From Utopian Enclave To Zombified Island: Disaster Capitalism And The Reassertion Of Cuban Identity In Alejandro Brugués’ Juan Of The Dead, Jungwon Park Dec 2024

From Utopian Enclave To Zombified Island: Disaster Capitalism And The Reassertion Of Cuban Identity In Alejandro Brugués’ Juan Of The Dead, Jungwon Park

Kritika Kultura

Cuba, expected with the 1959 revolution to become a utopian enclave in Latin America and beyond, has undergone political and economic hardships since the collapse of the Soviet Bloc, known as the Special Period. However, what has been the fate of this country, which remains one of the most isolated and disconnected in the world, in the twenty-first century? Cuba’s first zombie comedy film, Juan of the Dead (dir. Alejandro Brugués, 2011), depicts the nation’s dystopian present and uncertain future through social criticism, political satire, and burlesque humor. This essay argues that the film’s cannibalistic, infectious zombies allegorize the traumatic …

Caliban Discourse From Shakespeare To Java's Baron Sekeber, Paulus Sarwoto Dec 2024

Caliban Discourse From Shakespeare To Java's Baron Sekeber, Paulus Sarwoto

Kritika Kultura

Caliban discourse, marked with the arrival of a white man on a non-European island, is also found in the Javanese babad or semi-historical narrative of Serat Babad Pati (1925), a rewriting of the older text Serat Baron Sakendher (1600s). Both texts depict the arrival of European aristocrats on a foreign island. If Prospero in The Tempest (1610) is an exiled Italian duke, Baron Sekeber in Serat Babad Pati is a Dutch aristocrat traveling to Java to conquer the Mataram kingdom. Considering the possibility that both texts were produced in the same time period, at the beginning of both English and …

Communication As A Mobile Field: The Critical Dialogue And Exchange Between The Vatican Doctrine On Social Communication And Secular Communication Sciences, Joyce Arriola Dec 2024

Communication As A Mobile Field: The Critical Dialogue And Exchange Between The Vatican Doctrine On Social Communication And Secular Communication Sciences, Joyce Arriola

Kritika Kultura

The Decree on Social Communication called Inter Mirifica was one of the 16 documents that were produced by the Catholic Church at the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965). It guided the Church in engaging the modern world, particularly through the means of communication. This came at the height of the positivist inflection of communication studies, which began as an academic discipline when the first doctoral program was established in the United States in 1943. While the communication discipline grew steadily as a science, producing its own theories and adopting its specific research methodologies and protocols, it also developed along humanistic lines, …

Liminal Childhood: Survival And Working-Through The Trauma Of Syrian War In A Land Of Permanent Goodbyes, Arya Priyadarshini, Suman Sigroha

Kritika Kultura

Set amidst the tragedy of Syrian war and the gruesome reality of the refugee crisis that followed, A Land of Permanent Goodbyes (2018) by Atia Abawi is a tale of finding hope within the darkness through the liminal state of survival. This essay explores forms of coping mechanisms present in contemporary children’s and young adult trauma narratives through the lens of object- relation theory in psychoanalysis to expand the understanding of the process of working- through trauma and loss. This study, rooted in the survival strategies adopted by children and adolescents trapped in the war in the Middle East, incorporates …

Against Social Abjection: Offred’S Empowering Narration Of The Handmaid's Tale (1985), Saeedeh Esmailzadeh, Maryam Soltan Beyad Dec 2024

Against Social Abjection: Offred’S Empowering Narration Of The Handmaid's Tale (1985), Saeedeh Esmailzadeh, Maryam Soltan Beyad

Kritika Kultura

This scholarly investigation explores how Offred, the central character in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, endeavors to undermine the abjectifying apparatus of Gilead through the utilization of her narrative as a form of resistance. Drawing inspiration from Imogen Tyler’s concept of social abjection, the initial segment of this study will concentrate on the implementation of policies aimed at abjection within the society of Gilead. It will elucidate that the Gileadean regime employs tactics such as fostering disgust consensus, enforcing social hierarchies, propagating territorial stigmatization, and asserting control over language to execute the mechanisms of social abjection. This procedure serves to …

Abide With Me: A Social Ecological Perspective In Selected Pandemic Poetry, Amany Abdullah Abdelaziz Eldiasty, Eman Ebeida Mansour Dec 2024

Abide With Me: A Social Ecological Perspective In Selected Pandemic Poetry, Amany Abdullah Abdelaziz Eldiasty, Eman Ebeida Mansour

Kritika Kultura

This article traces the core principles of the social ecological approach, namely, the interconnectedness of social communities and their integration into the natural world in selected poems written by contemporary poets during the coronavirus pandemic and collected in Poetry in Response to the Pandemic, published in 2020 by St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Arlington, VA. Applying a qualitative approach that integrates interpretive and analytical readings of the selected poems based on Daniel Stokols’s views on social ecology, it argues that although social networks facilitated community engagements during the pandemic (particularly during the lockdown), virtual reality failed to sustain the social …

