PREAMBLE: Robotic magnetic navigation (RMN)-guided catheter ablation (CA) technology has been used for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias for almost 20 years. Various studies reported that RMN allows for high catheter stability, improved lesion formation and a superior safety profile. So far, no guidelines or recommendations on RMN-guided CA have been published.
PURPOSE: The aim of this consensus paper was to summarize knowledge and provide recommendations on management of arrhythmias using RMN-guided CA as treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF) and ventricular arrhythmias (VA).
METHODOLOGY: An expert writing group, performed a detailed review of available literature, and drawing on their own …

Each one of us is confronted with warnings of danger or threats to wellbeing in our everyday life, whether in the form of certain road signs, Public Service Announcements, ominous changes in bodily functioning, or cautionary tales heard from family or friends. There is great inter-individual variation in how people respond to such threats, with some people habitually tending to ignore or dismiss them, often to their peril. The first purpose of the present paper is to review several studies showing that individuals-most often men-who score very low on measures of trait anxiety are more likely to engage in behaviors …

INTRODUCTION: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a widespread chronic pain condition with prevalence increasing in older adults. Older adults living with FM experience longer pain symptom durations that can negatively impact their quality of life. Affect and neuroinflammation are potential factors that can exacerbate pain symptoms. Exercise is a recommended intervention to manage pain symptoms; however, adherence limitations persist. Drawing on the Biopsychosocial Framework of Chronic Pain, this scoping review explores how exercise impacts factors related to neuroinflammation and affect, and how these factors contribute to exercise adherence in older adults living with FM.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping search of articles …

Posttraumatic Growth (PTG), characterized by newfound meaning, perspective, and purpose for trauma survivors, remains enigmatic in its nature. This state is thought to arise from the dynamic interplay of biopsychosocial factors; however, the nature of this interplay is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the intricate relationship between PTG and facial affect dynamics, shedding light on the complex interplay of biopsychosocial factors that underpin this transformative process. We conducted a comprehensive investigation involving 19 wildfire survivors who provided daily self-reported PTG ratings alongside smartphone videos analyzed using Automated Facial Affect Recognition (AFAR) software. Our findings revealed compelling evidence of self-organization …

Justice Via Chat? How Litigants’ Preferences And Attorneys’ Recommendations Influence The Choice To Use Online Dispute Resolution, Andrea C. F. Wolfs, Donna Shestowsky
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
There is a significant need for empirical evidence concerning how litigants compare and choose between various modalities of online dispute resolution (ODR) and traditional in-person mediation for resolving legal disputes. To fill this need, we examined three potentially relevant psychological factors: (a) baseline attitudes toward in-person, video, and text-based mediation; (b) past communication style used by litigants; and (c) expert advice via attorney recommendations. We utilized a 2 × 3 × 3 design with communication style as a between-subjects variable, mediation modality as a within-subjects variable, and attorney recommendation randomized as either aligning with or differing from the participant’s baseline …

Objective: Positive affect may influence health by promoting physical activity, but evidence evaluating this association is mostly cross-sectional and cannot discern directionality. This study used a counterfactual-based framework to estimate the causal effect of positive affect on physical activity patterns over 25 years, accounting for potential reverse associations. Method: Data were from 3,352 participants in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study. Repeated assessments of positive affect and physical activity were collected from 1990 to 2016. Longitudinal associations were evaluated in two ways: (a) using baseline positive affect in traditional linear mixed models that accounted for reverse causal …

Sexual Harassment And Employee Identification In Radio Broadcasting, Jillene Krause
Communication
Sexual harassment is often vaguely defined in policy and the purpose of this study was to learn if employees perceive sexual harassment in vague or specific terms. Exploring radio broadcasting employees was a new area of exploration for the multiple ways employees may identify with their employer: professional, organizational, and group identification (Lammers, Atouba, & Carlson, 2013). For this study I primarily drew on interviews with 17 radio broadcasting employees about sexual harassment definitions and employee identification (profession, organization, and group). A survey instrument was used to collect demographic data and to collect baseline data for identification. Results show that …

Cultural District: Nexus Of Cultures: How Can Architecture Be Utilized To Reshape Narratives Of Nationalism And Foster A Sense Of Global Unity Within A Responsive Sustainable Cultural District In Aden, Yemen?, Amin Abdi
Architecture Theses
The world today is increasingly divided along nationalistic lines, with people often forgetting their shared humanity in favor of their national identities. It is disheartening to observe the rise of divisive nationalism, fostering an "us versus them" mentality. This categorization of individual based on nationality often leads to conflicts and undermines the shared humanity that should bind us together. The need to rekindle a sense of global unity becomes apparent, and architecture can serve as a powerful tool in reshaping these narratives, which can also serve as a potent tool for expressing and reinforcing nationalistic sentiments. This research aims to …

Inclusive Office Design: Addressing The Neurodiversity Spectrum In The Workplace, Kay Borgerding
Architecture Theses
When most people think of inclusive design, they think of those with physical disabilities. As architects, we strive to create inclusive spaces that can be experienced the same no matter if someone is differently abled, but what about those that have neurological disabilities that are not seen as obviously or as often? This project expands the typical understanding of what an inclusive workplace should look like by implementing the idea that the key to success is to focus the human experience. Hospitality-oriented offices provide an opportunity to personalize the journey you take throughout the workday. Expanding the range of available …

