Putting Students In Their Place. The Role Of Placement Testing In Language Programs, Troy L. Cox, Matthew P. Wilcox Jan 2024

Putting Students In Their Place. The Role Of Placement Testing In Language Programs, Troy L. Cox, Matthew P. Wilcox

Faculty Publications

A perennial issue that nearly all language programs face with the arrival of new students is: where is the best place for each student to begin their course of study within our curricular structure given their current language abilities? When students have no previous language learning experience, the decision seems easy: place them in the beginning- level class. But when students have prior experience, deciding where they belong becomes more complicated given the wide range in the quality and quantity of previous exposure and the level of ability attained. Programmatic exigencies and resources may constrain student placement even further.

Higher Education As The Pathway To Personal And Community Success For Pakistani And Bangladeshi People: A Systematic Review, Shames Maskeen, Jacob Matthews, Debbie M. Smith, Helen J. Stain, Lisa A. D. Webster Jan 2024

Higher Education As The Pathway To Personal And Community Success For Pakistani And Bangladeshi People: A Systematic Review, Shames Maskeen, Jacob Matthews, Debbie M. Smith, Helen J. Stain, Lisa A. D. Webster

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The United Kingdom’s (UK) goal of a 20% increase in participation of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups in higher education (HE) by 2020 has not been met. Pakistani and Bangladeshi students are some of the most underrepresented BAME groups in UK HE institutions. This systematic review included 20 papers that identified barriers and facilitators towards participation in HE separately for Pakistani and Bangladeshi students in the UK. Using thematic analysis, two overarching themes were constructed: (i) the interplay of culturally expected roles on HE participation and (ii) belief that HE is vital for success. This review identified the …

Realizing The Role Of Interdisciplinary Practices In Psycho-Educational Assessment For Learners With Special Education Needs/Disabilities In Guyana, Keon Cheong Jan 2024

Realizing The Role Of Interdisciplinary Practices In Psycho-Educational Assessment For Learners With Special Education Needs/Disabilities In Guyana, Keon Cheong

Theses and Dissertations

A growing number of students are referred to special education sectors. With the growing numbers, there is a need for structures and systems to be in place to ensure that the least restrictive environment is used while ensuring that learners are adequately placed based on their abilities. This challenge is heightened in the Global South. In the Caribbean, few countries have legislation to address disabilities, and in locations where there is legislation, it is either outdated or not enforced. This dissertation conducts a systematic review using 60 studies to compile comprehensive research-based information about interdisciplinary practices, specifically in the psycho-educational …

The Impact Of The Belt And Road Initiative On Green Innovation And Innovation Modes: Empirical Evidence From Chinese Listed Enterprises, Bowen Li, Zijing Zhang, Zhaoyong Zhang Jan 2024

The Impact Of The Belt And Road Initiative On Green Innovation And Innovation Modes: Empirical Evidence From Chinese Listed Enterprises, Bowen Li, Zijing Zhang, Zhaoyong Zhang

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), promoting green innovation in enterprises has been the central focus of the developmental strategy for China and countries along the Belt and Road to ensure sustainable development in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to the environment and development. This paper examines the driving factors and heterogeneous mechanisms of the BRI in green technology innovation, especially in collaborative vs. independent innovation modes, utilizing a multi-period difference-in-difference model (DID) and micro-level panel data of Chinese listed enterprises spanning from 2007 to 2021. We find that the BRI has significantly stimulated the …

Design, Synthesis, Molecular Docking, And Molecular Dynamic Studies Of Novel Quinazoline Derivatives As Phosphodiesterase 7 Inhibitors, Marwa M. Safar Prof. Dr. Jan 2024

Design, Synthesis, Molecular Docking, And Molecular Dynamic Studies Of Novel Quinazoline Derivatives As Phosphodiesterase 7 Inhibitors, Marwa M. Safar Prof. Dr.

Pharmacy

Introduction: Phosphodiesterase 7 (PDE7) is a high-affinity cyclic AMP (cAMP)- specific PDE that is expressed in immune and proinflammatory cells. In this work, we explore the possibility that selective small molecule inhibitors of this enzyme family could provide a novel approach to alleviate the inflammation that is associated with many inflammatory diseases. Methods: A series of novel substituted 4-hydrazinoquinazoline derivatives and fused triazoloquinazolines were designed, synthesized, and evaluated in vitro for their PDE7A inhibition activities, in comparison with Theophylline, a non-selective PDE inhibitor, and BRL50481, a selective PDE7A inhibitor. This series of novel quinazoline derivatives were synthesized via multi-step reactions. …

In Silico Identifcation Of New Potential Inhibitors Of Quorum Sensing By Gram‑Positive Bacteria Through Specialized Molecular Docking, Amgad Albohy, Najla A. Obaid, Mariam Mojally, Mohammed Abou Rehab, Najd Ahmad Alkhudhir Jan 2024

In Silico Identifcation Of New Potential Inhibitors Of Quorum Sensing By Gram‑Positive Bacteria Through Specialized Molecular Docking, Amgad Albohy, Najla A. Obaid, Mariam Mojally, Mohammed Abou Rehab, Najd Ahmad Alkhudhir

Pharmacy

Quorum sensing is the process by which bacterial cells can communicate by producing substances to regulate viable processes such as gene expression, virulence, and bioflm formation. Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis have specifc enzymes (autoinducers) that control the quorum sensing system. Sortase A is a surface protein that regulates virulence and cell‒cell communication in Gram-positive bacteria. To interfere with this system and reduce virulence and cell‒cell communication, quorum sensing inhibitors are used, which are nonantibiotic substances. In this study, we aimed to use Food and Drug Administration-approved drugs (analgesics and antipsychotics) and investigate their activity using …

Development And Validation Of Green Stability-Indicating Rp-Hplc Method For Estimation Of Ertapenem: Degradation Kinetics And Structural Mass Elucidation Using Ms, Sohair M. Aboelghar, Hebatallah A. Wagdy, Maha A. Hegazy Jan 2024

Hegazy

Pharmacy

Ertapenem is an antibiotic that is used in the treatment of several bacterial infections, and it was recently approved for the treatment of the COVID-19 virus. A simple validated stability-indicating reversed phase High Performance Liquid Chromatographic (RP-HPLC) method was developed for ertapenem estimation. The separation was done using Pronto SIL® C18 (300 × 4.6 mm, 5 μm) as the stationary phase, methanol, and acidified water as the mobile phase in gradient mode with a flow rate of 1 mL/min and a pH 4.0 adjusted by orthophosphoric acid. The method was validated according to ICH guidelines. The linearity ranges from 5.00-120.00 …
