Lessons From A Professional Learning Community: Navigating Tensions While Moving Between Theory And Practice In Teaching Chemistry For Social Justice, Kathryn Ribay
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Maintaining a commitment to social justice teaching can be especially challenging when navigating the bureaucratic systems and ever-spiraling responsibilities of the education system. To better understand how social-justice-oriented educators navigate these tensions, this paper uses qualitative methods to investigate the social justice problems of practice identified by five chemistry teachers in a year-long professional learning community. By analyzing the challenges described in their problem-posing segments, I identify seven major themes that represent key sources of tension and possibility as teachers move from theory to practice in teaching chemistry for social justice. These findings indicate that the practical considerations of day-to-day …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Introduction: Evaluations of alcohol environmental prevention efforts examine short-term effects of these interventions on alcohol-related problems. We examine whether the effects of the Sacramento Neighborhood Alcohol Prevention Project (SNAPP), an alcohol environmental intervention aimed to reduce alcohol-related problems in two neighbourhoods, on child abuse and neglect remained 7 years post-implementation. Methods: SNAPP used a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design, where intervention activities occurred in the South area, followed by those in the North area 2 years later. Our sample size is 3912 space–time units (326 census block groups × 12 years [1999–2010]). Outcomes were measured at the household level and …

Classification And Online Clustering Of Zero-Day Malware, Olha Jurečková, Martin Jureček, Mark Stamp, Fabio Di Troia, Róbert Lórencz
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
A large amount of new malware is constantly being generated, which must not only be distinguished from benign samples, but also classified into malware families. For this purpose, investigating how existing malware families are developed and examining emerging families need to be explored. This paper focuses on the online processing of incoming malicious samples to assign them to existing families or, in the case of samples from new families, to cluster them. We experimented with seven prevalent malware families from the EMBER dataset, four in the training set and three additional new families in the test set. The features were …

Financing entrepreneurship spurs innovation and economic growth. Digital financial platforms that crowdfund equity for entrepreneurs have emerged globally, yet they remain poorly understood. We model equity crowdfunding in terms of the relationship between the number of investors and the amount of money raised per pitch. We examine heterogeneity in the average amount raised per pitch that is associated with differences across three countries and seven platforms. Using a novel dataset of successful fundraising on the most prominent platforms in the UK, Germany, and the USA, we find the underlying relationship between the number of investors and the amount of money …

Purpose: When emergencies or disasters arise, individuals who use augmenta-tive and alternative communication (AAC) are particularly vulnerable. It is critical that individuals who use AAC are supported to make decisions that impact their own lives and are able to communicate during such a crisis. Preparedness efforts that include a plan around communication needs and supports are necessary for ensuring that individuals who use AAC are able to understand options that ensure personal safety and express their needs during a time of crisis. Method: Qualitative methods were used to identify and describe the experi-ences of two young adults who use AAC …

Background: Eating a high-quality diet or adhering to a given dietary strategy may influence weight loss. However, these 2 factors have not been examined concurrently for those following macronutrient-limiting diets. Objective: To determine whether improvement in dietary quality, change in dietary macronutrient composition, or the combination of these factors is associated with differential weight loss when following a healthy low-carbohydrate (HLC) or healthy low-fat (HLF) diet. Design: Generally healthy adults were randomly assigned to HLC or HLF diets for 12 mo (n = 609) as part of a randomized controlled weight loss study. Participants with complete 24-h dietary recall data …
The Coulomb Gauge In Non-Associative Gauge Theory, Sergey Grigorian
The Coulomb Gauge In Non-Associative Gauge Theory, Sergey Grigorian
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
The aim of this paper is to extend existence results for the Coulomb gauge from standard gauge theory to a non-associative setting. Non-associative gauge theory is based on smooth loops, which are the non-associative analogs of Lie groups. The main components of the theory include a finite-dimensional smooth loop L , its tangent algebra l , a finite-dimensional Lie group Ψ , that is the pseudoautomorphism group of L , a smooth manifold M with a principal Ψ -bundle P , and associated bundles Q and A with fibers L and l , respectively. A configuration in this theory is …
Emf Revisited, Art Davis
Emf Revisited, Art Davis
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This paper was inspired by a recent publication by Redžíc (2018 Eur. J. Phys. 39 025205) which threw into bold relief the differences between the way Maxwell viewed the current and the way Lorentz visualized it. We make the assumption that for a circuit of laboratory dimensions current (and charge perturbation effects in general) can be assumed to propagate instantaneously around the loop. Our second fundamental assumption is the commonly accepted one that E is the force per unit charge on a stationary charge. We use these facts to make the usual definition of electromotive force more rigorous and to …
Conditional Constrained And Unconstrained Quantization For Probability Distributions, Megha Pandey, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury
Conditional Constrained And Unconstrained Quantization For Probability Distributions, Megha Pandey, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
In this paper, we present the idea of conditional quantization for a Borel probability measure P on a normed space Rk. We introduce the concept of conditional quantization in both constrained and unconstrained scenarios, along with defining the conditional quantization errors, dimensions, and coefficients in each case. We then calculate these values for specific probability distributions. Additionally, we demonstrate that for a Borel probability measure, the lower and upper quantization dimensions and coefficients do not depend on the conditional set of the conditional quantization in both constrained and unconstrained quantization.
Modeling The Effect Of Observational Social Learning On Parental Decision-Making For Childhood Vaccination And Diseases Spread Over Household Networks, Tamer Oraby, Andras Balogh
Modeling The Effect Of Observational Social Learning On Parental Decision-Making For Childhood Vaccination And Diseases Spread Over Household Networks, Tamer Oraby, Andras Balogh
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
In this paper, we introduce a novel model for parental decision-making about vaccinations against a childhood disease that spreads through a contact network. This model considers a bilayer network comprising two overlapping networks, which are either Erdős–Rényi (random) networks or Barabási–Albert networks. The model also employs a Bayesian aggregation rule for observational social learning on a social network. This new model encompasses other decision models, such as voting and DeGroot models, as special cases. Using our model, we demonstrate how certain levels of social learning about vaccination preferences can converge opinions, influencing vaccine uptake and ultimately disease spread. In addition, …
Flow And Stability Of Three-Dimensional Rotating Viscoelastic Jet, Daniel N. Riahi
Flow And Stability Of Three-Dimensional Rotating Viscoelastic Jet, Daniel N. Riahi
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
We consider rotationally driven nonlinear viscoelastic jet. In contrast to previous unrealistic planar studies with no gravity effect, we investigate here realistic three-dimensional jet with gravity effect. Using theoretical and computational methods, we develop models for such jet and its stability and determine the solutions. We find three-dimensional jet with gravity effect leads to faster and thinner jet. For jet arc length higher than its exit diameter, our calculation with typical parameter values shows that jet radius is smaller by a factor of more than 1.4 and jet speed is higher by factor of more than 2 as are compared …

