Evaluating The Impact Of Lidar Dem Uncertainties On Inundation Modeling In Coastal Sub-Watersheds: An Exploration Via Deterministic And Probabilistic Approaches, Madan Chhetri Thapa Jan 2024

Evaluating The Impact Of Lidar Dem Uncertainties On Inundation Modeling In Coastal Sub-Watersheds: An Exploration Via Deterministic And Probabilistic Approaches, Madan Chhetri Thapa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This study examines the impact of uncertainty associated with Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) derived Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) on flood risk mapping in the North Biscayne Bay sub-watershed. A comparison of flood extent and generation of the probability of flooding was carried out using the bathtub and probabilistic approaches respectively. The water level was computed separately for original and refined DEM using Cascade 2001 hydrological model. Using land cover based corrected DEMs reveals a 12% reduction in flooded areas in contrast to original DEM, considering uncertainties associated with land cover. Probabilistic flood modeling via Gaussian Geostatistical Simulation accounts for …

Exploring Teachers’ Perceptions Of The Impact Of Digital Game-Based Learning On Student Engagement, Motivation, And Learning Outcomes In K-12 Social Studies, Danielle R. Brown Jan 2024

Exploring Teachers’ Perceptions Of The Impact Of Digital Game-Based Learning On Student Engagement, Motivation, And Learning Outcomes In K-12 Social Studies, Danielle R. Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This systematic literature review investigates K-12 social studies educators' perspectives on digital game-based learning (DGBL) from 2015 to 2024, focusing on its impact on student engagement, motivation, and learning outcomes. Using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) reflexive thematic analysis, data from 10 studies were synthesized. Four main themes emerged regarding engagement and motivation, and three concerning learning outcomes. Findings indicate that while teachers recognize DGBL's potential benefits, they prioritize meeting learning objectives over new instructional strategies due to teaching demands and limited suitable digital games. Barriers such as time constraints and resource limitations hinder broader DGBL implementation. Overcoming these challenges requires …

Exploring The Relationships Between School Counselors’ Developmental Stages, Leadership Skills, Wellness, Burnout, And Turnover Intention, Siobhan Murphy Jan 2024

Exploring The Relationships Between School Counselors’ Developmental Stages, Leadership Skills, Wellness, Burnout, And Turnover Intention, Siobhan Murphy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

In recent years, school counselors and education have faced an increase in mental health challenges, which has had adverse effects on school counseling (Marraccini et al., 2023). Seventy-six percent of state counseling coordinators report insufficient school counselors available to fill positions (American School Counselor Association [ASCA], 2023b). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2023) estimates that 26,600 jobs per year will become available for school counselors, career counselors, and advisors over the next 10 years due to attrition and retirement from the profession. This nonexperimental, correlational design explored the relationships between the volunteer school counselors’ (N= 56) developmental stage and …

Forging The Alliance For Progress: Venezuela, The United States, And The Bounty Of Oil, 1957-1963, Leandro Simón Pirela Aristeguieta Jan 2024

Forging The Alliance For Progress: Venezuela, The United States, And The Bounty Of Oil, 1957-1963, Leandro Simón Pirela Aristeguieta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This thesis analyses the foreign economic policies of the Eisenhower and Kennedy administration toward Venezuela from 1957 to 1963. By examining material from U.S. diplomatic document collections, my research intervenes in the historiography of the Alliance for Progress by demonstrating the failures of U.S. policy in Venezuela during the Latin American Cold War. Although the United States supported the democratic government of Rómulo Betancourt politically, it hamstrung his government economically. The Kennedy administration at first provided loans for economic development to Venezuela, though they quickly eliminated this aid and began prioritizing military assistance as the most efficient way of supporting …

Foundation Of Sand: The Eisenhower Doctrine And The 1958 Lebanese Crisis, Douglas Provenzano Jan 2024

Foundation Of Sand: The Eisenhower Doctrine And The 1958 Lebanese Crisis, Douglas Provenzano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Occurring in the context of the Cold War, the 1958 Lebanese Crisis forced U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower and top policymakers to balance a multitude of factors when considering an appropriate response to the crisis. While Eisenhower claimed publicly that Operation Blue Bat was an intervention aimed at containing the every looming threat of communism, meeting records of top U.S. policy makers contradict such explanations and offer insight to the President’s true motivations. Eisenhower instead sought to maintain U.S. influence among a coalition of Middle Eastern conservative governments operating in a U.S. led regional military alliance. The crisis forced the …

