Ironic And Absurd Discourse Of Dress And Appearance On Social Media, Craig Hobin
Ironic And Absurd Discourse Of Dress And Appearance On Social Media, Craig Hobin
Major Papers by TMD Master of Science Students
The purpose of this paper is to interpret how absurdity can be ironic through dress and appearance. By using two popular culture examples, one contemporary and one from the 1990’s, I look at how existential philosophies impact comparisons to society and how their reactions of dress and appearance can be ironic. This paper discusses Lee Alexander McQueen and Austin Babbitt (AssPizza) to find the intersection of irony, absurdism, social comparison, and dress and appearance. These two examples prove irony can be interpreted through an understanding of existentialism and how one views society and if they draw comparisons to their peers. …

Discovering Previously Overlooked Sets Of Piano Compositions In 24 Major And Minor Keys By Four Russian Composers At The Turn Of The 20th Century, Eri Nakagawa
Journal of Urban Culture Research
At the turn of the 20th century, Russian composers Felix Blumenfeld, Anton Arensky, César Cui, and Reinhold Glière crafted sets of piano character pieces, notably the 24 Preludes op. 17 (1892), 24 Morceaux caractéristiques op. 36 (1894), 25 Préludes op. 64 (1903), and 25 Preludes op. 30 (published in 1906 - 1908), respectively. Blumenfeld mirrors the tonal organization of Chopin’s 24 Preludes, op. 28, while Arensky and Glière draw inspiration from Johann Sebastian Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier. Cui innovatively differs from Chopin’s scheme by sequencing minor key works before relative major ones. Both Cui and Glière’s sets encompass 25 preludes, …

Digital Activism Through Humour And Satire: An Analysis Of The Use Of Tiktok And X For Political Accountability In Uganda., Shemei Agabo
Digital Activism Through Humour And Satire: An Analysis Of The Use Of Tiktok And X For Political Accountability In Uganda., Shemei Agabo
Master of Arts in Digital Journalism
This study aimed to analyze the use of satire through TikTok and X networking sites as dialogue tools, specifically for political activism in Uganda. The study looked at the two communication platforms as avenues of expanding the civic space for the citizens, in a country faced with a lot of restrictions for legacy media and traditional online platforms. The study is significant because it analyzes how social media platforms can be used for political activism in a country like Uganda, ruled by stringent rules regarding speaking to power. The method of study was an exploratory study design and the qualitative …

Fragments Of Meaning: Modernist Translation And Its Impact On The Publishing Industry, Odett Terrazas
Fragments Of Meaning: Modernist Translation And Its Impact On The Publishing Industry, Odett Terrazas
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present
This thesis will explore the transformative impact of the modernist poets Pound, Eliot, and Yeats, on the generative art of translation. While traditional interpreters prior to the early 20th century sought fidelity to the source material, these modernists embraced malleability, adapting works like “The Seafarer”, “Anabasis”, and "King Oedipus" to contemporary sensibilities. Through a deconstructionist lens, this study will compare these pieces to their parent text and earlier translations, revealing a focus on subjectivity, cultural synthesis, and a departure from realism. Such a paradigm shift deviated from all former practices, prompting the publishing industry to commission conceptually and aesthetically engaged …

“Chieftain, Farewell”: Bishop Matthew Simpson’S Funeral Address To Abraham Lincoln, Samuel J. Rogal
“Chieftain, Farewell”: Bishop Matthew Simpson’S Funeral Address To Abraham Lincoln, Samuel J. Rogal
The Asbury Journal
This article reflects back on the historic oration by Methodist Bishop Matthew Simpson at the funeral of Abraham Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois in 1865. Matthew Simpson was one of the most prominent orators of his day and had built up political connections during the Lincoln Presidency. Bishop Simpson in many ways represents the rising respectability of Methodism in the United States as its influence grew and Methodism became more acceptable among society and in political circles. Simpson even represents a form of Christian nationalism which emerges from his funeral address and the way he portrays the “martyred” president.
The Trouble With Classifications, Aziz Z. Huq
The Trouble With Classifications, Aziz Z. Huq
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
The Supreme Court relies increasingly on anti-classification rules to implement the Constitution’s commands of even-handed state treatment. These rules direct attention to whether an instance of a forbidden classification is present on the face of a challenged law. They contain two necessary steps. First, a court defines a general category of impermissible terms. Second, a court ascertains whether an instance of the category is found in enacted text—triggering the familiar strict scrutiny analysis. So defined, anti-classification rules now dominate Equal Protection, Free Speech, ‘dormant’ Commerce Clause, and even Free Exercise jurisprudence. The Roberts Court celebrates them as “commonsense,” citing their …

The Challenges Of Decoding Russian Coercion, Cynthia A. Roberts
The Challenges Of Decoding Russian Coercion, Cynthia A. Roberts
Publications and Research
This review essay critically examines cultural explanations of deterrence and coercion, focusing on Dmitry Adamsky’s The Russian Way of Deterrence as the most important recent effort to explain Russian strategic behavior through the lens of strategic culture. While recognizing the book’s considerable strengths in describing Russian concepts, terminology, and practices of deterrence and coercion, the essay questions how much explanatory leverage culture actually provides. It argues that cultural approaches risk over-complexifying the Russian case while under-specifying causal relationships, and asks why distinctive strategic cultures do not produce greater variation in coercive behavior and outcomes. The essay contrasts cultural interpretation with …

