This course is an interdisciplinary survey that focuses on the issues of global health security. As shown in the COVID-19 pandemic, international trade and travel threaten epidemics by transporting and spreading infectious disease globally at jet speed. The growing risk of exposure to infectious diseases, coupled with the threat of intentional release of dangerous pathogens, creates a situation in which health and security are interacting with greater frequency and intensity. This development parallels efforts to redefine the concept of security to encompass new global challenges such as noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Harnessing Microbial Warfare To Identify Products Lethal To Pathogenic Free-Living Amoebae By Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Carrie Anne Flynn

Acanthamoeba castellanii is a free-living amoeba (FLA) that causes untreatable, fatal infections of the central nervous system. FLA are ubiquitous in the environment, where they graze upon bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We interrogated P. aeruginosa—under evolutionary pressure to defend against amoebal grazing—as a producer of amoebicidal compounds that could serve as leads for new and urgently needed drugs to treat amoeba infections in humans. To accomplish this, we developed novel methods to quantify killing of A. castellanii trophozoites, pseudocysts, and cysts. Together, these high throughput, reproducible, and extensively validated assays provide a robust platform to measure viability of all …

Armed political parties have contested elections in myriad democracies. However, prior scholarship does not conceptually distinguish these parties from other categories of organized violence, nor does existing research account for micro-level variation in armed parties’ attacks against partisan rivals. The first chapter in my dissertation conceptually-differentiates armed political parties from other forms of organized violence, including autonomous rebel organizations and party- backed riot networks. In the second chapter, I develop a micro-level theory which explains armed party violence against partisan rivals. I contend that armed parties’ pre- and post-election attacks against rivals intend to consolidate local monopolies over electoral competition …

This dissertation examines conflict, violence, and security data to provide systematic knowledge about three cutting-edge topics in international security. The first chapter of this dissertation analyzes cross-national battle-level observational data and American battlefield performance in Vietnam to investigate the effects of different military recruitment strategies on battlefield effectiveness. The analysis finds that conscript armies outperform their volunteer counterparts in standard casualty-based battlefield effectiveness metrics; this effect is further bolstered by democratic regime type and longer enlistment terms. The second chapter employs an original survey experiment fielded in mainland China to challenge the purported normative constraints on nuclear use in China …

The human intestine contains a large, complex, and dynamic community of microbes termed the microbiota, which is made up of hundreds of individual species populations. Certain community compositions are linked to health or disease in the human host, and substantial effort has been directed towards identifying methods of modulating the microbiota composition for therapeutic purposes. While many studies assess which species are present or fluctuate within the community, little is known about fluctuations within individual isogenic populations over time. This Article challenges the centuries-old reactive and past-oriented approach of international law. It suggests that while the reactive paradigm has facilitated practical solutions to the concrete problems faced by the international community, this paradigm has also led international law to become backward-looking and short-sighted, thereby hindering the discipline from acting in anticipation of long-term problems and developments.

For over a decade, cultural tightness-looseness (TL) has established itself as a culture construct that is useful in diverse contexts at multiple levels. While most TL research has focused on TL consequences, less attention has been paid to TL antecedents. This dissertation proposes resource increase as a TL predictor and uses a resource-based perspective to review and extend extant TL literature. I empirically examine the effect of resource increase on incremental and radical creativity as mediated by TL at the team level. In response to extensive foreign efforts to take advantage of U.S. scientific research, especially by the People’s Republic of China, the United States has taken steps to protect its scientific and technology efforts. Although steps to prevent foreign government exploitation of U.S. research are reasonable and justified, the United States should be cognizant of these actions' impact on collaboration with foreign scientists. It is in the interest of the United States to effect policy that fosters relationships with foreign scientists rather than push them away.

We analyze a range of future scenarios for Russia related to the Ukraine War. Although regime change is a publicly-stated objective for several leaders of NATO countries, we find very little prospect for it. The Russian economy has largely evaded the effects of the sanctions. Despite enormous casualties and incompetence in the management of the war, both Putin and the war remain popular with the Russian public. Contrary to most analysis to date, the Wagner Group mutiny of June 2023 is not an indication of Putin’s weakness, but his strength. The coercive mechanisms of the Russian state remain intact. The process of extracting structured data from unstructured and semi-structured text is manual, time consuming and error prone. Current natural language processing approaches for automating this process are difficult to verify for non-trivial and context-sensitive corpora. Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT have become a subject of considerable interest, opening a promising avenue of exploration. However, there is limited evidence on the performance of LLMs for information extraction.

This thesis examines how Simón Bolívar’s political thought on race, republicanism, and governance evolved during the Spanish American wars of independence. Early in his revolutionary career, Bolívar drew heavily from Enlightenment ideals, particularly those of Rousseau and Montesquieu, envisioning a future republic grounded in liberty, unity, and the rule of law. However, Bolívar’s initial writings reveal that he paid relatively little attention to the racial divisions that deeply fractured colonial society. Thus, his appeals for independence primarily focused on political subjugation and economic exploitation, reflecting both his Creole background and the broader colonial system’s blind spots.

Military systems require monitoring a wide frequency range of the RF spectrum to detect and monitor enemy targets. A vital component of that is calculating the direction of arrival of enemy radars. The use of compressive sensing architectures like the Nyquist Folding Receiver (NyFR) allow for computationally cheap capturing of wideband signals; however, these techniques make traditional direction of arrival (DOA) estimation techniques difficult.