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
In November 2022, ChatGPT, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) large language model (LLM) capable of generating human-like responses, was launched. ChatGPT has a variety of promising applications in education, such as using it as thought-partner in generating curricular resources. However, scholars also recognize that the use of ChatGPT raises concerns, such as outputs that are inaccurate, nonsensical, or vague. We, two mathematics teacher educators, engaged in a collaborative self-study using qualitative descriptive approaches to investigate the procedures, concepts, and cognitive demand of ChatGPT-generated mathematical tasks focused on fraction multiplication using the area model approach. We found that the ChatGPT-generated tasks were …

Background: As the number of thrombectomy passes increases during endovascular therapy (EVT) for acute stroke, neurointerventionalists must weigh the risks of potential complications against the risk of failing to recanalize the affected vessel. Thus, we investigated the effectiveness and safety of EVT for patients with acute stroke in which ≥5 EVT passes were performed.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study from January 2013 to December 2022 included 31 thrombectomy-capable centers. Patients in whom ≥5 EVT passes were made were included in the analysis. The patients with successful recanalization defined as modified Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction ≥2b at 5, 6, 7, or …

For a locally finite set, 𝐴⊆ℝ𝑑 , the 𝑘 th Brillouin zone of 𝑎∈𝐴 is the region of points 𝑥∈ℝ𝑑 for which ‖𝑥−𝑎‖ is the 𝑘 th smallest among the Euclidean distances between 𝑥 and the points in 𝐴 . If 𝐴 is a lattice, the 𝑘 th Brillouin zones of the points in 𝐴 are translates of each other, and together they tile space. Depending on the value of 𝑘 , they express medium- or long-range order in the set. We study fundamental geometric and combinatorial properties of Brillouin zones, focusing on the integer lattice and its perturbations. Our …

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a common forerunner of neurodegeneration and accompanying dementia, including Alzheimer's Disease (AD), yet the mechanisms underlying this comorbidity remain unresolved. Individuals of Mexican descent living in South Texas have increased prevalence of comorbid T2D and early onset AD, despite low incidence of the APOE-ε4 risk variant among the population and an absence of a similar predisposition among relatives residing in Mexico - suggesting a role for environmental factors in coincident T2D and AD susceptibility. We therefore sought to test if differences in gut community structure could be observed in this population prior to any AD …

The complex dynamics of freshwater harmful algal blooms (HABs) necessitate proactive monitoring approaches to mitigate their impacts. The rapid breakthrough in computing prowess and statistical advances is triggering the development of data-driven techniques such as machine learning (ML) models, which have been shown in different fields to be instrumental in finding patterns for explaining relationships in observed data. This study assesses the ability of ML models for HABs monitoring in a lake using chlorophyll-a concentration as the index. The selected models for this study were regression tree, random forest (RF), multilayer perceptron (MLP), support vector regression (SVR), long short-term memory …

The twin tetrahedron of a given tetrahedron is obtained by circumscribing it by a parallelepiped. However, in general, it is not easy to construct a box that circumscribes a tetrahedron. Actually, constructing a box is equivalent of finding two tangled tetrahedra. We first establish a theorem to construct tangled tetrahedra circumscribed in a box with concurrent diagonals. This generalizes the idea of twin tetrahedra circumscribed in a parallelepiped. And we show that two tetrahedra are twins if and only if they are tangled with concurrent diagonals at the centroid of one of the tetrahedra. We establish a theorem in order …

Sexual Harassment And Employee Identification In Radio Broadcasting, Jillene Krause
Communication
Sexual harassment is often vaguely defined in policy and the purpose of this study was to learn if employees perceive sexual harassment in vague or specific terms. Exploring radio broadcasting employees was a new area of exploration for the multiple ways employees may identify with their employer: professional, organizational, and group identification (Lammers, Atouba, & Carlson, 2013). For this study I primarily drew on interviews with 17 radio broadcasting employees about sexual harassment definitions and employee identification (profession, organization, and group). A survey instrument was used to collect demographic data and to collect baseline data for identification. Results show that …