New Breath For Johannesburg: Adaptive Reuse Of Ponte Tower And The Imagining Of Witpoortjie Tower As Catalysts That Foster Urban And Social Growth, Joseph Seelhammer
Architecture Theses
Adaptive reuse is the architecture of the future. In every single metropolis, city, town or village there are buildings that are decrepit, dysfunctional, or disused. In the future, adaptive reuse will encompass a huge percentage of architecture projects. In many areas giving new life to one of these buildings can act as a starting point for the surrounding area to come back to life, as they are usually not the only part of a neighborhood that needs help. This thesis explored how using architecture and adaptive reuse as a catalyst for urban revitalization can bring new life to a downtown …

Adaptive Reuse: Repurposing A Vacant College Campus For New Occupancy, Jami Ewart
Adaptive Reuse: Repurposing A Vacant College Campus For New Occupancy, Jami Ewart
Architecture Theses
Adaptive reuse has been a design strategy in buildings existing for centuries. The adaptation of a building, also known as recycling or conversion, is the process of reusing an existing building other than what it was originally built or designed for. This element of design has enabled generations to derive a sense of continuity and stability from their physical surroundings. This paper examines the context of adaptive reuse through extensive research: its history and evolution, the importance of cultural memory and historical preservation, the question of value in design, sustainability, and the overarching idea of designing through time. The information …

How Can Declining Rural Communities In North Dakota Be Saved? A Critical Investigation, Sydney Seamands
How Can Declining Rural Communities In North Dakota Be Saved? A Critical Investigation, Sydney Seamands
Architecture Theses
Rural North Dakota has become somewhat of an abandoned land. There are dozens of small communities, with major service gaps and unsustainable populations. With the death of each rural town, the state loses pieces of its history, as unique cultures and buildings decay alongside the highways. The population decline in rural communities across the country can be attributed to a variety of factors, with perhaps the most imposing issue being a lack of opportunity. Small towns struggle to maintain vitality with limited educational, professional, and recreational opportunities. While small-town life offers many benefits, many residents leave for urban amenities. The …

When encountering conditions with unknown aspects, it is an impulse to occupy them with experiences and memories to alleviate the associated feelings and reach a form of understanding. This thesis explores how our understandings are influenced and establish a precedent for architectural interventions to assist in resolving the conditions of the unknown. Following World War II (WWII), the 38th parallel marked the beginning of the separation of the Koreas before it developed into the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Contrasting the stagnant characteristics of this physical division, the emotional division in Korea has continuously evolved and shifted throughout the years. Designed in …
A Translation Of Art: How Architecture Infused With Music Educates Humankind, Kamryn Nicole Brecht
A Translation Of Art: How Architecture Infused With Music Educates Humankind, Kamryn Nicole Brecht
Architecture Theses
During the 18th century, humans started to perceive the world around them differently. Structures were designed with the assumption that the meaning of the building would follow afterwards, instead of building with initial purpose. The world we reside in is now full of buildings that are cheaply constructed, unaesthetic, and not serving the needs of a site or its corresponding community. To return to architecture with meaning, architecture must once again be used as a narration for human life. This thesis is a study on how the art of music can be translated into the field of architecture in a …
Meeting Inevitabilities: How Architecture Can Aid In Our Acceptance Of Death And Improvement Of Life, Caitlyn E. Kolling
Meeting Inevitabilities: How Architecture Can Aid In Our Acceptance Of Death And Improvement Of Life, Caitlyn E. Kolling
Architecture Theses
Meeting Inevitabilities seeks to explore design in relation to life, death, and memory. In the modern age, there is a significant lack of space for human interaction and connection surrounding the events of death, which further contributes to the divergence of death from life, life from memory, and memory from death. The designs aim to bring forth the divergence in one space, and explode the ideas and design outwards, where these three elements can be perceived together in a new way, in a reversible convergence.
24/7 Stadiums: Their Impact On Local Communities, Chase James Becker
24/7 Stadiums: Their Impact On Local Communities, Chase James Becker
Architecture Theses
This disquisition focuses on the ways in which a plausible stadium can be operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. With there being no such thing as a “24/7 stadium”, research was conducted through case studies, data collection, and schematic designs to see if this new type of stadium can have a positive impact on the local community surrounding it. The reason for this type of stadium is that stadiums typically have limited functionality that hinders the community in developing other developments that may benefit them more directly than a stadium would. With that in mind, a stadium …

The Future Of Education: Combining Libraries And Museums, Mark Alan Iii Geiss
The Future Of Education: Combining Libraries And Museums, Mark Alan Iii Geiss
Architecture Theses
Archives and their specializations have existed within our societies for hundreds of years, adapting alongside their communities until the advent of the digital age where their physical presence was thrown into question. Can archives such as libraries and museums be integrated through a system that overlaps these specializations in way beyond sharing a structure? In modern times, these spaces compete with businesses in providing a neutral location to further oneself outside of the context of work or home. Exacerbated through problems in American developments lacking third places, especially free to access ones, what facilities that are accessible may be able …

The goal with this thesis is not for it to be a guide but rather as a point of inspiration for educational facilities and designers. With the advancing development of digital technology, educational facilities are tasked with adapting to a society that has digital technology deeply ingrained in it. Educators and designers have a great opportunity to reevaluate our learning spaces and …
Illuminating Connections: A Theatrical Intervention In Urban Loneliness, Carter J. Huber
Illuminating Connections: A Theatrical Intervention In Urban Loneliness, Carter J. Huber
Architecture Theses
Amidst the hustle of urban life, an epidemic of loneliness grips our modern cities, casting shadows upon the once vibrant display of community. Before the 19th century, public spaces thrived as stages where every encounter was a theatrical exchange, a space to recognize oneself through the presence of others. However, the cityscape shifted with time, veiling the human connection behind privatization and specialization. This project intertwines theater and urban intervention to capture the fleeting moments of human connection. Each scene serves as a bridge between solitude and community, inviting audiences to rediscover the beauty of shared experiences. Through storytelling, we …
