan Court: A Constitutional Alternate History, H. Jefferson Powell

Faculty Scholarship

Walter Dellinger shared the widespread perception that the Burger Court was characterized by “rootless activism” rather than principled constitutional adjudication, and for him this put in question the legitimacy even of decisions that reached outcomes he thought politically or morally desirable. To explain what was wrong with such decisions, he often imagined the Court as it might have been if Justice John Marshall Harlan, who died in 1971, had lived another decade, and inspired an era of constitutional decisions deeply rooted in constitutional tradition and characterized by careful adherence to legal method. This Essay seeks to explain Dellinger’s idea and …

Sieving Silence: The Communal Question And The Archive Of Indian Constitutional History, Kanika Gauba Jan 2024

Sieving Silence: The Communal Question And The Archive Of Indian Constitutional History, Kanika Gauba

National Law School Journal

This paper shows how the archive of Indian constitutional history limits access to constitutional disagreement. It attempts an alternative framing of the issue of political safeguards for religious minorities (‘the communal question’) as a triangle of disagreement among the Sikhs, the Anglo‑Indians, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel. However, the task is complicated by the silence in the official archives on all three actors. If, as critical historians argue, silence is the very condition of the archive and the writing of history, this paper argues that the historian must ‘sieve’ the inevitably silent archives of Indian constitutional history for perturbations, follow …

Sovereignty, International Law, And The Princely States Of Colonial South Asia By Priyasha Saksena (Oxford University Press 2023), Aryan Tulsyan, Prabhash Ranjan

National Law School Journal

Sovereignty, International Law, and the Princely States of Colonial South Asia by Priyasha Saksena is a significant academic intervention into understanding South Asia. The author maps how the various actors—the princely states, the British Crown, the East India Company (the company), and the anti-colonial nationalists—used international law, especially the vernacular of sovereignty, to advance their arguments and achieve their goals during the colonial struggle.

The Supreme Court And The Challenges For Fiscal Federalism: Mineral Area Development Authority V Steel Authority Of India, Sanyukta Chowdhury, Amit Chowdhury Jan 2024

The Supreme Court And The Challenges For Fiscal Federalism: Mineral Area Development Authority V Steel Authority Of India, Sanyukta Chowdhury, Amit Chowdhury

National Law School Journal

This case comment analyses the 2024 Supreme Court judgement in Mineral Area Development Authority v Steel Authority of India, in which the court upheld the states’ power to tax mineral rights and mineral-bearing land. The authors discuss the issues involved, the approach of the bench towards interpretation, and the implications for the parties to the case and other stakeholders. They argue that while fiscal federalism is crucial to India’s constitutional scheme, the bench had limited leeway in deciding the case on this basis due to the absence of legal, doctrinal, and factual clarity.

Quasi-Democratic Imagination: How The Constituent Assembly Envisioned The Parliamentary Opposition, Rupak Kumar Jan 2024

Quasi-Democratic Imagination: How The Constituent Assembly Envisioned The Parliamentary Opposition, Rupak Kumar

National Law School Journal

Institutionalising parliamentary opposition ensures political pluralism, and an opposition needs constitutional protections to enable it to demand accountability and seek scrutiny over the executive. How did the Constituent Assembly of India envision the idea of parliamentary opposition? Did it take the issue seriously? Or, overshadowed by the burgeoning dominance of the Congress Party, was it apprehensive about providing constitutional space for the opposition? Some members of the assembly did demand that an institutional space be created to guarantee an effective opposition. But these demands were not given serious attention in the assembly. This paper argues that, in effect, the assembly …