The Day The Dancers Stayed: Expressive Forms Of Culture In United States, Theodore S. Gonzalves Dec 2024

The Day The Dancers Stayed: Expressive Forms Of Culture In United States, Theodore S. Gonzalves

Kritika Kultura

How have performances developed by Filipino Americans over the twentieth century conveyed important lessons about culture, nation, and community? In other words, what do Filipino American cultural performances have to say about the formation of “national identity” and “community”? I select three contexts to highlight these changes: the postindustrialization of the US economy; the reaction to race, taxes and education in the Bakke vs. UC Board of Regents decision; and the political realignment of the Reagan democrats. We see the continued immigration of Filipino so-called “professional” families to the United States. Their children seek senses of themselves amidst attacks on …

Inventing Vernacular Speech-Acts: Articulating Filipino Self-Determintation In The United States, E. San Juan Jr. Dec 2024

Inventing Vernacular Speech-Acts: Articulating Filipino Self-Determintation In The United States, E. San Juan Jr.

Kritika Kultura

How vital is an immigrant’s native language for group self-affirmation? While the Filipino American community in the US (now the largest group of citizens of Asian descent) has not so far demanded bilingual education in the way the Chinese Americans or Chicanos have, the influx of new immigrants more conversant in “Filipino” (the official term for the national language of the Philippines) than in English is producing changes in ethnic self-identification more serious than before. The demand for college courses in Filipino is only a symptom of the greater awareness of exclusion and marginalization within the larger polity supposedly characterized …

Baroque Modernity And The Colonial World: Aesthetics And Catastrophe In Nick Joaquin’S A Portrait Of The Artist As Filipino, John D. Blanco Dec 2024

Baroque Modernity And The Colonial World: Aesthetics And Catastrophe In Nick Joaquin’S A Portrait Of The Artist As Filipino, John D. Blanco

Kritika Kultura

The point of departure for these reflections is the status of “Hispanism” as an aesthetic mode (and possibly an elitist position or ideology in Philippine society) in a largely ignored debate within Philippine nationalist circles after World War II. In this instance, Dr. Blanco is thinking of the polemic between nationalist historian and poet Teodoro Agoncillo and Filipino national artist Nick Joaquin following the inauguration of a Philippine national republic formally recognized by the League of Nations. In this paper, he wants to focus on one, perhaps the key, manifestation of this "Hispanism" – Joaquin’s recovery of the baroque mode …

Narrativizing Intramuros: A Counterdiscourse To Neocolonialism, Gary C. Devilles Dec 2024

Narrativizing Intramuros: A Counterdiscourse To Neocolonialism, Gary C. Devilles

Kritika Kultura

This article is a textual analysis of two short stories of Pedro S. Dandan who has articulated for Filipinos their political unconscious against the onslaught of colonial domination. In his works we read how Filipinos confront socio-political problems of war, squatting, poverty in everyday lives. Since most of his stories depict Manila in its early phase of urbanization, it is interesting to note how such stories offer a crucial perspective to the real socio-political problems we are still experiencing today. Reading his works in light of our contemporary problems will reveal the various interplay of forces of control and resistance. …

Support Early Childhood Educators Need To Strengthen Teacher Retention, Anne Zimpel Dec 2024

Support Early Childhood Educators Need To Strengthen Teacher Retention, Anne Zimpel

Graduate Teacher Education

Early childhood educators (ECEs), referring to professionals who work with young children in various settings, often face feelings of isolation and lack of a 'sense of community/belonging.' These connections are essential to providing high-quality care for young children (NAEYC 2020). Feelings of isolation and lack of connections lead educators to burnout and emotional exhaustion. This research paper focuses on how ECEs can engage as professionals to build confidence in current practices, lessen isolation, and increase retention to reduce burnout and emotional exhaustion. It is essential to support early childhood professionals so that they can offer quality care for children. A …

The Joy Of Learning, Leah Graczyk Dec 2024

The Joy Of Learning, Leah Graczyk

Graduate Teacher Education

Early childhood education has undergone significant changes in recent years (Harmon & Viruru, 2018). The increasing focus on academic success and the rising use of technology have somewhat overshadowed the joy of learning in young children (Przybylski & Weinstein, 2019). However, it's important to remember that play, often sacrificed in favor of structured academic activities, is a crucial aspect of developmentally appropriate practice in early childhood. These playful learning experiences are essential in sparking the joy of learning in young children (Friedman et al,, 2021). The research indicates that factors such as academic push-down, excessive use of technology, lack of …

Development And Content Validation Of A Social-Emotional Learning Workshop Series For Teachers Of Preschool English Language Learners And Newcomers From The Middle East, Linda M. Lilly, Otd, Mot, Otr/L