Montana As Place Of (Un)Belonging: Landscape, Identity, And The American West In Bella Vista (2014), Najmeh Moradiyan-Rizi
Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications
The American West is not just a geographical terrain but a mythical construct that occupies a powerful place in the popular imagination thanks to myriad literary and artistic works that have presented the region through specific archetypes emphasizing its vast ruggedness, white masculinity, and unique Americanness. In recent decades, revisionist scholarly and artistic works, however, have attempted to offer more nuanced perspectives on the region challenging its assumed homogenous history and fixed and stable identity. In particular, women filmmakers have recast the region through multifaceted representations underlining its complexity, diversity, and transnational dimensions. This article analyzes Vera Brunner-Sung’s film Bella …

American Dream: Social Pressures And Lackluster Regulation Allow Multi-Level Marketing Companies To Function As De Facto Pyramid Schemes, Lindsay R. Maher
American Dream: Social Pressures And Lackluster Regulation Allow Multi-Level Marketing Companies To Function As De Facto Pyramid Schemes, Lindsay R. Maher
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
The entrepreneurial spirit goes to the heart of the American Dream. Pull yourself up by the bootstraps. Put your nose to the grindstone. If you could just be given the tools to get started, you, too, can make something of yourself with hard work and perseverance. This mindset drives millions of people each year to participate in Multi-Level Marketing companies (MLMs), which are advertised as an opportunity to start your own business, sell products, and work on your own schedule. MLMs are also designed to reward sellers each time they successfully encourage another person to join, so much so that …
Using Public Policy Citation Data In University Decision Making: Understanding, Sharing And Responsible Use, Euan Adie
Research Analytics Summit 2024
The 2018 Evidence Act has mandated US government departments and agencies to be much clearer about their research agendas and the engagement they want with academic researchers and institutions. Tracking those engagements has become easier as data providers increasingly supply information on policy engagement or policy citations, tracking where academics at an institution have been cited in or mentioned by name in government reports and policy documents at a local, state or federal level. This session covers the processes, policies and best practice you need to put in place to start using policy engagement data responsibly, both to track and …

Fascism: A Reading List With Notes, Michael F. Russo
Fascism: A Reading List With Notes, Michael F. Russo
Faculty Publications
Today, Fascism is on the rise around the world including, dismayingly, in the United States of America, threatening the rule of law, which is the basis of democracy. In the U. S. Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican nominee for president, has declared himself the standard bearer for authoritarian rule. If he wins, it is likely the United States will cease to be a democracy. If democracy is to survive, it is essential that citizens understand fascism, how it comes into existence, and what it does once it has taken root is essential. That is the reason for this reading list.

When Divergent Worlds Collide: Dr. Santiago Ramón Y Cajal’S Influence On The Surrealism Movement, William J. Hardman Iii, Md
MA Theses
Dr. Santiago Ramón y Cajal’s drawings were created for the sole purpose of illustrating his newly discovered and earth-shattering revelations in the field of neuroscience culminating with his magnum opus: the “Neuron theory” and the “Theory of Dynamic Polarization.” For these discoveries and many others, he shared the 1906 Nobel Prize in medicine and physiology with his rival Dr. Camilo Golgi, an Italian pathologist. At no time did he envision that his drawings would capture the interest of artists as it did with members of the Surrealism Movement. This thesis will explore and present for the first time supporting evidence …
Art And Entertainment Collaboration: The Benefits And Challenges Of Auction Houses Crossover Collaborations In The Global Art Market, Yushi Chen
MA Theses
Over the past decades, crossover collaboration has become increasingly important
in the contemporary art market as an effective strategy to reach a wholly new customer segment. This research focuses on the crossover collaboration between art and entertainment by exploring the partnerships between auction houses and singers. It uses a case study as a research methodology to analyze Sotheby’s partnerships with three famous singers, including Nigo, T.O.P., and Jay Chou, by which the auction house successfully entered the Asian art market. The research found that these examples have demonstrated Sotheby’s how has integrated crossover collaboration into its sustainable competitive advantages. The …
The Fourth World Approach: A Challenge Or An Extension To Twail?, Vineet Tayal
The Fourth World Approach: A Challenge Or An Extension To Twail?, Vineet Tayal
National Law School of India Review
The Fourth World Approach to International Law (‘FWAIL’) is the new formation of a critical methodology for analysing the international law framework. The idea of ‘us’ in international law, paves the way for the discrimin ation of the ‘others’ in international law. The Third World Approach to International Law (‘TWAIL’) though claiming to include all the ‘others’ of international law, fails to include the concerns of all the marginalised and excluded ‘others’. TWAIL is focused on these ‘others’ as a homogenous group and thereby neglects the marginalisation of the marginalised. FWAIL insists on the development of a new language of …