Fragmented Realities: Exploring Vulnerability And Identity In The Digital Age, Nargiza Dadabaeva Jan 2024

Fragmented Realities: Exploring Vulnerability And Identity In The Digital Age, Nargiza Dadabaeva

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This thesis exhibition explores how digital culture affects identity and connection through a series of paintings made through collage, mixed media, and reflective surfaces. It looks at how identity is fragmented in the digital age when we construct personas online that are selected and, therefore, less authentic. The paintings juxtapose the use of analog methods with digital imagery, in order to ask about the tension between vulnerability and performance and the authenticity of online interactions. The series is about emotional exhaustion, curated personas, and the search for genuine connection. Reflective elements and textures mounted and layered encourage viewers to engage …

Valorization Of Spent Vetiver Roots For Biochar Generation, Sameer Neve, Dibyendu Sarkar, Manas Warke, Teresa Bandosz, Rupali Datta

Michigan Tech Publications

Vetiver root is widely used to produce essential oils in the aromatherapy industry. After the extraction of oil, the roots are disposed of as waste. The central objective of this research was to explore the conversion of this waste into a resource using a circular economy framework. To generate biochar, vetiver roots were pyrolyzed at different temperatures (300, 500, and 700 °C) and residence times (30, 60, and 120 min). Analysis showed the root biochar generated at 500 °C and held for 60 min had the highest surface area of 308.15 m2/g and a yield of 53.76%, in addition to …

Cancer is one of the deadliest diseases worldwide and has been responsible for millions of deaths. However, developing a satisfactory smart multifunctional material combining different strategies to kill cancer cells poses a challenge. This work aims at filling this gap by developing a composite material for cancer treatment through hyperthermia and drug release. With this purpose, magnetic nanoparticles were coated with a polymer matrix consisting of poly (L-co-D,L lactic acid-co-trimethylene carbonate) and a poly(ethylene oxide)–poly(propylene oxide)–poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction confirmed magnetite to be the only iron oxide in the sample. Cytotoxicity …

Investor-State Climate Litigation: Could International Investment Law Help To Protect The Climate?, Dr. Andreas Buser Jan 2024

Investor-State Climate Litigation: Could International Investment Law Help To Protect The Climate?, Dr. Andreas Buser

Indian Journal of International Economic Law

Climate Protection and International Investment Law have an ambiguous relationship. Whereas some scholars highlight that investment Law could help in protecting green investments many commentators depict investment protection as an obstacle to States’ climate mitigation policies. This article seeks to go beyond that limited dichotomy in assessing whether investment law could be a tool for investors to argue for more, rather than less climate protection. In particular, full protection and security clauses may well be interpreted to contain due diligence obligations to protect climate sensitive investments against effects of climate change. Moreover, if States postpone climate protection to a time, …

Regulatory Autonomy And Article Xxiv Of Gatt, Dr. Delroy S. Beckford Jan 2024

Regulatory Autonomy And Article Xxiv Of Gatt, Dr. Delroy S. Beckford

Indian Journal of International Economic Law

This article focusses on regulatory autonomy in the context of Article XXIV of GATT navigating issues which touch and concern the internal and external liberalisation requirements and their implication for core non-discrimination principles, the Enabling Clause, mutual recognition agreements, and specific disciplines such as trade remedies, SPS measures, TBT measures, and Article XX exceptions. The article proceeds on the premise that these areas of trade coverage offer significant scope for the realisation of regulatory autonomy for countries to fashion their domestic trade policy agenda consistent with their developmental requirements, but questions whether the current state of the jurisprudence is amenable …

Women And Trade In Africa: A Case For Mainstreaming Gender In The Implementation Of The African Continental Free Trade Agreement (Afcfta), Tsotang Tsietsi

Indian Journal of International Economic Law

This article seeks to determine the extent to which the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) and its protocols accord attention to the barriers and opportunities that African women face in intra-African trade. It discusses the considerable role of African women traders, for example, in agriculture, micro, small and medium enterprises, and in informal cross border trade. It questions whether, in support of their contributions in these sectors, gender has been adequately mainstreamed in the AfCFTA legal framework. Through its analysis of the contents of the instruments, it argues that there was little prioritization of women in the agreement and …