Post-Professional Occupational Therapy Doctorate Culminating Presentations

The United States is the destination for many individuals to take refuge from the Middle East (Arab American Institute Foundation, 2021; Shryock & Abraham, 2000). Many of the refugees and immigrants (newcomers) have fled war and political oppression (Mossad, 2016; U.S. Department of Homeland Security, 2016), and thus may be at higher risk of developing adverse mental health outcomes (Mawani, 2014). Core stressors related to the newcomer status for many students in a metro-Detroit public school district can contribute to the overall mental health needs and interfere with performance in the educational setting. Social-emotional learning (SEL) programs are a typical …

Experiences With Crisis And Resilience In Education In Emergencies: Voices And Lenses Of Teachers In Nicaragua, Anita De Anda Dec 2024

Experiences With Crisis And Resilience In Education In Emergencies: Voices And Lenses Of Teachers In Nicaragua, Anita De Anda

Doctorate in Education

This interpretive phenomenological study illustrated how a group of primary school teachers in Nicaragua used ontological values to orient their experiences and negotiations of a destabilizing socio-political crisis compounded by COVID-19. Set within a framework of education in emergencies, this study employed short-term ethnographic methods and trauma-informed principles to explore the dynamic and interconnected domains and relationships during collective duress, and the organic resilience that emerged to preserve core priorities. A history of collective adversity, weak systems, and political hegemony made the nation vulnerable to cycles of emergency while leaving recovery up to individuals, families, and communities. As a result, …

“All They Did Was Change The Name”: Evaluating Reforms To Solitary Confinement, Laura Mcfeely Dec 2024

“All They Did Was Change The Name”: Evaluating Reforms To Solitary Confinement, Laura Mcfeely

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

In the last decade, the United States has seen a wave of efforts to greatly reduce or eliminate the use of solitary confinement. In the light of growing international recognition that such treatment amounts to torture, these efforts are certainly encouraging and have contributed to a reduction of the number of people held in long-term isolation. But it is worthwhile to examine the extent of these reforms and what solitary confinement now looks like in states that have implemented such changes.

A robust literature exists on the harms of solitary confinement and ideas for reforming or eliminating its use. This …

Raising Awareness Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Among Critical Care And Emergency Department Nurses, Caroline Kincaid, Logan Larkey

Doctoral Projects

Problem Statement: Healthcare workers (HCWs) are experiencing increasing rates of symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), particularly after the collective trauma many nurses experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nurses are often unaware of this problem and are underdiagnosed which can negatively impact their health and the quality of healthcare.

Purpose: Implement and determine the effect of an educational intervention to increase awareness and symptom recognition of PTSD among high-risk acute care nurses.

Methods: An outcome evaluation approach using a pretest-posttest design was used with an educational intervention that provided information on PTSD including high-risk groups, symptoms, and protective factors.

Sample: …

Perceived Engagement And Achievement Of Students In A Career And Technical Education And Math Co-Taught Lesson In Southeast Tennessee: A Mixed Methods Study, Charis P. Reagan

Ed.D. Dissertations

Given the problem that students were not engaged in math class and were leaving high school without the basic math skills needed to be successful for college and career, the purpose of this convergent mixed methods case study was to investigate student and teacher perceptions of how math application through a Career and Technical Education (CTE) and math co-taught lesson influenced the level of student engagement in math and whether this co-teaching affected student achievement with math. As I reviewed the literature, I found a lack of studies related to co-teaching and if providing the students with the opportunity for …

“Know What I’M Sayin’?”: Advocating Hip-Hop As A Primary Source For Historical Scholarship, Christopher Smith Dec 2024

“Know What I’M Sayin’?”: Advocating Hip-Hop As A Primary Source For Historical Scholarship, Christopher Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rap, hip-hop’s most characteristic element, evolved from cultural practices combining in New York and spread across the United States in the latter half of the twentieth century. This thesis argues in favor of the use of rap as primary source material in future historical research. Authenticity has always surrounded hip-hop, making rap a window into artists’ perspectives. Storytelling traditions in rap’s roots allow for fiction’s use as a tool to discuss reality in lyrics. To demonstrate rap’s strengths as a primary source, the thesis examines Let’s Get Free, dead prez’s 2000 debut album. The song “They Schools” is dissected section-by-section …

Perceived Environmental Uncertainty Levels Of Ncaa Athletic Directors, Tiffany Brutus

Dissertations, 2020-current

This study explores predictors of perceived environmental uncertainty among college athletic directors (ADs) of National Intercollegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) member institutions amidst the evolving dynamics of the intercollegiate athletics industry. This research specifically focuses on uncertainty associated with environmental forces outlined in the political, economic, sociocultural, technological, environmental, and legal (PESTEL)model, which captures recent industry disruptions such as Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) legislation, social justice movements, the COVID-19 pandemic, changes in transfer rules, and conference realignments. Using a contingency theory perspective, the central inquiry of this study is how AD individual, departmental, and institutional characteristics relate to ADs' perceptions …
